Board of Directors PRESIDENT S MESSAGE John Sliskovic John T Sliskovic ca ey com Lynne s message at this time one year ago spoke of absorbing the affect of the pandemic adapting to how we offer our services and adjusting to new rules and regulations One of her concluding comments was that our members and staff had adjusted well to the challenges of 2020 but we hope for a less challenging 2021 As it has turned out 2021 has been only slightly less challenging than 2020 and similar themes of absorbing adjusting and adapting remain relevant At the time of writing we are operating at the highest capacity since the start of the pandemic Thanks to proof of vaccination capacity limits have been lifted for indoor dining and our fitness facility and indoor meeting and event spaces We are very fortunate to have enjoyed close to a full golf and tennis season with only the postponement between mid April to mid May interrupting play Fitness has carried on in hybrid form for the most part and for now we plan to continue to manage the number of people using the fitness facility to err on the side of caution The trap and skeet section will have started by the time you read this issue of Club Life Our new pickleball courts are ready and have already seen considerable use Landscaping will continue in this area and we plan to officially cut the ribbon in May After a one year hiatus the food and beverage team are excited to be able to display their talents at the men s and women s holiday parties Due to the restrictions still in place prohibiting the traditional cocktail hour often cocktail two hour at these events we decided the parties will be members only Another example of adjusting and adapting The impact of the pandemic continues to be greatest on our food and beverage operation Kudos to Executive 3 Chef Michael Stark Director of Clubhouse Operations Michael Hearse and the entire team for the tremendous efforts during a very trying time Many members have continued to provide compliments on the quality of the food and service It has also been noticed that Michael Hearse Chris Carnegie and Jon Nusink have been serving tables from time to time as we and others in the food and beverage industry deal with significant staff shortages In interviews with staff in both a recruiting and exiting context one important piece of feedback we received is that favourable interaction with members is critical to a positive experience for our staff and ultimately retention At times we are all guilty of taking our fortunate positions in life for granted so please remember to say thanks to our staff and be kind in your interactions with them And remember to congratulate Pete Willems on 30 years of service As mentioned golf has been able to carry on pretty much as normal since play resumed in May By all accounts access to the tee was much better in 2021 even though golf rounds for the season were only down 12 from 2020 This is still up 25 from the average 5 years pre pandemic Congrats to Chris Lawson in his first year as our Director of Golf and the entire Pro Shop and Back Shop teams for the excellent service in handling the extra demand The golf course conditions have been first class throughout the season Jayson Deb and the team have managed to accomplish this despite the number of rounds played over the past two years You will have read in the eNews that Mark McCallum our Equipment Manager Mechanic WINTER 2021 2022
is retiring We congratulate Mark on 36 years of service and thank him for agreeing to carry on with a role in the golf course infrastructure project as he will help to oversee the irrigation component due to his extensive historical knowledge of the golf course both above and below the ground Tennis has also carried on much like normal times except that the number of tennis games in 2021 were 3 greater than in 2020 and well in excess of pre pandemic times The average 5 years pre pandemic saw just over 22 000 games of tennis and we had significant increases the last two years with just over 27 000 games in 2021 It has been fabulous to see the tennis program thriving Thanks to Adam and the team for a great 2021 and I know they are looking forward to introducing the membership to pickleball Financially your Club remains in excellent shape Our food and beverage operation continues to be adversely affected as corporate events have been absent and while some weddings occurred they were fewer in number and smaller in scale than in pre pandemic times The good news is that member usage of the Club has been strong and our membership pipeline is in extremely good shape with 12 families on the veranda and another 38 on the waiting list We expect to end 2021 with a strong cash position The financial oversight provided by Jon Nusink Monica Mick and the Finance and Audit Committee has been superb The annual meetings to review the 2022 budget were recently held A few days later our Ontario government decided to make rather significant changes to the minimum wage increasing the general minimum wage to 15 from 4 14 35 and eliminating the special minimum wage rate for servers previously 12 45 Coupled with the current general inflationary pressures this has a significant affect on the Club and caused management the Finance and Audit Committee and the Board to revisit the budget At the conclusion of those deliberations the board approved a 4 increase to the dues for main member categories including Resident Shareholders The increase will be slightly greater for a few categories where we are aligning with market conditions The Board approved 1m of regular capital expenditures which is similar to most years with the larger items being Clubhouse and Tennis Chalet patio furniture and air conditioning compressors Not approved yet but under discussion as mentioned in the previous issue of Club Life are special capital expenditures such as enhancements to the equipment and layout of the Glenmore Kitchen a permanent shading solution for the Terrace a modification of the Oxford Room and a renovation of the Grill Room Glenmore Room and Terrace lounge The renovation of the member dining areas will be subject to a membership vote likely in the spring of 2022 with full communications to take place prior The contractual arrangements for the golf course infrastructure project are coming together and the project is on track to start in August of 2022 On behalf of your Board of Directors I wish you and your families good health and happiness for the holiday season and continued good health and best wishes for 2022 W I NS TE P RR I2N0G2 12 20022 02
WINTER REPORT Jon Nusink GM COO jnusink londonhuntclub com Happy Winter 2021 2022 This past season did not fail to excite and challenge once again Despite a couple more lockdowns and revolving restrictions imposed I can confidently say that 2021 was a successful and eventful year Needless to say however we are really looking forward to 2022 With it come hopes of a more normal and predictable operating year In other words perhaps a bit more balanced Balance can be defined as a condition in which different elements are equal or in the correct proportions We as evolved humans do best when life is in balance With balance comes happiness and peace Each of us strive to find balance in different ways be it a work life balance or diet exercise or even sleep awake balance to name a few common ones You could argue that one thing that the pandemic has highlighted is the importance of balance Or on the contrary it has illustrated where balance is not achieved and the challenges that this imposes For example being restricted from travelling or visiting friends really highlighted the importance of a balanced social life and ability to explore and experience It brought forward the importance of family and friends birthday parties anniversaries and funerals And it exposed some socio economic imbalances around the world Just a few years ago writers and analysts wrote piles of articles about the game of golf the future of the private country club and how it was antiquated and declining The new generation didn t have time to spend on a golf course and had other comparable options for dining out Or so they said Now the same mainstream media marvel at how the constraints of the pandemic created a perfect storm that has driven a resurgence of interest and participation in our favourite past times The surge to golf and tennis and the safe secure atmosphere of a private club is a result of the Club s many offerings at a safe distance enjoying the outdoors and close to home As lockdowns capacity restrictions and lack of alternative recreational activities persisted 2021 realized another strong year of member engagement and participation Golf totalled just under 32 000 rounds Down from 36 000 last year but still higher than our desired 25 000 27 000 from pre pandemic days There is increased play in every demographic but none more than in the Spouse and Dependent Categories Tennis grew another 3 over 2020 s totals which were already 30 above norms Proof that Golf and Tennis can be an oasis from the stresses of life The renewed demand has prompted the Board to focus on capital projects intended to enhance member enjoyment in particular areas such as the construction of our new pickleball courts which opened in October Another example is the investment in a more permanent and customizable shade structure on the Terrace This elaborate system which is planned to be constructed throughout the winter in time for use in the spring spans over half the area of the Terrace and includes motorized shades on the roof to customize your preference for shade or sun or to protect against all but heavy rain showers It will be complete with shade curtains for that pesky blinding sunset to the west as well as heaters fans and lighting to extend the patio season and make it more enjoyable against certain weather conditions On a slightly smaller scale the Glenmore Patio and Tennis Chalet will receive new furniture to better enjoy the outdoors in these areas The Golf Course Enhancement Project is progressing as planned with a start date after the August long weekend During the project there will always be at least 9 holes open for play and most of the time more than that The Golf Committee has developed a great calendar of events for 2022 with all the events requiring 18 holes taking place prior to construction This calendar can be viewed on the website shortly A Restaurant Renovation Ad Hoc Committee has been continuing the prior work of the Clubhouse Committee to determine enhancements and upgrades to our member dining rooms I look forward to communicating these exciting ideas early in the new year 5 WINTER 2021 2022
All of this is intended to put us in a great position with superior facilities and infrastructure to enhance member satisfaction and accommodate increased demand for many years to come The Membership Committee has shifted focus recently on keeping our roster full to strategies on how to deal with our growing waitlist which now includes nearly 50 families waiting to join This translates to a wait of 2 to 3 years or more at this point depending on attrition Another great indicator of how we are doing as a Club and our relevance in the lives of people today In September the Board raised the entrance fee for joining the Club from 40 000 to 50 000 with a 5 year payment option at 55 000 Further discussion was had about raising it further in a couple years time but the Board of the day will determine that strategy when the time is right On the flipside of our enthusiastic participation surge comes a stark reality of stresses on labour and resources We are by no means immune to supply issues and like everyone else a new stark reality of labour shortages puts an even greater challenge on delivering consistently good service levels In fact never in my career have I seen it so bad Over the past two years our staff turnover has been the greatest as well as the competition for good staff At first it would have been easy to blame a shallow labour pool on government programs In fact when the CERB started it mimicked by design I think what our entry level wage earners would have made working Without any real qualifications to receive it why would a young student work all summer when they could spend it anywhere else than at a place that requires hard work and discipline making the same amount of money But soon enough the programs dried up and the labour force did not improve So I m glad to see that it wasn t laziness that brought it on Every department at the Club felt the hardship but the food and beverage department felt it most My theory is that after many lockdowns capacity restrictions and uncertainty these workers decided that the grass actually was greener on the other side no pun intended to our grounds crew Most found employment in other industries with consistent hours sometimes more pay and the ability to have better work life balance with weekends and holidays off All of this compounded with increased demand at the Club being serviced by a decreased work force Those that did show up and stuck around had to do even more and work harder to help in achieving our desired level of service and finished product A 6 WINTER 2021 2022
vicious circle to say the least In other words our biggest speed bump of the past two years has been this imbalance Time some creative management and a dedicated core of staff will get us through this challenge and I am confident we will find success on the other side Our greatest asset is our staff and if it was socially and ethically acceptable I would give each one of them a huge hug and maybe buy them each a trip at an all inclusive resort for their efforts recently Each year we recognize staff who have passed quinquennial milestones and thank them for their dedicated service to the Club This year I am proud to recognize the following people for their milestone Pete Willems Bar Manager 30 years Tamara Reading Grounds Trap Skeet 25 years Ben Eng House Department Manager 20 years Tom Russell Banquet Sous Chef 10 years Cameron Gillespie Food and Beverage Tennis 5 years Sarah Dramnitzke Restaurant Sous Chef 5 years and Monica Mick Director of Finance and Administration 5 years I would be remiss to recognize Mark McCallum who has retired as our Equipment Manager Mechanic after 36 years of service to the Club For so many years Mark kept our fleet of equipment running and the blades sharpened to a surgeon s precision in order to achieve the quality of golf course we appreciate all season long He is one of those unsung heroes that you rarely see but absolutely cannot survive without his hard work and talent We wish Mark a long and healthy retirement with breakfasts spend with his wife Pat instead of being at the Club hours before sunrise You may ask who currently holds the record for years served at the Club That honour is still held by Deb Dale our irreplaceable Assistant Superintendent who started working at the Club in 1982 FACES IN THE CLUB NICOLE NICHOLAS PASTRY CHEF Bio I started at the Club 6 years ago in housekeeping I have always had a passion for cooking and hoped I could work my way into the kitchen Thankfully Chef gave me a chance and I have now been working in the kitchen for 3 years During this time I have completed my culinary apprenticeship at Fanshawe College and I am now studying for my Red Seal My experience at the Club has been amazing I have so many great chefs to learn from I love that we are encouraged to be creative and can experiment with new dishes I m excited to continue my journey as a chef at the Club and share my creations with so many great people Editors note You could say Nicole was almost born at the Club since she is the daughter of Kim Lamount Keating who worked for the Club for 31 years and retired in 2017 And finally congratulations to our Director of Tennis Adam Baranowski who currently holds the 1 position in Canada s National Ranking for Senior Men over 45 with recent ITF victories of 1st in singles and 1st in doubles on home soil in 2019 3rd in doubles and 4th in singles at the Canadian Nationals in Toronto in 2019 and 1st place in singles at the Seniors Grade 2 event in Toronto in 2020 Normally the staff enjoy a Christmas event at which these awards are announced but due to the hesitancy to mass gather and avoid an outbreak amongst the staff and to promote a healthy work family balance the staff will forego their usual dinner and dance event and will be celebrating on a Sunday in late January for an outdoor Family Winter Staff Event where all of their family members will be invited to celebrate at the Club to have some outdoor fun and cooking and enjoy winter after a very long season s a l o h c i N e l o c Ni On behalf of the Staff and Management team at the Club I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a bright healthy and balanced New Year 7 WINTER 2021 2022

The Return to NORMAL Michael Stark Executive Chef mstark londonhuntclub com instagram com huntclubfoodanddrink With all signs pointing towards a return to normal for the new year the food and beverage department is excited to once again offer exciting and engaging events for our members These events will focus on engaging members of all ages and interests The food and beverage department will be offering cooking classes with various levels of difficulty From easy casual fare to more challenging formal offerings the classes are designed to match the various levels of ability that our membership has We will also be offering a children s cooking class that will feature easy to create foods parents are welcome to stay and watch or have dinner here at the Club By offering various levels of cooking classes we aim to engage all cooking abilities Engaging events for children and families was top of mind for us when brainstorming for 2022 One event that we are excited to announce is a casual lunch and then a show put on by Little Ray s Reptile Experience Several animals will visit the Club with Little Ray s and children will be educated on these wonderful animals Stay tuned more family events announcements as we go through the year On the culinary side of things we will be having a spice dinner which will showcase some of the more unusual spices from around the world in a multi course meal We are planning wine dinners as well These more upscale dinners will be a great way for mature members to have a date night or experience new wines and flavours with friends Some of the events we are planning will be hosted outdoors for those that love the fresh air or may still be shy to mix indoors with other people These events range from cooking based events to simple fun days of winter activity and hot chocolate We have tried to create events that span multiple generations and fill different niches for all to enjoy These events will be posted in upcoming calendars and communicated via the weekly eNews If you have any ideas for events here at the Club please feel free to reach our and share them 12 WINTER 2021 2022

CELEBRATING OUR WORLD CLASS WINE CELLAR Michael Hearse Director of Clubhouse Operations mhearse londonhuntclub com One of the unique and special features of the food and beverage amenities at the Club is the expertly curated wine cellar managed by Bar Manager Pete Willems Comprised of a diverse collection of red and white wines ports and champagnes it truly is one of the finest in the Club industry Through extensive research review and tastings wines are added or removed from the cellar thoughtfully with the goal of presenting the best membership experience both now and in the future Each wine is hand selected to not only satisfy a diverse palate but also to broaden perspectives and represent as well as educate on all regions of the wine world Currently holding over 3 000 bottles representing 294 different labels and with formats ranging from standard 750 mL bottles to a Balthazar 12L of 2015 Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino Riserva crucial elements in this area such as temperature vibration light and moisture are controlled and monitored closely for optimum storage As with all the Club s amenities it is ever evolving and one of the many reason s London Hunt and Country Club is a premier facility in Canada It is an incredible asset and resource for the membership to utilize not only during the holiday season but for all occasions Futures Program Additional to the main holdings a portion of the wine cellar is dedicated to what is known as a Futures Program These wines ports and champagnes are purchased with the intention of aging before their release for service They are diverse in their origin value longevity and audience From Grand Cru Classe Bordeaux and breathtaking Barolos to finely crafted Burgundian Pinot Noir and Vin Santo these wines add a dimension to our cellar and are presented only during their optimal consumption window so that they are at their best These holdings are an investment that also allow the Club to upon their determined release provide them to the membership at a better value when compared to the market rate Futures Program Verticals An element of the Futures Program verticals are consecutive vintages of the same wine that are held to represent the evolution of that wine from year to year capturing any variation in growing season bottling or production For example the Club currently has a vertical of Plumpjack Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley representing the vintages of 2009 2010 and 2011 This will allow our Food and Beverage Team to arrange and present a bespoke experience for our members in the future that could contain a few or all the vintages currently in the cellar paired with epicurean creations from our Culinary Team Wine Cellar Dinners The layout of our wine cellar very fortunately provides us the opportunity to host private dinners for up to eight people in an unrivaled atmosphere Surrounded by a dazzling array of bottles and in the soft glow of candlelight members can create a customized menu with wine pairings for each course to celebrate an anniversary host clients or just share an intimate evening with friends It truly is one of the experiences that separates us from many other Clubs and restaurants and a service we sincerely enjoy presenting as hospitality professionals If you are interested in working with our incredible Team on developing such an evening please contact one of our Food and Beverage Department Managers So while you are celebrating this holiday season or on your next visit to the Club don t hesitate to engage Pete or any one of our Team Members for a recommendation or tour of this amazing area of the Club From our Hunt Club Family to yours we wish you the very best for a safe and happy holiday season and a Happy New Year 14 WINTER 2021 2022
CHRISTMAS COCKTAILS Chris Carnegie Food and Beverage Manager ccarnegie londonhuntclub com instagram com huntclubfoodanddrink The past 18 months have certainly been a wild ride and I don t have to spend time to explain why As the holiday season creeps around the corner it always gives us time to reflect on the year and manifest new hope of the future Christmas 2020 found a lot of us unable to visit and celebrate the happiest season of the year with our loved ones and friends Christmas 2021 is looking much more promising as the province nears a 90 vaccination rate This holiday season there will definitely be a strong interest in larger reunions of friends and family at home This is obviously an exciting notion and there is no better way to celebrate the return to some normalization than delicious holiday cocktails As we were thrusted into lockdowns and unable to go to bars and restaurants many of us took to making our own cocktails at home Online inspirations were a key for us to hone our inner bartending skills Whether it was recipes YouTube videos or virtual classes we took matters into our own hands to recreate our favourite cocktails Studies have shown that 2 out of 3 adults have continued to make their own cocktails at home even though bars and restaurants have opened It is also proven that 53 of households now own a cocktail shaker which is up from 34 So as we plan for hosting Christmas parties at home we will be excited to share our new craft and delicious concoctions with our friends and family If you are looking for new cocktail ideas or simply coming to the Club to host a family dinner or party then we have you covered here at the London Hunt and Country Club Our bartending team led by Pete Willems have been working hard to create our holiday cocktail list that we are positive you will enjoy Here are four cocktails off of our list for you to try at home or enjoy here at the Club Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays 15 ZACH RUDELL S JOLLY JELLY BELLY In a shaker add 1 5 oz Amaretto 0 75 oz Limencello 0 5 oz Maple syrup 1 egg white Shake for 1 to 2 minutes and then strain over ice in a rocks glass MATT PAPARELLA S CHRISTMAS CRANBERRY FIZZ Fill glass with Ice and combine Juice from a half squeezed lemon 1 5 oz Gin 1 oz Cranberry thyme simple syrup 2 dashes Angostura bitters Top with soda and stir Thyme Cranberry Simple Syrup In a small pot add cup water cup white sugar and cup cranberries Cook on medium heat until sugar is dissolved and cranberries are broken down 10 15 minutes Stir with a whisk remove from heat and add 4 fresh thyme sprigs Cool to room temperature and strain MATT MACFARLANE S MISTLETOE In a shaker add 1 5 oz Bourbon 1 oz Orange juice 2 oz Cranberry juice shake and pour over ice Add 1 oz of ginger beer Top with soda water Garnish with orange slice cranberries and mint sprigs KENNY S WINTER NEGRONI In a mixing glass add 1oz campari 1oz gin I prefer botanist 1oz sweet vermouth pour over fresh ice add garnish top with 5 oz winter syrup Garnish dehydrated orange slice Winter Simple Syrup In a small pot add cup of water cup of white sugar cup orange juice cup cherry juice 1tbsp dried juniper berries and half a cinnamon stick Cook on medium heat for 10 to 15 minutes consistently stirring with a whisk Cool to room temperatures and strain WINTER 2021 2022

FINDING BALANCE Chris Lawson Director of Golf clawson londonhuntclub com instagram com londonhuntclub_proshop As golfers similar to any athlete we are always looking for ways to improve our game While improving our golf game is a worthwhile goal some fall short of achieving results for a few reasons Golfers tend to fall into one extreme or the other with their approach to improving their game For others golf is one big experiment where they are continually trying new techniques On the other hand some are reluctant to make any changes and instead stick to what they know and what they are comfortable with Finding the right balance somewhere in the middle can help golfers make the changes in their game they wish to see and be successful As a Golf Professional my instincts and experience tell me that most members and golfers in general encounter this obstacle The game can be such a challenge that we are constantly looking for new answers or a quick 17 fix In doing this we are unable to commit to one solution long enough to recognize their progress or see results I find myself gravitating towards the middle as a better answer for most members Finding a balance between making necessary changes to improve your game whether it be technical mental or physical yet committing to these adjustments long enough to see the benefits One of my mentors and coaches used to quote Einstein s definition of insanity doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results At some point in order to develop as a golfer we have to make adjustments As the game changes and develops we must adapt to these changes and develop too While there may be no single right answer staying stagnant will not yield different results WINTER 2021 2022
Last week a member and I were discussing this very topic He asked me to help set a realistic goal for his game and in that conversation he asked if I intended on making any changes to my game I surprised him with my answer This off season my golf changes involve fitness No I do not intend to channel my inner Bryson Dechambeau but I do intend to work on my core flexibility and rotation When looking for ways to develop our golf game it is beneficial to look beyond just technical improvements My hip rotation limits my ability to turn my core fully so this off season seems to be the ideal time to focus on this area of my game Putting in work off the course can be just as important as practicing on the course or the range I will be working to increase my core flexibility to improve my mobility and achieve a greater rotation Having a strong foundation helps to achieve improved consistency and power in your swing Building core strength allows me to have more control over my swing leading to improved accuracy I do not consider this a major swing overhaul but one that will lead to more consistent ball striking which in turn should enhance my enjoyment of the game Not all changes need to be technical or step by step reconstructions of your swing grip stance or posture For me increased flexibility is something I feel will only help improve aspects of my current swing as I am not trying to change my swing entirely One final component to consider is time You must be patient and give any tweak or changes time to play themselves out One or two rounds isn t enough evidence For the change I intend to make one yoga class or one week at the gym isn t the answer It will instead be a process but that will be the reward Setting a goal committing to the process and seeing it through Becoming a better golfer is a delicate balance of changes You have to judge when changes make sense and find a balance between minor tweaks and fullblown overhauls to your game swing or mindset Most of the answers are likely somewhere in the middle Being intentional with your changes and giving them time to develop are elements that will help to improve your success I will include updates on my progress throughout the coming months On behalf of the Professional Staff and our entire Golf Operations Team we want to wish all of our Club members and their families the best for the upcoming Holiday Season and the New Year ahead Merry Christmas WINTER GOLF SCHOOL HOURS Our game evolves from game to game season to season Some changes stick with us and others fade I myself have tinkered with my game on occasion since I started to play competitively over 25 years ago December 24 to January 3 Here are just a couple small changes I have made Grip changes changing to overlap from interlock based on neutralizing my hands Shortening my driver shaft 45 75 to 45 led to more accuracy without giving up much or any distance Studying statistics by tracking my own data and viewing online data this gave me insight to make smarter strategic on course decisions Sunday 9 00 a m to 3 00 p m As you can see these changes aren t considered drastic but have made a difference for me and my game If you are considering a change within your own game albeit equipment or swing change mental or strategic approach our team of Professionals can work with you to set realistic goals and establish a plan Our Professional Staff are always available to assist with making modifications that are tailored to you and your game to ensure success 18 Closed January 4 to January 18 Monday Closed Tuesday 9 00 a m to 8 00 p m Wednesday 9 00 a m to 8 00 p m Thursday 9 00 a m to 8 00 p m Friday 9 00 a m to 6 00 p m Saturday 9 00 a m to 5 00 p m January 19 to Course Opening Sunday 9 00 a m to 3 00 p m Monday Closed Tuesday 9 00 a m to 8 00 p m Wednesday 9 00 a m to 8 00 p m Thursday 9 00 a m to 8 00 p m Friday 9 00 a m to 6 00 p m Saturday 9 00 a m to 5 00 p m WINTER 2021 2022
WINTER GROUNDS REPORT Jayson Griffiths Director of Agronomy and Grounds jgriffiths londonhuntclub com twitter com GriffithsJayson The view of the last remaining leaves brings a feeling of calm peace reflection and speaks to the end of another busy golfing season at the London Hunt and Country Club In reviewing seasons past each year is remembered for various environmental pressures or extremes this season was no exception as a healthy golf course awakened early to a cold dry spring immediately followed April 17th by another Provincial lockdown Golf returned May 22nd and quickly regained strength as could be witnessed by the exceptional league and individual member play While the season was not without its challenges including the first summer flooding of the Thames River in recent memory the golf course held up admirably to the new normal not normal summer conditions The commitment and investment the membership has made to improving plant growing environments through improved sunlight airflow drainage via the implementation of Drill and Fill Graden and DryJect plus light frequent sand topdressing truly made the difference in surface performance during 2021 FALL REPORT This said the proverbial winter weather question always arises this time of year Will La Nina replace El Nino Does the heavy acorn abundance mean a prolonged winter Weather prognosticators and the Farmer s Almanac become quick references The answers to these questions are not pre determined but the intensive measures we at Grounds are implementing again this fall to strengthen the plants to help mitigate any potential turf loss has begun As we progress into December and the Holiday Season there are five Grounds Team Members who work tirelessly behind the scenes in making each day on course an enjoyable one Our Equipment Manager Mark McCallum retired this past November after 36 seasons of faithfully keeping the equipment fleet running in top form Although Mark will always have a special place in our Grounds Team s history we are excited for the future as our new Equipment Manager Taylor Cairns his family and loveable dog Mack will be joining the London Hunt and Country Club in mid December Associate Superintendent Deb Dale and 2nd Assistants Matt Deans Rob Wilson plus Assistant Mechanic Randy Rau deserve credit as they continue to invest themselves not only in the success of the golf course but the success and well being of our thirty five seasonal employees who come together daily to prepare this special and historic property Winter certainly is not down time but provides a time to reflect enjoy the successes of seasons past and prepare for the next For golf course superintendents in cold climates the off season as in baseball football and most professional sporting activities never really ends The reality is the biggest gains in golf course improvements can be achieved during the shoulder seasons More importantly it is a time to enjoy the peaceful serenity of the London Hunt and Country Club and to celebrate the company of family and friends over the holiday and winter season 19 WINTER 2021 2022
The following list of activities does not encompass all projects performed during the winter months but provides an understanding of what winter golf course maintenance entails Snow removal from parking lots and roads Monitoring of snow and ice on greens for potential removal On course winter pathway clearing and ski trail maintenance Continuing education regional seminars turf grass conferences and recertification workshops Tree health care pruning undergrowth and maintenance programs Annual equipment preventative maintenance and repairs 100 pieces of equipment 50 reels to grind Maintenance facility improvements Golf course accessory refurbishment Team planning building and recruitment Integrated Pest Management data collection water use records and reporting Trap and Skeet 41 shoots 90 000 clay targets consumed This winter season hiking trails will again be prepared and marked for both the casual dog walker ski and ambitious snowshoe enthusiast We do ask however to be mindful of the Trap and Skeet facility as the golf course is closed during Wednesday and Saturday shoots throughout the winter months Signage and traffic control measures will be located throughout the winter landscape communicating areas with limited to no access to better preserve the turf below The Grounds Staff are present throughout the winter months to assist members while enjoying your outdoor playground Often a casual conversation arises regarding the nature sightings of the day our resident eagles muskrat deer coyote and the elusive beaver Tracks and animal signs of all kinds can be discovered when walking throughout the woodlots paw prints provide great clues to the amateur sleuth We at Grounds are thankful for your support and encouraged by your kind words smiles and interactions witnessed daily not only agronomic support but the kindness and genuine sincerity expressed on a human level by all membership meant so much to so many affected by family loss and personal challenges In the spirit of Christmas a fresh blanket of powdered snow will soon arrive where the winter wonderland will present itself for members and families to walk and enjoy this beautiful landscape We look forward to seeing you playing your golf course and the exciting Master Plan Infrastructure Enhancements that lie ahead in 2022 Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and your family In Memoriam Paul Skinner October 3 1940 September 22 2021 20 WINTER 2021 2022
PERSONAL TRAINING Alicia Clow Ennis Fitness Manager aclow ennis londonhuntclub com Facebook com LondonHuntClubFitnessCentre It is no secret that the majority of people in the world find exercise challenging Physically it can be challenging mentally it can be even more challenging Motivation to start an exercise plan is hard enough to find but often it s motivation to keep up your exercise routine that is the true barrier One way to get that motivation is to have someone hold you accountable This is where personal training may be the tool you need This could be meeting with someone two to three times a week it could be once a week meeting and then doing homework and it can sometimes be as simple as a monthly check in However it looks if it gets you moving more moving right and getting results it may be for you If you have been thinking about getting back to the gym or have never come but would like to here are some people who may be able to inspire you to do so You will notice that it takes some dedication but they are all not alone Contact me to learn more In my late forties I was helping a friend carry a canoe up a mild incline to put on the car after a river canoe trip I found I had to stop several times to rest and catch my breath My friend who is no poster boy for fitness remarked that I should do something about my poor stamina I was helping to raise a large family and run a small business and felt I never really had time for me things I took stock and realized I had crept up to about sixty pounds over my ideal weight and my fitness level was awful Being a farm kid who could throw a forty pound bale of hay up ten tiers on a wagon all day that was embarrassing First thing I realized from reading weight loss and fitness are not necessarily connected You can focus on one or the other or both I had both problems so I decided to make a change The second thing I realized was this was a change in lifestyle if I did not want to experience the serial diet workout failures people often go through It was a commitment to reorder my life Once that decision was made the rest fell into place I started at a YMCA gym in the small town where I lived at the time and set up a routine of one hour workouts at least three times a week Eventually I moved to London for work and coincidentally the Club had just added gym facilities in a renovation I found on my self led workouts that I got bored with the same routine all the time and I was afraid my technique was not as good as it could be so I tried out the personal training program the Club introduced I found that was transformative I had an assessment to determine my condition and plan a way forward It was reassuring to have a professional to ensure my technique was good and put in the time to design a routine that was interesting and beneficial It was also helpful that I had an appointment to keep That ensured I didn t skip visits Hard to believe but my workouts are fun My trainer suggested I try an annual target to do as many chin ups as my age on my birthday I have been doing that for the last three years The target this year is sixty eight in less than twenty minutes I am already in training for my birthday in January I have also started yoga for my mental health along with the workout This process has changed my life I have dropped ten strokes off my golf handicap I sleep better and have virtually no aches and pains I jump out of bed every morning and do my routine of pull ups to start my day with a burst of energy I have a partner in my personal well being with my trainer I can only speak for myself but I enjoy my life much more now that I am fit SANDY WELLMAN 21 WINTER 2021 2022
Upon my retirement golf and other outdoor physical activities became my priorities Well that was a bigger transition than I had imagined Within a few weeks everything hurt low back pain achilles tendonitis and I could go on Who would have thought that 30 years in an office was not a good preparation for an active retirement life What to do A fellow member suggested I try working with a personal trainer at our own gym Within a few sessions the back pain was gone and working together we tackled systematically all pain points By staying with the sessions over time I now can play and practice as much as I want pain free I am stronger and more flexible than I was when we started on this journey almost 10 years ago When something starts hurting we can address the issue quickly and I am back on the course pain free within a session or two Together we are defying the aging process My relationship with a personal trainer has truly been a life changer PAUL BRISSON When Alicia asked me if I would write a note regarding my experience with using the gym and having a trainer I was excited by the prompt to evaluate it Firstly I should say that I had not previously been a gym person I had never wanted to go to one and had no plans to make a gym a part of my life With age came the realization that your body is like your car it needs maintenance I had cared for both of my parents in different assisted care facilities as they aged and when my dad died at 101 years of age long after having open heart and cancer surgery I realized that probably his longevity might be due not only to genetics but also to the fact that he walked every day of his life for many many years Hence my motivation I started with group classes and while I really enjoyed them I often came away with strained muscles not the instructors fault All mine I then started seeing Steve on a one to one basis and continue to do so we even did virtual sessions during the lockdown Working with Steve means so much to me We work on strength mobility balance and general overall fitness One to one guidance has meant an ability to switch the form of exercise to shore up weaknesses and to adapt an exercise to my needs abilities and liabilities I feel very fortunate to belong to the Hunt Club and have access to the supports such as the gym and the trainers Feeling fit helps me to face my older years with some confidence that I am doing what I can to enjoy a healthy and strong life for as long as possible Need to see those grandchildren grow up ROSEMARY LOGAN 22 WINTER 2021 2022
HAR TRU Adam Baranowski Director of Tennis abaranowski londonhuntclub com instagram com londonhuntclub_tennis It all started back in 1931 when a contractor named Henry Alexander Robinson HAR engineered a new clay court surface using American stone first mined in Pennsylvania The surface had a true TRU green color and ball bounce made from a billion year old Pre Cambrian metabasalt found in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia Extremely hard and angular in nature two significant qualities when it comes to building a clay tennis court The shape helps the stone particles to lock together to form a stable playing surface The firmness and rigidity provide exceptional durability The natural green color is classically clay instantly recognizable and improves visibility as well The stone is pressed crushed screened and mixed in the precise dimensions necessary to produce a stable playing surface It is then installed over a porous base of crushed stone aggregate to produce the final product Like the maintenance practices of a golf course court maintenance is a specialized art unto itself Daily maintenance starts with brushing a Har Tru court with a gator rake not your typical rake by any means This magical tool which is dragged behind a golf cart scarifies the top surface more than your regular drag brush It redistributes the loose top dressing material and smooths it out before and after play Once that is completed all lines are swept clean with a line master Since brushing the court after each play dries the court and surface prematurely we have it done just prior to watering the court and when there is need for it Each night after play we have a night sweeping crew that comes in and brushes all ten courts with a drag brush This ensures smooth surface throughout before water comes on Once the courts are groomed and brushed we then water the courts using an above ground sprinkler system This ensures the court is kept firm smooth and it has proper footing grip At most clubs including ours watering is done overnight We have a timer set up in such a way that the watering cycle comes on three times during the night and also during the day Throughout a week month we adjust the watering cycle depending on the temperature outside We monitor tweak the schedule to support the court with enough water to keep it at an optimal playing level until the next watering cycle Rolling the courts is just as important especially when coming out of the winter At such time when courts are just coming out of the freeze thaw environment rolling takes place daily in order to reach an optimal level of firmness It also allows the courts to play faster and prevents too much loose top dressing material from building up on the court surface As the weather gets warmer and surfaces compress rolling becomes intermittent On top of daily court maintenance we also have one project that comes up every ten or so years Laser grading and scarifying brings the courts back to optimal performance HAR TRU courts require 1 of Har Tru surface material for best playability court stability and moisture retention Over time rain and regular play will cause Har Tru material to wash off the court and shift from the high side of the court to the low side of the court In our case it was from the north side of each court to the south side where the slope of the courts begin to flatten out and surface depth of 1 was no longer visible By using laser guided grading equipment as well as deep scarifying our contractor was able to remove excess material at the low end of the courts and add new material 2 tons per court at the high end of the courts to restore the proper court slope once again I am looking forward to testing them already but I guess I will have to wait till spring of 2022 23 WINTER 2021 2022
