Board of Directors PRESIDENT S MESSAGE John Vander Hoeven johnvanderhoeven1 gmail com Most conversations start with a comment about the weather The golf course and tennis courts took some serious abuse from Mother Nature with the floods in February the ice storm in April and the wind storm in early May The Club is missing a few trees and limbs and the courts lost some surfacing however Jayson Griffiths and his hard working maintenance crews continue to polish our gems By the time this issue of Club Life is published hopefully the long winter and rough spring start will be forgotten Member engagement at the Club is at an all time high The opening receptions planned entirely by our passionate and talented staff for both the golf and the tennis sections were enjoyed by many The commemorative book Legacy completed by Richard Bain was released and reflects all the Club is I particularly enjoyed reading the eloquently worded foreword by John Nash and all of the heartfelt comments from a number of Members The photo journal is a true statement of today s London Hunt and Country Club and reflects our vibrant Membership the varied activities and just as importantly those people who make the Club tick 3 As they say on the Golf Channel Live Under Par Record numbers have again signed up for league play and the success is putting our pro teams organizational skills to the challenge Golf and tennis leagues and match play are in full swing There are a number of new Members who have joined over the past several months I encourage each of you to take advantage of the many activities and events at the Club It s a great place to spend with your family and social time and get away from your e mail As I indicated at the AGM one of the major endeavors of the Club this year will be the development of the Master Plan for the Golf Course led by Doug MacKenzie and the Golf Course Standards Committee Stay tuned as Doug and the committee collaborate with the Membership Jayson Griffith and Tim McKeiver to develop a long term plan based on the objectives described by Doug in the 2017 summer edition of Club Life After a bit of a delay the Tennis Chalet renovation is now complete Another major project that has been planned for some time will be the paving of SUMMER 2018

the drive and parking surfaces which is slated for later this year Financially the Club entered the year with apprehension given the increase in minimum wage and the ripple effect on all costs A number of initiatives were undertaken over the winter months with minimal impact on the Membership to mitigate the new legislation While I did not want to discuss the weather again it does have an impact on revenues and expenses and the late spring start was not helpful The Club is tracking fairly well in comparison to budget to the end of April As a reminder please remember to make dining reservations in advance This will allow our management and staff to better meet your expectations I was recently speaking with a Member who had joined with his family at the beginning of the 2017 season He recanted how his wife and he had been discussing their first year as Members and she commented why they had not joined years earlier This is a common testimonial from new Members If you do have friends considering the Club please 4 refer them to Jon Nusink who will introduce them to our exceptional facilities and outline the application process The Club s management and staff are continually focused on the Member experience On every visit to the Club I am continually impressed by the efforts of many individuals both on the front lines and behind the scenes As Members we are privileged and should appreciate the tremendous efforts of these people Enjoy the summer and see you at the Club John Vander Hoeven Club President SUMMER 2018

SUMMERREPORT Jon Nusink GM COO jnusink londonhuntclub com Although spring seemed to arrive late with an awful April it quickly turned to summer which made for a very busy end of May at the Club The trap and skeet season concluded in mid April and the tennis and golf leagues have been experiencing record attendance so far We are looking forward to a great summer season at the Club Member usage in the dining rooms seem to be the busiest they have been as Members are enjoying the nice weather on the Terrace or the Chef s new menus in the Glenmore and Oxford Rooms We had the grand re opening of our fully renovated Tennis Chalet on May 25th 120 people were in attendance for a cocktail party at the Chalet with some coming back to the Clubhouse for a late dinner which contributed to over 230 diners that evening also a record The new Chalet includes a larger Pro Shop enlarged locker and bathroom facilities a new bar new paint and flooring a new patio and fire pit This was phase 2 which added to the already replaced exterior siding and windows A very special thank you to the Property Committee and Tennis Committee who have been overseeing the project to its completion for over two years And a very special thank you to Cheri Bryant who managed the final decorating and furniture selection It is not an easy task to take everyone s suggestions and narrow it down to a concept that everyone can be happy with but I would say she was very successful Last but not least thank you to the tennis players who waited patiently for the completion and had to endure without a facility for the first month of play Now that it s over it will serve us well for many years to come As most know this summer we will play host to two charity golf events The first will be the Hockey Canada Foundation led by Wayne Dunn and Jeff Macoun The event will be held on Tuesday June 19 at both the Hunt Club and Redtail The aim is to raise between 400 000 and 500 000 for the charity half of which will remain in London to benefit local youth The golf portion is sold out but tables for the gala the night before at the London Convention Centre are still available The second tournament is the Prusty 4 Kids tournament which will be on Monday July 30 with a special show featuring golf legend David Feherty the night prior on the driving range This event is led by Members Dave Moore and Brandon Prust who host the golf event every other year and have been very successful in providing a great deal of funds for local children s charities In 2017 as part of the Club s strategic plan process the Board decided to accept two charity events that would both benefit local charity and the Club Upon conclusion of the events the Board will assess the value and decide if we should host similar events in the future At this point I have no event booked for 2019 and am currently considering any inquiries that our Members might have The basic criteria is that the event must be a higher end charitable event that benefits local causes would contribute financially to the Club and causes minimal disruption to our Members Membership at the Club remains near our target of 485 Shareholder families but we continue to accept applications Our new Intermediate categories with more competitive dues and entrance fee options are proving to be very well received There will be an Intermediate Meet and Greet Event on Wednesday June 13 where Members under 40 years old will have a chance to socialize while learning more about the Club s programs for this age group Since the last edition of the Club Life Magazine we have welcomed a number of new families into the Club Michael and Diane Smith were sponsored by Adam Bain and Perry Ferguson Michael has spent many years with Ellis Don and is presently redeveloping a small business in Muskoka Muskoka Lakes Marine Diane keeps very busy managing the Smith household and having raised two sets of twin boys Ryan and Matthew 26 and Scott and Evan 24 John and Ashley MacArthur were sponsored by Peter Channer and Glenn MacKinnon John and Ashley are the owners of London based L H Smith Fruit Company Both enjoy activities such as hockey traveling tennis and golf They have two children Taylor 3 and Jaxon 2 Jesse Olsen and Candice MacLaren were sponsored by Jason Lessif and Michael Malleck Jesse is employed by Freedom Mobile as a Dealer Business Manager and Candice is a registered nurse with London Health Sciences Centre They are excited to start their Intermediate years with the Club and their extended family David and JoAnn Olsen also come to us through Jason Lessif and Michael Malleck as David and Jason are business associates through Cargill McDonald s Restaurants of Canada Both David and JoAnn were born in London and raised their family here 5 SUMMER 2018

plan was a new irrigation system and possible holding pond greens sustainability maintenance and playability bunker conditions maintenance and playability optimization of maintenance costs addressing areas of poor drainage and ensuring enjoyable playability for a broader range of golfer ability We will be moving through the process for the long range plan over the coming months by prioritization of the goals and objectives creating a visual master plan of areas of improvement determining optional approaches to improvement estimating probable costs and finally creating a recommendation of an implementation plan for the Board to consider In the late fall before the snow came we commissioned a geo mapping exercise of the entire property In the spring Michael and Chris Hurdzan spent two days on site for a follow up visit to fine tune their ideas and conduct a question and answer session with the Golf Course Standards and Conditioning Committee We now have a preliminary document with initial thoughts and comments that the Committee will work through with Hurdzan Towards late summer or early fall the Membership will be able to weigh in on the recommendations Good luck to all those competing in golf and tennis events both at the Club and away Just spending a few hours walking around the Club you can sense the excitement that comes from people enjoying everything the Club has to VANILLA Michael Stark Executive Chef mstark londonhuntclub com Vanilla has become an ubiquitous spice used throughout the world and has many uses in the kitchen Vanilla beans have a very complex set of flavors that vary from species to species There are several species of vanilla including Orchid V Planifolia V Tahitiensis V Pompona which are the most commonly cultivated Not only do the distinct species lend themselves to characteristic flavors the terroir of where the orchid is grown also impacts the result The same orchid can be grown in two different regions resulting in different flavours based on growing conditions much like wine Recently vanilla costs have continued to rise and shortages are becoming a common occurrence There are several reasons for this One is that vanilla is very labour intensive to produce Vanilla is a large orchid that grows in tropical high humidity conditions It takes at least three years for the orchid to produce flowers Then as the flowers are pollinated it takes up to another nine months for the pollinated flower to produce a large enough bean pod The bean pod must then be cured for a further six to nine months before it is ready for market Most of the vanilla that is produced 80 of world supply is produced in Madagascar on small farms not on an industrial scale Despite this the vanilla orchid is not endemic to Madagascar it originates from South America namely Mexico It is thought that vanilla was farmed by early Meso Americans in its native range of South America pollinated by a bee that only exists alongside the vanilla orchid In the early 1800 s most of the vanilla was produced in Mexico Once a technique was created for hand pollination it was possible to cultivate vanilla outside of Mexico All vanilla that is produced in Madagascar Tahiti or elsewhere is pollinated by hand adding to cost of the product With the world market demanding more vanilla than can be produced the price is rising and is currently more an ounce than silver making way for vanilla alteratives Vanilla alternatives have long been used in kitchens and have their place when used correctly Vanilla flavoring that is man made is called vanillin which is the main compound that gives vanilla its recognizable flavor and aroma This type of vanilla is often said to be flat and lacks other flavors and depth that are contained in a vanilla bean as it contains not only vanillin but other molecules that contribute to its flavor Vanillin however is the strongest flavour compound in the bean and the hardest to destroy If you are wondering when you should use the vanilla bean and when it is ok to use vanilla alternatives think of it this way Vanilla flavoring should be used when making cookies or cakes because the high heat the cooking requires destroys the other flavoring molecules that exist in a vanilla bean but does not destroy the vanillin that exists in both real and synthetic vanilla What is lost in high heat cooking in relation to the vanilla bean are the other molecules that lend themselves to the depth of flavor past the vanillin flavor When making ice creams or custards where the cooking temperature is much lower the other flavoring molecules are spared and the depth of those flavor notes is present This summer look for these vanilla flavours to have more depth as dessert offerings cool down to combat the season s heat See you at the Club 10 SUMMER 2018

GROUNDSREPORT Jayson Griffiths Golf Course Superintendent jgriffiths londonhuntclub com Golf is both a sport and a game Unlike many sports golf is played for the most part without the supervision of a referee or umpire The game relies on the integrity of the individual foundational rules and expression of consideration to others Golf has withstood centuries of change evolving from a simple rock and stick to the feathery gutta percha Dunlop and the modern tightly wound high performance golf ball of today With this evolution of equipment came advancements in the mower Sheep were the first organized labourers prior to the Sythesman the invention of the carpet mower soon adapted to the fine clip of turf the replacement of horses with steel wheeled tractors to the robotic self propelled electric GPS guided robotic mowers of today As with technology the architecture of golf course design including the agronomic advancements of turfgrass science has had a profound effect on the day to day conditioning of the golf course Tournament preparations and T V coverage have advanced global participation where once there were few now many both amateur and professional male and female young and mature One ambassador of the game Greenskeepers truly admired and respected was the late Mr Arnold Palmer Mr Palmer was a true gentleman of the game who embraced the rules of the sport especially the fundamental principles of course care and player etiquette He was not only a great Champion but a steward of the golf course exemplified through his actions of leaving a golf course as well or better than he would find it As the son of a golf course superintendent Mr Palmer had first hand knowledge of the efforts put forth in presenting a golf course for daily play Golf is entertaining relaxing and challenging proper course stewardship is equally important Repairing divots raking bunkers and fixing ball marks correctly fits in with this philosophy and helps to maintain good course conditions for your fellow golfer USGA Rule 16 1 C The player may repair an old hole plug or damage to the putting green caused by the impact of a ball Repairing Ball Marks Start at the back of the mark at a 45 degree angle and push forward with the repairer Use repairer around all sides and slowly ease the turf towards the centre of the mark Lightly tap down with putter As a courtesy a ball mark repair tool and course stewardship card has been produced by LHCC Grounds and will be made available at the Starters Booth Bunker Raking As rules developed and stroke play became popular hazards became increasingly maintained Historical architect C B MacDonald was quoted to say If I had my way there would be a troupe of cavalry horses running through every trap and bunker on the course before a tournament started where only a Niblick could get the ball out and then but only after a few years I have seen several traps and bunkers that have afforded better lies and easier strokes than the fairway This of course is ridiculous Modern rules require before leaving a bunker a player shall carefully fill up and smooth over all holes and footprints made by them and any nearby made by others Divot Repair When faced with the challenge of a fairway divot the best action to take is placing the damaged piece of grass knocked out with the club and setting it back into the divot Place some sand mix along the edges of the divot and firm down with your shoe to secure Most importantly filling the divot whether by turf of sand is a courteousy to your fellow golfer who may need to play a shot from this repaired area In closing a thank you to all Members practicing course etiquette during these sometimes environmentally stressful months keep hydrated much like the grass plants stay cool drive down the centre of the fairways replace divots and repair ballmarks as a courteousy to your fellow Members Your combined efforts will only help contribute to the health and playability of the golf course over the coming weeks and months 17 SUMMER 2018

DISTANCEDEBATE Tim McKeiver Head Golf Professional tmckeiver londonhuntclub com Earlier this year the USGA and R A joint distance data was released Results showed a 3 yard increase over the last year for the world s major professional tours after years of essentially no distance gains Jack Nicklaus called for the golf ball to be rolled back 20 percent and the age long debate was on The distance argument can be summed up simply Anyone who hits a ball further than the opponent has an unfair advantage which needs to be curtailed Of course driving the ball great distances is a skill honed through years of practice resulting in longer hitters that are stronger and more athletic than us normal beings Through history the greatest players have often been the longest hitters Harry Vardon Bobby Jones Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods all dominated courses with their amassing length The paying public want to see Dustin Johnson and Rory McIroy hit 350 yard drives it makes us want to watch In short it sells Traditionalists believe we should continue to utilize older classic courses for major championships Rolling the ball back will assuage some egos and help a few clubs to host tournaments Additionally the cost of reasonably adding length via new back tees is comparatively inexpensive to other renovations such as rebuilding greens or improving bunkers Equipment manufacturers are against roll backs Better equipment has undoubtedly met the standard of doing the greatest good for the greatest number of golfers who want and need higher flying easier to hit golf balls and forgiving clubs to ease their golf struggles The number of courses becoming obsolete for professional tournament play is quite small while the number of golfers wanting more distance is exceedingly large Basing the distance debate on the top 25 to 50 longest hitters in the world skews the argument horribly While pros have influenced course design towards longer and harder courses 99 of courses don t need major changes to accommodate every day play Here at the London Hunt we are starting to see more Members move up Ten percent of our Men s League participants now play from the white tees over the standard blues Women s leagues and regular play is from the greens Why It s more playable and simply more fun Like many of you I look forward to seeing Shinnecock Hills Winged Foot Bethpage and Pinehurst host major championships The courses of the British Open are so much fun to watch In all cases these courses have added some length while for the most part respecting the original design concepts It is my opinion that the distance debate will sort itself out for the common good of the game Golf courses should not be one size fits all but rather playable for a wider variety of players The USGA and R A have committed vaguely to further discussion Hartley and Annabel son and daughter of Jeff and Becky Griffiths 18 SUMMER 2018

BORISBECKER Adam Baranowski Director of Tennis abaranowski londonhuntclub com Part 4 Having jumped at the chance to become Boris Becker s hitting partner I found myself on a plane to Monte Carlo one of many glamorous places I would visit over the next year I felt like Cinderella heading to the ball when we checked into a 5 star hotel only a few months after living in a tent with my Dad while I attended the Bollettieri Tennis Academy My first morning in Monte Carlo I had breakfast with Becker s coach Mike De Palmer We waited for Boris to pick us up and I remembered being 7 years old when my Dad showed me an article about 17 year old wonderkid Boris Becker winning Wimbledon that year As I sat and waited I got more and more nervous still not really believing I was about to go on court with him The first day was rough The second wasn t a whole lot better After a few sessions however I settled down and was hitting well As I became less concerned about hitting shots and keeping the ball in the court I started to observe exactly what it takes to be a professional tennis player And not just any pro but someone who reached 1 in the world Boris had an entourage with him constantly like a Formula One race car team There was a stringer racket technician There was a physical therapist There was an agent There was a body guard who spent most of his time with Boris wife Barbara and their son Noah And there was me a wide eyed hitting partner who was taking it all in Everyone on his team played a role to give Boris every advantage so he could perform at his peak level And they all understood that was why they were there get a massage and have his ankles taped One or two hours of training doesn t sound like a lot but when he stepped onto the court it was intense focused and purposeful Every drill had a goal Which isn t to say we didn t have fun on the court We certainly did and after a few weeks I was able to relax and enjoy it even more Like many great athletes Boris was competitive in everything he did He wanted it to always mean something Whether it was shooting hoops or playing soccer he was always playing for something I think people are born with that ultracompetitive trait If you don t have it I don t think you can develop it When the session was over there was virtually no talk of tennis He left it on the court and lived the rest of his life off court I learned each day was about the moment we were in After about a year of travelling around the world and going to countless tournaments with Boris I decided to move on I wanted to go to university and play tennis to see how close I could come to the level of tennis I had witnessed that year I received a full scholarship at Texas Tech University and said goodbye to Boris and his entourage I was excited to start university and play on the tennis team but leaving Boris was bittersweet I m happy to say we kept in touch over the years I still consider him a friend and cherish the memories I made the year I spent with him Each day we practised for no more than two hours The schedule changed according to how Boris felt about his game Before each session he would 21 SUMMER 2018

BEFIT BEHAPPY Alicia Clow Ennis Fitness Professional fitnesspro londonhuntclub com Everyone knows that exercise is good for you it keeps your weight in check keeps you feeling youthful and keeps us active as we age Go a step further though and think about how good you have felt after a good workout whether it be in the gym on the course or at the courts You may not always be happy with your score but you physically feel good and in turn can feel really happy When you stay active on a regular basis it is not a coincidence that you feel less stressed less anxious and generally happier Here are some reasons IT RELEASES HAPPY CHEMICALS IN THE BRAIN Dopamine is a chemical in the brain that is necessary for feelings of pleasure and happiness As we age we lose some of the chemical so we need to create experiences to release it The best way Exercise IT MAKES YOU FEEL LESS STRESSED Physical activity helps to relax the muscles and relieve tension in the body Since the body and mind are so closely linked when your body feels better so too will your mind Not only will exercise ease stress in the moment but it will also lower stress in the long term By putting our bodies through a low level of stress by raising our heart rate we are training our bodies to get better at handling the other stressors that occur in life IT GIVES YOU ENERGY We have all heard someone say that the hardest part of a workout is just getting to the gym but we have rarely seen someone regret it once it is done Think of exercise like filling up the gas tank of energy You will be able to move through your day easier by feeling energized which equals happier IT BUILDS SELF CONFIDENCE When you start to exercise and see physical transformations take place you simply feel better Not only will it change how you look but it will make you stronger and more independent Gaining confidence will bring greater happiness IT EASES ANXIETY Exercise enhances well being through the release of endorphins another chemical that contributes to happiness Try to focus on what your body is doing and in bringing your focus to the activity you can stop the flow of constant worries running through your head Recent studies show that a good workout will not only boost your mood immediately but will also give you long term relief Especially in high intensity type training IT FIGHTS INSOMNIA Studies have shown that regular physical activity often improves sleep problems Not only will your sleep be better but you will have energy to get out of bed and take on the day Happiness So if you are feeling anxious stressed down or the weather just isn t letting you get your golf or tennis game in take the drive to the club and use the fitness center to build up those happy chemicals I guarantee you won t regret it 22 SUMMER 2018
