the Annual General Meeting I said that each time Britta and I drive through the gates of the London Hunt and Country Club we are reminded of how truly fortunate we are This has never been truer than this spring We have golf tennis trap and hunt facilities that are the envy of Clubs throughout Canada we are about to complete a major renovation to our magnificent Clubhouse which will give us state of the art fitness facilities a new Pro Shop an indoor practice area new locker rooms enhanced Member and event dining space and a spectacular new outdoor patio area and more importantly the Club is where our most important and enduring friendships are The Club is for us and I hope for you a core part of our recreational and social life This is the second edition of Club Life Magazine a continuation of our efforts to inform the Membership of activities at the Club through a variety of media in an interesting and visually appealing manner which reflects the high standards of the Club If you have suggestions for improvements please pass those on to any member of Management or the Board Club information is also available on the website in the weekly eNews bulletins on the golf course blog and Twitter feeds as well as posters in the Clubhouse We have had an exceptional start to the 2015 season The golf course wintered well thanks to the huge effort made by Jayson and his crew throughout the winter and into the spring cleanup Damage was less than 2 of the greens area and largely confined to 4 the 6 and 11 greens the result of an unfortunate intrusion of walkers cross country skiers over those greens in early spring a matter which will be dealt with in future winters by fencing signage The 1st Tee Realignment and the 9th Green Project are complete and the 9th green will provide a wonderful vista from the new outdoor terrace The second year of the Tree Management Program has resulted in beautiful new views between holes 10 and 12 Registrations for the Men s and Women s Opening Days and golf leagues set new records The Men s Member Member golf tournament was sold out The tennis section saw record attendance at its opening functions and a significant increase in court usage The April Opening Cocktail Party saw more than 400 Members squeeze into the Member s side of the Clubhouse for superb food stations and a wonderful selection of wines The Earth Hour Dinner the Easter Brunch and all other Member events have seen very strong attendance AND we are weeks away from occupying the Member s side of our newly renovated Clubhouse As one Member said to me recently there is a real vibe in the Club these days and I think he s right Membership which as predicted suffered somewhat from new Members being reluctant to join during the construction phase has made a very strong comeback and we have now welcomed nine new Member families into the Club in 2015 with a number of other applications in process The Membership Committee is working on plans to ensure that we continue to be SUMMER 2015 attractive to potential new Members going forward For those of you with friends who are thinking about joining the Club in the future the message is clear if they want to become full Members rather than Veranda Members the time to act is now We do expect a full Membership before the end of this calendar year As I think you are all aware we will be implementing a new dress code for the Club on a trial basis commencing July 1 The new dress code is intended to reflect the desire of an increasing number of Members to dine in designated areas of the Club in more casual dress including dress jeans while maintaining more traditional standards of dress in other areas of the Club and at Club functions You will find the new dress code in this issue of Club Life Magazine on page 28 The dress code will also be communicated to Members on the Club website by email and in print The Board has approved the new dress code and has also asked the Club staff to ensure that the dress code is enforced We would ask that all Members and their guests become familiar with and adhere to the new dress code requirements and be conscious of the traditions of the Club and the enjoyment of the Club by other Members when it comes to appropriate dress General Manager and Chief Operating Officer Jon Nusink Jon has been with us for just over one year and he has made a significant difference through what was a very challenging past year Obviously we are not the only ones to realize Jon s contributions as Jon was recently awarded the 2014 Score Golf Magazine s Club Manager of the Year Award He was nominated by the Canadian Society of Club Managers for his successes at the Club last year as well as his work in support of the Club management industry and the community Please take a moment when you next see Jon and offer your congratulations Jon is ably assisted by a great group of Managers and Service Staff There is nothing more rewarding to these people than a thank you from a Member for a job well done and I would encourage you to do so Thank you for a great start to 2015 Let s make it a record year It is your Club use it support it take pride in it I am always reminded that our experience at the Club as Members would not be at the standard we expect without the hard work and dedication of our Management and Staff That team is led by our Club 5 IN MEMORIAM IN MEMORIAM ED ERVASTI ED ERVASTI Remembering Ed Ervasti s passion for golf the Hunt Club and lifelong friendships on and off the links Remembering Ed Ervasti and his passion for golf the Hunt Club and lifelong friendships on the links We were at the Lookout Point Senior and 95 year old Ed had been quiet all morning My foursome had never met him so immediately after dinner I led them to his table only to nd it was empty Ed was prone on his back with his table mates staring One of them Dr Glenn Kiefer nodded to me with a little grin Ed had been down for over a minute but rallied got back into his chair and immediately forked into his lemon meringue pie Glenn said I think he is just exhausted nodded off and fell over But get him out of here quickly they ve gone to call an ambulance Jimmy P got the car and we left as the ambulance was arriving A little embarrassed the normally garrulous Ed apologized to us saying Sorry guys that really would have inconvenienced you Now if I die on the way home just drop me off at any cemetery they ll know what to do Upon our return to London I asked if he needed help getting into his house No he responded but call me in the morning If I answer I m ne If not I ll be playing with your Dad and Sandy Both deceased John Nash Golf is a wonderful game especially when it produces such engaging personalities as Ed Ervasti When Ed rst came to London I soon heard what a great player he was When I was invited to Sunningdale to play with him I was thrilled All the way around the course he kept telling me what a good player I was On the par 3 16th hole of the course I made a birdie Oh what a wonderful player I was Ed remarked again When we nished I was 74 a good score for me at Sunningdale Ed shot 70 so I paid him 2 00 The story of Ed Ervasti is one celebrated by golfers writers and sports enthusiasts alike It has been written and re written for years and it should be His successes and love for the game were more than extraordinary they were truly inspirational As we remember our dear friend mentor and fellow Member of over 50 years we think the best story to tell hasn t been told by ScoreGolf or the Free Press it is the personal story told by you In 1971 I was playing with Ed his son John and my father at the Islington golf course The 10th hole is a long par 3 Three of us hit our tee shots and Ed was surveying the situation A few members were watching so he asked them how far it was to the hole One replied that it was 231 yards Ed took out his driver and hit it up on to the green and the ball just made it to the hole and fell in Ed turned around and said to the member that he was right as he could only hit his driver 231 yards Ed walked away smiling as the members just stood in amazement David Nash I was fortunate enough to play with Ed every Saturday morning for a number of years Jim Perivolaris myself and an invited 4th made up the group There was always a lineup of guys wanting to play as the 4th and I am sure it wasn t Jim and I that were the main attraction The trip I remember most was with him to Dearborn Michigan to attempt to qualify for the American Senior Amateur On our way over he directed me to drive through Detroit in an area that you really needed an armed guard riding shotgun He wanted to show me a building where he went with the money he got from his discharge from the army I think it was 700 or 800 He told me he went up there to gamble and lost all his money in about an hour and that in his younger days he loved to gamble both on and off the golf course I think marriage and fatherhood put an end to that On the way home we were searched at the border and I was caught with too much to declare Ed had just as much as I did but they didn t bother to even ask him if he had anything must have been his smooth talking One of the many memories I have of him Peter Menzies 6 SUMMER 2015 Later after a couple of years working back in the United States Ed returned to London and joined the Hunt Club I was to enjoy many rounds with him Of course he added to his amazing record He had won the Michigan Amateur Championship defeating outstanding players Detroit was a hotbed of great golfers amateur and professional He had learned his game playing competitive golf in high school in Detroit The list of Ed s tournament wins is long perhaps several hundred events He won the Royal Canadian Golf Association Championship the Ontario Seniors Amateur Championship the Canadian Seniors Golf Association Championship and numerous tournaments in the United States and Canada Here in London he won the Hunt Club Senior Invitational an unbelievable 17 times which regularly attracts the best players from Ontario and elsewhere Much is made of Ed shooting or beating his age I suppose he did so thousands of times He rst did it when he was 65 shooting a 65 Indeed I played with him when he shot 65 at the Hunt Club I still have the scorecard 32 33 Ed wasn t as long a driver as many of his competitors so he concentrated on the short game He was a wizard with his wedge and an outstanding bunker player At a time when the best bunker players got up and down 60 of the time Ed did it 80 all of the time I saw him do it He always kept his composure and was good at making the shots needed to win He was an excellent putter of course I would describe him as being a dead weight putter the ball would go to the hole and topple in front back or sideways The only weakness in his game I can think of was missing a short putt occasionally when he didn t hit the ball hard enough When Ed had a putt only a couple of feet long Jack Nash used to say Don t give it to him Good golf often runs in families One year at the Club Ed s lovely wife Jane won the Ladies Championship his son John the Men s Championship and Ed the Senior Men s Championship It was always a pleasure to play with Ed He entertained his companions with a lot of sayings If he had bad luck he might have said Golf is a cruel game If one putted away past the hole he would perhaps say Nothing goes faster than a ball past the hole If one was lucky a favourite remark was Even a blind pig may nd an acorn He also said Every day you play golf adds a day to your life Ed made friends wherever he went and all of us will miss him greatly Emerson Creed 7 SUMMER 2015
