A STORY ABOUT STORIESStories are everywhere. I still remember the stories my mother used to read to me in bed when I was a very young child. Story time just before sleep was a daily custom in our family. This inspired in me a love of stories long before I could read myself. Moreover, this ‘reading ritual’ helped me to learn to read. Listening to a favourite story, night after night, and following the words and the pictures as my mother turned the pages, I began to make sense of those squiggles on the page – the letters, words and punctuation marks that make up the written story. This ‘acquisition of reading’ worked so well, that it wasn’t long before a time came that, when my mother was sleepy and misread a word or two, I would correct her to get the story back on track.I recall, too, those classic stories I read to myself when I had mastered the art of reading: The Ugly Duckling, The Pied Piper of Hamelin, The Railway Children, The Secret Garden, The Prince and the Pauper. What exactly makes a book into a classic, I hear you ask? Well, it’s a story that has stood the test of time, so the twists and turns of the plot are guaranteed to grip the reader. And there are the fabulous larger-than-life characters, too: people like King Arthur, Alice, Kay and Gerda, Long John Silver, Black Beauty, Ebenezer Scrooge, Phileas Fogg, and Eliza Doolittle.Imagine what a pleasure it was for me, then, when I first encountered Emily Stunt’s lively, fresh and playful retellings of these famous stories which now make up Visible Press’s graded reader series Classic Story Readers! I confess that I fell in love with them at first sight. Talking of ‘love at first sight’ reminds me of the stories I read aloud to my children when they were young. We would browse the local bookshop or library together and choose stories to buy or borrow that caught our eyes, new versions of classics I had loved when I was a kid. Stories like Aesop’s Fables, Greek Legends like King Midas and the Golden Touch, The Little Toy Soldier, The Little Match Girl, and The Selfish Giant spring to mind. The illustrations in stories for young readers are incredibly important, and I am delighted to say that the artists who have worked on the Classic Story Readers have created gorgeous pictures that complement these wonderful stories beautifully. They are a veritable feast for the eye! Just as a tastefully presented dish awakens the hunger of the restaurant diner, these mouthwatering illustrations will, I am sure, give the would-be reader a foretaste of the delicious story that comes alongside them, calling out to be read. Bill Bowler, May 20204
Of course, with my teacher’s hat on, I should add that our Classic Story Readers are designed to be used for language learning. The blurb on the back cover has a clear teaching purpose, to get the child curious and keen to dive into the story. The Before Reading activities inside the book (focusing on the author, the story characters, the background to the story, and the vocabulary of the story) support and prepare learners to go on the story journey. The glosses on the story pages, whether in pictures or in words, scaffold the reading experience and keep the young reader going, without the need to leave the world of the story to check new words in a dictionary. The After Reading activities review and reinforce key story vocabulary, check comprehension of main story points, and give learners a chance to respond to the story in spoken or written form, making the most of the extensive reading experience. And that’s not to mention the extra support materials that accompany the printed books: the chapter-by-chapter audio recordings that dramatize each story and bring it alive, the e-book version that brings these classics into the digital world of 21st century classrooms and online learning at home, the accompanying worksheets and exams which will save on teacher preparation time.Anyway, that’s enough from me. Thanks for reading the story of my lifelong interest in stories. Now, it’s time for the Classic Story Readers to speak for themselves!
