THE THIRD BIRTHDAY (1965-1966) And here commenced a memorable year. It was not just because of the achievements of the "City of Perth" Club, that this year was a mile -stone in Lionism. As the genesis of all expansion in Lionism in the State of Western Australia, "City of Perth" personally took pride in the year of the first Regional Convention, at which official confirmation paved the way to the formation of W .A. 's own DistricL After his six months as Acting President of the Club in 1964-65, Lion Robert Levins on had both the privilege and task of filling the role of President for a further twelve months. The Club Officers had been e le c te d as f o 11 ow s : President lst. Vice President 2nd. Vice President 3rd. This Club took pride in the establishment of the following Lions Clubs during 19 65-66. "North Perth" formed l 9th October 1965, chartered 4th December 1965 Geraldton formed 8th December 1965, chartered l 5th January 1965 Perth Eastern formed 5th May 1965, chartered 6th October 1966 City of Perth members were called upon for their assistance in bringing these Clubs right from the inaugural stage to eventual Charter. It was one of 11Perth's" members, Malcolm Levinson, ably supported by Lions Ron Douglas and Bob Smyth who convened the inaugural meet-ings both at Geraldton and Carnarvon to establish the first two Lions Clubs in the North of Western Australia. Lions Club of City of Perth shares reflected value in the establishment of other Lions Clubs by its progeny. They were as follows : Sponsor New Club Formation : Charter Melville Flore at 3rd. With the exceptions of the Lions Club of South Perth, chartered by Ex.tension Chairman Lion Joe Mason, the Lions Club of Osborne by Zone Chairman Ken Scampton, and of the Clubs of the far North, most other Charter Certificates were presented by District Governor John Le Cornu, who was later to manage the Re.gion 3 Convention. City of Perth took pride in the outstanding con-tribution of Lion Joe Mason, who in company with Australian Secretary Jim McLardie, visited the far North to officially form the Clubs of Carnarvon, Port Hedland, Derby, Wyndham and Kununurra. When the time came for these Northern Clubs to be chartered, it was Deputy District Governor Alan Dodd (acting on behalf of District Governor John Le Cornu) who eventually presented the Charter Certificates. Accomp-anying him in this venture, and giving of their valuable time were the late Lion Ken Regan and Lions Ken Scampton, Jim Richards and Lloyd Marchesi. CONTINUATION OF REGION 3 At the request of District Governor John Le Cornu, the same Lions who acted as District Officers of Region 3 during the previous six months, were re-appointed for the year 1965-66. The "Perth" members included in these were Deputy District Governor Alan Dodd, Ex.tension Chairman Lion Joe Mason, Secretary Lion Ian Forbes and Zone Chair-man (Zone 1) Lion Malcolm Levinson. Apart from the normal respons-ibilities pertaining to their offices, the Regional Officers devoted tremendous time and effort to the necessary preliminary ex.tens ion work, for the establishment of sufficient Clubs to warrant W .A. 1s own District. Conspicuous among these was Ex.tension Chairman Lion Joe Mason, later to be acknowledged for his outstanding service .. 1 7.

11INTERNATIONAL11 HONOURED CITY OF PERTH LION The unparallelled efforts of Lion Joe Mason right from the inaugural meeting of the Perth Club in promoting ex.tensions of Lionism, and in particular his drive both in leadership and personal effort, to establish-ing sufficient Clubs first for the formation of a Region, and later a District, were eventually recognised by Lions International. There were of course many others who did great work in this regard, including Lion Tom Cameron, later to be elected a District Governor. But be-cause of Lion Joe Mason's personal effort, in having a finger in the pie in almost every one of the first 30 clubs, Lions International saw fit to pre sent him as the 32nd. person in the world, with the Supreme Ex.tens -ion Award. WORLD PRESIDENT· Lions Club of City of Perth shared in the privilege of welcoming the second of the World Presidents to visit W .A. -Dr. Walter Campbell. Again as with Claude de Vorss, Lions felt proud of their world leader to whom "City of Perth11 as part of 800, OOO Lions showed allegiance. REGIONAL CONVENTION Officially this Convention held at the Cottesloe Civic Centre, was perhaps the turning point in Lionism in Western Australia. Proud we were that District Governor John Le Cornu granted approval for one of 1'Perth11 Club's direct sponsorships -that of the Lions Club of Victoria _Park, to be the Host Club for the first and only Convention of Region 3, 201 J. Apart from attracting Lions and their ladies from far and wide, and apart from the value of the educational forums, the business of Convent-ion included both the election of Host Club for the lst. District Convent-ion (201L), and the election of the first District Governor for the year 1966-67. The Host Club of "Victoria Park11 deserved hearty congrat-ulations for running an excellent Convention, which.proved a pattern for future District Conventions, hosted by "City of Perth11 in 1967 and by Ge raldton in 19 68. OPENING CEREMONY The opening of Region 3 Convention was carried out with dignity by His Excellency, Major General Sir Douglas Kendrew, KCMG, CB, CBE, DSO. Following on from the introduction Deputy District Governor Alan Dodd took the chair, and very ably controlled the business of Con-vention. 18.

Other notable guests were District Governor John Le Cornu, Cabinet Secretary (201 J) Geoff Laird, Council Chairman Jamie Jamieson and Australian Secretary Jim McLardie and their respective wives. In competition to City of Perth who sponsored Zone Chairman Malcolm Levinson for District Governor, the "Fremantle11 Club sponsored Zone Chairman Ken Scampton. Results of the elections at this Region Convention we re as follows : (a) Host Club for lst. District Convention 201L (1967) -Lions Club of City of Perth. (b) Election of lst. District Governor Elect -Zone Chairman Malcolm Levins on. Following shortly on this Convention, saw the departure of the District Governor Elect and his wife Lion's Lady Diana for New York to the 49th International Convention. At this worldwide gathering of be-tween 30, OOO and 40, OOO Lions, our first District Governor Elect had the privilege of attending the District Governors 1 Conference {or school) followed by his actual induction as District Governor by the World President Edward M. Lindsey,, OPENING OF OPPORTUNITY DEN Early in June 1966 saw the opening of the Lions Opportunity Den, a continuous project which has seen no equal in Western Australia. Hard work by the Lions in renovation of the premises and collecting of un-wanted articles for stock, and enthusiastic work by the Lions' Ladies in preparing merchandise for sale, led to the "Overture" of what is today known all over Australia as a great Lions project. The steady and regular income from this project has gone on, vvhen at times other Club projects were temporarily in the doldrums; and it must be ad-mitted in all fairness to the Lions' Ladies, that they have put their husbands on their toes~ It is sincerely hoped that despite their com-mendable work, this will not be a forerunner to getting their husbands from their toes on to their bended knees. CREDIT TO A SILENT WORKER Apart from assistance to her father, Lion Waily Hughes, who very efficiently carried out the responsible duties of Club Secretary, a silent worker in his daughter Marilyn Hughes, was of great assistance to ''City of Perth" Club. The secretarial work carried out by her was not only voluntary, but highly efficient, and done with a promptness not expected of any commercial organisation. The Club records will always 19.

Page 8

describe Marilyn Hughes as an esteemed and youthful Lion's Lady. And here with a fine year1s Club effort, coupled with the election of City of Perth Club as Host for this first District Convention, and election of the first District Governor Elect from its ranks, the curtain falls on the 4th year of Lions Club of City of Perth. 20.

This was a year of great happenings in Lionism in mo.st of which the Lions Club of City of Perth participated. Such occurrences as the presentation of the Mobile Glaucoma Testing Unit, the 1, OOO, OOO entry Peace Essay, and the first Goodwill Week, had made history. And then the hosting of the first District Convention by "City of Perth", the appointment of one of its members as International Representative, and another as the first District Governor of 201L. In the environs of the South Perth Centre, this Convention had the honour of being opened by a past leader 798o of the allied Service Movement -Apex -in the person of the Senior 87-9.2 Puisne Judge Sir Lawrence Jackson. Their Worships the Mayors of South Perth and Geraldton were amongst the distinguished guests of honour. Lions and their ladies, coming from far and wide, elicited the highest possible spirit of fell_owship. Great enthusiasm was displayed at the educational forum, which was conducted on the lines of the District Governors' Conference at the New York International Convent-ion. Highlights of the business of convention were : (1) Election of "Geraldton" as the Host Club for the second 201L District Convention in 1968, and (2) Election (unopposed) of Lion Ken Scampton as District Governor Elect for District 201L (1967-68) 22.

FATHER AND SONS' NIGHT Family interest and respect for Lionism, were displayed by an ex-cellent attendance of "sons'' at 11City of Perth1s11 first Father and Sons' Night. The interesting guest-speaker on this occasion was Commander g~ Marks. Amongst those present was Sandover Medalist, Mr .. Billie Walker, who was the target of a panel's interrogation delivered by President Vic 1 s nephew, Neal Garland. "GIVE WAY TO THE RIGHT" PROJECT In the field of Community Betterment, the Lions Club of City of Perth, assisted by the Mobil Oil Co., staged a project, which accord-ing to the Commissioner of Police, saved many lives on the road. After much planning and the achievement of co-operation from various civic bodies, and led by Lion Colin Masel, the "Club" chose as its proje et the implementation of the traffic law -"Give way to the right". Contentious as was this project, the fact that the law still stands, is evidence that the Club assisted Community Betterment. In just another way this enhanced the already fine image of Lions International. As for the lives saved, these were but a minute part of the total value of the project. Its greatest achievement, was the training of motorists ever-more to adhere to this rule of safety. This original project was held in sufficiently high esteem by the Multiple District 201, that it received pride of place in a publication of the Australian Lion magazine. PRESENTATION TO FOUNDATION FOR PREVENTION OF BLINDNESS By dint of hard work by the Lions 1 Ladies in sorting and selling un-attractive second-hand wares to unfortunate but deserving citizens, "City oi Perth" Club carried out a continuous project yielding twofold results (1) At the Opportunity Den, merchandise at almost give-away prices helped make life possible for those less fortunate than ourselves. (2) At the same time, with low overhead costs and free labour by the members of the Ladies 1 Auxiliary, steadily but surely many thousands of dollars were earned. The time came that the Mobile Glaucoma Clinic could be placed on order -something which has since made history in Australia. Because other Lions Clubs had also raised money to be handed to the District Save-Sight Committee, City of Perth was pleased to agree, that its presentation could be incorporated as a highlight in the District 2 3, 8/ B~

he appointed Lions Wally Hughes as Cabinet Secretary, Allyn Bryant as Cabinet Treasurer, and Neal Durack as Deputy District Governor of Region 1 . Hence the Lions Club of City of Perth, apart from its own contribution to District Officers, deserved great commendation. Both Wally Hughes and Allyn Bryant, with no predecessors to follow, had to pave the way in establishing District Administration, which they did so admirably, that their efforts were re warded by the presentation of lOOo/o Cabinet Treasurer and Secretary Awards, and a personal presentation to Wally Hughes of a Plaque from the District Governor. Neal Durack, with a difficult Region, ·including the Clubs of the far North, ably carried responsibility of half the Clubs in the District, at a time when some were so recently formed as to be anything but sub-stantial. His receipt of an 100% Deputy District Governor's Award was well earned. Apart from the general administration of the District, including District Governor's official visits to each Club to many of which he was accompanied by the Cabinet Secretary, Wally Hughes, ''City of Perth11 participated in the many District Activities, including the World Peace Essay, the Cracker Carnival, Goodwill Week, and the Save Sight Presentation. INTERNATIONAL HONOURS A "CITY OF PERTH11 LION Except in the case of Australian Secretary, A . J . McLardie, "City of Perth" was honoured by being the only Club in the whole of Australia from which 11International11 selected an Official Representative. The Club was indeed proud, when in January 1966, Lion Joe Mason, prev-iously Extension Chairman for Region 3 of District 201J, was appointed International Representative by Lions International. This so widened the field of his responsibilities that he had to go wherever required within the whole continent of Australia. This appointment also lead to the honour and responsibility of attending meetings of the Australian Council ci. District Governors, and attending National Conventions. Fortunate it was, under these circumstances, that especially during the first year of District 201L, 11International11 saw fit to make it possible for most of his time to be spent in W.A. The demands upon Lion Joe' s time have been so great, that 11City of Perth1' is proud too of the contribution indirectly made by his dedicated wife, Lion's Lady Sylvia. 11City of Perth1' is also conscious of Lion Joe' s help to the new District, coupled with his suprerne effort to retain a record of good attendance and participation in his own Club. The close of this fiscal year, one of the most eventful in the history of Lionism in W .A. was celebrated at the Installation Ceremony, at 2 5.

DISTRICT 201L It was in this year 1967-68 that District Governor Ken Scampton had the honour of leading District 201 L. "City of Perth" supported the District in many and varied ways, including Save-Sight, Youth of the Year, Christmas Cake Sales, and the Cracker Carnival. Lions Club of City of Perth contributed to the administration of the District by no less than three District Officers. Cabinet included Past D . D .G. Neal Durack as Chairman of District Membership Development and Retent-ion, and P.D.G. Malcolm Levinson as District Chairman of Internat-ional Relations. Conspicuous by his outstanding contribution was Past Cab. /Sec. Wally Hughes, who over and above his office as lst. Vice President, not only filled the .role of Acting President on many occasions, but what is more served the District as an outstanding Zone Chairman of Zone 4 . His contributions to District were frequently outside'his Zone, in such special activities as Installation Officer, even as far distant as Geraldton. 11City of Perth" appreciated the gesture by District Governor Ken Scampton, that in giving priority only to his own Club of ''Fremantle 11, he chose as his second official visit the Lions Club of City of Perth. ACTIVITIES Amongst the projects carried out in this year were : Collections for Opportunity Den approx, Glaucoma Testing for Members and Ladies City of Perth Glaucoma Test at Council House (8 50 tests) Hosting of Miss Sarawak (schedule of entertainment by "I. 244 PERSONS MAY HAVE ESCAPED BLINDNESS True it is that the Mobile Glaucoma Clinic is now the property of the Foundation for the Prevention of Blindness. True it is too that mem-bers of other Lions Clubs have taken their turn in manning the key positions controlling the public at the Free Glaucoma Screenings. But it is an indisputable fact that were it not for "City of Perth 's 11 com-pleted project, of planning, financing and producing this Mobile Clinic, this invaluable contribution to public health may not have occurred. 11City of Perth" members will forever take pride in the results achieved by the Mobile Clinic. From its inception to this day, 23, 073 persons have been tested for this dreaded eye disease. And of these 244 positive cases have been revealed, any of which may have. otherwise ended with either partial or total blindness. GREAT CITIZEN BECOMES A LION No greater honour could come to the Club or to the District, than the acceptance of Honorary Membership by the Governor of Western Australia. His association with Lionism, in opening the Regional 201J Convention, and later participating in the presentation of the Mobile Glaucoma Clinic to the Foundation for the Prevention of Blind-ness, were part of the cause of his admiration for Lionism. In the presence of lOOo/o physical attendance of Lions Club of City of Perth, and with the patronage of District Governor Ken Scampton and many District Officers, this representative of Her Majesty the Queen, sponsored as a member by P . D . G . Malcolm Levinson, was with due decorum, inducted as an honorary member of City of Perth. This important ceremony which would obviously have been a strain upon any man, was carried out with such unassuming confidence, dignity and respect, that this induction by lst. Vice President Wally Hughes (acting as President), will forever remain in the memories of those present~ A fitting mes sage of congratulations and welcome was sent by Lions International to His Excellency the Governor of Western Australia, Major General Sir Douglas Kendrew, KCMG, CB, CBE, DSO. CONVENTION This year marked the occasion of the second District Convention (201L), hosted by a Club originally sponsored by "City of Perth". Lions were indeed proud of 11Geraldton11, for the competent hosting of this important milestone in Western Australian Lionism. Great hospitality and warmest possible fellowship were keynotes in the event. "City of Perth" was well represented with delegates, and was 29.

Page 18

indeed proud of the contribution by 1 st. Vice President Wally Hughes, District Membership Chairman Neal Durack and International Rep-resentative Joe Mason, who all three displayed ability and dedication in their participation in the educational forum. Worthy of congrat-ulations was "Morley's" election as Host Club for the third District Convention, and the election unopposed of Lion Tom Cameron (District Extension Chairman), as District Governor Elect for the year 1968-69. To the incoming District Governor Lions Club of City of Perth offerred Lion Tom Cameron their allegiance and enthusiastic support. A SINCERE THANKYOU TO THE PRESIDENT As with several of his predecessors, President Des. Wooding proved to be a very dedicated leader. Frequent business trips to Kalgoorlie, followed by a change in his voeation caused unavoidable absences at certain meetings. On almost every required occasion, and sometimes with little warning, 1 st. Vice President Wally Hughes filled the role of Acting President. Along with his duties as a Zone Chairman, this was a marathon effort. The election of Lion Wally as President Elect for the following year, was some indication of the Club' s appreciation of his outstanding effort. Here was an example of ideal co-operation between the lst. Vice President and President Des. Wooding, whose inspired efforts under these difficult circumstances earned him an 1 OOo/o President's Award. And so the curtain fell on "City of Perth 1s11 sixth year of Lionism, and a hearty thankyou to their leader President Des. Wooding. 30.

Also on this occasion, Past District Governor Malcolm Levinson had the honour of presenting Melvin Jones Membership Plaques from Lions International. These were awarded to both District Governor Ken and Vice President Neal Durack for their conspicuous District duties in the previous year as Deputy District Governor and Member-ship Development Chairman respectively. IT WAS AN ANZAC MEETING This Installation Meeting being scheduled on the evening of Anzac Day, was appropriately honoured by the presence of Bishop Riley, who as Guest Speaker on his wartime experiences, commanded the attention of all members. 4th JULY DINNER DANCE Honoured by· the distinguished company of the Consul for United States, members and their wives supported a memorable social even-ing in the form of a Dinner Dance. The Consul responded to the President's expressions of welcome and assured us of appreciation of the bond between our two countries. POLICY BY PRESIDENT Members were -enthused by the policy outlined by their new Presi-dent Wally. Great emphasis was laid on planning of Committees, to see that they functioned, and thereby spread the load of responsibility. The President also forecast that membership should be given a blood transfusion, not just during October {Membership Month) but as a continuing drive for the year. YOUTH OF THE YEAR This renowned national project planned with the blessing of the Australian Council, was well supported by City of Perth Club. At the Club judging, 10 youths were examined, and first, second and third prizes awarded. At a later date City of Perth was well represented at the District Judging both in the audience and on the Judging Panel, which included the Lord Mayor Tom Wardle and P . D .G. Malcolm Levinson. RETURN OF DISTRICT GOVERNOR In the early hours of the morning, a large reception awaited the arrival of District Governor Tom and Lion's Lady Connie Cameron at 32 .

the Perth Airport. Included in those Lions and ladies who made this warm gesture to ''201 L' s" District Governor upon his re turn from the International Convention in Dallas, U.S.A., were several represent-atives of "City of Perth". GLAUCOMA TESTING AT 2-YEAR-OLD TRIALS Once again a commendable response by Club members resulted in a successful 2-pronged project. ·Whilst the two-year-old trials were 7-:-run at Belmont Race Course, resulting in a profit of $409 from sale of programmes, the Glaucoma Mobile Testing Unit was put into action at the racecourse. As previously the Club was particularly indebted to Lion Allan Schaill for his organisation of this project. PERTH CONTRIBUTES TO DISTRICT As in the past, "City of Perth" was well represented on the Cabinet of District 201L. The following ''Perth" Lions were appointed by District Governor Tom Cameron .. President Wally Hughes -Liaison Officer for 3rd. District Convention Lion Colin Masel -District Road Safety Lion Robert Levinson -District Membership Development and Retent-. ion Lion Malcolm Levinson -District Chairman for Information, Constit-ution and Convention Lion Joe Mason -the Ex-Officio Representative for Lions International CHANGE OF SECRETARY After such an excellent and inspired effort as Secretary in the previous year, and after having been re-elected to this responsible position, Lion Tom Wigzell, reluctantly resigned this position. 111-health caused Lion Tom, on his doctor 1 s advice to give up this arduous duty. Without adequate warning to plan for this change, 2nd .. Vice President Don Levy came to the rescue and on top of his Vice Presi-dential dt1ties, Lion Don acted as Secretary for some considerable time. Finally a rec.ently transferred member, Lyn. Bennett from Lions Club of Albany, accepted the position of Secretary for the rest of the year. The Club is grateful to all parties concerned, and very happy at the fact that Lion Tom Wigzell has made a good enough recov-ery to again be a regular attendant. 33.

MEMBERSHIP DRIVE Without lacking respect for the good hard core of long standing members, President Wally had the full backing of the Board of Direct-ors to plan a membership drive. It was agreed that a central city club should represent most of the important vocations, and that a trans-fusion of new blood would ultimate.ly still further lift the efficiency of the Club .. With Chairmanship of the Membership Committee by Immediate Past President Des. Wooding, and guidance and help from International Representative Joe Mason a highly successful membership drive came to fruition in the month of October. This was only the fore-runner to future drives, which cannot but assist the Club. INDOCTRINATION OF NEW MEMBERS Upon the request of President Wally, a Lions Information Committee comprised of International Representative Joe Mason, Past President Stan Webster and P .D.G. Malcolm Levinson, was given a major assignment. Various Information Sessions have taken place, at which not only the Committee but also the sponsors of new members have participated. The function of this Committee has been used as part of the format for the District Information Committee. "Perth11 can there-fore take pride in having indirectly ass is te d the dissemination of Lions Information throughout the District. TWINS, TRIPLETS, BUT WHAT OF 1111"? At a Ladies 1 Night, President Wally chose to induct no less than 11 new Lions. This was the result of the successful Membership Drives, and the ladies will no doubt record it as the record multiple birth of Lion Cubs. It was fitting that at this record multiple birth, District Governor Tom Cameron was not only present, but participated in the proceedings. OPPORTUNITY DEN Our ladies again deserve great credit for their untiring efforts in the unglamorous and somewhat depressing duties of staffing the Lions Opportunity Den. The men responded well in their drives for stock, only to make more work for the ladies in sorting, pr1c1ng and selling these wares. Results have been so successful that, apart from contributing to 34.

Lion's Service Fund, the ladies have been responsible for certain special donations. Conspicuous amongst these has been a donation to Mentally Retarded Children -$1300; a sewing machine; and a Traymobile and $50 worth of linen to the Nulsen Haven Home for Slow Learners; and a refriger-ator and walking frames for disabled children. GIVING OF OURSELVES TO A PARAPLEGIC Contrasting to the usual fund raising projects, was response by members of 11Perth11 Club to give of ourselves in time, by bringing brightness to Rhonda Charters. The Lions Club of Atherton solicited our humane response to their request that we visit a young lady who had been brought from Queensland to Perth for orthopaedic surgery. Visits by many busy Lions and their ladies including that of our Lord Mayor Lion Tom Wardle, have helped to bring brightness into the life of a young girl, who not so many moons ago, prior to a road accident, was a fit member of our society. Those Lions and their ladies whose names are now in Rhonda's visiting book are more than repaid in self-satisfaction for helping one less fortunate than themselves. STRENGTHENING THE BOND OF SPONSORSHIP .This year has seen a unique campaign to strengthen the bonds of fellowship between the parent Club -City of Perth and those Clubs which have been sponsored by it. By a planned series of visitations with members rostered to visit certain clubs under the organisation of Group-Leaders, all nine Clubs including as far north as Ge raldton and as far south as Bunbury have been officially visited by City of Perth. Great enthusiasm has been displayed by the host clubs, who collective-ly will shortly return the compliment. HIS EXCELLENCY WILL GRACE THE 11FAMILY RE-UNION DINNER'' Repres~ntatives of all the Clubs sponsored by City of Perth have accepted invitations to attend the Family Re-Union meeting .. Also represente d by other Clubs, and attended by District Officers, this meeting will make history in the District. Amongst those present will be District Governor Tom Cameron and as Guest Speaker, none other than Honorary Member of City of Perth His Excellency, Major General Sir Douglas Kendrew, KCMG, CB, CBE, DSO. TWO DISTINGUISHED LIONS HONOUR EACH OTHER At a very well attended meeting, including both Presidents from 35.

Page 24

other metropolitan Clubs, and District Officers, District Governor Tom Cameron made his official visit to City of Perth. His announce-ment that the Lions' EyeClinic had been confirmed and accepted offic-ially, was received with great enthusiasm. On thi s same occasion the members were proud to have in their midst a newly elected Lion in the Right Honourable the Lord Mayor /0/ Tom Wardle. With dignity and respect, President Wally, with District Governor Tom's participation, inducted the Lord Mayor Lion Tom Wardle as a member of the first Lions Club in W . A,, Each of these distinguished Lions expressed their feelings of honour at the other' s presence. HONOUR OF BEING A "HOST CLUB1' At this same meeting in the presence of both the District Governor and the Lord Mayor, President Wally announced that a singular honour had been granted to the Lions Club of City of Perth. He explained that approval had been granted by Lions International, by District 201L, and by the Club1s directors that the full name of the first Lions Club in W ,,A . would be Lions Club of City of Perth (Host). 3rd. 201L DISTRICT CONVENTION Hosted by the Lions Club of Morley, at Canterbury Court, more than 400 Lions and ladies converged from far and wide to attend the 3rd. District Convention. Opened by Honorary Lion, His Excellency the Governor, Major General Sir Douglas Kendrew, KCMG, CB, CBE, DSO, this Convention was a credit to its organisers. Guests of Honour were International Director Jamie Jamieson, and Chairman of the Council of District Governors, Rex Turner. Highlights of the Con-vention were magnificent addresses by these two prominent Lions, the Forum conducted by Perth' s member International Representative Joe Mason with Cab. /Sec. Don Brougham and Cab. /Treasurer Bill Oakley as speakers. Election resulted in the choice of Lions Club of Albany as Host Club for the 4th District Convention in 1970. A breath-taking silence preceded the announcement that Deputy District Governor Dr. Jack Hoffman had been elected District Govern-or Ele et for 19 69-70. The Club takes this opportunity of re cording in its history the members' hearty congratulations, and their desire to give their wholehearted support to his leadership. 3 6.

FAMILY RE -UNION BORE FRUIT In the distinguished presence of 11Perth1s11 Honorary Member, His Excellency the Governor of Western Australia, this unique meeting, previously referred to, justified the enthusiasm of its originator President Wally Hughes. The importance of the event attracted 199 Lions, .including the District Governor Tom Cameron, and representatives of no less than 9 Lions Clubs. A highlight of this memorable occasion was an inspiring address by His Excellency on the imminent launching of the 11Big Brother11 movement. The Governor expressed confidence, that when the time was ripe, he hoped for support for this worthy cause by various service organ-izations including Lions. MEMBERSHIP AW ARDS On this memorable occasion, those sponsors who supported the year's vigorous membership programme were presented by President Wally Hughes with Membership Awards. Those receiving presentations of awards and/or certificates from Lions International included the following sponsors : Past Presidents Tom Chapple, Stan Webster, Malcolm Levinson, Robert Levinson and Des Wooding, International R.epresentative Joe Mason, Lions Neal Durack, Ian Forbes, Bob Gude, Andy Kann, Gerrard Koenig, Gordon Langman, Colin Masel, Noel Smith and Bill Strecker. PRESENTATION OF CLUB HISTORY On the occasion of the "Family Re -Union11 President Wally announced the completion of the first seven years of the History of the Lions Club of City of Perth (Host). In paying tribute to the work of those concerned, special mention was made of the contribution of International Representative Lion Joe Mason, the Club's honorary photographer Lion Arthur Nutt, and the Club's first Historian P.D.G. Malcolm Levinson. On behalf of all those mentioned, Lion Malcolm Levinson acknowledged the expressions of gratitude, and ex.pressed the hope that dissemination of this information in the form of an inexpensive reproduction of the History, might help provide incentive for the Club to go from strength to strength. 38. /OS /CB

OUR LADIES ARTISTIC OR AUTISTIC? Following on a donation by the Ladies 1 Auxiliary of a piano, to lighten the burden of Autistic Children, the Ladies 1 Night in April was ce le bra ted by the choice as Guest Speaker of Dr. Robins on, the Psychiatrist-Superintendent of the Princess Margaret Hospital. His subject Autistic Children re -assured all present of the worthi-ness of the cause. SEVENTEENTH NATIONAL CONVENTION ''City of Perth" was represented by both International Represent-ative Lion Joe Mason and Lion President Elect Neal Durack at the National Convention on the Gold Coast. It was at this convention that District Governor Elect, Dr. Jack Hoffman took part in elect-ing the Chairman of the Australian Council of District Governors -Past Governor Colin Ringer, for the year 1969-70. Upon his re-turn President E1ect Neal Durack as guest speaker, gave a stirr-ing resume of this great congregation of Australian Ltonism. EIGHT -FOLD INDUCTION At the Club's May dinner meeting, President Wally in his customary air of warmth and dignity, inducted no less than eight new Lions. This practically completed the fulfilment of one of President Wally's ambitions for the year -to vastly increase club membership. This year showed an .increase of from 47 to 66 members. All sponsors deserved thanks for their contribution, but for leadership in this regard, the name of President Wally Hughes has become conspicuous in the annals of this Club's history. MEDICAID -TO HELP THE NEEDY Approval by the President and Board of Directors of an .idea brought forward by International Representative Lion Joe Mason, has resulted in the launching of a worthy project. Much planning together with co-operation of the Red Cross, has resulted in Chairman Lion Bob Campbell and his Committee sewing the seeds /07 of a great project -the collection of surplus drugs and medical and dental equipment. After sorting, checking and calibrating etc. these supplies are to be disseminated on a world wide_ basis to those in great need. Hundreds of man-hours have been devoted, and a 1 ready s up p 1 i e s are r 011 i ng in. 39.

FIRST AID KITS Well known is Lions' contribution to helping the Blind, first with the ''white stick" and then by prevention both by opthalmic researc and Glaucoma Screening. 11A stitch in time saves nine11, and here is an unique project to help the public to avoid catastrophe! A First-Aid-Kit to be sold by the thousands at keenly competitive v;alue! Amongst those who have spent countless hours on launching this project, are Lion Don Leavy (whose brainchild it was), and Chairman Lion Murray Fletcher and his Committee. Proceeds will eventually help to establish the Lions Eye Centre. The foundations have been laid, and it evolves upon the incoming Board of Directors to provide the incentive to Club members to do their share, in establishing this unique community service. YOUTH OF THE YEAR Again this national project received full support from 'City of Perth'. Under the chairmanship of Lion Reg. Johnson, the Youth Corr1mittee arranged for the contest of candidates from three schools. The winner at Club le ve 1; John Craig of Hale School had next to face the panel of District Judges. Though 1Perth1s' contes-tant proved not to be the District winner, his performance was a source of pride to the Lions Club of City of Perth. HORSES AND LIONS AT THE TROTS The reputation of Lionism -to help those less fortunate than themselves -resulted in the Trotting Association kindly conceding that City of Perth Club could share in a Trotting Night in July. Half of the proceeds which amounted to $3241 has been ear -mark-ed for the Lions Eye Centre. A very commendable project ?-nd the forerunner, it is hoped, to similar events in the future. BATTLE OF THE BANDS In the delightful environs of the Royal King's Park Tennis Club, a Band Contest, appealing mainly to youth of the community, was jointly staged by 'City of Perth' in conjunction with the lions Clubs of Perth We stern and Fremantle. Irrespective of the $2 50 raised, this project, offering popular open-air entertainment, spread the word of Lion.ism amongst some thousands of patrons, 40.

After duly installing the new Office Bearers, Lion President Wally offered his full co-operation to the newly elected President Lion Neal Durack and his Board of Directors. As the memorable moment arrived for the handing over of the emblem of authority -the Club's gavel -members witnessed the transfer of respons-ibility from President Wally to President Neal -two of the most experienced Lions in District 201L. With Lion President Wally's record as an inspiration to the new Board of Directors, and under the competent leadership of Lion President Neal Durack the City of Perth Club could not but prosper in the new year. 41.
