Some people go out of their way to thank a veteran they know, or take to social media tothank the troops, and as a veteran I thank you for praise; however this day in particular isnot about us veterans and current service members. Memorial Day is a day ofremembrance for those who served and are no longer with us.For almost a decade of my life, I served in the United States Army Infantry and had a careerof ups, along with many downs. I took so much pride in wearing that uniform with the nametape on my right chest saying “Gottuso”, and the name tape on my left chest, over mybeating heart, saying “U.S. Army”. Everyday I knew being a part of this 1% in a combat armsbranch of the military was special. During my career I noticed something that stood out in the uniform of some people I servedwith... a silver or black bracelet. As a Private, I wanted to fit in with my peers and get one, until I learned their true meaning. Written by:Josh Gottuso, ADM IEThe U.S. military makes up just 1% of our population—thissmall force protects us from the flames of the outside world. As a nation, we honor those who answer the call with twoholidays: Veterans Day and Memorial Day.With plenty of holidays year round, we often gather withfriends and family and enjoy their company without realizingthe true reason for the holiday. Memorial DayAwarenessHonoring Their LegacyGRITTY
The Gary Sinise foundation donates tomilitary families, veterans and firstresponders. This bracelet is only attained when a fellow solider, yourbuddy, pays the ultimate sacrifice with their life. Onthese bracelets reads their name, date of birth, and dayof passing, with the internal sacred creed that they willnever be forgotten. During my military career, I sadlyacquired a few of these bracelets. Everyday I woke upand looked at my wrist with the pain and memory of thelast thing I said to them, but more importantly what wasleft unsaid.Memorial Day is the day for our country to recognize this sacrifice. This is the day forour fallen family members, friends, high school acquaintances on your social media, and the person in your gyms that didn’t have the good fortune of returning home. Thisday is for them.In the military all you had to do was look at someone’s wrist and know that their hearts werefilled with pain and love for their fellow countryman... and those memories do not go awayafter you stop putting on your uniform. On this Memorial Day, I ask that you to take a few seconds of your day and fill your heart, notwith sadness, but with gratitude for those that served and lost their life, so that we may liveour days with joy, happiness, and sharing kindness.Click the logos to visit the foundation website!Foundations toSupportThe USO assists wounded warriorsand fallen service members as well ascurrent military service personnel andtheir families who are transitioningout of the military.
