2 California Hospital Medical DialogueMEC Member SpotlightIn each issue of MD News, we feature a Medical Executive Committee member so our physicians can get to know them better. In this issue, we are pleased to share this Q&A with Chasity Jennings-Nunez, MD, California Hospital’s OB Chair and Site Director of the OB Hospitalist Group. What inspired you to enter the medical field and to specialize in obstetrics? I don’t have a specic event or encounter with a person that I remember as the inspiration for my interest in medicine. My father was a teacher and United Methodist Minister. My mother was a dietician, and then the owner of a daycare. Both earned college degrees during a time when systems sought to limit the options for African Americans to very dened boxes. No one in my immediate or extended family was a doctor, yet I remember from as early as the third grade checking out books from the school library about careers in medicine. I don’t remember ever seriously considering any other career. I was born into a family that valued service to others and I identied with the role of “doctor.” Obstetrics and gynecology is the best of all medical worlds. There is continuity of care, surgery, preventive and primary care. I care for mostly healthy women and often under very positive circumstances. The illnesses I treat can often be managed denitively with delivery, surgery or an eective medication. Some days are routine, but every day has the potential for challenges and having to utilize all of my knowledge and expertise. It is an incredible privilege to be a part of the Mother of all specialties. What are you most proud of as a physician? It is not trite to say that every day, I make a dierence in someone’s life. Particularly as an OBGYN who currently practices obstetrics every day, I am literally a part of life-changing events, helping to bring in a new life to the world. You can’t get a much more impactful or satisfying career.Who are your role models? I have worked with incredible individuals throughout my career, not just other OBGYNs, but physicians from other specialties, nurses and sta members from every department in the hospital. We all share a desire to care for patients, promote health and ease suering. Having graduated from one of the top medical schools in the country, I literally know people who are working to change the face of medicine. Saying that, I think it is easy for me to say that my biggest role models were my rst role models–my mother and father. They modeled the importance of not just education, but learning and growth. They showed me what it looks like to love your fellow person; they taught me humility, but also to take pride in my work. To paraphrase a book title, “Everything I needed to know, I knew by kindergarten.”If you had all the time in the world to learn a new skill, what would it be and why?How to condently read an EKG kidding, but not kidding . I’d also like to become a strong swimmer or a runner. When you watch people who are good at those things, they just look like they are in another place of existence. What is your favorite movie? It changes based on my mood, but I can watch Silver Linings Playbook again and again. What do you like to do in your spare time?I don’t know if I am a “foodie,” but I love to eat and try new restaurants. Beyond that, I am a denite home body and happy to be at home doing whatever I choose.Family Residency Program Awarded Grant to Serve Underserved CommunitiesThe MSM/CHMC Family Medicine Residency Program has been awarded the maximum grant of by the Song-Brown Primary Care Residency Programs. We are excited to receive this funding from the Department of Health Care Access and Information, which will help further the Residency Program's mission to train future family physicians dedicated to serving medically underserved communities.
