Chinese New Year 2021 ~ February 12th Year of the Ox (and other Bovidae) By Sarah Anderson In the lore of the Chinese Zodiac, the Ox is in the second position. As the story goes, the Ox was leading in the race to the Jade Emperor’s party, but close to arrival, the clever Rat tricked the Ox into letting him ride on the back of Ox. Just as they neared the Emperor’s palace, Rat jumped down and landed in front of Ox. This clever move allowed Rat to be first, and Ox took second place. There is a saying, “Strong as an ox” and considering the characteristics of the Ox personality, it refers not only to the physical strength, but mental stamina as well. Those born in the Year of the Ox are thus considered to be diligent, putting their best effort into all they do. An Ox is considered to be honest and trustworthy, but sometimes stubborn in their ways with a tenacity to work through any task, no matter how difficult.
