About the Cover S T Y L E D S H O O T P H O T O S B Y L AU R A O L S O N L O C AT I O N HAV R E D E G R AC E M A RY L A N D Labor of love at La Banque When a group of great talents comes together the results can be wondrous For our spring styled shoot La Banque at the Seaplane Base served as the backdrop but more importantly also the inspiration And it is clear everyone involved was enlivened by the possibilities of this special spot by the Bay Photographer Laura Olson stepped onto the scene with fresh eyes and was immediately taken with the venue calling it absolutely stunning and it shows Each of the vignettes within the scene the dock the sweeping stairs a luxurious tablescape overlooking the water the delectable dessert spread an arch dripping with the brightest blooms imaginable had its own beauty and charm granting Laura the advantage of every angle every nuance The three women who styled the shoot La Banque owner Kim Barth planner Marta Kastner of Affairs Extraordinaire by Marta and Donna Meros owner of Essex 8 Florist enjoyed the opportunity for collaboration and took it to the highest level I would do it again in a heartbeat Kim says She also loved working with Laura who took some of the photos from an unusual vantage point the Susquehanna River That was the first time I ve seen a photographer get in the water and I was so proud of her Kim says Along with her willingness to do anything for the perfect shot Laura had one other advantage Her models were her own son and daughter in law recent newlyweds Hunter and Alexandra Olson allowing Laura to tell their story with truth and spontaneity And such a sweet story it is We met through our church Alexandra says When I first met him it was his going away party for Ranger School for the Army The whole time he was gone his mother and the whole church were trying to set us up C H E S A P E A K E B AY W E D D I N G CO M S P R I N G 2 0 2 0 Having recently gotten out of a relationship she was adamant she wasn t interested And though he had found Alexandra quite beautiful upon their first meeting Hunter was more concerned with his duties But love does tricky things The first time we hung out after he got home from Ranger School I was like Oh wow I really like this guy Alexandra says The matchmakers instincts saw true the pair were married on May 23 2019 When Laura approached them about being the subjects for this shoot Alexandra was happily on board An entire photo session another time around with her new hubby hair and makeup done to the nines and a second chance to wear her dress that radiant smile says it all

More About the Venue If you want to make an entrance this is your place Havre de Grace s La Banque at the Seaplane Base has gained renown for its waterfront views in a downtown location but it truly stands out for the incredibly rare distinction of also being an airport allowing a bride or groom to arrive by plane Venue owner operator Kimberly Barth says brides have elected for that option just twice since the venue opened in 2016 Arriving by water has been the more popular mode of entry thus far We have had several brides come in by boat I had groomsmen come in on a Zodiac which was super cool I m still waiting for some grooms to come in on Jet Skis 007 style I think that would be so awesome she laughs She averages 140 events annually in tandem with her indoor location just up the stairs the historic La Banque de Fleuve opened in 2010 after being beautifully restored Kim loves being able to offer the seaplane base to couples It s waterfront and it s got magnificent views Nature always attracts people and especially water 12 And she loves her brides There s not a girl when I send her down that aisle that I don t start to cry I get it I get why it s so important But it s Havre de Grace itself that has her heart and she is keen for others to experience its charms You come back here the seaplane base you would never guess there is a whole little city behind you It s a beautiful thing for our clients because they have access to that world To be able to host an outdoor waterfront wedding but also have this entire town as your venue it s really a unique thing There aren t many places like this that have all of these unique features together Havre de Grace as a whole has reaped the benefit of Kim s devotion as she seems to have a knack for helping like minded people connect I ve had really good opportunities to create synergy between businesses being fortunate enough to find tenants who are willing to invest their time and livelihood here and open businesses here that complement their neighbors See our related story on page 44 Photos courtesy of La Banque at the Seaplane Base C H E S A P E A K E B AY W E D D I N G CO M S P R I N G 2 0 2 0

A bouquet can be a beautiful wild work of art with bright blooms and cascades of leaves a lush garden you carry in your hand Or it can be tamed into a gorgeous orb perhaps a bit more manicured but just as lovely and elegant Priscilla Horne owner of Twisted Vine Wedding Event Florals can pull off either look in fabulous fashion She does admit a preference for the garden y style I like that looser look where the greenery is hanging out and things are bouncing around and there is a lot of movement in the flowers The greenery trend has been really nice to me because I like designing like that Kind of wild and free With her incredible knowledge and more than 20 years of experience in floral design Priscilla is in high demand She and her staff of talented designers will take on anywhere from 80 to 100 weddings annually but most of her weekends must be booked a year in advance When you first come to her for a consultation she prefers to work from a basic starting point perhaps your overall theme or color scheme I always have the most difficulty when I have a girl come in and say I have no idea what I want But beyond the basics your knowledge of florals is of little concern We sit down and I have a form that I go through and we step by step We look at the color palette I ll go over flower choices with them and we use the internet a lot Pinterest pulling up flowers and different designs until we settle on what they like Priscilla then goes through every aspect of the wedding where flowers might be used the bouquets personals such as corsages and boutonnieres ceremony flowers then cocktail hour escort and welcome tables centerpieces and any special items such as tossed bouquets C H E S A P E A K E B AY W E D D I N G CO M S P R I N G 2 0 2 0 1 9

She concludes the consultation by talking about delivery With the help of a number of assistants she will travel to weddings up to two hours away from her home base in North East Despite the lengthy list of details Priscilla says the initial planning takes only about an hour She then creates a mood board for each couple showcasing everything she will be using for their wedding so they have a clear picture of the look for their big day And she stays open to changes all the way up to the final days before the ceremony As a matter of fact none of the girls know how many tables they will have exactly until all the RSVPs come in so I have to wait until two weeks before their event to even finalize their last numbers It s all part of the process Priscilla is also refreshingly flexible when it comes to cost which can range drastically I have no minimums I do weddings from 800 to 10 000 It s all depending on their budget She would never turn anyone away I try very hard to make sure if a girl comes to me with a 1 000 budget we re going to put something on her table for her 20 Of course a bigger budget will buy you more drama like the show stopping elevated centerpieces in towering vases That s the first thing you see when you walk in the door To keep the price tag more manageable many brides will choose to do a combination of highs and lows for their centerpieces Priscilla says When creating her works of art she strives to use locally grown plants and flowers when they are in season such as peonies in spring and sunflowers in fall even pulling willow branches from her own backyard because they stay fresh longer and she says they re simply prettier She also enjoys accentuating pieces with her own special touches based on what is growing at that moment If they ve set the amount of flowers and what they re going to get and if they trust me they will let me add in fun things And why not It s that enhancement of detail that can transform your wedding into something truly enchanting CBW C H E S A P E A K E B AY W E D D I N G CO M S P R I N G 2 0 2 0

When they book for the weekend they get exclusive use of the property for two days from Friday to Sunday check out Everybody that does that loves it Booking all the rooms allows for about 30 overnight guests Holly says some wedding parties will stay on for additional days They re looking to have their family with them or farflung friends from around the world They say If they re flying in we don t want them to just come for the wedding and leave so they ll book it out You re protected here in that you ve got so much privacy And the serenity is what everybody talks about about how quiet it is and the beauty of it Just off the conservatory another somewhat recent addition to the manor the Carriage House has also become a favored spot With its abundant natural light brides and their bridesmaids love to have their hair and makeup done there 40 Holly says Then after the nuptials are complete the newly married couple often stays in the Carriage House because it offers a spacious loft and balcony to gaze out over that coveted view For the reception wedding groups will often party in a tent on the side lawn which gives direct access to the sunporch music room and library common rooms that can be used for indoor cocktail space depending on the weather Holly says Large weddings which max out at 225 guests must bring in their own caterers serving staff and the like Holly provides a list of recommended vendors The caterers that are on the list have all been here and they ve been very professional and responsible And their food is delicious For bigger groups coming from out of town overflow wedding attendees can stay at the neighboring Hotel Lodge at Great Oak Landing at other area B Bs or at a hotel in Chestertown C H E S A P E A K E B AY W E D D I N G CO M S P R I N G 2 0 2 0

For most of their bigger jobs much of the prep work is done in their own kitchen with the final cooking done onsite in a venue s kitchen or the Schmidts kitchen trailer that they can bring along with them We ve done events smack dab in the middle of a field before Photo courtesy of Garden Garnish As the chef Brian works with each couple beforehand coming up with a menu to please all palates then also meeting them in advance at their venue to discuss such details as the layout of the tables and the timing for cocktail hour and the various courses of the meal Cathy is the go to gardener and fills in a lot of gaps as Brian says and that is putting it lightly She gets the staff lined up and handles much of the paperwork for the business not to mention running their children all over creation for their crazy and varied schedules 54 C H E S A P E A K E B AY W E D D I N G CO M S P R I N G 2 0 2 0 So let s take a moment to get to know her now Right outside the doors of their kitchen Cathy grows a robust vegetable and herb garden plus a butterfly garden and a field of wildflowers We re really into environmental stewardship so the property next door is nothing but wildflowers for our bees and they love it she says As if that isn t enough she also does canning and makes her own jams And now inside the house I grow my own microgreens my kids call it the lab Cathy says My goal was to try to grow a few things all year round and never have to ask another purveyor for it While her lab has been up and running just over a year the garden and sustainability practices have been longstanding Their property is certified as Bay Wise and Pollinator Friendly they are part of the True Blue program guaranteeing their crabs are caught in Maryland and they are on the Green Registry for the state They are also part of Maryland s Best using local produce whenever their own garden falls short and they are simply well intentioned conscientious people who strive to honor nature and stay local It s always been the way we do things It s not new it s not different to us it s just what we do Cathy says I think people are appreciating it more and more With the Schmidts passions running parallel you d be hard pressed to find a couple that is better matched And that melding translates into a well run catering business beloved by many Couples often hire them after attending one of their events And no sur
