About the Cover STYLED SHOOT PHOTOS BY COSTOLA PHOTOGRAPHY LOCATION SOTTERLY SOUTHERN MARYLAND In 2018 Alex and Kristen Suplee were married and had their reception at Historic Sotterley Plantation It rained Fast forward to 2020 and Alex and Kristen came back to Sotterley This time during a pandemic Despite these trials both were an absolute delight to work with acknowledging the situation with levity and grace For Kristen she was at home at Sotterley as she grew up just a few miles away in California Md Her parents got married at Sotterley as well Kristen s father actually stopped by during the shoot to add some colorful commentary but it was clear how much he cared for his daughter and the attachment he felt towards this location Back in 2018 Alex and Kristen participated in the southern wedding tradition of burying the bourbon which dictates that exactly one month before your wedding day you go to the site and bury a bottle of bourbon to keep the rain away Although the rain didn t stay away and Alex humorously noted that they never 8 found the burial site to dig the bottle back up the second part of the tradition Kristen said that they didn t consider any part of this to be bad luck quoting a Hindu idea that a wet knot is harder to untie You re so pumped about the person you re marrying the weather doesn t matter Kristen said The evening of the photo shoot was lovely and filled with mirth It was perfect timing too as many of our vendors had not had much of a chance to fully express their creative spirit due to the many postponements that the coronavirus brought to the industry Yet they were ready Led by wedding planner Heather Miller founder of The Hitched Company everything was neatly organized and beautifully presented She ran such a tight ship that at one point I leaned over to our regional advertising manager Brook Ash a U S Navy veteran and asked how C H E S A P E A K E B AY W E D D I N G CO M FA L L 2 0 2 0 her structure compared to the military Heather had it all so neatly coordinated that the night went off without a hitch Sotterley were remarkable hosts allowing the creativity to shine It had the joy and delight of an actual wedding Alex and Kristen may have been models for the day but their love and affection was as genuine as on their wedding day

K B Bridal s Virtual Experience By C arol ine Sh ively Su che r Photo s by An ne C as e y Photo g raphy For the past decade Bridget Moore has based her business around personal contact face to face meetings and hours spent getting to know her clients at K B Bridal her boutique in the heart of downtown Bel Air Maryland Then came COVID 19 28 C H E S A P E A K E B AY W E D D I N G CO M S P R I N G 2 0 2 0

S tay at home restrictions meant that Bridget and boutique manager Kate Wertsch had to come up with a completely different business model Kate would be doing the stylist part of it and I would be running around the shop and grabbing the dresses that she chose for the bride and throwing them on the mannequins and showing them virtually to get their thoughts Bridget explained We had to game plan strategize and figure out how we create great customer service when we re not in the building Bridget said On that initial call the brides could choose up to six dresses to pick up curbside and bring home for a second video conference Their solution If clients couldn t come to the boutique they d bring the boutique to the clients The pair set up video chats with Kate at her home and Bridget at the store with the brides at another location The brides got creative too with some even spacing their bridesmaids at six foot intervals in the yard so they could all give input while remaining socially distanced It would be as if we were in the dressing room with her but it would all be over video says Bridget She would be trying on the dresses and we would be filling our role as stylists and having her tell us what she does and doesn t love It also meant that far away loved ones could join in C H E S A P E A K E B AY W E D D I N G CO M FA L L 2 0 2 0 29

People have been really creative That Zoom link is shareable We had a bride whose sister was in some amazing tropical place on something like a catamaran but she was still able to participate Kate said K B Bridal and other Maryland businesses were able to open in May after about two months of state ordered Coronavirus closures but they limited how many could be in the shop at one time One of their first in person customers wanted her 10 friends to weigh in on the dress so the team had to get creative She had two guests in the shop and eight of her friends spaced out on the sidewalk and we set up a fitting room so they could all look at her through the window Kate said As devastating as the Coronavirus has been for brides and the wedding industry as a whole the K B team plans to make one part of this new way of doing business permanent conducting video calls with a client even before she walks in the door We use the screen time to really get to know the bride and connect with her Bridget said That s the part of Bridget s business model that won t ever change making every connection personal even if it s a virtual connection CBW 30 C H E S A P E A K E B AY W E D D I N G CO M FA L L 2 0 2 0 Dunks Photography

GLUTEN FREE CINNAMON ROLL MIX Directions 1 bag of mix from Gluten Free Bakery Girl Mix on low to incorporate remainder of liquid 2 cups warm water about 110 degrees or dairy free milk of choice You want the dough to be a bit sticky 1 4 cups of olive oil 1 tsp sugar to feed the yeast Filling 4 Oz of melted dairy free butter or butter A mixture of cinnamon sugar 3 4 c sugar with your choice amount of cinnamon Icing Add 1 3 4 warm liquid to mix in a mixer or mixing bowl Pour in olive oil Turn up to mid high speed mix until dough begins to stick to sides With a spatula pull all the dough away from sides to middle Pull out on to floured table brown rice works the best Shape into a rectangle and begin to roll out keeping in a rectangle shape Spread melted butter all over rolled out dough and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar Now start at edge working your way down the edge rolling up dough Use a hand spatula to help pull up dough and flour underneath to keep from sticking 1 cup powdered sugar if you like thick icing slowly add liquid to desired thickness 2 tbls water 1 4 tsp vanilla Let rise until rolls have doubled or touching about 45 minutes Mix Bake at 350 degrees for 18 20 minutes Ice and serve 38 C H E S A P E A K E B AY W E D D I N G CO M FA L L 2 0 2 0 Prepare pan with pan spray and cut your rolls and place in pan Cover loosely on top to keep from air Place in a warm area

ODYSSEY Mobile Escape Rooms By Brian Shane Photos Provided by Odyssey Mobile Escape Rooms When two longtime pals were brainstorming ideas for an events based business that would be totally outside the box they didn t suspect that they d decide on something that was quite literally an actual box Business partners Matt Handrick and Ryan D Ambrosio have taken the still sizzling trend of the escape room but tweaked the formula by making it mobile Instead of you going to the escape room the escape room comes to you For the uninitiated here s the basic concept a group of people pay to get locked into a confined space to solve a series of clues riddles and puzzles usually on a onehour deadline The core idea is a simple one but escape rooms can be made very complex in their design and execution 40 You walk out of a fair or wedding or birthday party and you walk into something completely different we want you to be in a different world Handrick said There are ambient noises rats in the wall there s fire It s a very immersive thing Handrick and D Ambrosio forged their friendship more than 15 years ago as teammates on competitive national paintball teams In 2017 they spent months spit balling business ideas that hadn t been done before on a large scale They landed on the idea of going mobile with escape rooms which until now usually could be found at brickand mortar locations like strip malls or shopping centers They started their company Odyssey Mobile Adventures with a single mobile escape room trail er Today the Huntingtown Maryland based operation has expanded into a full fledged events service company offering tent rentals photo booths and even axe throwing Odyssey s escape room concepts have included motifs like the torturer s lair where players have to find an object hidden by a wizard in a prison cell In another players solve the mystery of what happened to an abandoned mining station on an asteroid We have all the mechanical elements in there Their mobile escape room is about 135 square feet which can accommodate 2 5 participants per game They also offer a more intimate experience that Handrick calls the escape pod which is about 80 square feet and can be built on site for 2 4 participants Handrick said they re interested in taking that aspect to the next level by making each challenge electronic We ll generally take two of those to a location Handrick said of the pods A lot of kids they have birthday parties in a hall somewhere and we just wheel them inside and pop em up Most kids at birthday parties they ll play through 6 or 7 times In one of our games as you solve this puzzle he said a photo actually lifts on the wall to reveal the hidden gem behind it It happens automatically Once they saw a mother go in with her three kids and at first they were intimidated But when the family figured things out they left that place C H E S A P E A K E B AY W E D D I N G CO M S P R I N G 2 0 2 0

just giddy Handrick said I got an email from the mom My kids that s all they talked about for a week Can I book you guys for a birthday party The cost to book Odyssey Mobile Adventures ranges from 700 to 1 500 depending on how clients wish to customize their package and on the time of rental While they plan to add at least one more escape room and another axe throwing trailer Odyssey is already working on an accoutrement that s even farther off the beaten path robot bartenders Specifically it s an electronic device that can be built to pour a specific drink automatically without a human pouring a drop Handrick said they ve booked dozens of weddings in the last two years because people want their parties to create viral memories and water cooler conversations after the fact Their clients are seeking out something specialized and even zany like axe throwing instead of expected or rote Every wedding we ve booked is from something who s looking for something totally different and off the beaten path If you go to 6 or 7 weddings a year it s the same shtick at every wedding People want something fresh something they ve never seen before and that s very much what we offer Handrick said For more information on Odyssey Mobile Adventures you can find them on social media visit their website at www OdysseyMobileEscape com or call 301 509 8305 CBW

hours of time additional time can be purchased at an hourly rate We partner with a number of other businesses to provide catering flowers music and DJ etc and will provide lists for wedding couples to review and select from said Levinson Many people wonder how the Hummingbird Inn got its name Prior to owning the house Levinson had a career in IT management at large international law firms An avid traveler he has been to nearly 70 countries for business and personal travel It was a lifelong dream to one day start a bed and breakfast with his late husband Kevin Tragically Kevin did not survive a car accident in 2013 After receiving a number of sympathy cards with hummingbirds on them Levinson thought it was odd and he looked into the meaning of the bird The hummingbird is thought to take on the spirit of loved ones This totally described the type of person Kevin was full of love life and energy A few years later Levinston purchased the historic home and renamed it the Hummingbird Inn in memory of Kevin What s amazing is the number of people who come here because of the name a number of people have their own similar hummingbird stories and experiences said Levinson who is ordained to perform wedding ceremonies Being the only gay owned and operated B B in Easton we have had the opportunity and pleasure to perform weddings for both same sex as well as opposite sex couples he said proudly A recurring compliment in guest reviews highlights the warmth and welcoming atmosphere at the Hummingbird Inn It is not surprising that one does not need to look further than the innkeeper himself Travel people cooking these are some of my top passions in life I ve always enjoyed being a host to friends and family said Levinson I love meeting all the guests making new friends giving them an elevated breakfast experience and providing people an amazing experience that they will remember treasure and want to come back again and again for CBW C H E S A P E A K E B AY W E D D I N G CO M FA L L 2 0 2 0 49

THE MANOR The Manor is the largest of Bohemia Overlook s wedding spots spread over 25 acres Weddings can be held outdoors on a bluff overlooking the expanse of the Elk River and for the reception up to 300 people can fit in a tent covered in sheer white draping with crystal chandeliers lighting up the dance floor It s a complete blank canvas The tent is white the floor is a neutral color and you can make it anything you want says Denise There are two concrete pads which is another bonus because most tented venues are in the grass The bride groom and their friends and families can spend the day getting ready at the Manor House a stately old home with white columns and a formal front porch Inside the Manor there s enough room for the groom and his party to take over the ground floor while the bride and bridesmaids spend the day preparing and relaxing upstairs The Manor House is stunning It was built in the 1930 s and we kept the integrity of the house when we painted and decorated We kept that Old world feel and people love that Denise says of her most popular venue THE BEACH The Beach has a more casual feel than the Manor but also offers a panoramic view of the Elk River and borders the property s vineyard I ve been to places that when you take pictures you have to make sure that you point the camera in just the right direction to get the pretty background but at the Beach every angle is perfect because you are surrounded by beauty says Denise Those photos can be taken in the sand along the pier or inside the large white tent that seats up to 300 Like all of the venues the Beach has a location for the bridal party to spend the day a Nantucket style house with a beachy vibe and vaulted ceilings just right for those candid shots C H E S A P E A K E B AY W E D D I N G CO M FA L L 2 0 2 0 53

THE BARN The Barn is a perfect combination of rustic charm and romantic elegance with Amish made barnwood tables and wooden beams that bring a country vibe to the party while a showstopping chandelier adds sophistication and style It can be seriously rustic or barely rustic Denise explains It all depends on your d cor whether you use lanterns and burlap or sequins and large elegant flower arrangements It s all how you make the feel of the barn yours The Barn can host a wedding ceremony and reception for up to 120 guests It sits atop Bohemia Overlook s tasting room which has been fashioned out of a former racehorse stable You get the tasting room for your cocktail hour They can serve our wine or have a mobile bar service that provides a licensed and insured bartender Denise says The Farmhouse is included with the Barn venue It s just steps away from the Barn and has a lovely bridal suite a second bedroom and a main living area THE BARRACKS At many wedding venues the groom and his party are an afterthought They come rolling in at the last minute after jumping in their tuxes at home or a hotel room or perhaps a bar Not at Bohemia Overlook Grooms here have the option of the Barracks named in honor of the Elk River s role in the Revolutionary War When people tour our venues the brides and the moms usually ask the questions Denise says The grooms usually are pretty quiet until I tell them about the Barracks Then they keep saying Are we going to see the Barracks When are we going to see the Barracks Then we go in there and the guys just light up This charming house is decorated with an American theme and divided into two sides There s room for 22 on the large side where the men can work up a sweat playing ping pong cornhole Kan Jam football baseball or soccer with equipment already on site or they can take it easy playing chess or cards If all that fun makes them hungry or thirsty or works up a sweat there s a kitchen bar and showers The smaller side of the Barracks is equipped with the same games and a half bath while both sides have outdoor patios Whichever venue her brides and grooms choose Denise says her goal is for the couple to relax and leave stress behind You are here all day Everyone comes to you you don t have to worry about getting to different places about traffic You don t have to allot an hour to get to the church and then the reception to go get your hair and makeup done You sit there and enjoy yourself she says That leaves just one stress facing the happy couple whether to choose the Manor the Beach or the Barn CBW 54 C H E S A P E A K E B AY W E D D I N G CO M FA L L 2 0 2 0

Dear my fellow 2020 bridal couples This year has been a hard one for many people especially for couples like us who have been trying to plan their wedding As a 2020 bride myself I can attest that it has been pretty difficult to make concrete plans for one of the most important days of our lives when it feels like every day new COVID 19 regulations arise However my now husband and I have relied on each other to maintain a positive attitude and have accepted that no matter how many times our plans change our love for each other is all that really matters I hope by sharing our experience helps you as you plan for your big day no matter what it may look like The initial plan for our wedding was to have a church ceremony followed by a reception with about 100 friends and family members We began planning in May or 2019 and had everything pretty much set to go within a month The wedding wasn t going to be until July 25 2020 so we had plenty of time to sit back and enjoy our time as an engaged couple or so we thought March came along and so did the COVID 19 pandemic Quickly things begin to close as people were told to stay at home and avoid large crowds of people Like many others we thought this whole social distancing pandemic thing would be over within a few months and we could still have our wedding as planned However it became clear towards the end of May and into June that we would not be able to safely have 100 people gather at a church and reception hall Our reception venue told us there could be no open bar dancing or even a shared wedding cake and our original catering company didn t feel comfortable having employees serve a large crowd of people We had older family members who were voicing their concerns about being around a large number of people and we had people who lived far away who were hesitant about going to an airport to fly to our wedding All of these concerns were completely understandable to us which is why we decided to postpone the wedding This was a hard pill to swallow We waited over a year to get married and now it seemed we would have to wait for yet another Quickly we began brainstorming ideas and considering different ways to still maintain our original wedding date while still having the big church ceremony and reception we really wanted Creating this game plan put us somewhat back in control of a situation that seemed totally uncontrollable to next June We could have had our wedding ceremony but only 10 people could be in the church at a time and we didn t want to exclude any family members Although no family members were with us when we went to the courthouse they backed us up with this decision knowing that we will all be able to hopefully celebrate together next year I won t lie our courtroom wedding was definitely lacking in the romantic department The judge did set out figurines and fake flowers to dress up the place a little for us which we laughed about afterward but appreciated the effort nonetheless When we both said I do while wearing masks it really didn t feel real to us Yes we became legally married but it just didn t seem official in our eyes I started to feel a little sad walking out of the courthouse and walking by the church we were supposed to be married in Not wanting to waste the day wallowing in sadness I began to make myself see the positive side of our situation For one we were not the only couple whose wedding plans had to be altered Many many couples were in the same situation as us and many couples from other generations like my grandparents had to alter their wedding plans due to my grandpa being sent to fight in the Vietnam War Another positive we extracted is that we will now have two anniversaries our courthouse date and our church date Having a second wedding date will allow us to extend the excitement and anticipation that precedes a wedding The biggest positive affirmation my husband and I keep telling ourselves is that the only thing that really matters is that we love each other and want to spend the rest of our lives together So many things are out of our control but we can control our own relationship and how we can grow together as a couple There are days when I feel a pang of sadness when I see wedding pictures of people who still had their wedding When this happens remembering the list of reasons to be happy about our wedding decisions helps me stay positive and look forward to the future Our day will come and so will yours whatever you decide to do Sincerely Kaitlin Kulich The decision was made to go to the courthouse in the town and on the weekend we planned to have our wedding and postpone the church ceremony and reception C H E S A P E A K E B AY W E D D I N G CO M FA L L 2 0 2 0 69
