PRESENTSCHAPTER 5: COURAGE
IntroductionCourageI did something that was totally out of my comfort zone and something I’ve never done before. Something I needed to muster courage for and felt like it was the right next step. I went for a hike on a trail that I didn’t know. Alone. Emotions overwhelmed me as I began the trail – the unknown, being by myself, not knowing if I was going to see people, not really knowing what the trail was like and knowing I was not going to have cell service at times. I felt so proud of myself for being out of my comfort zone and DOING IT ANYWAY!2
IntroductionI knew that even though I was hiking alone, I was not really alone, as it was a popular hiking spot. Still I was alone and because I had a purpose to go hiking – to get exercise and push myself out of my comfort zone. I was able to do it, with little hesitation, even though I was scared. On this trail, I made discoveries that might have gone unnoticed if I was hiking with someone. No distractions allowed me to take in the beauty around me and stay in my thoughts.Having a purpose when we need to find courage is key to making a move forward easier. I hope through the Conversation Starter questions you will discover ways to find purpose so that you can be more courageous. How To Video + Art Supplies Set of acrylic paints, minimum of primary and white and black A set of small paint brushes Any size and shape canvas Circle stencils, can be lids from containers, various sizes Paper plate for mixing paints Cup for water6Click Here to Watch!Click Here to Purchase Supplies on Amazon
InstructionsCreation Session #1Using the circle templates, draw as many circles as you’d like onto your canvas. If you’d like to have smaller circles, just find something around the house to trace – maybe the lid of a jar. The circles can be overlapping, creating new unique shapes. If you want straight edges to divide the spaces, find a straightedge or ruler to use.Creation Session #2Once your design is complete, it’s time to paint! It’s up to you how you paint it. Try mixing two or more colors to create a new color that’s not in the palette of colors. Did you know that blue and yellow make green? Red and yellow make orange? And Red and blue make purple? Add white to make a tint of your color! Add black to make a shade. Just enjoy the process of painting and exploring color!7
Instructions8Amy’s Tip: Keeping the paintbrush damp will help the paint spread more easily. Start painting with the lightest color first. Allow paint to dry before painting the space next to it. Keep turning the canvas so it’s easier to reach the painting spot. Pull the paintbrush towards you on the curve, rather than moving up the canvas. Change the water often. Have fun! Ask the questions!Don’t forget to share your creations on social media!Tag @AmysArtPaletteUse #TheDuetProject

Cultivating CourageCourage can be portrayed in many different ways, and although many people in my life have been courageous, I am choosing my older sister Michelle to tell a story of courage.Michelle has always been someone I’ve looked up to. She’s smart and thoughtful. She is logical and the most like our father, so when it comes to thinking about big picture life things, she’s my go-to person. She’s also one of my best friends. Michelle was an English major at UCLA and straight out of college got a job at an advertising agency in Century City. She followed that path and found her identity was tied tightly to her role. After our dad died in 1995, Michelle chose to leave a job she loved to focus on her family.Michelle was a stay-at-home mom from 1995 until her kids went to college in 2011 and during those years, she seemed to have lost her identity. Once her kids were away at college, and they no longer needed her in the same way, she seemed unsure of her purpose. It was around this time that Michelle came to her little sister (Me!) for guidance. She was thinking about becoming a personal trainer. There were many questions she pondered during that time– what’s involved, how much did she want to work, how would others perceive her, what did that mean for her identity– she was not known to be the most athletic or coordinated in the family. However, she had worked out her entire adult life so knew from her own life experience that she felt healthier and wanted to help others feel and be healthier too. 10My Sister Michelle
Michelle was apprehensive - and excited - to make a change at that stage in her life. She was 51 and knew that she wanted to find something to fill her days and fulfill her heart. Having that purpose was what made taking the leap to get certified as a personal trainer easier. Michelle took the needed courses and trainings to become a personal trainer, and in 2015 she stepped onto the path of fitness. At first she worked at a gym, and currently trains clients privately online and in person. She often shares stories with me about her clients’ successes and the impact she’s having on their health journey. I see the impact that becoming a personal trainer has had on Michelle, and am grateful that she took this incredible step of courage. She’s happier, more confident, focused and patient. She really cares about other people’s health and offers kind guidance when asked. So proud of my sister for stepping out of her comfort zone - and honored to have been one of the trusted people she spoke to about her thoughts, feelings and challenges when making that decision. It just goes to show that little sisters know things too - and that we can help each other take courageous steps towards our goals and dreams. Stepping out of our comfort zone is where growth happens. Is there something you have been thinking about and need a little more courage to take action? Who can help you answer your questions and keep moving forward?
