2 Golf School District 67 Newsletter Vol 1 Learning English in D67 The Golf School District 67 community enjoys a rich mixture of cultures and languages Our district s English Language EL Program serves as a gateway for many students to successfully enter our schools Our EL program currently serves 45 children who speak 18 different languages and come from 15 different countries Our EL teacher is Amy Feinstein who works with students from Pre K through 8th grade at both Hynes Elementary School and Golf Middle School At Hynes Amy is assisted by Jeschelle Marcello who works in small groups with Kindergarten to 4th grade students At Golf Middle School Lisa Brown assists Amy part time for students in the 5th 8th grade Students are placed in our EL program based on two screening tools a Home Language Survey and several objective assessments of their current English language skills depending on their grade levels Jeschelle Marcello Pre IPT is used for pre school students MODEL is used for Kindergarten W APT is used for 1st through 8th grades Our EL program model is a Transitional Program of Instruction TPI In this program model students receive special assistance from EL staff as they learn how to speak listen read and write in English Program benefits include Amy Feinstein Fostering academic achievement Preserving linguistic and cultural heritage Enabling non English speakers to learn a second language Bilingualism leads to better attention and problem solving skills The PTA hosts the International Celebration of Cultures in late January Lisa Brown For this celebration students research their native country and this year an open house will be held for our EL Parents At the open house the students will present their country report and have an opportunity to share and take pride in their culture In addition there are important supports for our parents of EL students We provide translation services for report cards and written and oral translations at meetings The Niles Township ELL Parent Center also offers many opportunities for parents to take free classes In the future we hope to offer EL classes within our district during the week The ELL Parent Center provides resources for ACCESS Assessment Update the families of English Language Learners throughout Skokie Jointly supported by school districts in Niles Township it offers English classes health information and support for families who may be unfamiliar with American schools Services are free for families of Niles Township public school children As mandated by state law all District 67 students receiving English language bilingual services must take the Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State to State for English Language Learners ACCESS assessment each year to measure English language proficiency The ACCESS test will be administered between January 25th and February 25th A publication of the Golf School District 67 Board of Education 2

4 Golf School District 67 Newsletter Vol 1 Transportation Update North Shore Transit and A B Bus Service are the district s transportation providers We understand that while this transition presented challenges it has gone well overall These transportation providers are committed to satisfying the transportation needs of the Golf School District 67 families and students Observing the following rules will ensure that student safety and efficiency are our primary focus Students will be picked up and dropped off only at designated bus stops Parents of pre school students must board the bus and assist in seating and receiving their child Kindergarten parents must be at the bus stop to receive students Students MAY NOT ride an alternate bus Parents should first contact the respective bus company about routing questions or problems Northshore Transit Tanisha Perez 847 677 9700 A B Bus Service Jim Hammersmith 847 671 0533 Tom Simmons After 5 00 PM 847 456 7148 Pick up arrival or departure issues Ted Anton District 67 847 269 3738 We appreciate the opportunity to serve you and your children The Great Kindness Challenge Students in Golf School District 67 will take the Great Kindness Challenge at Hynes Elementary School during the week of February 8 12 and at Golf Middle School during the week of February 22 26 This event is devoted to having our students perform as many acts of kindness as possible At the heart of the Great Kindness Challenge is the simple belief that kindness is strength and that it helps to promote a positive peaceful culture in our schools The challenge began in 2012 by the nonprofit Kids for Peace with just three schools participating In 2015 over 4 100 schools united and inspired over 109 million acts of kindness We are excited to join schools across the nation in proving that kindness matters No act of kindness no matter how small is ever wasted Aesop A publication of the Golf School District 67 Board of Education 4

6 Golf School District 67 Newsletter Vol 1 Still Need to Register for Hynes School Kindergarten Please call Hynes School to make an appointment 847 965 4500 Children must be 5 years old on or before September 1 2016 to be eligible for enrollment In order to register your child you must bring all of the following documents 1 original utility bill 2 original lease purchase agreement or recent real estate tax bill 3 valid driver s license and 4 child s certified birth certificate You will also need the name and phone number of your child s physician as well as emergency information You cannot register if you do not have the required documentation There will also be a registration fee The registration process is approximately 25 30 minutes Save Your Spot for We will continue to offer a half day tuition based kindergarten enrichment class Our program will provide children with enrichment experiences in literacy math science social studies as well as art and music The enrichment class is taught by a certified Hynes teacher The schedule for the class is listed below 8 30 11 00 Kindergarten class 11 00 12 30 Recess lunch story time 12 30 3 00 Enrichment class Children may purchase a school lunch or bring a brown bag lunch from home A publication of the Golf School District 67 Board of Education 6
