Action Trail Training Quest Connection Cove There is no better place to start building on your leadership qualities than in the job you currently have It can be as simple as watching and listening It s one thing to simply do the job you are asked to do but it s another thing to look for opportunities to contribute value Think of an area under your control or influence in which you could make a strong contribution to our clients If you were asked to discuss this with the CEO what would you say Don t just be a doer be a thinker too When asked or expected to complete a task think about how this task contributes to the success of the team department and organization When you are making an important decision discuss your thoughts with peers from a different program department to see how your decision might affect them In a team meeting discuss a specific process or practice and recommend improvements on how to operate Discuss with a group of peers your team or a new coworker what you have learned on the job in the past 3 months why this has been valuable and what can you do with this information Volunteer for a day in a different program or department or participate in a crossfunctional project that is supporting a different program There are great opportunities for you to build your leadership qualities while on the job and there are many wonderful opportunities that exist for you outside your normal job duties What better way to have a positive effect on the work you and your coworkers do every day at ACH than to actively and positively discuss your department s work and the agency s purpose with those in other departments and outside the agency Here are some suggestions on how you can get started Talk with staff in other departments especially direct care staff They have first hand appreciation of how our services impact clients and how support functions can facilitate their jobs Their insights can be uniquely valuable Arrange a meeting with one of our chiefs or program directors to discuss how your job specifically contributes to the vision and mission of ACH Invite a staff person from another department to your staff meeting to learn about your department s services and clients Invite an external speaker with proven expertise to present during a team meeting Get a different perspective by finding and using an external mentor in another department agency to test your thinking about ideas for your department Discuss with an external person how your work at ACH affects your personal purpose and values Developing leadership qualities often shifts between feeling like we have it all figured out to feeling that we know nothing at all Success is no accident It is hard work perseverance learning studying and most of all love of what you are doing and learning to do Here are some additional resources to help you with your training quest in centering on ACH s purpose Attend an ACH Lunch Learn To attend register on our website achservices org Read through the ABOUT US section on the ACH website to learn more about the history programs and work of ACH Become a member of a professional association to learn the trends within your profession and or the human services industry and how these trends might affect your work at ACH To find related articles video and podcast in Power DMS search for the following course Centers on ACH s Purpose Learning Series The Wall is Around My Heart Child Maltreatment Prevention Past Present and Future Human Trafficking and Child Welfare A Guide for Child Welfare The Invisible Problem Teenage Homelessness TEDx Video Engaging People at Risk for Suicide Podcast
