2 The Country Day Schooland Ed Eberts, were present. There were many stories shared and references to the way things were in those  rst few years and the decades following the school’s founding. While CDS has grown from 47 to almost 800 students, so much of what they talked about, and especially the close-knit community and sense of belonging, still rings true today. At this half-century milestone, CDS is now hitting its stride. Our Junior School build is scheduled to open as part of the 50th celebrations next spring. We are incredibly fortunate to have this group of dedicated volunteer directors who have moved mountains and generously given their time and  nancial support to achieve this timeline in the face of unexpected obstacles. I would like to thank departing Board members Nadia Chychrun and Molly Fitzpatrick for their years of service and welcome our new Board members: Jim Emanoilidis, Varun Kapila and Glen Way.We continue to build upon the four pillars of our long-range plan. I am pleased to report that our  nancial stability, risk management and governance also remain strong. On behalf of my fellow Board members, I want to once again acknowledge all who helped make this past year run so smoothly. And thank you to our Head of School, John Liggett, and the school’s faculty and sta for their ongoing dedication to o ering a top quality education with balance for our students.Karen AdamsAlumni Parent ’18 & ’20Chair, Board of DirectorsSpring term 2022 allowed us all to take a collective breath and feel an unspoken understanding that “We’ve got this.” It was surreal to see our students participate once again in the rights of passage that those who came before had taken for granted: events like Grade 8 parties, grad formal, graduations and parent gatherings. We were emerging from the worst of it with plenty of cause for hope and optimism on the horizon. In spite of all of the delays and supply shortages we encountered with our Building Magic campaign over the past year, this project was looking brighter too. We could now observe the progress from Du erin Street, not just from behind the scenes, as the building started to rise and take shape over the summer and fall. These exciting breakthroughs coincided with our 50th anniversary year in which we kicked o the  rst day of school at our Welcome Back Barbeque with a record number of families. We all visibly marvelled at how good it felt to gather once again with one another and our children. This sense of belonging—something I have always felt to be palpable every time I step foot on campus, whether as a parent of my two graduates or as a volunteer—was in full  ight. The Danish refer to this as “hygge,” and I like to reference it whenever speaking with a group of parents as that “special sauce” the school community has cultivated over 50 years. New students and returning students always feel welcome and a sense of belonging at CDS.I recently shared this reference with our founding families at a special dinner we hosted in October. It was an intimate gathering at which both of our co-founders, Mo at Dunlap Message from the Chair of the Board The Feeling of “Belonging” Still Prevails at CDS 50 Years On“While CDS has grown from 47 to almost 800 students … the close-knit community and sense of belonging still rings true today.”

4 The Country Day SchoolThis year marks the 50th anniversary of The Country Day School! How wonderful it is to be involved in a school that was hatched some 50 years ago with the dream of providing a sound and balanced education amidst a caring and connected community. I am honoured to report that those same values and aims persist as we chart the course for the next 50 years at CDS.CDS has grown in so many ways across those  ve decades. Our facilities are impres-sive, spanning some 250,000 square feet on 100 pristine acres. The school’s  nances are managed professionally through a talented  nance team with oversight from an experi-enced and dedicated Board of Directors. The school has raised approximately $20 million and invested $35 million in capital projects in the past decade and is currently carrying no debt. But most impressively is how the human resources at CDS – where our rubber hits the road—have grown by leaps and bounds. We began in 1972 with three teachers educating 47 students. This year, we have 108 faculty and 39 sta serving just under 800 students. This enviable student-teacher ratio allows CDS to truly support, know and inspire each student. Message from the Head of School Celebrating 50 Years of GrowthIn 1975, the  rst Head of School, John Pratt, predicted that CDS would grow somewhat larger but never so large that the essential warmth, humanity, and capacity for individual attention of our school would be jeopardized. He could not have been more right. Amidst all that growth, this is still a community focused on the development and success of young people. Just as in 1972, when you arrive on campus, the intangibles of care, connected-ness, and respect for peers and elders are made tangible. The result is an abundance of smiles and a pervasive love of learning. The foundational values and human landscape at The Country Day School are alive and well.John LiggettHead of School“This year, we have 108 faculty and 39 staff serving just under 800 students. This enviable student-teacher ratio allows CDS to truly support, know and inspire each student.”

6 The Country Day SchoolAs I write this message, I think we can all rejoice in the fact that the school has stayed open and students are playing on sports teams, performing in plays, going on  eld trips and learning and growing together on the beautiful CDS campus. In addition, 2022/2023 is a record year for student enrolment. It has been a great start to the year!During the 2021/2022 year, the school and community showed tremendous resilience as we continued to navigate challenges presented by COVID. From a  nancial perspective, the school’s  nancial sustainability allowed it to adapt and support our community in many ways, from hiring more teachers and sta , putting the required COVID safety measures into place, and supporting families in need. Risk management continues to be a focus for the Finance and Risk Committee. The school engaged a risk management consultant to review its enterprise risk management program. The project involved 24 employees from across the organization, which resulted in an increased awareness. Action plans have been developed to proactively manage risks such as student mental health, leadership succession, allegations against employees, accidents during pickup and drop o , and cyber crime. As you’ve seen when driving onto campus, the new Junior School wing (18,000 square feet) is well underway. While there have been some challenges related to rising costs and delayed materials, the school, alongside the governance from the Building Committee, has worked to actively manage all aspects of the construction process and has diligently managed construction costs.I am pleased to report that CDS has exceeded the Building Magic campaign goal of $7 million. The support from our major donors and the entire community has been outstanding. The revitalized Junior School will celebrate the architectural blending of old and new and enclose the original 1883 Eversley Schoolhouse in an impressive new entranceway named Burns Hall. As a not-for-pro t corporation, the school sets a break-even operating budget and, this year, the net from school operations after the remote learning rebates was $138,000. This represents 0.6% of tuition revenue. Overall fund balances are at $51.3 million, consisting of $33.9 million in the Capital Fund, $8.5 million in the Endowment Fund, and $8.9 million in the Operating Fund. The total excess of revenue over expenses, including fundraising (allocated to the Building Magic campaign) and investment income, was $1,971,000 for the year ended June 30, 2022. This includes Building Magic campaign net donations of $1,366,000 and new student enrolment fees of $432,000. This year, there was a net loss on the Endowment Fund of $114,160 (included in “Investment income”), compared to a net gain of $1,442,290 in the prior year. I would like to thank the members of the Finance and Risk Committee for their dedication and expertise: Karen Adams, Luis Chacin, Nadia Chychrun, Basheer Khan, Tina Mithra and Jamie Wakeam. 8 The Country Day SchoolAn endowment is a fund that holds invest-ments in perpetuity as a source of income. It provides an inspirational opportunity for our families to support an area of interest in The Country Day School forever. Families may support areas within the school by donating to an existing fund, many of which are named in honour of donors and former members of faculty and sta , as well as alumni we have lost far too soon.Endowment funds provide meaningful support for the school and its community by diversifying the student population, adding a humanizing touch by extending support to families who have had their circumstances change mid-way through the educational experience, and helping to fund programs such as hosting visiting experts in academic, artistic and athletic disciplines.CDS currently has funds that support scholarships and bursaries, athletics, music, sta development and training, computer science/robotics, drama, and beauti cation/green initiatives. We report individual named funds as the book value (principal donations and preserving the capital interest adjust-ments) and the overall total endowment as the Fair Market Value (re ecting market  uctuations). The Country Day School also has a num-ber of general funds and an anonymous fund that provide support for the school’s areas of highest priority and the Scholarship/Bursary Program. Funds donated throughout the year toward a speci c area of support and directed to the CDS Endowment are added to an exist-ing fund that supports the same area. Newly named funds are eligible to be established with a minimum gift of $25,000, though the funds can be pledged over many years. If you have an idea or would like to learn more about starting a fund, I would be pleased to speak with you anytime. For the past two years, we missed out on so many in-person community gatherings and parent volunteer opportunities, including the Holiday Fair, guest speakers, our Parent Association tent at the Welcome Back BBQ, and of course, the CDS annual Auction. At each meeting we held our collective breath and hoped that restrictions would lift just enough so that we could do something.Of course, we understood. This was the way it had to be to keep our friends and family safe, but we are human and the desire to  nd a better way or another path pushed us forward. And so, in the spirit of countless Parent Associations before us, we hosted our  rst outdoor pre-owned clothing sale in April, which was a hit. The Sta Appreciation Breakfast returned, and we recorded our thanks virtually. Grade Parents began hosting outdoor walks and co ee mornings, and when indoor dining opened, that became an option too. We were  nally coming together again, and it was glorious. This spring, things really began to look up when we were welcomed back into the school to watch our children perform in the Junior and Middle/Senior concerts. I don’t know about you, but I think the odd tear was shed for the squeaky clarinets as much as for the fact that I was once again sitting shoulder to shoulder with other proud parents. As President, I have been proud to lead the Association this year. Once again, we pulled together and kept the spirit of community building and engagement going. We tended the small  ame, and we are ready to pass it on.The incoming Parent Association President for 2022-23 is Emily Delaney, mother of Teagan in Grade 5. Emily has been involved at CDS since day one,  rst as a Grade Parent and then joining the Parent Association as Grade Parent Coordinator in 2019. For those who know Emily, she has the heart of a volunteer and serving her commu-nity is what she does best. You see this not only in her work here, but also in her career working for Habitat for Humanity and, most recently, as the Fund Development Manager for Jack.org.Finally, to all our new parent volunteers and executive members, welcome to this amazing group of parents. We continue to look forward to working as a team with each of you and making the upcoming school year another huge success!Maricke EmanoilidisParent Association President, 2021–2022CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS! Always quick with a smile and to lend a hand, Paul was a  xture at the Welcome Back BBQ and other parent events as well as a reliable volunteer in setting up many a CDS Auc-tion. Whenever an item needed assem-bling, Paul was there with his toolkit.Sadly, Paul passed away in November 2021. In early 2022, the Easthope and Oletic families began exploring opportu-nities to support Paul’s beloved school and immediately connected with the Junior School Building Magic campaign, since Tyler had attended CDS from JK to Grade 10.With gifts from Paul’s estate and from his wife Doris Easthope, daughter Kimberly Easthope and grandson Tyler, the family established the Paul Easthope Meeting Room in the new Junior School wing. It will be a place for teachers to meet with families and one another to engage in fruitful discussions and healthy exchanges—just what Paul enjoyed do-ing every time he stepped onto campus.CDSFamily EndowmentGiftsAnnual Giving

Instead of 1972, he and his family chose to match the team number of 4951 with the hope that other Robotics alumni team members would be inspiredto make their own donations in the form $49.51, $495.10 or $4951.Collectively, these initial gifts and any subsequent gifts areto support the team in purchasing items that will assist in their competition setup—akin to a Formula 1 pit stop in auto racing terms—such as modular storage units and additional tools like drills and a band saw.“In doing this, our hope is that Robotics students can  nd a way to continue to build upon the program going forward. Maybe upon graduation, they will consider donat-ing $49.51 as alumni of FRC,” said Nancy Sutherland. “Collectively, gifts this size can make an impact.”Graduates of FRC and the CDS Robotics Team, please consider making a contribution of 4951 to the Robotics program upon gradu-ation. It’s not too late!CDSFamily EndowmentGifts

As the fund grows, it will also provide opportunities for enhanc-ing the CDS Computer Science program through improved hardware and software to further encourage student learning. Fi-nally, the Ian Sokullu Endowment Fund will provide additional funding to the Robotics program when available. All three goals align with Ian’s passion for Computer Science and Robotics, both as a CDS student and during his  rst year at the University of Waterloo. Please consider making a gift to the Ian Sokullu Endowment Fund in his memory.CDSFamily EndowmentGiftsAnnual GivingQuestions about how to donate?
