2 The Country Day Schoolfuture and enter through the new Junior School front doors. You will see our magnifi cent one-room Eversley Schoolhouse in all its glory—fully enclosed in the breathtakingly beautiful new Burns Family Hall. Continue on and tour the new primary wing and more. Yes, it took two years longer than planned due to pandemic delays, but WOW is it ever worth it!Finally, we are incredibly fortunate to have such a dedicated group of volunteer direc-tors who have moved mountains and gener-ously given their time and fi nancial support to achieve this spectacular result in the face of unexpected obstacles. I would like to thank departing board members David Myers, Ben Scholten and Katie Shotbolt for their years of service and welcome our new Board members: Charley Butler, Craig D’Souza, David Reid and Celine Yuan.We continue to build upon the four pillars of our long-range plan. I am pleased to report that our fi nancial stability, risk management and governance also remain strong. e highlight of my three years as Chair was working with an incredibly generous and engaged board, a very capable and caring leadership team, a highly dedicated group of faculty and staff , and one of the best Heads of School in Canada.  ank you all for the ongoing passion you exhibit every day in delivering the highest quality education with balance for our students.KAREN ADAMSAlumni Parent ’18 & ’20Chair, Board of DirectorsAFTER SOME FITS AND STARTS thanks to a global pandemic, I am pleased to report that  e Country Day School pulled off its 50th anniversary with fl air, off ering something for everyone. What a year to culminate my term as Board Chair. It has been an absolute honour to serve this wonderful community and be part of its magnifi cent journey. We kicked off the school year with a record-breaking turnout for our Welcome Back BBQ marking the start of CDS’s 50th with great fanfare. Next up, we celebrated our Founders and founding families with an intimate dinner with those who helped make this school a real-ity and with remarks sent from afar from those who could not be present.  e school’s half-century milestone contin-ued to remain top of mind throughout the year, with branded events, including mini-alumni and parent events, and CDS swag and driveway banners celebrating the phenomenal accom-plishments of our alumni. In June, we hosted the largest and most successful Dinner and Auction on record, with a sold-out crowd and the highest amount ever raised—$301,000! Two weeks later, we hosted 400 alumni at a 50th Alumni Luau, another record attendance for a CDS alumni event. We also experienced our share of loss, losing two very special founders and friends in Michael Burns, who passed away in June, and Moff at Dunlap, who passed away in September.  at CDS is recognized as one of Canada’s leading independent schools today is largely thanks to both men’s vision and generosity shown over the past 50 years. A perfect fi nale to the anniversary year was witnessed at the grand opening of the reju-venated Junior School—what our most recent Building Magic campaign successfully funded. For those who have not yet seen this architec-tural feat, I encourage you to stop by in the near MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD CDS Turns 51 and We’re Still Having FunMembers of the Board of Directors, including Chair Karen Adams and Basheer Khan, were on hand passing out dinners for faculty and sta last December.

4 The Country Day SchoolTHIS YEAR, WE WERE ABLE to complete the Building Magic Campaign in support of the rejuvenation of our Junior School. And what a truly unique and inspiring framework we have been able to provide for our community. e Junior School, already a loved and inspiring place, has now become — truly magical!  e classrooms and spaces are purpose built and class leading.  e light-fi lled hallways and cozy corners are warm and inviting. And the preserva-tion of our 1883 Eversley Schoolhouse within the Burns Family Hall is the ultimate preservation of  e Country Day School’s heritage. As a school that is renowned for its sense of community, how fi tting that the lead donor to this project was the late Michael Burns, one of the school’s founders, a beloved grandfather, a past parent and a past Board Chair.But then, when one of our last gi s to the Building Magic Campaign was in honour of the late Paul East-hope, yet another grandfather and friend, whose generosity put us over our $7 million goal, we knew that there truly is a magical community at  e Country Day School. How fi tting that our next Grandparents’ Day may be held in this new venue, where the spirits of these two very special people soar high.It is with profound sadness that neither of these fi ne men were able to see the fi nal product of their generosity at our grand opening event on September 7th. However, I fi nd comfort in knowing that their children and grandchildren were able to bear witness to the immense sense of pride these men felt toward CDS and le in their legacy. To ALL of our generous community members, thank you for your continued support and care for our school and for continuing the legacy of connectedness here at CDS. For those who have not yet seen the fi nished Burns Family Hall and new wing in the Junior School, I encourage you to stop by the next time you are driving past and come inside to have a look. We would love to show you around.JOHN LIGGETTHead of SchoolMESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Acknowledging the Generosity of Two Grandfathers“The Junior School, already a loved and inspiring place, has nowbecome—truly magical! The classrooms and spaces are purpose built and class leading. 2023 Annual Report 5“It was here in this one-room schoolhouse, which Mr. Burns helped broker for us at Auction in 1978, that I said to Michael in 2018 ‘Wouldn’t it be be magical, if we could protect and save this beautiful one-room schoolhouse that you procured for us all that time ago—for years to come?’ He saw the magic in the story—the story he wrote the fi rst pages of 50 years ago. And he dreamt the dream again with us and became our lead donor. ” John Liggett, Head of School John Liggett tours attendees of the October 2022 Founders Dinner “behind the scenes” of the Building Magic campaign site, including the new primary wing.

Many of our major donors were in attendance at the Grand Opening, including current parents Ben and Sarah (Fordham) Powell ‘96 whose gift supported the Powell Family Fireplace in the Burns Family Hall; past CDS parent Kimberly Easthope and Tyler Easthope-Oletic ‘23 who donated in honour of their late father and grandfather and beloved CDS volunteer, Paul Easthope; and current CDS parent Mike Hammer, a contemporary abstract artist who donated three paintings on display in the Ghezzi Family Walkway. Michael Burns’ spirit continues to be felt in the new Burns Family Hall. His daughter, Shelly Burns ‘80, helped cut the ribbon on September 7th, and his granddaughter, Lauren Kirton ‘23, got to see the building before leaving for university in August. The three are pictured here in a photo taken in the Junior School Library in 2019. 7

16 The Country Day SchoolFINANCIAL REPORT CDS’s Growth Stems fromExtraordinary Community Support WE SPENT THE 202223 YEARcelebrating  e Country Day School’s 50th golden anniversary! We looked back on the history of the school and recounted stories of how the founding families, the Board of Directors, Heads of School and all faculty and staff led CDS through incredible growth and change. Upon looking back, we can truly appreciate all that CDS has to off er.  ere is much to celebrate at CDS today: student and alumni successes, excellence in teaching, exceptional board and school leader-ship, and a fi rst-class campus.  e Endowment Fund is more than $9 million, student enrol-ment and number of employees are at record highs, and  e Country Day School reputa-tion is growing not only in York Region, but throughout Canada.  is year, the school also celebrated the opening of the new Junior School wing, the stunning Burns Family Hall and the renova-tion of the fabulous century schoolhouse, with a total project cost under $16 million. Our lead donors and generous community funded 53% of the project with an incredible $8.4 million raised from the Building Magic Campaign.  e balance of funds came from a $3 million bank loan and cash reserves. As we look back on all of the building projects over the last 50 years, we can’t help but marvel that  e Country Day School would not be where it is today without the support of all of the extraordinary lead donors and the CDS community.  is year the Finance and Risk Committee continued to focus on the long-range plan pil-lar “Enhancing Financial Stability.”  e com-mittee oversaw the development of a fi ve-year strategic fi nancial plan and Eberts’ Endowment scholarship plan which will broaden student diversity and mission appropriate students.  e committee plays an important role ensuring the school protects against identifi ed risks, such as construction, succession and cyber security risks and prepares for managing crises.  is important work will ensure continued success for the next decade and beyond. e school shows a defi cit from school operations of $1,033,000 for the year ended June 30, 2023. It is important to note that this was a planned defi cit and the school chose to utilize interest earned on operating cash and cash reserves to fund operating expenses this year, rather than through a further increase in tuition fees.  e school maintains a strong fi -nancial position and the total excess of revenue over expenses was $2,335,000.  is includes net fundraising revenue of $1,640,000, net investment income on the Endowment Fund of $633,000, interest earned on operating cash of $706,000, enrolment fee revenue of $448,000 and other expenses of $59,000. Overall fund balances are at $53.7 million, consisting of $37.2 million in the Capital Fund, $9.0 million in the Endowment Fund, and $7.5 million in the Operating Fund. I would like to thank the members of the Finance and Risk Committee for their consid-erable expertise and oversight: Karen Adams, Luis Chacin, Basheer Khan, Tina Mithra, Jamie Wakeam, and Glen Way. A special thank you to Building Committee Chair Basheer Khan for his leadership and dedication throughout the construction project.KATIE SHOTBOLT, CPA, CA, BCommCDS Alumna ’07Chair, Finance & Risk Committee“As we look back on all of the building projects over the last 50 years, we can’t help but marvel that The Country Day School would not be where it is today without the support of all of the extraordinary lead donors and the CDS community.”

18 The Country Day SchoolAN ENDOWMENT IS A FUND that holds investments in per-petuity as a source of income. It provides an inspirational opportunity for our families to support an area of interest in  e Country Day School forever. Families may sup-port areas within the school by donating to an existing fund, many of which are named in honour of donors and former members of faculty and staff , as well as alumni we have lost far too soon.Endowment funds provide meaningful support for the school and its community by diversifying the student population, adding a humanizing touch by extending support to families who have had their circumstances change mid-way through the educational experience, and helping to fund programs such as hosting visiting experts in academic, artistic and athletic disciplines.CDS currently has funds that support scholarships and bursaries, athletics, music, staff development and training, computer science/robotics, drama, and beautifi cation/green initiatives. We report individual named funds as the book value (principal donations and preserving the capital interest adjustments) and the overall total en-dowment as the Fair Market Value (refl ecting market fl uctuations). e Country Day School also has a number of general funds and an anonymous fund that provide support for the school’s areas of highest priority and the Scholarship/Bursary Program. Funds donated throughout the year toward a specifi c area of support and directed to the CDS Endowment are added to an existing fund that supports the same area. Newly named funds are eligible to be established with a minimum gi of $25,000, though the funds can be pledged over many years. If you have an idea or would like to learn more about starting a fund, I would be pleased to speak with you anytime.
