DEAR FRIENDS OF THE CCO Your support ensured that 2019 was a year of excitement and growth as we celebrated our 45th anniversary season in style Maestro Eckart Preu crafted a year of programming that brought about new music new venues and new partnerships Thank you for the part you played in helping us increase single ticket sales by over 15 and subscription sales by over 25 Without you subscribers donors volunteers Board members supporters patrons and friends the successes detailed in the following pages would not have been possible Eckart and the musicians ensured that Summermusik 2019 was another inventive engaging and collaborative season that put CCO audiences and music into even more venues across Greater Cincinnati Our second annual MusikArt collaboration with Wash Park Art Gallery featured original works by several local artists who brought our Summermusik festival to life through their beautiful artworks From musical premieres to our second sold out Mainstage Summermusik performance last season was another incredible season of firsts Because of your strong support we were able to continue our tradition of presenting unique collaborations on stage collaborations with visual artists from Liquid Video Solutions Cincinnati Nature Center Cincinnati Shakespeare Company Cincinnati Parks and Cincinnati Caledonian Pipes Drums Band the return of our acclaimed MicroBrass Fretboard beer a culinary journey to France with The Metropolitan Club and another film screening with Esquire Theatre In the fall we revisited our longstanding partnership with VAE Vocal Arts Ensemble Eckart led the combined ensembles for the first time in a sold out concert at Christ Church Cathedral In addition to works by Vivaldi and Faur we premiered a new arrangement of a beautiful Vaughan Williams work that featured a soaring soprano saxophone Beyond the stage your generosity throughout the year enables the CCO to continue making music accessible to all members of our community In 2019 CCO musicians took music into the community through programs from the Ronald McDonald House and City Gospel Mission to free outdoor concerts at local parks to several performances at libraries across Greater Cincinnati Thank you to our donors both new and returning for continuing to believe in the CCO and recognizing the value of affordable cultural and musical experiences to our community Thank you to the CCO s 2019 Board of Trustees for their vision and leadership in another year of record growth We know that 2020 has turned out differently than we had all hoped for but we are already looking forward to the exciting future of the CCO when we return with Summermusik in 2021 Thank you for continuing to believe in the impact we have in our community Stay safe and we look forward to bringing you our engaging and impactful musical programs soon LeAnne Anklan Executive Director Terri R Abare CCO 2019 Board President

T H E C I N C I N NAT I C H A M B E R O RC H E S T R A B E L I E V E S I N taking a lead role in teaching children about the art of music We believe that as arts education diminishes in the school system it is increasingly important for performing arts organizations to step forward and mold the next generation of musicians and music lovers We accomplish this through a variety of different ways from year to year from attendance at open rehearsals one on one and group musical instruction participation in question and answer sessions with our performers and music director hands on instrument displays complimentary event tickets masterclasses career chats and side by side musical performances The Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra has an ongoing collaboration with Music for Youth in Cincinnati MYCincinnati an instrumental classical music program for children ages 7 13 located in East Price Hill Recognizing that MYCincinnati primarily offers large group instruction and performances the CCO enhances the program by providing individual and small group instruction giving students the chance to interact with a working professional musician as teacher and mentor CCO members visit MYCincinnati for several hours each week In January CCO principal clarinetist John Kurokawa crafted a specialized program in celebration of the Holocaust Humanities Center s opening at Cincinnati Union Terminal In May the CCO strings and winds performed a side by side concert with MYCincinnati at the MYCincinnati Firehouse above In June CCO principal flutist Rebecca Andres visited Catholic Charities World Refugee Day event to show guests of all ages how to make a sound on a flute left During the summer festival our guest artists and conductors often lead masterclasses across the Tri State including Julian Bliss s visit to SCPA photo on page 3 and the Silver Garburg Duo s visit to Northern Kentucky University We believe music education is important for the musically curious of all ages That is why we include fun and interesting facts in our concerts whether during our pre concert Prelude Talks above music director comments delivered from the stage or a chance for audience members to meet the musicians following each performance

SUMMERMUSIK AUD IEN C E QUOT ES The concert series is a jewel in the musical offerings in the city The performance itself was superb but I wouldn t expect anything else from CCO Always great and filled with unique personality and artistry Summermusik is probably my most enjoyable cultural experience in Cincinnati FANTASTIC CONCERTS MY FAVORITE ORCHESTRA This was one of the most outstanding musical performances I have attended in the last five years maybe ever

SUMMERMUSIK AUD IEN C E QUOT ES We haven t had that much fun in ages The whole evening was fabulous fun fun fun Simply remarkable and the intimacy of the setting made it that much more magical This is the highlight of my year VAE AUD IEN C E QUOT ES This concert was unreal with how amazing it was As a multi season VAE subscriber it was one of the best performances I ve heard The combined talents led to an extraordinary experience

CCO has come alive with Eckart Preu s leadership Love the new direction and the energy and enthusiasm shown by the music and the musicians CCO PATRON SUMMERMUSIK AUD IEN C E QUOT ES SUMMERMUSIK P R ESS QUOT ES Unafraid to take risks the 32 piece Chamber Orchestra including its hands on board has invented one of the most creative and innovative classical music experiences in the region JANELLE GELFAND Cincinnati Business Courier But Eckart Preu kept things ebbing and flowing with his genial but firm command of his forces The young maestro moves comfortably from the film music of Nyman and the New Age sounds of Enaudi to the atonalism of Zivkovic and on to the Baroque elegance of Vivaldi Torelli and Handel That alone qualifies him in most books and certainly in mine as a conductor to take notice of Cincinnati has noticed and embraced him RAFAEL de ACHA Rafael s Music Notes If only streaming music could recreate a live performance of Pepe and the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra I found myself closing my eyes as well giving myself to the music JOHN DAVID BACK ArtsWave Preu and the orchestra were vibrant partners in this memorable performance JANELLE GELFAND Cincinnati Business Courier During the dog days of August the fully blossomed Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra once more brought to Cincinnati s music lovers a plentiful supply of world class soloists up and coming young artists and the playing of a cohesive disciplined and fluent ensemble made up of some of the best musicians in these parts led by the never predictable ever reliable Eckart Preu in off the beaten path programs that surprised and stimulated both brain and heart The CCO has carved a unique place in the Queen City s musical landscape RAFAEL de ACHA Rafael s Music Notes

A NOTE FROM ECKART Dear CCO family Summermusik 2019 was another example of why I love the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra family so much it was colorful innovative exciting musically satisfying and just plain fun The audience enjoyed themselves ticket sales were excellent and the orchestra performances were top notch The highlight of the festival for me however was our third Mainstage performance ESPA A I am a big fan of the fiery music inspired by Spain and the flamenco and the fantastic performance of the legendary Pepe Romero made it a night to remember inset right There were many additional noteworthy performances by flamenco dancer Arleen Hurtado vocalist and palmero Gabriel Osuna bagpiper Karen May and Tomas Lozano playing his self built hurdy gurdy that enhanced the Mainstage concerts I loved the artistry of all of our stellar guest artists percussionist Nebojsa Jovan Zivkovic the Silver Garburg Piano Duo and clarinetist Julian Bliss There were so many extraordinary memories associated with Summermusik 2019 Collaborations with other arts organizations are a cornerstone of the artistic fabric of the CCO Our sold out October concert in partnership with VAE Vocal Arts Ensemble featured the beautiful world premiere of a new version of Vaughan Williams Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis I look forward to the next time we are able to partner with this extraordinary group Congratulations to all members of the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra for another stellar year It has been an honor to lead the ensemble and I am thrilled that my contract with the orchestra was renewed for another 3 years We cannot wait until we are able to create unique and memorable experiences for all of you again Eckart Preu Music Director
