DEAR FRIENDS Welcome to Summermusik 2017 I am thrilled to be the new music director of the phenomenal Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra and am looking forward to our first festival together I am excited to share our programs thoughts and passion We want to delight you surprise you and create moments to remember There are three different formats concerts with full orchestra the more intimate A Little Afternoon Music matinees and the highly successful Chamber Crawl series that features original pairings of music with food and drink Each series has a very different format feel and identity and we hope to see you at all of them The main orchestra series is designed to provide four very different concert experiences We begin with a trip to an unlikely musical destination Scotland which has inspired composers with its amazing landscapes songs and instruments Warning there will be surprises along the way Angelo Xiang Yu will be performing the third violin concerto by Mozart whose music and influence will be present at all programs and will provide continuity in the midst of our adventurous mix of discovery and rediscovery Our journey continues with a Celestial Voyage with music ranging from the truly shocking beginning of Chaos by French Baroque composer Jean F ry Rebel to a new commission inspired by Kepler s Music of the Spheres and recorded sounds of the universe Dean Regas from Cincinnati Observatory will be our guide Israeli pianist and Cincinnati resident Ran Dank will render a dazzling account of Saint Sa ns second piano concerto The focal point of our third program is the magical city of Venice We will trace its musical history and inspiration from the 16th to the 20th centuries The imaginative puppeteers of Madcap will create a colorful story based on characters of the famed Commedia dell arte One of the strongest creative forces is love We will explore the passion strength and elusiveness of love in our last program which will culminate with the eighth symphony by Beethoven Our collaborative partner will be MamLuft Co Dance who will merge sound and gesture with mesmerizing and hypnotizing music by Glass and Silvestrov Pianist Alon Goldstein will join us to perform Mozart s twentieth piano concerto as well as a combined work with MamLuft I am delighted to share responsibilities of curating the Chamber Crawl and A Little Afternoon Musik series with the musicians of the CCO and our guest artists Their creative input keeps these series colorful fresh and unique Enjoy listening to great works for chamber music in non traditional intimate settings often while doing what the great composers did before we put them on a pedestal eat and drink Please join the fantastic musicians of the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra and me for a month of joyful music making See you soon great music awaits ECKART PREU 2 S U M M E R M U S I K F E S T I VA L 2 0 1 7
