You need food for the winter, too. It will be very cold.” The grasshopper says, “No problem. There is a lot of food everywhere.” The ant continues to work, and the grasshopper continues to play and relax. Fall comes, and the grasshopper looks everywhere but he cannot find any food. Then winter comes, and he is very cold and very hungry. He goes to the ant’s nest to ask for food. The grasshopper says, “May I have some food, please?” The ant says, “I worked hard in the summer and fall to find food. All you did was play, play, play. But I will give you a little bit of food.” The grasshopper says, “Thank you very much.” The grasshopper has a little bit of food, but he is cold and hungry all winter long. When the spring comes, the grasshopper decides to work hard to find food for the winter. Get it done, then have fun!

54The Old Woman and the Pig Once upon a time, an old woman finds a coin. “What can I do with this coin?” she says. “I know! I can go to the market and buy a little pig.” She goes to the market and buys a little pig. She walks home and comes to the gate. But the little pig won’t jump over the gate. So she walks a little further and she sees a dog. “Dog, dog, bite the pig! The pig won’t jump over the gate and I won’t get home tonight.” But the dog won’t bite the pig. So she walks a little further and she sees a stick. “Stick, stick, hit the dog! The dog won’t bite the pig, the pig won’t jump over the gate and I won’t get home tonight.” But the stick won’t hit the dog. So she walks a little further and she sees a fire. “Fire, fire, burn the stick! The stick won’t hit the dog, the dog won’t bite the pig, the pig won’t jump over the gate and I won’t get home tonight.” But the fire won’t burn the stick. So she walks a little further and she sees some water. “Water, water, put out the fire. The fire won’t burn the stick, the stick won’t hit the dog, the dog won’t bite the pig, the pig won’t jump over the gate and I won’t get home tonight.” But the water won’t put out the fire. So she walks a little further and she sees a cow. “Cow, cow, drink the water! The water won’t put out the fire, the fire won’t burn the stick, the stick won’t hit the dog, the dog won’t bite the pig, the pig won’t jump over the gate and I won’t get home tonight.” But the cow won’t drink the water. So she walks a little further and she sees a cowboy. “Cowboy, cowboy, catch the cow! The cow won’t drink the water, the water won’t put out the fire, the fire won’t burn the stick, the stick won’t hit the dog, the dog

So she walks a little further and she sees a rope. “Rope, rope, tie up the cowboy! The cowboy won’t catch the cow, the cow won’t drink the water, the water won’t put out the fire, the fire won’t burn the stick, the stick won’t hit the dog, the dog won’t bite the pig, the pig won’t jump over the gate and I won’t get home tonight.” But the rope won’t tie up the cowboy. So she walks a little further and she sees a rat. “Rat, rat, chew the rope! The rope won’t tie up the cowboy, the cowboy won’t catch the cow, the cow won’t drink the water, the water won’t put out the fire, the fire won’t burn the stick, the stick won’t hit the dog, the dog won’t bite the pig, the pig won’t jump over the gate and I won’t get home tonight.” But the rat won’t chew the rope. So she walks a little further and she sees a cat. “Cat, cat, chase the rat! The rat won’t chew the rope, the rope won’t tie up the cowboy, the cowboy won’t catch the cow, the cow won’t drink the water, the water won’t put out the fire, the fire won’t burn the stick, the stick won’t hit the dog, the dog won’t bite the pig, the pig won’t jump over the gate and I won’t get home tonight.” And the cat said, “I will chase the rat if you will get me some milk.” So the old woman gets the cat some milk. Then the cat begins to chase the rat, the rat begins to chew the rope, the rope begins to tie up the cowboy, the cowboy begins to catch the cow, the cow begins to drink the water, the water begins to put out the fire, the fire begins to burn the stick, the stick begins to hit the dog, the dog begins to bite the pig, the pig jumps over the gate, and the old woman gets home that night.
