12Two Cats and a Monkey Once upon a time, there are two cats. They are very good friends. One day, they are very hungry. They look everywhere to find food. Suddenly, they smell something very good. It is a cake! They steal the cake and run away. They find a tree and sit under it. The cats divide the cake into two pieces. But the pieces are not equal. One is bigger than the other. Both cats want to have the bigger piece. So they begin to argue and yell at each other. A monkey sees the cats. He goes to them and says, “What’s wrong?” One cat says, “He wants to have the bigger piece.” The monkey has an idea. He says, “I can help you make the pieces equal.” The two cats agree. The monkey takes out a scale. He weighs the two pieces. One piece is heavier. So the monkey takes a bite out of the heavier piece. Now the other piece is heavier! So he takes a bite out of that one. The monkey keeps eating the two pieces of cake to make them equal. The two cats sit and watch the monkey. They trust he is a good judge. But, finally, the whole cake has been eaten by the monkey! The monkey smiles and says, “Now you don’t need to argue over the bigger piece anymore! There is no more cake left.” And the monkey walks away happy…and full!

18The Tortoise and the Geese Once upon a time, there is a tortoise and two geese. They live together in a pond. They are good friends. One summer, it did not rain for many days. The water in the pond dried up. One of the geese says, “We should find a new home. We need water. Let’s say goodbye to the tortoise.” The tortoise is very sad. He says, “Please, stay here or take me with you.” But the geese say, “If we stay here, we will all die. And you cannot come with us because you cannot fly.” The tortoise begs, “Please, please, please!” One of the geese has an idea. He says, “If you promise not to speak while we are flying, we will take you with us. If you open your mouth, you will fall to your death.” The tortoise says, “Okay, I promise. I will be silent until we are back on the ground.” So, the geese find a big, strong stick. They tell the tortoise to grab it firmly with his mouth. Then they take hold of either end and fly off. After a while, they fly over a village. The people look up and see a tortoise being carried by two geese! The people begin to laugh and yell, “They look so funny!” The tortoise is embarrassed. He is angry. Finally, he wants to tell the people why they are flying. But when the tortoise opens his mouth, he falls to the ground. His shell breaks! The geese take him to a vet. The vet tells the tortoise he needs to rest for many days. The geese say goodbye to the tortoise and fly away to find a new home.

30How the Bear Lost His Tail Once upon a time, Bear has a beautiful, long, furry tail. He asks everyone, “Don’t you think my tail is the most beautiful tail?” Everyone thinks Bear is vain but they are scared of his big claws and they say his tail is very beautiful. One cold winter day, Bear walks to the frozen lake. Fox is on the lake. He has a big pile of fish. He knows that Bear is hungry and wants to play a trick on him. “Hello Fox,” says Bear, “Where did you get all those fish?” “I caught them,” says Fox, “From that hole in the ice.” “But you don’t have anything to fish with,” says Bear. “I used my tail,” says Fox. Bear is surprised and says, “You used your tail?!” “Yes, I did. It’s easy. Do you want me to teach you how to fish with your tail? You can catch many fish,” says Fox. “Yes, please!” says Bear. His mouth waters and his stomach growls.

Page 33

31Fox takes Bear to a shallow part of the lake. Fox tells Bear to dig a hole in the ice with his claws. Fox says, “Now sit down and put your tail into the water. When you feel a fish bite, pull out your tail with the fish on the end of it.” Bear puts his tail into the cold water. Fox says, “You must sit still and think about the fish. Pretend to count the fish. The more you count, the more you will catch.” Bear sits very still and thinks about the fish. He counts each one. It is very tiring. He falls asleep. Fox goes to his den with his fish. He comes back a few hours later. Bear is still asleep. Fox laughs, “This is such a funny trick!” Fox sneaks up on Bear. He yells, “Bear! Bear! There’s a fish on your tail!” Bear wakes up and feels a pain in his tail. He jumps up and his frozen tail snaps off! All that is left is a small, little tail. “My tail! My beautiful tail!” cries Bear. Bear is angry and tries to catch Fox. But Fox laughs and runs away. And that’s why bears only have a short tail now.

36The Cracked Pot Once upon a time, there is a farmer. Every day, he walks very far to a small stream to get water. He has two large pots to put the water in. He hangs the two pots on a long pole. Then he carries the pole on his shoulders. The pots are old. But one pot still looks new. It’s the perfect pot. The other pot has a big crack in it. It’s the cracked pot. When the farmer walks home, the perfect pot does not spill any water. But the cracked pot spills half its water on the path. The perfect pot is proud that it can carry all the water home. The cracked pot is ashamed that it can carry only half the water home. The cracked pot thinks to itself, “The farmer is so kind to me but I fail him every day. Tomorrow I will say sorry to him.” The next day, the cracked pot says to the farmer, “I’m sorry that I’m a cracked pot.” The farmer says, “I know you are a cracked pot.” The cracked pot says, “I’m ashamed that I can carry only half the water home.” The farmer says, “Do you see the beautiful flowers on the path when we walk home?” The cracked pot says, “Yes, there are many beautiful flowers.” The farmer says, “I planted the flower seeds. And every day we walk home, you give water to the flowers. This way the flowers can grow and make everyone happy. Cracked pot, you are perfect the way you are.”

Page 39

Read this passage. Then answer the questions. The Cracked Pot 1 There was once a woman who walked to the well each day to fetch water. She carried two pots over her shoulders on either end of a long stick. When she got to the well, she filled both pots with water. Then she returned home. 2 The pots looked exactly the same, but one pot had a crack. The pot with no crack thought he was the best and most beautiful of all. He often laughed at the cracked pot and said unkind things. 3 One night when the woman was asleep, the pot with no crack boasted to the other. “I am perfect,” he snickered, “but you are flawed.” 4 “Flawed?” said the cracked pot. “What do you mean?” continued33Name _____________________________________________ Date ___________________CA1502_ASMT_G4_U2.indd 33 9/17/19 10:21 AM37theCrackedpot

The other children are still laughing at him. The king says, “Be quiet, everyone! The name of your new king is…Liam!” Everyone is shocked. Then the king says, “One year ago, I gave each of you a seed. I asked you to plant it, water it, and bring it back to me today. But I gave each of you a boiled seed that cannot grow. All of you have brought me plants and flowers. You have switched the seeds. Only Liam was honest and brought me a pot with my seed in it. That’s why he is the new king!” Word Search: Can you find all the words? 43

54The Grateful Statues Once upon a time, an old man and woman live in a small house in the mountains of Japan. They are very poor. Every day, they weave hats out of straw. The old man takes the hats to the village to sell. Soon it will be New Years. The old man and woman want to eat rice cakes to celebrate the new year. The old woman says, “After you sell these hats, could you buy some rice cakes in the village.” So the old man takes five hats and goes to the village. But no one wants to buy the hats. While the old man is walking home, it starts to snow. Suddenly, he sees six stone statues of Jizo. Jizo is the protector of children. The old man says, “These are stone statues of Jizo but they must be cold here covered in the snow.” One by one, the old man puts a hat on top of the statues. When he comes to the last statue, he has no more hats! So he takes off his own hat and puts it on the statue. Finally, the old man comes home and he tells his wife what happened. She says, “That was very kind of you. It’s better to do a kind thing than to have rice cakes.” The old man and woman go to sleep. While they are sleeping, there is singing: A kind old man walking in the snow, Gives all his hats to the stone Jizo, So they bring him gifts and then they go, Japanese rice cakes yo-hee-ho! The voices come closer and closer. Then there is a loud noise. “BOOMPF” The old man and woman wake up and open the door. They see the biggest and most beautiful rice cakes ever. “Who brought us this wonderful gift?” they wonder. Then, in the distance, they see six stone statues of Jizo wearing the hats and walking in the snow. The old woman says, “The stone statues of Jizo brought us this wonderful gift. You were kind to them and they were kind to us. Now we have delicious rice cakes to celebrate the New Year!”
