12The Four Dragons Once upon a time, there are no rivers and lakes on Earth, only the sea. Four dragons live there: the Long Dragon, the Yellow Dragon, the Black Dragon and the Pearl Dragon. One day, the four dragons fly in the sky. The Pearl Dragon sees an old woman kneeling on the ground. The old woman prays, “Please send rain. The crops need water or we will have no food to eat.” “The people are so poor!” says the Long Dragon. “Let’s ask the Jade Emperor for rain,” says the Yellow Dragon. The four dragons fly into the clouds to the Sky Palace. But the Jade Emperor is not happy to see the four dragons. “Why do you come here?” says the Jade Emperor. “The crops need water and the people have no food. Please send rain!” says the Black Dragon. “Alright, go back and I will send some rain tomorrow,” says the Jade Emperor. The four dragons go back to the sea. They wait for ten days but no rain comes. The people start to eat tree bark and grass. The four dragons are very sad. The Jade Emperor does not care about the people. “I have an idea!” says the Pearl Dragon. “There is a lot of water in the sea. We can scoop up the water and spray it in the sky. The water will be like rain!” “But the Jade Emperor will be angry,” says the Long Dragon. “We need to help the people. Let’s go!” shouts the Yellow Dragon as he flies away. The four dragons fly to the sea and scoop up water in their mouths. They fly high up into the sky and spray the water. The four dragons fly back and forth until the sky becomes dark. Then it starts to rain. “It’s raining! It’s raining! The crops will be saved!” cry the people and they jump with joy.

Page 15

13 But the Jade Emperor sees the rain and he is angry. His soldiers catch the four dragons and bring them to the Sky Palace. “I will bury you under four big mountains and you will never escape!” says the Jade Emperor. So the Jade Emperor buries the four dragons under four big mountains. But the four dragons want to help the people. And they turn themselves into four rivers. The rivers flow past the big mountains and bring the people the water they need. And so, China’s four great rivers were made: the Long River, the Yellow River in the middle, the Black River in the north, and the Pearl River in the south.

He thinks, “I am so beautiful, handsome, and strong. So MIGHTY!” He really wants to show the other animals that he is the king. The lion invites all the other animals to meet him in front of his palace. Then they can see how MIGHTY he is! Many animals come to see the lion. There are giraffes, hyenas, elephants, zebras and apes. A beetle, who is so little, also has come to see the lion. She has to be careful that the bigger animals do not step on her. She sings, “I am small. I am little. People look down and can’t see me. I am small. I am little. But inside, I’m tall as a tree!” The lion sees everyone in front of his palace. He roars, “I am your king!” And all the animals bow to him. Then the lion sees the little beetle. The lion says, “You there, Beetle, bow to me!” The beetle says, “Oh King, I am small and if you look a little closer you will see that I am bowing!” The lion goes to the beetle. He leans over to look down at her. But his heavy clothes – his robes, his crown, his jewelry, and all his gold and silver medals – make him so top-heavy that the lion wobbles. Suddenly, the lion loses his balance and he falls over! He rolls down a hill and into a muddy ditch. All the animals laugh and laugh. The lion is embarrassed. He is not so mighty after all.

48The Wolf and the Seven Kids Once upon a time, there is Mother Goat. She has seven little kids. One morning, she has to go to the market to buy food. She says to her seven kids, “I have to go to the market. Lock the door and if the wolf comes, don’t open it!” And off Mother Goat goes to the market. Soon, someone knocks on the door and says, “Hello kids, open the door. Mother is here!” But the little kids know it is the wolf’s voice. They say, “We will not open the door. You are not our mother. You are the wolf!” And the wolf leaves. Later the wolf comes back and knocks on the door. This time he says with a woman’s voice, “Hello kids, open the door, please. Mother is here!” The kids say, “Show us your paws!” The wolf knows that his paws are black and not white like Mother Goat’s. And so he leaves again. This time the wolf puts his paws in some flour to make them white. He knocks on the door and says, “Hello kids, open the door, please. Mother is here! Quickly, please!” And he shows his paws on the window. The kids think all is well and open the door. “Now I got you! I am going to eat all of you!” he shouts. The seven kids quickly hide in the house. One hides under the table. The second hides under the bed. The third hides in the tub. The fourth hides behind the curtain. The fifth hides in the cupboard. The sixth hides behind the sofa. The last one and youngest hides in the clock. But the wolf finds them and swallows them whole. Except for the youngest kid who is hiding in the clock. The wolf goes back home to take a nap.

Page 51

49Later that evening, Mother Goat comes home. The youngest kid tells her what happened. Mother Goat is very angry. She goes to the wolf’s house and brings scissors, a needle and thread. While the wolf is sleeping, Mother Goat cuts open the wolf’s stomach and out jump the six kids! Mother Goat tells the six kids to each find a big rock. They fill the wolf’s stomach with six big rocks and then Mother Goat sews up his stomach. When the wolf wakes up, he feels very thirsty. He goes to the well to drink some water. But when he leans over at the well to drink, the big rocks make him lose his balance and he falls into the well! The big rocks are so heavy that the wolf cannot swim and he drowns in the well.
