The Centre for Brain and Mind is acollaborative, premier research centrelaunched in 2023, focused onsupporting research on five mentaldisorders — schizophrenia, bipolardisorder, addiction, obsessive-compulsive disorder and dementia. With a partnership between NationalInstitute of Mental Health andNeurosciences (NIMHANS) and theNational Centre for Biological Sciences(NCBS), the centre integrates multitudeof technologies to understand thecomplexities of psychiatric disorders, towards development of earlydiagnostics and better treatment. Our ResearchOur clinicians conduct comprehensiveevaluations of patients’ behaviours andsymptomsPsychiatric screening assesses family history, charts hereditary traits & measures disorderseverity Neuropsychological tests evaluate cognitive skillsin individuals with & without psychiatricdisorders, considering their family historyClinical AssessmentsGenetic StudiesWe assess changes in DNA sequence inpsychiatric patients, their immediate relatives & inunrelated controls (people without a psychiatricdiagnosis)Understanding why & how these changes happencan help scientists understand how genetic risktranslates to diseaseMultimodal NeuroimagingWe use imaging techniques such as eye-movement tracking, functional near-infraredspectroscopy, MRIs and EEGsThese help us evaluate the structural changes inthe brain & its activity linked to psychiatricdiseasesStem Cell ResearchStem cells, developed from blood cells, are usedto investigate differences in brain cells duringdiseaseWe study whether these cells function differentlythan those of non-affected peopleBioinformaticsUsing powerful computers, we study differencesin the DNA of individuals with & withoutpsychiatric disorders in different populationsThis genetic information helps us find the cause& predict the chances of developing thesepsychiatric disorders
