As Call of the Sea celebrates 40 years of education under sail, we reflecton a year of record-breaking impact—expanding ocean access anddeepening environmental learning focused on Science, Technology,Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM). More than 5,000 young peoplewere introduced to the ocean and maritime education aboard ourtraditionally rigged tall ships, the brigantine Matthew Turner andschooner Seaward.Today, we are serving more students on more sails than ever before, including the Bay Area counties of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa,San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano and Sonoma. 2,000students in need received scholarships last year. 100% came fromunder-resourced schools, and 77% of these students were fromcommunities of color. One in four scholarship recipients have learningor physical challenges. All benefited from our unique hands-on learningprograms that expand their awareness of the ocean and our coastalcommunities.Marine science and conservation are central to our curriculum, connecting classroom concepts to real-world environmental challengeson the water. Understanding sea level rise, ocean acidification and theimportance of watersheds for protecting marine life is key to a moresustainable future. The opportunity to sail on a tall ship helps studentsconnect with the ocean and become better stewards of theirenvironment. Many of our programs are also open to students of all ages and everytime we leave the dock there is an opportunity to learn. In addition toour youth programs, this past year some 2,000 people joined Call of theSea on San Francisco Bay and beyond. During each sail our crew anddocents, from among our hundreds of volunteers, share their knowledgeof marine life, local lore and California’s seafaring heritage. This year Matthew Turner and Seaward each completed 240 sails—themost in our history. As we look ahead, our objectives are to:Expand opportunities for Bay Area youth in needSupport maritime training and career opportunitiesProvide multi-day voyages of discoveryWe believe that learning about the ocean and exploring our coastlineaboard a traditional sailing ship is an experience which cannot besurpassed. Our mission is to make this life-changing opportunityavailable to everyone.Carla ThorsonExecutive Director Our Greatest Impact Yet

The Power of Outdoor EducationBAY EXPLORATIONS: Three-hour Field TripsSEAS: Science, Engineering, Art & Sailing CAMPS: Sailing, Marine Science & Crafts “Our boys thoroughly enjoyed the camp. Thanks for all you did to inspireand engage the kids. It was hands down the best camp they have done.”A unique learning environment — San Francisco Bay and the California coastline are the classroom. Studentsbuild knowledge through experience, reflection, and guided inquiry.Teamwork — Sailing a tall ship is a group effort. Students develop skills in leadership and collaboration, learning to hoist and trim sails together, and maneuver the boat with the wind. Real world connections — Students are able to integrate environmental literacy, systems thinking, and datacollection—linking ocean health to current questions about sustainability and their own future. Environmental stewardship — By interweaving historical perspectives, present day challenges and futuresolutions, students see themselves as active participants in long-term environmental problem solving.Fun — Being outdoors, making friends, seeing marine mammals, fish and invertebrates up close helps buildlasting relationships with the natural world.“Grateful for this partnership and the work Call of the Sea does to make meaningful experiences accessible. Highly recommend this to anyone looking for connection, adventure, and a deeper appreciation of our Bay.”“The reason that we keep coming back year after year is the great crew andengaging learning experiences that our kids get while sailing. The crew isresponsive to all the kids, from the highly adventurous to the more timid.” “The field trip experience was fun, insightful and welcoming. Students were able to engage, ask questions andlearn new things. Students who aren’t always confident participated due to the crew modeling, setting anexpectation, encouraging and guiding them.”ALOFT: Sail Training TALL SHIP SKILLS: Seamanship & NavigationVOYAGES: Multi-day Near Coastal Sails“We were able to see the sea creatures and learn about how we can keepthe sea clean for them.”Programs:
