Message Knowledge Holder, Cultural Monitor and Mentor – Bummers Flats Wetland Restoration Project Application deadline is September 19, 2025. Contracting Opportunity: ʔaq̓am, Ducks Unlimited Canada, The Nature Trust of British Columbia, and the Ministry of Water, Lands and Resource Stewardship are seeking a cultural advisor to act as a mentor to an ʔaq̓am mentee, teaching environmental management practices on traditional and western sciences and implementing them into the restoration of North Bummers Marsh at Bummers Flats Conservation Complex, approximately 14 km north of Forte Steele. The successful candidate will work as a contractor for Ducks Unlimited Canada. Contract length and time commitment: Time commitment will involve a two to three-week construction period in the fall of 2025 performing on-site supervision for several hours per day during the work week. Specific dates of construction will be provided after hiring but the expected start date is the first week of October. Hours are flexible and can be negotiated. Contracting fees: The contractor will be paid $75/hour, inclusive of additional expenses. The successful contractor will be responsible for paying for their own expenses related to travel, phone bills, food, personal protective equipment, etc. Role: As the cultural monitor, you will provide cultural and environmental oversight to ensure design processes and outcomes are meeting Ktunaxa values and on-site construction recognizes ʔaq̓amnik̓ values and stewardship principles. You will work with the team and teach an ʔaq̓am mentee to integrate Indigenous Knowledge and values into the project and provide guidance during construction based on your knowledge of the land and species that use the areas. During construction, you will provide input on decisions and activities, and provide advice and teachings to a mentee, including protecting cultural and environmentally sensitive areas. You will also be required to attend several steering committee meetings online. The number of hours worked can be flexible and negotiated with the successful candidate.

Requirements: Must have a vehicle and driver’s license. Carpooling with the mentee is preferred. The successful candidate should be familiar with Bummers Flats and familiar with the Bummers Flats Restoration project and engagement thus far with the community and be interested in teaching about ʔaq̓amnik̓ values and stewardship principles. You will be responsible for bringing their own PPE. PPE requirements will be made available at orientation. Work Conditions: This position will work extensively outside, and work will continue in all safe weather conditions. The successful applicant must be comfortable working outdoors, with heavy equipment and in various weather conditions. Training will be provided to work at an active construction site, including daily tailgate Health and Safety meetings. Applicants: This job is open to ʔaq̓amnik̓ Knowledge Holders.
