September 13, 2024ד״פשת לולא ’י אצת יכ תשרפ HARNESS OUR ESSENCE 6:38 PMDear Parents,When one is liable to be punished with תוקלמ (flogging) due to transgressing specific negative commandments, ונכי םיעברא, his punishment is forty lashes. However, Chazal in the Mishna and the Gemara make a השרד based on the verbiage of the possuk that in actuality the transgressor is only flogged thirty-nine times, not forty. The Mefarshim wonder why the Torah seems to explicitly state forty and only through a השרד do we discover that the punishment is thirty-nine. Why doesn’t the Torah simply state the true number? The Maharal answers that from a certain perspective, the individual deserves to receive forty malkos and not thirty-nine. He bases this idea on the concept described by Rashi in Beraishis that the number forty corresponds to the forty formative days in which a child is conceived in the womb. As such, forty represents the totality of the person – his entire creation. Since the entire person was engaged in the הריבע, it would seem fitting that he should receive forty lashes. However, says Maharal, it was only the physical קלח of a person, formed over thirty-nine days that precipitated the sin. The Neshama of the person, which enters on the fortieth day of a person’s conception is pure. Therefore, although all forty ‘parts’ of a person deserves a lash, the fortieth ‘part’, the Neshama, was only pulled along and fell into bad company. It is only the ףוגה יקלח that deserve the punishment. This is a profound message of chizuk for us and for the transgressor. At the same time that the individual is being punished, he receives a powerful affirmation that although there are certainly areas he needs to improve, there is also a chelek within him that provides the strength and source of purity to enable improvement. At this time of year, it is important for us to focus on our essence – the המשנה קלח – and harness it properly in the service of Torah and Mitzvos, thereby pull the ףוג along with the המשנ and not ו״ח in reverse.!תבש טוג Rabbi Ochs● Tues, Sept 17 - 1-8B Back to school nightTues, Sept 24 - Preschool Back to School nightOct 2-4 - (Erev) Rosh Hashana, No schoolOct 11 - Erev Yom Kippur, No schoolOct 15- Oct 27 - Sukkos break, No school
