May 17, 2024ד״פשת רייא ’ט רומא תשרפ UNIQUE CHALLENGE 7:43 PMDear Parents,וימעב אמטי אל שפנל םהילא תרמאו םינהכה לא רומאSay to the Kohanim, and say to them – avoid becoming ritually impure through contact with a dead body.Rashi references the ארמג in תומבי which explains the double הרימא as an exhortation for the elder Kohanim to not only assimilate these תוכלה not to be תמ אמטמ themselves, but to warn and teach their children the same: םינטקה לע םילודג ריהזהלTwo other places in the Torah have a similar directive. When discussing the םיצרש (rodents), that possuk states םיליכאת אל – do not consume them. Chazal expound the verse to include preventing your children from consuming rodents. Similarly, when the Torah records the prohibition of ingesting blood, the possuk states: אל םדה לע ולכאת – Do not consume blood, and as Chazal expounds, םינטקה לע םילודג ריהזהל, do not allow your children to ingest blood either.The הרותל םינזא wonders why the second two prohibitions explained with םינטקה לע םילודג ריהזהל were dictated in a direct language – you shall not consume rodents, and you shall not consume blood – while תרמאו רמא was dictated with the expression הרימא, always considered a less strident form of speech – הכר ןושל.He explains that םינהכ had a unique challenge when being ךנחמ their children. They had to instruct their children to desist from certain activities that they saw all their other non-ןהכ playmates participating in with no issue at all! While their children’s friends could walk through a cemetery, their children were forbidden to do so, as the laws of האמוט and הרהט apply only to Kohanim.Regarding the םיניד of םיצרש and םד the message being transmitted to the children is identical across ללכ לארשי. Therefore, the very הביבס – environment – the children experience is one where consumption of blood and rodents is a non-negotiable רוסיא. There is no conflict between the message of the םילודג and the reality of the children’s daily experience. Thus, communicating the םירוסיא of םיצרשו םד תליכא was relatively simple, as the children’s הביבס aids in inculcating this message.Not so for the halachos of האמוט and הרהט that apply only to םינהכ. Their children’s reality was not one where the laws of האמוט and הרהט were followed – because their non-ןהכ playmates were not obligate to follow these םיניד. Thus, the message the םינטק םינהכ heard at home was in direct conflict with what they saw all their friends doing. The םינהכ needed to guide their children to act differently from all their non-םינהכ peers.When chinuch involves training a child to go against the tide, the method of chinuch needs to be adjusted. It needs to be a chinuch of תרמאו רומא – a transmission in a softer tone. The םינהכ needed to explain the mitzvos of האמוט and הרהט to their children by first inspiring them about the lofty role they play as a ןהכ, and how this unique status sets them apart from the rest of לארשי ללכ, and then gently communicating what having that role entailed. With the proper appreciation of who they were, the children of the םינהכ would not look at the תוכלה that applied only to them as restricting and unfair, but rather as an honor and opportunity to express their uniqueness. Therefore, the directive of םינטקה לע םילודג ריהזהל referencing הרהטו האמוט תוכלה as they apply to Kohanim was coached in the terminology of תרמאו רומא.This profound lesson from the הרותל םינזא has tremendous implications. We often wonder when in Chinuch we need to ‘lay down the law’, and use direct unambiguous language, or whether a more softer approach is in place.
