Message May 10, 2024ד״פשת רייא ’ב םישודק תשרפ BEYOND OUR COMFORT ZONE 7:36 PMDear Parents,In Parshas Kedoshim the possuk reads: וארית ויבאו ומא שיא. A man should fear his mother and father. Rashi quotes a famous teaching of ל״זח that when listing the mitzvah of ארומ – revering one’s parents, the mother is mentioned before the father. However, when listing the mitzvah of דוביכ – honoring one’s parents – the possuk lists the father first. Chazal explain that it is more natural for a child to revere a father more than a mother. A father figure tends to command a certain sense of awe and fear that a mother does not. Therefore, by the mitzvah of הארי, a mother is mentioned first since she is the parent whom the child may not instinctively revere. Conversely, a child will more easily honor a mother because she showers him with love and affection. Therefore the Torah mentions the father first, as honoring one’s father may not be as instinctive. The Mashgiach, Rav Yerucham Levovitz ל״צז writes that this lesson is not restricted to the תוכלה of דוביכ and ארומ, but apply to life generally. We can’t allow our natural predispositions to govern our life. The Torah wants us to get out of our comfort zone and not simply go with the flow. One shouldn’t say I am who I am, and I cannot change for the better. We as Yidden must be honest with ourselves and recognize our weaknesses and work to correct them. Rav Shlomo Wolbe ל״צז would say that the greatest praise a person could receive from a רסומ לעב was ״טרעדנעג ןיוש ךיז טאה רהע״ – he has already changed himself. The ultimate insult was עגעיטראפ זיא רהע – he is a finished product with nothing to change. This is the message of the mitzvah. The Torah is challenging us to revere our mother and honor our father. When being mechanech our children, we need to challenge them (age appropriately) to go beyond their comfort zone both in their ׳ה תדובע and in their interpersonal relationships. !תבש טוג Rabbi Ochs●● May 12 - Rebbeim meeting, 11:30 dismissal● May 17 - Grandparents’ Day● May 22 - General Studies Faculty meeting, 3pm dismissal for all students● May 27 - Early dismissal, Hamilton bldg - 12 pm, Williston bldg - 12:15 pm● June 2 - Rebbeim meeting, 11:30 dismissal● June 11 - Erev Shavuos: Hamilton building - No school, Williston bldg - 12 pm dismissal● June 12-14 - Shavuos, No school● First day of school for 2024-25 school year - September 4th.

The teachers and students are all fired up for the last stretch of the year!● Wow! Under the supervision of Mrs. Chana Rus Leventhal, our four Robotics teams competed strongly at the CIJE Robotics Competition on Thursday in Cherry Hill, NJ! For the second year in a row, one of our teams won SECOND PLACE out of 54 teams!! Our girls withstood the intensity and collaborated wonderfully! Their hard work paid off! ● In both the boys and girls buildings we are promoting a "Word of the Day" for teachers in nearly all the grades to use in promoting vocabulary in the their classrooms. Words were selected by students and each class works as a group or individually to compose a sentence with the word. Sentences that are creative and provide context clues to the definition are read over the intercom prior to dismissal. We look forward to capping the vocabulary initiative with a vocabulary parade at the end of the month. Stay tuned for more details!● As we prepare for Matan Torah, the Middle school boys kicked off an exciting Shabbos learning program for Sefira. Every Shabbos the boys earn tickets for learning toward a MAJOR raffle which will take place Erev Shavuos. B"H the first week got off to a great start, and we look forward to an uplifting Sefiras Haomer.● 1B was hard at work making matzohs before the pesach break, making sure they didn’t become more chametzdik:) See pictures in the Williston Snapshots section. Thank you Rabbi Sebbag!● Rabbi Solomon, father of Shlomo Chaim Solomon in 2B, came to 2B this past Friday to teach the boys about the mitzvah of Shatnez, which came up in the Parsha. Rabbi Solomon is the founder of the Boston Shatnez Laboratory. He showed the boys samples of raw wool and flax. He then explained to the boys which areas are most concerning for shatnez. Later on, Mr. Carey showed the boys the materials under a microscope. Thank you so much Rabbi Solomon and Mr. Carey!● Rabbi Moskovitz’s 8th grade class had a Rosh Chodesh BBQ at Chai Odom yesterday in celebration of their learning over Pesach!● Being that Sefira is a time for focusing on bein adam l'chaveiro, Mrs. Fontek started a Sefira Middos program during the Friday singing sessions. She has created videos featuring students acting out various scenarios, which will be shown during the Friday program. The girls will then be challenged to figure out what mistake the girl or girls in the video are making and what advice would be helpful for the girl/s. They will have a week to think about it and submit their entries into a raffle. The following Friday, a raffle will be picked from all the entries, and as long as the girl's entry is accurate, she will be awarded with a prize. Can you help your daughter help Adiva with this week's challenge?● In learning about life in the Middle Ages, noblewomen would wear a large pointed hat called a hennin, (meaning “burden”) and long trains on her gown, indicating her wealth showing she could afford the extra fabric. In 4G, we made our own version of the noblewoman's hennin hats.● A belated Mazal tov to Rabbi Kohn's 8th grade class on finishing the second perek of Makos. They celebrated this tremendous accomplishment with a delicious "Glatt Bite" Siyum on Monday. They are already deep into the third perek as they work their way to b'ezras Hashem finishing the entire Masechta!● 3B and 4B teamed up to create marble mazes out of Legos, making sure the marble can always move, but takes as long as possible to work through the maze. In addition to teamwork, and planning, the groups learned about force, effort and work, as they designed the path of their marble. See photos in the Williston Snapshots section.● 6B kicked off their debate unit with a special guest speaker Mrs. Lisa Marshall (both lawyer and parent). She was able to share her court experiences with the class. Thank you Mrs. Marshall for taking the time to enrich the class!● In honor of Rosh Chodesh Iyar, 1-8G created Lag Baomer bonfire cupcakes. Thank you to the 8th grade G.O. and Mrs Sternfield for arranging this activity!Uniform Gemach AnnouncementThe make-up (and final) girls' Aerobics & Movement afterschool class will take place this Monday, April 24th Mazel Tov!
