Message March 21, 2025 ה״פשת רדא א''כ להקיו תשרפ EVEN IN THE MUNDANE 6:40 PMDear Parents, I hope everyone had a wonderful and meaningful Purim. It was so nice to see all the ךעלרדניק ערעייט in their costumes. You should continue to see much Yiddish Nachas from them. The Gemara writes in Megillah on ׳ה ףד that the chachomim originally desired that Purim be a Yom Tov like other םיבוט םימי – including an הכאלמ רוסיא (refraining from work). However, םהילע ולביק אל הכאלמ – the people did not accept upon themselves to refrain from work. The תמא תפש explains this refusal by noting that Yom Tov is a time when Hashem affords us the opportunity to take a break from the daily grind of everyday life. Instead, we use the day to infuse ourselves with השודק(holiness) and תוינחור and to recharge our spiritual batteries. After the Yom Tov completes, we make הלדבה, separating us from that utopia of Yom Tov, reenergized and recharged with our הנומא and ןוחטב to face the לוחה ימי (mundane). The Yom Tov of Purim, writes the Sfas Emes, is a celebration of a series of events where Hashem demonstrated His presence from within the routine of the mundane. He showed how behind the scenes He is guiding and leading Klal Yisrael. This Yom Tov therefore is different from the others. Its lesson is to demonstrate Hashem’s presence in our daily existence. There is thus no need for an הכאלמ רוסיא, nor for Havdalah. We never separate from the lesson of Purim. It stays with us at all times. תבש טוג Rabbi Ochs ● Sun, Mar 23 -Rebbeim mtg, 11:30 dismissalMon, April 7 - 4PM 6-8B dismissalApril 8-21 - No school, PesachWed, April 30 - GS staff meeting, 3PM dismissal all gradesFri, May 9 - Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ DaySun, May 18 - Torah Academy Auction (women only)
BULLETIN BOARD● What an amazing show! The Uncle Moishy Benefit Concert was a hit — over 350 attendees filled the room with energy, and the kids had an unforgettable time singing along and learning all about mitzvos with Uncle Moishy. Want to keep the inspiration going and be entered into our exciting gift basket raffle? See the back page for details!● Last Wednesday was our annual Purim carnival at the Williston building! There was such good cheer all around, and lots of fun! There was a moonwalk for the boys to enjoy, hamantaschen for all, and lots of fun booths and prizes.● This year something new was done at the Williston carnival! There was a Rebbi Raffle. Each Rebbi received 10 tickets to put in 3 different prize boxes. The prizes were a $100 Visa gift card towards Pesach, a pizza party for the class, and a week to have a parking spot behind the building. Congratulations to the winning Rebbeim. ● 4B is up to more a MAZING work, as complex, hidden, and secret passageway mazes are the theme of the day in our makerspace block.● 3B has been learning about states of matter and their transitions. Part of the learning included how liquids settle into the shape of their container, while gasses expand to fill their containers. To demonstrate what can be done by understanding these transitions, 3B constructed butane rockets! Bottles were decorated and then filled approximately 1/3 with room temperature water. Then liquid butane, which boils at 30.2 degrees Fahrenheit, is poured on top of the water. The bottle is inverted (the opening now facing down), the butane mixes with the room temperature water and begins to boil. Since the butane is surrounded by water on all sides, it completely boils in ~1/10 of a second. The now gaseous butane expands to fill the bottle, pushing our water out the bottom and sending our rocket 50-60 feet in the air. The launching took place out in the yard with 1B joining to watch the excitement! In one rocket, too much butane was added and the water began to freeze. So students were able to see how one thing (butane) can be boiling while another (water) is freezing, demonstrating how the bonds between butane molecules are much weaker than the bonds between water molecules. Thank you Mr. Riley for this fantastic experiment! Thank you to the fifth graders who helped out. See pictures further in the Bulletin.● On Wednesday last week, the middle school boys were treated to special basketball games at the BU gym. We rented 3 of the gyms for the boys to use and enjoy. Thank you so much to all the parents who helped with the carpooling! ● 7B Outback Project: Sourcing material, brainstorming solutions, and starting to build their models. 7B is taking charge of their plans and making them come true.● 4B made surprise Purim packages for the entire Williston staff! Thank you Mr. Carey and 4B!● 7-8B students were given a special presentation this week by Brookline Police Officer, Officer Kerrigan, on the science and dangers of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs. Many months in preparation, including meetings and previewing of the material, resulted in today's successful program. Students asked appropriate questions and learned about the realities of addiction and what foreign substances do to the growing brain. Thank you Nurse Miri for arranging this presentation. See pictures further in the Bulletin.● Things are heating up in 4G as they learn about static electricity! The students learned that charging up a balloon with four different kinds of materials (wool, cotton, silk, and nylon) will determine how high or low the charge will be. After charging the balloons, they were held over tiny bits of paper to observe the amount each one attracts. A second experiment was done with different substances such as Rice Krispies, cinnamon, a salt & pepper mixture, and cornstarch. They observed whether the items tested light or heavy.● Nurse Miri discussed the importance of hygiene and taking care of our bodies with the 1B class.● Mazel tov to 2G on completing Parshas Lech Lecha! They are looking forward to their siyum next week!● Mazel tov to 8G on completing Parshas Masei and Sefer Bamidbar! They celebrated with a siyum of falafel and a salad bar as they arrived on the shores of Eretz Yisroel! Thank you Mrs. Ochs!● The fifth grade girls’ class cumulatively read 143 books and celebrated with an ice cream party! Thank you Miss Zazula!Uniform Gemach AnnouncementMazel Tov!
