June 7, 2024ד״פשת ןויס ’א רבדמב תשרפ WE ARE םידבע 8:01 PMDear Parents,As we approach the yomtov of Shavuos, we reconnect and readdress the depth of our commitment towards Torah and Mitzvos. The Beis HaLevi wonders how עמשנו השענ commits us to be לבקמ the Torah. The Ramabam in Hilchos Nedarim writes that if Reuven would tell Shimon: I promise to do whatever you say, the neder is not binding. One can only make a neder on ול שיש רבד הבצק, something that is stipulated and defined. According to this halacha, the commitment of עמשנו השענ shouldn’t be irrevocable. Why was it effective? The Beis HaLevi answers that עמשנו השענ wasn’t just a promise to do whatever Hashem commanded. By saying עמשנו השענ, Klal Yisrael were committing to be servants of Hashem and were transferring themselves to Hashem’s jurisdiction in the same way an דבע is הנקמ himself to his master. When a master acquires a slave, he owns the slave, and can then obligate the slave to do whatever the master wishes. The Beis HaLevi quotes the mechilta on the possuk that states םימעה לכמ הלוגס יל ויהת םתאו – you will be a treasure to me from all the nations: הרותב ןיקסועו יל ןיונק ויהתש – you will be acquired by me and involve yourself in Torah. This, explains the Beis HaLevi, is the difference between Klal Yisrael and the Umos HaOlam. The nations of the world’s commitment to keep the seven mitzvos is like a רדנ הבצק וב שיש. Every mitzvah that Klal Yisrael performs – including the seven mitzvos – are because we are ׳ה ידבע.In the birchos HaTorah we say daily, we make a bracha of הרות ירבדב קוסעל and then continue with אנ ברעהו – please make the Torah sweet. With the bracha, explain the mefarshim, we are acknowledging that since we are םידבע, we will be involved in Torah, regardless how challenging. After we make that commitment, we ask Hashem to please let me experience the sweetness and geshmak of your Torah and Mitzvos that we are committed to perform. It is important to make sure that our children understand that being a Yid means we are owned by Hashem, and that drives our daily, no-matter-what obligations to perform His mitzvos and learn His Torah regardless of our personal feelings or struggles. Yet at the same time, we must communicate the sweetness, beauty and geshmak that is a hallmark of being a Yid. Wishing you תבש טוג and בוט םוי טוג! B”HMay 28, 2024Dear Friends,As you many of you know, my father, avi mori, Yermiyahu Zizel ben Chaim A”H passed away at the end of October this year. He wanted to be buried next to my mother A”H in Wethersfield, CT. Because my father A”H passed away 3 weeks after the war began here in Israel we were not able to come to the States to be at his levaya, though, B”H, we were able to do a zoom. Bezrat Hashem, on Sunday, July 14, we are planning to have a hakamas matzevah for my father. That day will also be my mother AH’s 32nd yarzheit. Since I was unable to be present for my father’s kevura this will be my first time at the gravesite since his passing. It would mean so much to me to have you join us at the Beis HaChaim. There will be a breakfast at Chayee Odom after shacharit at 9 a.m. and we will leave for Connecticut after breakfast. We are thinking of hiring a bus to make it comfortable for everyone to join who is able, however I need a count of how many people could potentially come so I can see what’s the best arrangement to make. The ride is approximately 1.5 hours each way. Please rsvp to me at mpkowall@gmail.com by June 9, if you will be able to join us for the breakfast and on the bus so we can make the appropriate arrangements. There is no cost involved for anyone who joins us besides your time.We also welcome anyone who wishes to join us on Shabbas Kodesh, Parashat Chukat, July 13 for the kiddush which we are sponsoring in memory of Nosson’s father, Moshe ben Chaim, whose yarzheit is that day and my mother, Fraida bas Elchonon whose yarzheit is the following day.Thank you all very much.Tizku l’mitzvot, Miriam and Nosson Kowall
