This new equipment will be used for trainingsessions, presentations, and community informationevents.Yesah Art Monument Unveiling at Fort Christanna On Saturday, March 22, 2025, a community event was held atFort Christanna in Lawrenceville, Virginia, marking theunveiling of the Yesáh (Portable) Art Monument & Mapping.This gathering is part of the Yesá:sahį Language and SacredPlaces Project, supported by Virginia Tech’s MonumentsAcross Appalachia Virginia, Indigenous East (a program of theLandberry Foundation), and the Yesá:sahį Language andSacred Places Project. They were also introduced to Christianity, the English language, and European cultural practices."She further explained, "This artwork monument symbolizes our Four Daughter agricultural ceremonial calendar.Each direction represents a specific daughter, and the seat we created in her honor is made from wood sourcedfrom her corresponding direction. A number of counties haveexpressed their worries about the necessity forenhanced school funding. Many of these areas haveaging facilities, and the expenses associated withrenovations are often too high for rural communities.Solar Energy: Several counties in attendance voicedtheir concerns about maintaining solar oversight atthe local level rather than the state level. There areworries about delays in connecting to the 230 KV lineprovided by Dominion Energy, which is expected totake four years.Road Maintenance: The condition of secondaryroads and the need for funding to maintain themwere highlighted as significant issues by multiplecounties.Reassessment: Funding for reassessment ischallenging; exploring the possibility of a regionalproject could help alleviate costs.Mandates: Counties are facing costly requirementsimposed by the State that are not fully funded.Emergency Services: There is a decline in volunteerparticipation, and funding for hourly or salariedpositions, along with additional operational costs, isinsufficient or unaffordable.Litter Control: Illegal dumping of trash and otherhousehold items has become a pressing concern inrural Southern Virginia. It was suggested to increasepenalties for these irresponsible actions.Public Notice: Proposed changes to Public Noticerequirements were discussed, as newspaper postingsare expensive and it is uncertain if they are stilleffective given the rise of new social media platformsand websites. Could these requirements be revised?Animal Control: A recommendation was made tointegrate the Animal Control department under lawenforcement, providing additional support similar tothat offered to line-of-duty officers.Data Centers: Some counties expressed feelingoverlooked, as Data Centers are not adequatelyconsidering the entire region in their plans. Their goal is to have approximately 566locations operational by April 2025.David Lipscomb provided a broadband update onbehalf of Empower at the February Brunswick CountyBoard of Supervisors monthly meeting. Lawrenceville Manor is scheduled for upcoming renovations.Mr. Tommy Johnson has reported that VDOT hassuccessfully repaired a total of 1,150 potholes withinthe County. In addition, maintenance work has beencarried out on ditches, brush, and litter control. VDOThas announced that the bridge at Highway 46 over theNottoway River is now expected to be completed inJuly 2025 due to supply delays.Highway Clean Up and Maintenance.
Bright Leaf. Following presentations from CEP Solar, LLC, along with public feedback, the Planning Commissionrecommended to approval of CEP Solar, LLC’s request for a conditional use permit to construct, operate, andmaintain a utility-scale solar facility with a capacity of up to 8.75 megawatts. The project will cover roughly 64.5acres, which includes a secured area for solar panels and stormwater management ponds that total about 39.3acres. Located in the Sturgeon Election District and the Sturgeon Magisterial District, the facility will be positionednear the intersection of Bright Leaf Road and Planters Road—specifically to the south of Bright Leaf Road, east ofPlanters Road, and north of Governor Harrison Parkway. This agreement is betweenBrunswick County and Virginia Electric and Power Company concerning the application for a conditional usepermit, Case No. 22-002, for a utility-scale solar electric facility with a capacity of up to 300 megawatts. Thisfacility will be situated across forty-one parcels, totaling approximately 5,813 acres, owned by various individualsand entities. The agreement approved provides terms governing the development and decommissioning of theproposed solar facility and financial compensation to be paid to the County, in addition to tax payments. The Brunswick County Board of Supervisors has approved the Solar Facility Siting Agreement inaccordance with Virginia Code Sections 15.2-2316.6 to 15.2-2316.9. This agreement, made between BrunswickCounty and Zeus Energy, LLC, pertains to Zeus Energy's application for a conditional use permit (“CUP”) for autility-scale solar electric facility with a capacity of up to 200 megawatts (“MWac”) and an accompanying batteryenergy storage facility of up to 100 MWac. The agreement outlines the terms for developing anddecommissioning both the solar and battery energy storage facilities, as well as the financial compensation to beprovided to the County, in addition to tax payments. Zeus Phase 1. The Planning Commission recommended the approval of Conditional Use Permit Case No. 23-006for Zeus Energy, LLC. This permit allows for the construction, operation, and maintenance of a utility-scale solarfacility with a capacity of up to 200 megawatts, along with a battery energy storage facility of up to 100megawatts. The property in question spans approximately 2,146 acres, which includes a proposed fenced area forsolar panels and stormwater control ponds covering around 1,484 acres. It is situated in the Powellton MagisterialDistrict and the Powellton Election District. The parcels are primarily located in the southeastern area of theCounty, south and east of Dry Bread Road and west of Halifax Road. After considering the Planning Commission'srecommendation and taking public input into account, the Board of Supervisors voted to approve Conditional UsePermit Case No. 23-006.
