Uroboros sculpture, Sarah Hall; part of ‘Elvennel: a collective experience in forgetting, remembering and letting go’, 2017.
Throughout human history, people have met together to share their dreaming and learn how to use dreams to guide and inform their lives. We dream about important initiatory experiences from birth to death, as well as to make sense of daily life. As Jung said, dreams have a social function. Freud called them the royal road to the unconscious. Social dreaming is potentially as much a part of contemporary life as it has always been. It has been used within the Jungian community for many years, and independently developed by the work of Dr. Gordon Lawrence and colleagues at the Tavistock Institute, London. It is widely used in organisational development and management consultancy. Social Dreaming aims to transform thinking through exploring dreams by free association, amplification and systemic thinking to make links and find connections between the dreams, to reach new thoughts. It accesses the thinking, wisdom and knowledge embedded in dream symbols. It is not concerned with individual dreams but focuses on what is shared among participants’ dreams. The dream matrix mirrors in conscious, waking life the unconscious world of dream-work. The dream, not the dreamer, is the focus of the work of Social Dreaming. In a matrix, participants sit in an open arrangement of chairs, narrate their dreams, and offer associations and reflections. After each matrix, there is a dream reflection dialogue where insights from dreams are linked back to our everyday world. The Dream Matrix will be hosted by:Dr. Carola Mathers. Carola worked as a psychiatrist in the NHS for many years, training as a Jungian analyst alongside this. Upon leaving the NHS she established her private practice, first as a member of the Society of Analytical Psychology, and later as a member and Training Analyst with the Association of Jungian Analysts. Sand Mandala at Whitsand Bay, Sarah Hall 2021
The Sand Mandala is a Tibetan Buddhist tradition involving the creation and destruction of mandalas made from coloured sand. A sand mandala is ritualistically dismantled once it has been completed and its accompanying ceremonies and viewing are finished to symbolise the Buddhist doctrinal belief in the transitory nature of material life.Professional artist and Jungian analyst Sarah Hall has been creating sand drawings and beach art since childhood, more recently customising this ancient spiritual practice to make mandalas which explore narrative visualisations of dreams, contemporary responses to environmental issues, and re-interpreting myths and legends. She invites you to take part in making a collective mandala by gathering your own array of natural ingredients from the surrounding landscape to create a giant beach image. The image will then be ceremonially dismantled by the sea as the tide rolls in and engages with the image, taking its symbolic creative expression back out into the ocean. The Sand Mandala Art Workshop will be hosted by Sarah Hall, Artist, Art Therapist and Jungian Analyst.SAND MANDALA ARTSARAH HALLFreud said dreams are the Royal road to the unconscious - but what is the unconscious, and what is the road for? Is it one way, or two way?Dreams are a natural product of the mind, and this short workshop will introduce some new ideas from neuroscience about where dreams come from, what they are for, and how the road map could be read. Differences in time between the conscious and unconscious, and ideas from philosophy will be explored, acting as a compass. During this interactive workshop, active imagination and drawing will be used to play with participants’ own dreams. The Dream Workshop is facilitated by Dr Dale Mathers MB. BS., a retired member of the Association of Jungian Analysts, London. A psychiatrist, he teaches analytical psychology in the UK and Europe, particularly Russia and Ukraine. He directed the Student Counselling Service at the London School of Economics and was a Mental Health Foundation Research Fellow at St. George’s Hospital, London.Publications include: An introduction to meaning and purpose in analytical psychology; Vision and Supervision (ed.); Self and No Self (ed., with Prof. Mel Miller and Prof. Osamu Ando.) Alchemy and psychotherapy (ed.); Depth psychology and climate change: the green book (ed.), all from Routledge.DREAM WORKSHOPDALE MATHERS
Brass Singing Bowls (Photo: ‘Magic Bowls’, Unsplash)
The use of Sound as a therapeutic tool is a non-invasive process that can bring the mind, body and energy field into balance. This is realised by vocal toning, singing, chanting, or using other instrumentssuch as tuning forks, Tibetan or crystal bowls, gongs, drums, rattles and, most important, the Silence between the sounds!Currently enjoying a resurgence, Sound Healingis an ancient practice used by BCE Greek and Egyptian civilisations and found in Hindu Vedic scripture. Indigenous shamans all over the world still use sound to bring Healing to their tribe.Everything in the Universe vibrates at its own individual frequency, including the human body. If part of our body is unwell or we have a ‘dis-ease’, then the whole body responds and feels out of sync. We can bring the body back into alignment by using sympathetic vibrations and resonance. During an individual Sound healing session, vocal scales and mantras are used to move energy and unblock imbalances. By using a clear intention to send these sounds into the chakras (centres of subtle energies that affect the whole; mental, physical and emotional), there is an expansion of consciousness. The Sound Healing Workshop will be hosted by Teresa Wicksteed, member of the College of Sound Healing.More than just a sound bath, Teresa delivers interactive sessions in a safe and non-judgemental environment, introducing you to a range of sounding methodologies, including the voice and her beautiful hand-crafted instruments. These are then played for the individual, guided by intuition, allowing for a deeper level of transformation to take place. Sarah, Cornwall Ayurveda & Yoga1This workshop is limited to 10 participants, and places will be decided by ballot on the Friday evening. For those who are not drawn in the ballot there will be an opportunity to join the Social Dreaming Matrix or the Sand Art Mandala making workshops, which are not limited in numbers. There is also the option of booking a private one-to-one Sound Healing session with Teresa at an additional cost of £40 (reduced conference rate) per individual session. This needs to be booked with Teresa directly at www.teresawicksteed.co.uk/sound-healing. Distant Sound Healing is also available at this discounted rate for those wishing to buy CPD packages of conference recordings. Just mention ‘Jung by the Sea’ to Teresa when booking.SOUND HEALING1TERESA WICKSTEED

SCARAVELLI INSPIRED YOGAYoga never teaches you something you don’t already have, it only removes things you no longer need. Yoga removes obstacles and internal resistance that stands in our way. The body is a fascinating vehicle for discovery and each asana is a container for an experience. An experience that hopefully takes us deeper into self awareness of both body and mind.‘Yoga must not be practiced to control the body: it is the opposite, it must bring freedom to the body, all the freedom it needs.’ Vanda ScaravelliScaravelli Yoga isn’t so much about the shape you make with your body or the name of poses but the awareness you bring to the experience and what it feels like for you in your body. Your body shows you where it will open, when you let go of the idea of where it should open. Releasing the body through inviting relaxation rather than using force.YOGA AL FRESCOHANNAH GUYSOCIAL & ACTIVITIESYou are welcome to go wild swimming from the private sandy bay at Polhawn Fort, but please be aware that there is no life guard patrolling the cove and the currents along this stretch of coast can be strong, so caution is needed even if you are a confident swimmer. Food and drink is central to our shared celebration, and draws from Cornish fare that has evolved across its land and sea— from the traditional to modern produce.Linking to this unique place, we are working with local suppliers and producerswho are committed to using ingredients sourced within a 50 mile radius of the Fort. Lunches and suppers will include a range of local meat, fish, vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options—from coast and farm. For those who also enjoy a treat, we’re planning a Cornish Cream Tea on Sunday afternoon. You will be asked to let us know details of any dietary requirements in advance of the event to ensure you receive meals that cater to your needs (see conference website for details). Please note that food choices cannot be changed on the day, so if you opt for vegetarian, vegan or gluten free, these selections will be consistent across all meals provided.Morris dancing is synonymous with celebration. Combining dance and music in a lively—sometimes raucous—performance, the dancers draw from tradition, ritual and disguise. Wreckers Border Morris, from the Tamar Valley in South East Cornwall, was born in October 2000, picking up more members along the way.Border Style Morris was chosen for its flexibility, liveliness and noise. This style extends to the distinctive rag jackets, known as tatters, and hats decorated with feathers, symbols and other embellishments. A Morris ‘troupe’ is referred to as a side. The Wreckers side dances traditional border dances written by various members (past and present). As it evolves, the side is expanding its repertoire to bring new ideas and styles of dance into the mix. Their lively dance style and air of fun explains makes them a popular draw wherever they go.MUSIC AND DANCINGWRECKERS BORDER MORRISFOOD AND DRINKLOCAL SUPPLIERS & PRODUCERS
