By way of introduction my name is Bradford Louryk I am a Drama Desk Award winner a Creative Director an Art Director a Style Director a Photography Director an experience creator a boutique hotel designer a graphic designer a brand architect I am a Fellow of the Sundance Institute and a grammar obsessive so I am a bang up copywriter I am the subject of three non fiction texts and one work of fiction I have received two history making profiles in The New York Times I have been featured in The Post The Daily News Newsday The Boston Globe The Boston Herald The Boston Phoenix The Scotsman The Guardian American Theatre GOTHAM Magazine as one of New York City s 100 Most Eligible Bachelors and Time Out New York among others I am a creative force of nature I can be a tough customer but it is invariably in the service of delivering outstanding results I am a great collaborator I hold myself to the highest standards so you don t have to And I wear my sunglasses at night I grew up in a home filled with antiques and developed an early feverish life long enthusiasm for beauty Each winter as a child in Scranton Pennsylvania when the radio tower on the Scranton Times building was lit up like a Christmas tree my father would take me not to look at the tree but to point out the Tiffany Co sculpted owls with their glowing green eyes that surmounted the doors In third grade I founded the Louryk Printing Agency and would take orders for birthday banners and greeting cards from my classmates The PTA hired me to design its newsletter Later as a freshman at Vassar I began creating the key art for student theater productions in which I appeared because I was embarrassed by the quality of the posters I saw around campus By my senior year I had been hired by the Department of Drama to design all of the artwork for all of its plays Since I arrived in New York I have honed and applied all of those previously mentioned skills for players in a range of sectors from major not for profit institutions to corporate entities My personal creative endeavors have been acclaimed on an international level The following pages represent some of my favorite examples from among the work I have executed throughout my career I hope it communicates the way I think the way I approach my work and the level to which I am capable of delivering regardless of client or budget My name is Bradford Louryk We should do something creative together

In December 2016 I was invited to join a project that would take advantage of the full complement of my creative abilities to dream up a new boutique hotel brand and transform a portfolio of existing properties throughout New York City into Monocle Hotels In my capacity as Style Director every practical and aesthetic choice from naming to branding and voice to the design of the interiors and exteriors amenities and food and beverage outlets fell within my purview I MONOCLE H OT EL S With one foot set in the storied past of golden age Manhattan and the other planted firmly in the present I conceived Monocle as a delightful surprising gently immersive and uniquely interactive experience for its future guests a lens through which they could experience the city and the specific neighborhoods in which the hotels were located I consulted with stage magicians to learn how to make hidden messages appear on steamy bathroom mirrors and worked with augmented and virtual reality creators to make galleries filled with unique display and exhibition pieces come to life and to punctuate a rooftop bar designed to emulate a collision of my favorite city parks with binoculars that would show the skyline of the city from different periods in its history Alongside my chief collaborator a Tony Awardwinning Broadway producer I led a team of consultants architects fashion designers landscape designers and manufacturers of custom fixtures furnishings and equipment toward bringing this vision to life and disrupting and improving the boutique hospitality experience

guest bathrooms have a contemporary edge and clean geometry featuring glass enclosed showers with two part showerheads open shelving and subway tile with modern proportions the custom black and brass penny tile floors connect to the heritage of the space and the dna of the monocle brand

While having my nose to the grindstone conceiving and executing the Monocle Hotels brand at its flagship location I was tasked with creating long term pop up rooftop bar amenities at two of the other future locations still fully operational under an interim umbrella and giving each its own unique and marketable identity For one of these located on 46th Street on the edge of the Diamond District and a block from Fifth Avenue I found my inspiration in its location and acknowledging the as yet untouched and uninspired exterior and lobby space a guest would encounter en route to the roof I called it The Hidden Gem II THE H I D D EN G EM I designed the entirety of the concept from the identity to the physical space to the food and beverage offerings to the staff uniforms around the pieces of jewelry guests might discover in any of the luxury boutiques lining the avenue and added a dash of rock and roll for modernity and accessibility I upholstered the banquette seating in Tiffany box blue with the texture of Louis Vuitton Epi Leather and chose crystal chiavari chairs arranging them around marble tables whose forms conjure pronged ring settings I nestled golden sconces into boxwood and fitted them with diamond shaped lightbulbs and festooned the ceiling canopy with swags of pearls Finally in collaboration with the bar s management I drafted an appealing menu of easily prepared light fare that supported the overall theme selecting unbreakable and disposable dinner and servingware designed to emulate majolica china and gilt baroque utensils with which the guests selections would be delivered to the table and devised a list of colorful cocktails named for iconic pieces of jewelry and the designers who fashioned them You may ask Could I just order an IPA You bet They re listed on the menu under DeBeers

While having my nose to the grindstone conceiving and executing the Monocle Hotels brand at its flagship location I was tasked with creating long term pop up rooftop bar amenities at two of the other future locations still fully operational under an interim umbrella and giving each its own unique and marketable identity For one of these located on 46th Street on the edge of the Diamond District and a block from Fifth Avenue I found my inspiration in its location and acknowledging the as yet untouched and uninspired exterior and lobby space a guest would encounter en route to the roof I called it The Hidden Gem II THE H I D D EN G EM I designed the entirety of the concept from the identity to the physical space to the food and beverage offerings to the staff uniforms around the pieces of jewelry guests might discover in any of the luxury boutiques lining the avenue and added a dash of rock and roll for modernity and accessibility I upholstered the banquette seating in Tiffany box blue with the texture of Louis Vuitton Epi Leather and chose crystal chiavari chairs arranging them around marble tables whose forms conjure pronged ring settings I nestled golden sconces into boxwood and fitted them with diamond shaped lightbulbs and festooned the ceiling canopy with swags of pearls Finally in collaboration with the bar s management I drafted an appealing menu of easily prepared light fare that supported the overall theme selecting unbreakable and disposable dinner and servingware designed to emulate majolica china and gilt baroque utensils with which the guests selections would be delivered to the table and devised a list of colorful cocktails named for iconic pieces of jewelry and the designers who fashioned them You may ask Could I just order an IPA You bet They re listed on the menu under DeBeers

Established in 1986 and named in honor of the First Lady of the American Theater the Lucille Lortel Awards annually celebrate outstanding achievements Off Broadway For the event s 25th anniversary I was asked by George Forbes the Executive Director of the Lucille Lortel Foundation and President of the Off Broadway League to completely overhaul its identity and to design the entire evening including the show itself The caveat the existing physical award statuette could not be changed they d bought them in bulk And I despised the look of it IV THE LU C I L L E LO R T EL AWA R DS Over the course of eight years I continued to gently evolve the brand until the stores of those loathsome statuettes had been depleted and I was given the opportunity to design a new one Drawing my inspiration from the great lady herself the new Lortel Award statuette reflects Lucille at the start and at the conclusion of her career the face figure and hairstyle of Lucille as young actress in the 1920s the ruffled collars she adopted as she aged into the role of producer into the 1990s and the omnipresent strands of pearls that connected those two points She stands upon a fluted column topped and surrounded by the star motif which echoes the famous Playwrights Sidewalk outside the Lucille Lortel Theater on Christopher Street and she herself holds one aloft with both hands as if personally bestowing the honor upon each new winner This new statuette allowed the identity I d always imagined to be fully realized and drew praise from across the industry and I ecstatically incorporated it across all media and throughout the event itself

Fifteen years into its existence and with a new Artistic Director installed at its helm I was approached by off Broadway s Keen Company known principally for its revivals of mid century works to develop a new brand identity for the organization Leadership wanted to acknowledge Keen Company s sterling reputation and award winning history while opening up new avenues of theatrical exploration by presenting world and New York premieres of plays and musicals by contemporary playwrights composers and lyricists V K EEN CO M PA N Y Jettisoning its unwieldy and outmoded logo I created a new system anchored by a bold compact and portable mark whose colors could be changed to differentiate among the company s three programmatic efforts I chose a dimensional typeface that harkened to mid century theatrical marquees but paired it with a fresh bright green to suggest new and exciting things springing up in a place already familiar to theatergoers Thrilled with the new branding the company asked me to rethink all of their communications materials and bring them up to the same level So for the next three seasons I Creative Directed all key production artwork shifting the organization toward original photography which I also directed whenever possible to take fullest advantage of its casting of actors with recognizable and award nominated names and faces I designed and deployed all print and digital marketing and advertising including subscriber acquisition materials which played a major role in growing the subscriber base and audiences in general and I worked closely with leadership on special events and fundraisers creating the invitation suites and marketing materials for those as well

In early 2001 a handful of my Vassar classmates and I established Studio 42 an off Off Broadway theater company to produce plays of our own devising and those we discovered or commissioned I served Studio 42 as Artistic Director and also created both its brand identity and the key art for its theatrical productions and special events Standing out in the downtown theater is no easy task but Studio 42 s instantly identifiable branding and unique programming garnered early critical acclaim and a large dedicated audience VIII ST U D I O 4 2 Steadily increasing the scale scope and frequency of its work the company shortly thereafter created a philanthropic arm The Starving Artists Award Fund and each year an independent panel of adjudicators would designate a cash grant of 5 000 to an applicant working in any artistic discipline in New York City The grant was announced at the annual Starving Artists Ball which drew hundreds and later thousands of guests and was accompanied by a loving cup trophy I managed to convince Jonathan Adler to make for us This concentrated period of intense productivity resulted in incredible fatigue among the founding members and in 2005 we handed the reins over to a new team In turn that new team found themselves flagging after just a few seasons and we took it back With the return of its entire original leadership team and a revised brand identity the company relaunched in 2008 with the Starving Artists Halloween Ball which I conceived designed and executed in its entirety and which drew the largest crowd ever seen at a Studio 42 event Under my Artistic Direction the company s formerly unique programming became unproducible programming and only work deemed impossible to mount plays with too many characters too complicated sets too scandalous subjects was considered Drawing standing room only celebrity filled crowds and coverage from media outlets like Vanity Fair the legacy of Studio 42 and its unproducible plays continues to provoke comparison and conversation in the theater industry today

Sometimes you just fall in love with an idiot That was certainly the case for me with Pinto Degas the disgraced New Wave w nderkind who came to be regarded as the world s worst living filmmaker I played him as a septuagenerian in Timothy Charles Browne s controversial unproducible play The Erotic Diary of Anne Frank for Studio 42 but long after the curtain came down I still couldn t get Pinto out of my head I called Timothy and asked if we might discuss future opportunities for Mr Degas This was ostensibly a bit unusual given that he died before the end of the play IX E V ERY T H I N G T ER R I B LY Instead I suggested we should look to the character s past and explore the first of many times his career was in decline in Rome in the 1970s And that we should conceive it as a documentary artifact imagining Pinto as the world s first reality star and follow his international sexploits with his accidentally infamous nearly fabulous entourage in a goldenhued world of drunken nymphomanical Soviet spies arrogant Samurai matinee idols high stakes international co productions axe wielding ex wives high speed chases on low horsepower yachts and quite possibly ghosts in the basement As something heretofore unseen and never meant to be rediscovered giving contemporary audiences a look at the madness the passion and the pomposity of Italian Cinema s greatest Nobodies Bringing a third collaborator on board we wrote not only a pilot script but also detailed synopses for a full season of 12 episodes and broad strokes outlines for successive seasons Furthermore I secured funding hired a crew and produced a sizzle reel for which I also served as Art Director in addition to playing the lead role simultaneously directing still photography on set and packaging the final product as a parody Criterion Collection release The result is less Studio 54 and more Studio 81 2 It s anything goes It s Everything Terribly

During an interminable return trip from London having exhausted all of the music I wanted to hear on my device I thought it might restore my pluck to revisit my high school nostalgia for The B 52s X G O O D ST U F F A NEW B 52 S I CA L As I sat and listened not only were my spirits lifted but by the time I d landed I had thoroughly conceived a catalogue musical whose plot was entirely driven by the characters and situations the band sang about in their happy summertime tunes Mo Dean Lorraine Claire Debbie and the Rock Lobster made appearances during a Summer of Love at the Love Shack There was even a Hot Pants Explosion for good measure A few weeks later I had the accidental good fortune to meet Fred Schneider the lead singer of The B 52s and managed to pitch him on the concept Which led him to ask to read the script Which did not exist So I led a handful of collaborators toward my vision and a week later I was able to present the members of the band with a complete manuscript accompanied by key art costume renderings and a scale model of the scenic design for Good Stuff A New B 52sical

Broadway Cares Equity Fights AIDS is one of the leading industry based non profit AIDS fundraising and grant making organizations in America helping men women and children across the country receive lifesaving medications health care nutritious meals counseling and emergency financial assistance XI B ROA DWAY CA R ES EQ U I T Y F I G H T S A I DS Unlike most non profit grant making organizations BC EFA must raise every dollar of its philanthropic budget each year in order to fulfill its mission and it does this in part through its Catalog of Giving In 2015 I was contacted by BC EFA and asked to reimagine the look and feel of the organization s annual printed mail piece which features a range of custom designed and branded holiday merchandise along with Broadway related books and music and products featuring the barely dressed performers from BC EFA s summer event Broadway Bares Humbled to be asked and glad to lend my eye I served as Art Director for this project for three seasons collaborating with the Head of Retail Outreach on designs ranging from a subtle watercolor motif to a slyly irreverent good things come in pain brown wrappers concept all of which boosted sales year over year and contributed significantly to BC EFA s fundraising efforts

I live in a 1923 Fred French designed sixteen floor building I was immediately drawn to it as it was the faithfully maintained heritage space of my dreams The same night I saw the empty white space I made every single design choice Without changing the physical structure at all my objective was to create an eye popping bachelor pad a walk in cabinet of curiosities in which I could entertain my friends and family and display my collection of deeply meaningful objects and antiques in a way that would stimulate me no matter where I look 15 PA R K AV EN U E O R HOME The color palette is tightly controlled Mainly blues and yellows and metallics with some green An orange Pierre Paulin chair A leopard velvet midcentury sofa a maximalist gesture on a minimalist piece Just a touch of red an antique painted folding screen some touches in the bedroom drapes the coral finials on a pair of lamps in the living room I tend to think that red is a color lazy designers use when they want to add excitement and can t figure out how to accomplish it otherwise I wanted everything I owned already to be in total harmony with the choices I d made for the new space which is exemplified I think by the nearly mathematical precision with which the pattern of the Fornasetti cloud wallpaper on the chimney breast is overlapped by one of the Fornasetti plates that hangs against it the clouds appear to flow from the wall covering onto the plate And there s a conversation happening between nearly every piece of art on the walls eyes are a big motif for me appearing in much of the artwork I own and every piece seems to be looking at another one next to it across from it above it My home acknowledges my influences and my personal history and I hope it tips its hat to the wit I endeavor to bring to any project I undertake It communicates this through a combination of new and old high and low outrageously luxurious and totally quotidian Everywhere I look I am continually inspired And I hope that my guests are too

Playwrights Horizons in addition to its 42nd Street facility and NYU s Playwrights Horizons Theater School owns and operates Ticket Central Ticket Central acts as the Box Office for Playwrights Horizons and provides sales and marketing support to dozens of theater dance opera and other performing arts groups in New York City selling their tickets online by phone from a physical box office on the street level of Playwrights Horizons and from mobile box offices as needed TICKET C EN T RA L In 2012 I was asked to reimagine the existing Ticket Central brand to replace its outdated logo it showed a hand holding the receiver of a landline phone from which a pair of tickets emerged and to create a new identity system to visually bring the company into the present and prepare it for the future Retaining the brand s color palette and nothing else I merged letterforms to create a substantial monogram used an arrow to indicate the crucial centricity of Ticket Central and created a subtle grayscale map referencing the subway system to act as a backdrop for the mark on components of the communication suite ticket stock and the company s website Eight years later the brand continues to grow and thrive and the identity continues to feel modern And if I do say so myself I think there s more than a passing resemblance to Hillary Clinton s 2016 campaign logo

Playwrights Horizons in addition to its 42nd Street facility and NYU s Playwrights Horizons Theater School owns and operates Ticket Central Ticket Central acts as the Box Office for Playwrights Horizons and provides sales and marketing support to dozens of theater dance opera and other performing arts groups in New York City selling their tickets online by phone from a physical box office on the street level of Playwrights Horizons and from mobile box offices as needed TICKET C EN T RA L In 2012 I was asked to reimagine the existing Ticket Central brand to replace its outdated logo it showed a hand holding the receiver of a landline phone from which a pair of tickets emerged and to create a new identity system to visually bring the company into the present and prepare it for the future Retaining the brand s color palette and nothing else I merged letterforms to create a substantial monogram used an arrow to indicate the crucial centricity of Ticket Central and created a subtle grayscale map referencing the subway system to act as a backdrop for the mark on components of the communication suite ticket stock and the company s website Eight years later the brand continues to grow and thrive and the identity continues to feel modern And if I do say so myself I think there s more than a passing resemblance to Hillary Clinton s 2016 campaign logo

The owners of the properties I was hired to transform into Monocle Hotels also own some of the most dazzling special events spaces in Manhattan Gotham Hall and The Ziegfeld Ballroom When they purchased the legendary Ziegfeld Theatre the single screen movie palace located on 54th Street which had for decades played host to world premieres and big event press screenings they sought to reimagine it as a luxury venue with an Art Deco feel And they asked me to create its logo Simultaneously they requested that I dust off the Gotham Hall brand and create a companion logo to resonate with that of the Ziegfeld I CO N I C S PAC ES The common thread I discovered was that both venues featured unique ceilings Gotham Hall began its life as the Greenwich Savings Bank in 1833 and is surmounted by a hexagonal patterned dome with an oval glass oculus from which depends the space s massive chandelier The Ziegfeld Ballroom s on the other hand features an asymmetrical series of inset rectilinear forms that create a modern Deco feel Thus I created containers for both logos based on each venue s distinctive ceiling design and let the typography live against them When this was completed ownership decided to form an umbrella organization under which both venues and any future acquisitions could live We chose the name Iconic Spaces for the new entity and I created yet another logo combining parts of both of these definitively iconic spaces into a new identity I grafted the Art Deco inspired balustrade from the Ziegfeld s balcony onto the Roman Doric columns that surround Gotham Hall s massive interior and chose a combination of heritage and modern faces to render the typeset words

This is laced up love This is the seventies In 1979 the film event that shook America to its core wasn t Apocalypse Now Kramer vs Kramer or even Xanadu it was Roller Boogie the story of star crossed lovers real estate fraud and the roller boogie contest to end all roller boogie contests Starring Linda Blair of The Exorcist fame Roller Boogie is not exactly held in high regard evidenced by its 0 rating on Rotten Tomatoes which made it prime source material for the camp soaked parody Roller Disco The Musical RO L L ER D I SCO Created by downtown w nderkind director and choreographer Jen Wineman in collaboration with Sam Forman and Eli Bolin Roller Disco was given its world premiere and out of town tryout at Harvard s four time Tony Award winning American Repertory Theater A R T and I was called upon to create the key art for the production Being a huge fan of designer Harry Allen s work for Areaware I knew that he had produced the Roller Stop in 2004 A replica roller skate rendered in resin and marble the Roller Stop was issued in a shining chrome finish its fixed wheels and enormous weight making it an ironic doorstop or bookend I called Allen s studio and asked if he would allow me to build my key art around his piece and he was thrilled to send me one to photograph And when I called to return the Roller Stop I was more thrilled when he told me to keep it Beyond even that the creative team and producers were very pleased with the resulting artwork and it remains among the most delightful collaborations of my career
