BEHAVIOR B Y LISA ANNE STELLA The Power of Come M ost people request I want my dog to come the second I call her But dogs are not remotely controlled they are not born to know what come means But come is a very important goal especially if the dog is anywhere near traffic wildlife or other people and animals It will feel strange but start with the game outlined below you ll get the hang of it Remember If you re facing your dog s back when you call come she s not hearing a direction she s thinking about whatever she s doing digging barking watching birds flying by You ve got her back So while you can teach a dog to come pretty reliably all dogs will have one distraction they can t put off Whether that distraction triggers fear anger or joy if it materializes in just the wrong moment you ll be left with an empty collar 4 PLAY TRAINING The best way to begin is to teach this direction as positive Start saying come whenever your dog approaches you Does she race in for a meal Say come and slap the dish on the floor Does she greet you enthusiastically Slip a come in there too She will begin to associate the command with positive interaction Even after you have taught a reliable come please keep your dog leashed in unpredictable areas My rule is if I can t tell what s going to happen next my dog can t either Here are five tips to help you teach your dog to come 1 COME AS HUDDLE Think of the command come as equivalent to huddle Before you expect your dog to come at a distance teach your dog that come means you re together not apart While on a leash wait until your pooch is not interested in you Call her name pause then say come happily as you take a few quick steps backward Make her stop in front of you pause then have a small piece of high value treat to reward her Come should always highlight fun and happiness 2 AVOID THE DREADED STARE Don t stare at your dog if you d like her to come Do not use an angry or demanding voice It s too confusing Put yourself in her place what if I called you as I said some random term over and over Would you understand any more quickly if I stared and raised my voice impatiently Remember your dog is not born knowing the meaning of come 3 YOUR VOICE IS HER ARROW Think of your voice as an arrow When calling your dog to come turn your back call her name and walk in the direction you want her to go 4 All things DOG in Northeast Ohio 5 PING PONG RECALL GAME Play with two or more people Have high value small bite sized cheese or salami for treats for each player Spread out all within sight of each other as your dog learns how to play the game Each player calls her name then come She should come directly to you Pause then reward The next person repeats Repeat 20 times Teaching come should signal light happy reward filled moments Your dog will feel better about you and about her life if her days are filled with smiles and laughter instead of fear and frustration Lisa Anne Stella is owner of The Doggie Inn Boarding and training dogs has become a fulltime passion of hers for the last eight years She has worked with many professionally certified trainers throughout the country and built The Doggie Inn as a place to connect with your canine friend and offer them a safe and comfortable haven while you re away
The Scoop on Poop By Karen Uthe Semancik A s we all try to go green and embrace sustainability practices in our homes our backyards may contain one of the most overlooked environmental pollutants of all dog poop In 1991 the Environmental Protection Agency placed dog droppings in the same health category as oil and toxic chemicals But unlike these other sources of water contamination dog feces can also produce disease causing bacteria that can be transmitted directly to humans To find more we turned to pooch poop expert Logan Miklosovic lead field technician for Dog Waste Management a professional pooper scooper service in Northeast Ohio Miklosovic said a few of the most important reasons to pick up after your pooch are that dog poop can pollute groundwater offend the neighbors and ruin the grass And that s just for starters Logan Miklosovic Not picking up after your dog regularly can bring on a multitude of different health risks Miklosovic said Keep in mind that their waste has a lot of different kinds of bacteria and can also be carriers of diseases and viruses like roundworms parvo Why do dogs eat poop It s the age old mystery of dog ownership and probably one most of us would rather not talk about but there are some reasons for coprophagia the official term of this disgusting habit according to Dr Carmen Petti of Avon Lake Animal Clinic 1 There may be unabsorbed nutrients in the stool and a dog s natural instinct is to get as many nutrients as possible Think feast or famine theory 2 It can also be a texture preference In the winter frozen stool is a different consistency 3 Dogs may eat another pet s stool to get rid of that animal s territory marker Continued on page 13 April 2018 CLEDOG net 5

Q Do Race and Siena share your love for animals A Our animals truly are our family I have worked with so many animal rescues over the years and it wasn t long before that passion was passed on to my children One year my daughter asked if we could have her birthday party at Geauga County s Rescue Village She did not want any presents but instead asked that each of her guests bring a bag of food for the shelter animals By the end of the day we were able to give them a mountain of food supplies and toys favorites and the answers change from time to time They are all so special to us and comfort us in so many ways The kids tease me and say that the dogs like me better than they like them I just think it s because I am the one who feeds them most times and they sleep with me in my bed But when I see the dogs with my kids it s clear that they are the favorites Siena told CLE DOG that Mom sometimes heats up leftover fish or meat and mixes it with a little kibble for the boys She joked that Mom feeds Gunner and Bruno better than them Q Have the dogs ever gone to work with you A The dogs have gone to work with me for National Bring Your Dog to Work Day and for special animal segments I love bringing them to work with me and it is always so much fun to see my coworkers interact with them I just always feel bad for all the fur that is left behind on Wayne s and Todd s suits Q Do you think CLE is a dog friendly town A I think Cleveland has done a wonderful job in making our city more dog friendly There are wonderful events that welcome dogs and even restaurants that you can dine with your pet I love walking along Chagrin Falls and see all of the water bowls outside of the establishments welcoming and accommodating our children with fur STEFANI SCHAEFER DOG MOM TO GUNNER THE GOLDEN RETRIEVER AND BRUNO THE COTON DE TULEAR AND CAT MOM TO LITTERMATES MARCO AND POLO Breeder or Shelter Rescue Both I am a true believer and supporter of animal rescue The majority of my animals throughout my life were brought to me by God But I also am a true believer in good solid breeders I have also had animals from breeders And to me they are ALL the greatest gifts on Earth no matter where they came from Flexi or Web Leashes Both Regular or Raw Feeding Regular feeding But I have to admit that I am very weak when my boys flash their begging faces at me Since I am convinced that they are human sometimes I let them eat like a human too Within reason Free Feeding or Fixed Meal Schedule Fixed meal schedule for my dogs But free feeding for my cats Your Bed or Dog Bed My bed by night Stefani with all her fur kids RIP Lola the bunny On another occasion I hosted an event at a local kennel and my kids came with us They were ages 7 and 8 at the time and they were so moved and emotional over each animal s story written on the cage that they wrote five songs about the dogs when we got home that night Stefani grew up in the music industry and toured the country with the Bob Hope USO Troupe and her mother owns a performing arts center Q Do Race and Siena help out with animal chores A They are super responsible and helpful with our animals I always do backyard cleanup but this past year for my birthday they surprised me by cleaning up the winter bombs for me truly one of the greatest presents ever Q Who do the dogs like the best A I have added all of the animals into my life for the joy of my children But the bottom line is they add so much joy to ALL of our lives We always tell each other who is each of our 12 All things DOG in Northeast Ohio There are so many beautiful areas here on the East Side that we love to take the dogs to We are so fortunate to have so many beautiful Metroparks to take advantage of Dog Park or Metropark Both My children and I love to take the boys for walks But we always keep them on a leash or else Gunner would be in California in a matter of minutes Q So what about all that pet hair and being on television A When I first started in the news business 25 years ago I had four cats at the time I was always so concerned about looking unprofessional with cat hair all over my outfit But I quickly got to a point that it didn t matter I go to work every day with an extra amount of cat and dog hair on my clothes It doesn t bother me now it s like a badge of honor When I see my babies fur on me it makes me think of them and smile Doggie Daycare or Daily Walk Daily walk But I think doggy daycare is wonderful for families especially with one dog who loves to socialize My boys get lots of interaction with their human teenagers and their cat brothers Q What s a perfect night for you A Having both my teenagers home They are both homebodies as am I and we love to spend time together Our couch has three ottomans so it is like one giant dog bed On any given night you will see us three humans with our four fur babies all snuggling together That is a perfect night for me Trainer or Homeschool We have tried both And we still have a lot of work to go Pet sitter or Boarding Pet sitter We have boarded in the past but I love to keep all of my animals in their own environment When we come home and if the dogs are boarding then the cats are so love starved It almost seems like we didn t miss a beat when the animals all can stay at the house together Plus I have cameras all over and I can spy on them when we are away Purebred or Mix Both They are all God s creation and that s what makes every single dog purebred or mix simply amazing

HAVING A SUCCESSFUL DOG PARK EXPERIENCE By Susan Spisak S Seen any of those hilarious YouTube viral videos of the dramatic Husky named Dakota who always plays dead howls and refuses to leave his favorite dog park Dakota s not alone in loving off leash fenced parks they re a great place for neutral and well socialized dogs to romp exercise and blow off steam But before you and Buddy head out to one of these area parks consider a few things so your dog is protected Off leash parks aren t for every dog especially if he has aggressive or resource guarding tendencies If he s shy skittish or overwhelmed by canine interaction it may be stressful Any in his face dogs may create a negative reaction think barking teeth baring and growling You don t want hostile behavior generated from what was to be a group play date Don t take him if he s not trained especially in the come command Ditto if he mounts other dogs to dominate this won t be well received Stay away from off leash parks that have a pond or dog beach if he s not a decent swimmer and even if he is he should wear a life vest And if you ve recently adopted him you ll need time to understand his personality before embarking on the park experience He should be healthy and up to date on all preventatives and vaccinations See Dr Katelyn Kelley s recommendations on page 16 Females should either be spayed or not in heat and it s best if males are neutered altered males may bully intact males And if you have a pup wait until he s over four months even if he s been vetted and altered any earlier and he s still susceptible to disease Once you decide an off leash park is right for your dog scope out your preferred place without him Ask other visitors when the busy times are you may want to avoid these times initially Do owners pay attention to their pets Is the park clean with shaded areas and benches Make sure the gates and fencing are secure And if you have a small breed is there a designated separate play area for him Read the posted rules and hours Each park is different some have age restrictions on accompanying children toy restrictions breeds etc If you can take toys don t take expensive ones because you may lose them 14 All things DOG in Northeast Ohio to another Rover Understand the state rules that apply including wearing a current license and rabies tag and that you ll be responsible for any injury or damage your dog causes Brush up on park etiquette No prong metal or training collars they can get tangled and even choke during a wrestling match A flat or quick release collar is safer Take your own water and travel bowl parks may have bowls or fountains but they can be a breeding ground for germs Clean up after your dog Parks may have waste disposal bags but take extras in case the dispenser is empty Leave his treats and any human food at home Don t use these parks as your dog s only form of exercise He may be too rambunctious and overeager when he arrives If you live near your destination leash him up and walk there or hit a dog friendly open air space first This will take the edge off before meeting the other canines When you arrive at the park keep your pal leashed until you re both inside the entrance holding area if there is one If there s a large group of dogs near the entry wait till they disperse it can create tension in your boy Once he s playing keep a close eye on him and stay nearby While it s nice to chat with other dog lovers it can be distracting Understand his body language and mannerisms and other dogs as well so you can avert incidents Check out this quick read at positively com dog training understanding dogs canine bodylanguage If his play becomes a bit rowdy sidetrack your guy for several minutes to calm him If you spot any threatening behavior leave immediately Do have your phone with you for emergency purposes only Be sure to have the animal control warden s contact number in the event there s an aggressive dog and his owner s not taking action keep your cool don t argue with the owner over bad behavior If a problem arises or if your dog appears tired the best thing to do is go home If it was successful and you and your bud enjoyed it make time for future days in the park
