Important to plan early for your retirementOpportunity, quality, community: the value of Summerfield70 Little River Road, Braidwood NSWwww.summerfield.com.au | 1300 73 79 70There is common thinking that many people leave retirement decisions such as where to live when downsizing or seeking a new beginning until too late. They leave it until their opportunity to fully enjoy retirement and community living and community spirit is diminished. People need to plan early when the best financial and personal decisions can be made. With respect to planning for a retirement home the newly released Invest+Retire™ package at Summerfield seems to tick all the boxes. Summerfield is a thriving over 55’s aordable luxury estate at the vibrant community spirited Braidwood between Canberra and Batemans Bay, has really hit on a formula where strategic financial and personal planning for future retirement as to where to live can be worked through in a very strategic and proactive manner. So what is Invest+Retire™ all about. It really is very simple. Identify where you want to live and a property in an over 55’s freehold estate and purchase as an investment property. Check value and amenity. Look at rentability and if there are any rental underwrites or guarantees. Take advantage of tax deprecation benefits in your own personal circumstances or in your Self Managed Super Fund (SMSF). With the current interest rates at an all-time low there is no better time to set up your financial future, while you are working, for your future over 55’s work slow down or retirement. Fantastic lock in rates over five years can now be achieved which will set you up so well for the future. Importantly, you need to consider the impediments imposed in the banking world for those who are over 65 to borrow, or who only have a relatively low income. It is important to set all this up while you are working with a reasonable income. Flexibility to sell your home when you want to optimise value is important. For many their home is a major asset and accordingly when selling it to downsize or move to an over 55s, it is important that it can be done at the most opportune time and not in a rush. Invest+Retire™ allows that as you have identified and purchased your retirement home and it is earning an income. A real advantage of freehold such as at Summerfield is that you can sell your property at any time and keep all the capital growth. There is no exit fees or lock in. A key facet of Summerfield and Invest+Retire is that a rental underwrite, which establishes a base rent plus you keep whatever excess is received or a rental guarantee is available. This provides you with total peace of mind that your investment property is earning at all times. Summerfield is constantly looking for approved people to rent and establishing a database of all prospects. There are many over 55’s who would love to rent at Summerfield for a short or long period of time and enjoy the clean, crisp, country air and the wonderful, community spirit. All in all the Summerfield Invest+Retire™ package just released looks like a real winner. Another way to implement Invest+Retire is that children in their 40s and 50s are mostly on good incomes and can aord an investment property, whilst often parents who have some cash to contribute don’t have an income to allow them to borrow easily. One way we see to provide a win-win is that the children buy the asset with some contribution or loan from the parents and the parents then rent back the property to cover the mortgage. Call Jane 1300 737 970 for a confidential discuss on how this new innovative package can benefit you.At Summerfield Estate in historic Braidwood NSW, residents of the over 55s independent living community live amongst the rolling hills of the countryside and breathe the fresh, clean, country air. The best part? The lifestyle of your dreams combines the best of both worlds: country living with ease of access to the city. Braidwood is an easy distance to the amenities of the major hubs: Canberra is just an hour away by car, and you can be in Sydney in three. From surfers to skiers and everyone in between, Braidwood is the best place to base yourself for retirement. It’s the perfect location to explore the region on weekend adventures, road trips and luxurious getaways – no matter the season. The town is just under an hour’s drive from the sparkling seas of Batemans Bay and the NSW South Coast, for those who enjoy the glittering coastline and days spent by the beach. And for those who are more inclined to take a trip inland, Summerfield is also positioned just two hours from Cooma – the gateway to the ski fields and stunning vistas of the Snowy Mountains. For those looking for a tree-change, visiting family and friends will be a breeze due to Braidwood’s central location, while visitors will love to drop in and check out all Braidwood and Summerfield have to oer. Summerfield represents extraordinary value for money with its designer three-bedroom, two-bathroom, two car homes, in a unique and central location. All the homes at Summerfield are freehold, with no exit fees, coming in at around $600,000 – half the price of Sydney and two-thirds the price of Canberra. Summerfield ranks their luxury homes at 122% better value for money than homes in Sydney, 54% better than Canberra and 44% than the NSW coastal town of Nowra. The homes at Summerfield are built to the highest standards, and have been architecturally designed to take advantage of the stunning surrounds, and to ensure that ‘country feel’ in every abode – the north-facing estate is surrounded on three sides by heritage-listed greenery. Summerfield’s state-of-the-art community facilities, that have already been built, include an indoor pool, clubhouse, gym, arts and crafts centre, and separate guest accommodation – there truly is something for everyone. Surrounded by the town’s facilities, which include a golf course, bowls club, foodie hotspots, historic buildings with a rich history and national parks, you’ll want for nothing when it comes to keeping busy and exploring the region. In addition, Summerfield Estate also sits beside the Braidwood Multipurpose Service (MPS), which, when completed this month, will provide a range of tailored healthcare services for the local community, including community health facilities, residential aged care beds and a dedicated emergency department. Summerfield presents an opportunity to become a part of the tight-knit and very supportive estate community – where residents come together to enjoy and explore their new home. You’ll also become a part of the wider Braidwood community, with a number of events and clubs that will ensure a bustling social life year-round.“Summerfield represents an incredible opportunity for anyone looking to retire to a quality home and live a laid-back country lifestyle.”

18Retirement AustraliaRetirement AustraliaRetirement AustraliaRetirement Australia SECTION19HEALTH CARE & MOBILITY EQUIPMENTThe global spread of COVID-19 has changed the way we spend our days. Self-isolation, social dis-tancing, frequent sanitizing and wearing protective masks have limited people’s ability to continue their normal daily routines. This creates special challenges for those with mobility issues -- especially for at-risk seniors and those with pre-existing medical conditions. Simple activities like running errands or just enjoying a breath of fresh air seem much riskier than they once did. As a result, many mobility-challenged individuals are opting to remain in their homes. Both physically and emotionally, this is not a good situation. However, the fact of the matter is that mobility aids like the Afi scooter can actually augment their users’ interaction with the outside world while providing an additional degree of protection. Beyond the obvious advantages of reliable, on-demand personalized transportation across a wide variety of terrains, these scoot-ers provide some important benefi ts. For example, the fear of contagion from potential disease carriers has made public transportation a non-option for numerous people. In many places around the globe buses, trams and metros are either running on severely restricted schedules, with limited numbers of passengers, or have ceased to operate entirely. Even where public transportation continues to operate normally, many people are wary of using it.In this regard, the Afi scooter provides users with a unique plus: instead of sharing their space with countless others, they ride alone, or alongside another family member or friend of their choosing -- in control of their own environment and traveling companions. This is especially important for those considered to be most at-risk from COVID-19.No one knows how long we’re going to have to continue living with COVID-19, when – or if – things will “return to normal”. At times like this it’s essential to do whatever we can to maintain our quality of life.Clearly, nothing can take the place of proper behavior – social distancing, wearing masks and emphasizing personal hygiene. But, in addition to stability, safety and convenience, vehicles like Afi scooter also give people the freedom to keep rolling along, even in the time of corona. Afi kim Electric Vehicles is a global leader in developing, manufacturing and marketing Mobility Scooters. The company is fully owned by KIBBUTZ AFIKIM, one of the largest kibbutzim in Israel and is located in the Jordan Valley in the north of the country.Since 1978 the company has been a pioneer in the fi eld of mobility scooters, with the introduction of the world’s fi rst mobility scooter with full suspension, the world’s fi rst folding scooter and more innovative solutions. Based on extensive experience of more than four decades and a strong in-house Research and Development department, the company continues to drive meaningful improvements for users and new opportunities for partners.Today, we offer mid-size Multi-Purpose scoot-ers, Max size All Train All Weather scooters, recreational scooters and a large range of accessories for drivers. For more info visit our website: www.afi scooters.com or call us: 0419943565Rolling Along in the Time of Corona20Retirement AustraliaRetirement Australia

Aglobally renowned surgeon, Dr Birman has performed more than 1,500 cochlear implant and hearing restorative surgeries for children and adults of all ages—from three months to well over 90 years. The link between hearing loss and dementia, by Clinical Professor Catherine BirmanBy the age of 65, one in three people will have hearing loss. Hearing loss in adults requires greater effort to listen and understand speech. For many people, the onset of hearing loss is insidious, and often they thinkthat others mumble or don’t speak clearly. Hearing loss and the impact on your lifeStudies show hearing loss can be associated with social withdrawal, isolation, depression and anxiety, and is an independent risk factor for dementia. A Lancet article on preventable causes of dementia, published in 2017, highlighted that hearing loss was the largest of the potentially reversible factors that are responsible for dementia. In fact, hearing loss was a major factor in 9% of dementia. By helping reduce the impact of hearing loss—with hearing aids and cochlear implants—we may be able to have a flow on effect and help reduce dementia and improve quality of life. The importance of hearing tests for older peopleFor people over 50 years, having regular hearing tests with an audiologist and managing hearing loss in a timely manner is very important. This could be with hearing aids, and for people with severe or profound sensorineural hearing loss—with cochlearimplants. Fields of purple at Bridestowe Lavender EstateStunning elds of lavender outside of Europe may come as a surprise to some, but Tasmania has similar climate conditions to the Lavender regions of Provence, France. In 1921, London Per-fumer grew the rst lavender owers from a modest pocket of seeds obtained from the French Alps. Today, Bridestowe Laven-der Estate is recognised as the world’s largest privately-owned lavender farm. Wander down the elds taking colourful photos, which are best captured in the mid-summer months when the lavender is in full bloom. Try a lavender latte at the café, or have a spot of afternoon tea, complimented with a blueberry and lavender jam scone.Visit the elds on the Perfect Tasmania 13 day tour with AAT Kings Wineglass Bay, Freycinet National ParkWhen visiting Tasmania, you cannot leave Freycinet off your list. This stunning curve of coastline hosts one of the world’s most beautiful beaches, Wineglass Bay. If you love a brisk walk through coastal woodland, don’t miss this highlight, a worthwhile reward for the effort of an incline. A heritage train ride offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of rail travel in Australia. Australia’s rail history dates back more than 160 years. As a result of newer construction materials and methods that conquered past engineering difculties, some of the early railway lines have been bypassed, made obsolete by tunnels and new routes, or were never connected into the main rail network. Many of these have been given new life as heritage railways and reopened as popular tourist attractions that allow their passengers to experience the smell of steam, the sound of the whistle blowing as the locomotive chugs along, and the sights and stories of bygone days. Using a restored steam locomotive or an early diesel or electric engine, they recreate the authenticity and elegance of the train journeys of yesteryear, with original rolling stock and a specialist carriage eet of immaculate sitting, sleeping and dining cars completing the experience.Regardless of the type of locomotive taking you on your journey, there is usually spectacular scenery to enjoy – most heritage tracks wind their way through fern gullies, rainforests, gumtree covered mountains, farmland, or picturesque coastal and country vistas before arriving photo-worthy historic stations.HERE’S OUR TOP 5 BEST HERITAGE AND TOURIST RAILWAYS IN AUSTRALIA. CLIMB ABOARD FOR A FASCINATING GLIMPSE OF THE WORKING HISTORY AND GOLDEN AGE OF RAIL TRAVEL:RAILWAY ADVENTURES - RIDING BACK IN TIME ON A HERITAGE TRAINThe Pufng Billy, Victoria Railway Adventures - Victorian Steam AdventureOne of the most famous steam train journeys in Australia, the Pufng Billy is also one of the nest preserved steam railways in the world. Built in the early 1900s as a low cost 2’6” gauge line, its purpose was to open up the remote area between Victoria’s Belgrave and Gembrook townships. This century-old steam train and its iconic open-sided carriages run along a 24-kilometre track through lush rainforest, fern gullies and farmlands, before offering a close-up view of the spectacular mountain scenery of Victoria’s Dandenong Ranges. West Coast Wilderness Railway, Tasmania Railway Adventures - Tasmania by Rail, Road and RiverSituated on the west coast of Tasmania, this formidable steam train journey chugs along 30 kilometres of century-old tracks, including an iconic ABT Rack and Pinion section – the rst of its kind in Australia – which enabled the steam locomotives to traverse the steep slopes.Travelling through ancient rainforests and plunging gorges, the railway line was originally used to transport copper from the mines in Queenstown to the harbour at Strahan. For many years, it was the only transport link between Queenstown and the rest of Tasmania. The journey brings to life the harsh demands of mining life and the resilience of the people who lived along the steep King River Gorge.38Retirement AustraliaRetirement Australia HOLIDAYS & TRAVEL

The Gulander, QueenslandRailway Adventures - Queensland SavannahRailway Adventures - Outback QueenslandTravelling across the Gulf of Carpentaria’s remote wetlands, grasslands, and arid Savannah territory, the Gulander is a rail-motor journey unlike any other.Originally built to connect the once bustling river port of Normanton with the Croydon goldelds, this legendary, heritage-listed railway is also rich in historical and scenic wonders. It offers a fascinating insight into pioneering history, passing the old digs from the Croydon gold rush to Station 119, the most northern camp of Burke and Wills. The Kuranda Scenic Railway, QueenslandRailway Adventures - Queensland SavannahUp in far north Queensland, this relatively short journey takes about two hours one way, up into the hinterland behind the city of Cairns. Passing spectacular waterfalls and travelling through World Heritage-listed rainforest via some 15 tunnels and 55 bridges, the Scenic Railway is one of Australia’s most popular rail experiences. It was originally built to service the mining industry between Kuranda and Herberton in the 1880s, when supplies could not get through to mining camps because of torrential rain. Several miners starved, but many more rail workers lost their lives during the dangerous decade of construction. After roads were improved from Cairns, the railway was converted to tourist use in the 1930s.Scott McGregor’s Railway Adventures tour is more than just a holiday, it is a unique way to experience the world. The East Kimberley is a diverse area of Western Australia more than twice the size of Victoria. The region is some of the oldest country in the world and indigenous peoples arrived around 41,000 years ago. The East Kimberley is bordered to the south by the red sand dunes of the Great Sandy Desert, to the east by the Northern Territory and to the north west by the Kimberley Plateau and the Timor Sea.Kununurra is the Gateway to the East Kimberley and is the largest town in Western Australia north of Broome, with a stable population of over 5000. However with residents on outlying farms, itinerant workers and tourists the population can double. The lovely town of Kununurra is quite young, as it was established in 1961 by the Western Australian and Federal Governments, as the main administrative and support centre for the developing Ord River Irrigation scheme (ORI). It has an abundance of water due to the creation of beautiful lake Argyle and the Ord Diversion Dam. Today the town is your perfect base from which to explore the many amazing adventures, unforgettable experiences and breathtakingly beautiful sights of the East Kimberley.Sydney and two-thirds the price of Canberra. The area was settled by the Pioneering Durack family in1882. Patrick Durack immigrated from Ireland to Queensland and in 1879 he and his Brother Michael set out on a two and a half year cattle drive, overlanding 7250 head of cattle and 200 horses from Cooper Creek in Western Queensland to the Ord Valley in the East Kimberley. The 4,700 kilometre journey is the longest of its type ever recorded.KununurraKununurra- Oasis of the Kimberley- Oasis of the Kimberley42Retirement AustraliaRetirement Australia HOLIDAYS & TRAVEL

The Durack’s established Argyle Downs and Ivanhoe station and created a family dynasty in the region. They exported cattle through the Port of Wyndham to markets as far away as Africa and North America. Wyndham is only 100 kilometres north of Kununurra and was established by John Forrest in 1886 as the main trading station for the East Kimberley, after nds of Gold in Halls Creek the previous year. Thousands of miners disembarked from the ships at Cambridge Gulf heading for the goldelds. During the second world war the frontier town was attacked by Japanese aircraft as was Exmouth on the coast further south. From nearby Five Rivers Lookout visitors can enjoy spectacular views over the Ord, Forrest, King, Durack and Pentacost Rivers where they join and enter the Cambridge Gulf.Another short drive from Kununurra through the Carr Boyd Ranges takes you up to the relocated, now famous Durack Homestead. The Homestead was constructed at Argyle Downs in the Ord Valley in 1895 and became a popular place to socialise in the East Kimberley. The homestead was made of crushed termite mounds and limestone blocks. In the 1970’s the Ord River was ooded to create beautiful lake Argyle, Australia’s second largest reservoir with a surface area of 700 square kilometres.Be sure to call at the Durack / Argyle homestead which was dismantled block by block and reassembled on high ground near Lake Argyle and is now the Argyle Museum. You can also board a fascinating cruise from below the massive wall of Lake Argyle taking you fty ve kilometres downstream on the Ord River to Lake Kununurra. Only a few kilometres out of Kununurra is Mirima National Park also known as the Hidden Valley. The sandstone formations here resemble the domes of the famous Bungle Bungles (Purnululu National Park) which is why they are often referred to as the mini Bungle Bungles. The actual Purnululu National park and the Majestic Domes known as the Bungle Bungles can be easily accessed via a sightseeing, xed wing or helicopter scenic ight from Kununurra airport. One can enjoy views over the pack saddle irrigation area, Kununurra, Lake Argyle and the ancient geological wonders of the National Park and the Bungle Bungles.Travelling across the rich, fertile black soil plain known as “Kununurra Clay” you will be surrounded by irrigation crops which include mango, citrus, watermelon, rockmelon, pumpkin, chickpea, chia and sandalwood. Learn all about the worlds most prized fragrant timber with a visit to the Sandalwood Museum.Another natural attraction in the area is the abundance of birdlife. Get on board the unique sunset Wetlands Cruise where you are likely to see Osprey, Brolgas, Cormorants, Ibis, Egrets, Corellas, Herons, Whistling Ducks, Magpie Geese , Sea Eagles, Darters and more. Ad an amazing sunset, some nibbles and a glass of Sparkling wine, and you have the perfect end to another magical East Kimberley day.The Argyle diamond mine near Kununurra is the world’s largest producer of diamonds and produces 20 million carats of diamonds annually. It’s the world’s largest producer of cognac and natural champagne diamonds and famous for precious, rare and valuable pink diamonds. Don’t miss a tour of this amazing facility with a chance purchase your dream sparkly jewel. The best time to visit the East Kimberley is in the middle of the year when the days are cooler and the humidity is low. Getting there is now easier than ever before, on the Kununurra Express! Virgin Airlines now has a limited number of direct ights from Melbourne to Kununurra and return for 2020. Have you ever owned a dog? If so, you’ll know why they’re known as man’s (or woman’s!) best friend. Dogs offer unconditional love and bring joy, laughter and a bit of fun to those around them. That’s why VMCH is launching its ‘Pawfect Companions’ program, to enrich the lives of older people in its 11 aged care residences. With community support, VMCH hopes to fund fortnightly dog therapy sessions for over 980 residents for the next two years. VMCH has partnered with another not-for-prot organisation, who believe the human-animal bond leads to a more enriched and fullled life – for both humans and dogs!Sometimes the best therapist has fur and four legs!Their belief is scientically backed, with therapy animals proven to have a positive impact on individual’s social, emotional, physical and physiological health, improving quality of life and wellbeing. “As a not-for-prot organisation, we don’t receive funding for programs like this. But we do like to go the extra mile for the people we support and do what we can to further enrich their lives,” says VMCH CEO Sonya Smart.“Many of our residents had pet dogs before they moved into residential aged care, and often talk of their beloved companions.”Resident Luciano says, “ I used to train Greyhounds for many years. Having Roxy (an employee’s dog) come in occasionally reminds me of when I used to have my dogs. They just want to be patted and they don’t ask for much.” 44Retirement AustraliaRetirement AustraliaRetirement AustraliaRetirement Australia AGED CARE

Resident Bernie (pictured) says, “Pet therapy is good for everyone; it’s uplifting and makes everyone happy. When we have had a pet visit, even if people just sit back and watch, it’s amazing to see the joy in everyone’s faces.”All aged care residents have really done it tough recently. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when visits from loved ones stopped, social outings became impossible and boredom set in, the focus became on creating entertainment within their home. “We’re always asking, what else can we do to help keep our residents’ days interesting and fun? How can we help individuals come together? Ease loneliness? Bring smiles to their faces?” says Sonya. “Donations will also help us purchase some interactive ‘companion dogs’ that have built-in sensor technology, so they respond to petting and motion, much like real-life pets. These dogs provide comfort, companionship, help to reduce stress and are always available to our residents in between ‘real-life’ dog visits.“We hope members of the community will consider helping us to enhance the lives of our aged care residents.”If you’d like to donate, visit: vmch.com.au/pawfectcompanions or call 1800 036 377. Slater was only a baby when he was diagnosed with a brain tumour, which slowly wrapped around his brain stem, making it inoperable. His medical team have done everything possible to stop Slater’s tumour from growing and affecting his development, but unless something changes, Slater will not make it.His journey has seen him learn how to walk, to talk, and to swallow once more. Slater is now six years old and continues to be fed through a tube. Chemotherapy and radiation treatment have left him with third degree burns behind his ears.Despite his unimaginable journey, Slater is forever the ghter, and keeps winning over hearts. “It’s beautiful to watch everyone fall in love with Slater, as he’s the most special little boy,” Slater’s mum, Bianca, says.Sadly, Bianca has to face the reality that there is only a 20 per cent chance of seeing her son’s 7th birthday.Right now, people like you are funding vital medical equipment and long-term research into childhood brain cancer. Any of these projects could lead to a breakthrough in how we diagnose, treat, or even cure this life-threatening childhood illness.Your donations could help fund the vital brain cancer research which Slater, and others like him so desperately need.By including the Children’s Hospital Foundation in your Will, any gift you make, no matter how big or small, will carry on funding life-saving work long into the future. The decision you make now could change the course for many kids just like Slater.Jude has lost a child and has now left a gift in her Will. She says:“Not everyone can leave tens of thousands of dollars, but if everyone left something, it would make a huge difference. If you can help just one little baby, it’s worth it. It can’t prevent what happened to my son, but it may prevent other families going through something similar. The research you fund could one day help your children, grand-children, or great-grandchildren.”Your decision to leave a gift gives you peace of mind knowing that the charity you have supported for many years, can still receive funding long after you are gone. It ensures that your wishes are carried out in the way you planned. Importantly, it costs nothing now.To save just one child’s life, it’s worth doing everything we possibly can. From big cities to country towns and isolated homesteads, The Salvation Army gives hope where it’s needed most to over 152,000 people every yearA recent review of Salvation Army clients found more than 60 percent of people who ac-cess the Salvos’ Moneycare  nancial counselling service are women (2). This includes helping write a budget and repayment plans, and assisting with debt collectors. Divorced with adult children, Elizabeth was grieving the loss of both parents, living with her sister in a new town, battling health issues and had piling bills.Eventually, Elizabeth took the advice of her counsellor and contacted The Salvation Army’s Moneycare service. “A weight lifted off my shoulders…”she says. “We got all my  nances worked out.”With her life back on track, Elizabeth began to volunteer with her local Salvos and Money-care service. More than one quarter of the clients who recently accessed Moneycare’s services were over 55 years of age (2). “Older women have become the unexpected face of poverty in Australia,” says Salvation Army Of cer Major Paul Moulds. “Their life as a primary carer, in the majority of cases, sets back their superannuation and employment options later in life. The Salvation Army is committed to coming alongside Australians in need to love, serve, give hope and transform their lives. 51I am writing to express my sincerest gratitude for the most generous gift of our family holiday for the third anniversary of our precious son gaining his angels wings. We were very humbled that you thought to offer this holiday to us and were blown away by your generosity from the ights and accom-modation to the dolphin watching cruise and food vouchers. The Retreat is an incredible facility for families to escape treatment or grief, everything has been thought of. We did not feel that we were in sterile holiday accommodation but rather in a beautiful house with all the comforts of home. We appreciated every little detail. The beach towels, step stools for the children, cot, change table, books, games, shing gear, beach equipment, movies, pantry items, kids’ cutlery and so much more. Each day I noticed something new that contributed to us having a complete, relaxing break from reality. We truly feel that we escaped. You gave us permission to get on a plane and run away from work, home, responsibilities and people and I’m not sure even we realised just how much we needed to do that. I am quite a highly-strung person and I have not felt that relaxed in a very long time. We were given time to spend together as a family without the day to day stresses. We were able to stop, reect and remember our darling boy and were sur-rounded by signs that he was there with us. He was in every sunrise and sunset, in the rain, wind and rainbows. He was so close to us every moment and to be honest, I didn’t want to leave. I have left a big part of my heart in that home and we know that it will become a special holiday destination for our little family in the future. You handed us a gift that we could never have afforded ourselves at this point in time and we are so very grateful. I cannot stop thinking about what a wonderful person must have been to have left the house. What a truly amazing gift to leave to families like ours who are facing the hardest challenges that any parent should have to. 2019 Australia Cancer Research Foundation Grants Announced. It’s because of the generosity of people like you that Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF) is able to provide funding to these projects. Announced at the end of 2019, we have two visionary world-leading projects to share. ACRF, with guidance and direction from our Medical Research Advisory Committee, seek out the boldest and most innovative cancer research projects to back each year. Australia is constantly punching above its weight in the area of cancer research and these two projects are further proof of that:The ACRF Child Cancer Liquid Biopsy Program, Children’s Cancer Institute (NSW)The current precision medicine treatment recommendations for children are based on an invasive and often painful procedure - tissue biopsy.Whilst we know cancer cells are constantly evolving and changing, repeated biopsies are usually not feasible or ethical thus limiting the ability to safely monitor disease progression. The $3.5 million grant will fund next-generation sequencing technology to develop highly sensitive and minimally-invasive tests for children with cancer, using blood and body fluid samples. The program aims to improve diagnosis, predict relapse earlier, monitor treatment response and enhance delivery of the right treatment to the right child at the right time. Children’s Cancer Institute’s Executive Director, Professor Michelle Haber AM says, “While the advent of personalised therapies is heralding a new era in childhood cancer treatment, the full potential of this approach is limited by remaining challenges in the ability to safely and sensitively monitor disease progression, clonal evolution, tumour heterogeneity, development of resistance and critically, the emergence of new therapeutic vulnerabilities.”Bright Mind Extrordinary People“I didn’t have any side effects with the SABR technique and I had just three treatments “54Retirement AustraliaRetirement Australia WILLS, BEQUESTS & FOUNDATIONS

“This significant investment from ACRF to fund the ACRF Liquid Biopsy Program will ultimately enable this capability, such that all high-risk paediatric cancer patients throughout the country will be able to have their therapy optimised by genomic profiling both at the time of initial biopsy, and throughout their cancer journey; providing a clear path to improved patient outcome in the foreseeable future.”ACRF Program for Resolving Cancer Complexity and Therapeutic Resistance, Walter and Eliza Hall Institute.Using cutting-edge technologies this program will study individual cancers and the environment they interact with, at a single cell level. The $3.5 million ACRF funding will enable a major program of research, focused on the analysis of single cells taken from patient tumours and models for a range of cancers. This research will discover the triggers that drive cancer development, how genetic diversity in cancers affects treatment efficacy, and develop better ways of personalising cancer therapies to conquer the challenges in predicting and improving patients’ treatment response and overcoming drug resistance. “The complexity and diversity of cancers at a single cell level, and the cells that make up the tumour microenvironment, is poorly understood, and in many cases, it is difficult to predict how a patient will respond to therapy,” Chief Investigator, Professor Clare Scott said.“This important investment from the ACRF will enable us to gain a deeper understanding of how cancers develop at a single cell level, leading to breakthroughs in how we personalise cancer therapy that will have a real impact for patients in the future, improving treatment response and overcoming treatment resistance. We hope to see both projects producing findings that will support and improve the outcome of each individual diagnosed with this devasting disease. We are delighted to direct our donors’ funds to initiate these two remarkable cancer research programs. Both are underpinned by compelling science and executed by world-class researchers. We’ve come so far, but we can’t stop now. Please help us support more life-saving research – donate now.Retirement AustraliaRetirement Australia55 WILLS, BEQUESTS & FOUNDATIONS

Our retirement years offer the opportunity to try things we have perhaps never had the time to do before, to learn a new language, take-up art, or study history, literature or philosophy. But where to start? It is not easy starting something new at any time, but it is perhaps even more challenging when you are older and less used to stepping out of your comfort zone. As Jill Murray, a researcher at Macquarie university comments “Because we live in a culture where age is frequently constructed in less than optimistic terms, the associated stereotypes can sometimes discourage people from taking the rst step towards what can be an exciting, enriching and even life-changing new area of interest. There are many examples of successful older learners who have found the experience has opened up a whole new world of knowledge, skill, cultural understanding and enjoyment.” WILLS, BEQUESTS & FOUNDATIONS58Retirement AustraliaRetirement Australia

Indeed the benets of lifelong learning in our older years are widely recognised; put simply, it is good for our health. Findings from a 2012 UK research project revealed improvements in life satisfaction, reductions in self-reported depression and reduced GP visits amongst those who participated in learning activities. In addition, participation in learning can help reduce cognitive decline, slow the onset of dementia in some people, and overcome loneliness by creating opportunities to meet new people and make new friends. Professor Stephen McNair sums it up when he says : “[Education is] particularly important for those in the latter stages of life when one is less mobile and having to cope with the death of partners and friends: getting out of bed and feeling one has a purpose can be particularly challenging.” So, where to start? There are adult education providers across Australia many of whom offer courses especially tailored to the retirees. In Sydney the WEA offers over 300 courses a term ranging from music, art and languages; to a variety of humanities topics including history, philosophy and politics. The courses range in length from one hour through to ten weeks and many are scheduled in the daytime to suit the preference of retired learners. (They also offer 10% discount for Seniors card holders and being a not-for-prot means their fees are kept low.)One long term student at WEA commented, when asked why she enjoys coming to courses, “I am now over 85 years old and my friends say I act and look like I’m 60 or 70. It’s because I am pumping my brain regularly and learning new things at WEA”.Whilst no one can promised that retuning to learning will knock 20 years off you, what is true is that it is never too late to learn something new, and whatever stage of life you are at your brain health will benet from the exercise of learning. So to, of course, will your social life. You can browse the courses on offer at WEA Sydney via their website https://www.weasydney.com.au/ or order a copy of their termly printed brochure by calling 0192 642 781.To hear more comments from WEA students and tutors on the benets and pleasures of learning in later years visit the WEA’s Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/weasydney/

Established over 70 years ago by Mr B.J. Young (Bill) after he returned from World War 1 in 1946. Mr Young had served as a member of the RAAF and felt he needed to give a patriotic tribute to Britain by naming his business after Windsor Castle and the Royal Family. And so, Windsor Wonderworld was born.Windsor quickly became a name nationally accepted as the leader in the blind industry, a position it still retains - recognised locally in the Newcastle, Maitland, Lower Hunter regions, Lake Macquarie and Port Stephens areas. In 1967, Windsor was the first in Newcastle to supply the famous 25mm Invisorama “Slimline” Venetian. Windsor patented the design of the Steel Curved Venetian Blind Slat and became the first blind manufacturer to use Terylene cables and tapes. This put Windsor at the forefront of design and technology in blind manufacturing. With the installation of a state of the art venetian blind making machine in 1982, Windsor went from strength to strength, forging a lucrative market in venetian blinds. This machine brought with it enormous customer benefits - particularly in terms of production output, economy and order processing, Windsor embarked on a new stage in history. With the passing of Bill in 2013, his legacy was passed down to his second-youngest son Craig, who had been part of the business since he was a boy. Craig has also been responsible for the relocation of the company from its original premises in Carrington to the current location in Cardiff.Nowadays, Craig is joined in the business by wife Zdenka and a team of experience and knowledge with some staff working in the business for over 20 years. You could say collectively Windsor has over 80-90 years of combined experience and knowledge.“The business is so entrenched in family that in addition to Craig’s leadership, three out of his four brothers have been involved in the business at one stage or another before moving on to other careers,“ said Zdenka.“Our team has pride in their work, and we’re a family. We locally manufacture the popular Ziptrak Blinds and most of our other outdoor blinds and awnings that we have on offer. We cater for commercial and domestic requirements.”Windsor’s success can largely be attributed to their dedication to customer service. With an offering that combines high-quality products, value for money and above all personal service, they continue to maintain 100% satisfaction for their customers. Windsor uses only the best standard of componentry and materials, specifically designed for the Australian Environment. This ensures a long-lasting quality product which is backed by the Windsor Warranty.Always recognising the best interest of the customer. Windsor has kept and will continue to stay up-to-date with all the latest developments, ideas, technologies, trends and services standards that have become synonymous with the Windsor name. Planning ahead with RookwoodThe decision to pre-purchase is a personal one and there are many factors to consider. Some of the reasons that people choose to pre-purchase are:• By setting out your wishes and preferences, your loved ones will know exactly what you want, reducing anxiety in a dif cult time.• Some paperwork can be set up ahead of time, so your family is able to grieve without worrying about logistics.• Pre-purchasing your space in Rookwood at today’s prices means reducing the  nancial burden on your family in the future. As funeral prices rise, this is a concern for many families.• Space is running out in Sydney metropolitan cemeteries. It is estimated that the existing cemeteries will be out of space by 2035. Secure a close and convenient location now.Planning ahead by pre-purchasing is not for everyone. It is a  nancial decision which should be considered carefully, possibly at the time of estate planning and with a  nancial advisor if necessary. Some things to think about and perhaps discuss with your family.
