June 2023 Here we are halfway through the year and I am proud to say that our organization has already and continues to surpass the goals we ambitiously set out to achieve In the last quarter we successfully announced the receipt of the Audacious investment This landmark award brings The Clean Slate Initiative three quarters of the way towards funding our goal of clearing records for up to 14 million people The excitement of the Audacious award culminated in Vancouver at the TED2023 Conference where I delivered a main stage talk Not only was I proud to represent the organization but the visibility that the talk brings to the Clean Slate movement is galvanizing Indeed the TED talk has over half a million views a number that grows by the day Hot off the heels of TED2023 and the Audacious announcement I was able to elevate the issue of Clean Slate on stage with champions John Legend and Slack for Good at the Milken Institute Global Conference That opportunity for CSI continues to bear fruit resulting in potential key partnerships a feature on MSNBC and compelling content that will serve to move the needle Continuing the wave of new milieus to socialize the importance of our work I had the distinct pleasure of delivering the commencement speech at Cheyney University Being able to connect with an audience of young people to educate them on Clean Slate policies was a highlight Of course all roads this quarter led to our Second Annual Convening in Oklahoma City OK last week My team has worked tirelessly to engage our partners advocates and impacted communities to develop a program that culminated in two days of collaboration learnings recognition and inspiration I was overjoyed to see some of you there as we came together with an attendee count of 214 United for Second Chances Our team continues to grow at a rapid pace In the last few weeks we have welcomed a new Director of Campaigns and three new Campaign Strategists The response our recruiting efforts have generated is a testament to the support for and interest in our work our job posting for the Director of Talent and Culture alone has received over 900 applicants Surely a sign of the great things to come as we enter into the second half of the year Last but most certainly not least keep reading for important state updates the jewels in our advocacy crown

THE CLEAN SLATE INITIATIVE FEDERAL UPDATE We saw movement on two issues related to our federal efforts this quarter a Presidential Proclomation recognizing Second Month and the introduction of two promising measures in Congress Through a proclamation President Joe Biden declared April as Second Chance Month 2023 is the sixth consecutive year such a proclamation has been issued with President Trump signing the first in 2018 CSI used the opportunity to highlight that Clean Slate efforts are no longer hypothetical Laws are being implemented and real people are experiencing transformational changes in their lives After President Biden announced the proclamation Sheena Meade noted We have reached the point where people are starting to experience the impact of Clean Slate policies The numbers are astounding It is no surprise that the number of people benefiting from Clean Slate laws is in the millions with just two states implementing a streamlined automated system Michigan initiated its automatic record sealing law the following week providing full or partial clearance to hundreds of thousands more CSI also used the opportunity to highlight the need for continued bipartisanship as federal legislation was being prepared for introduction When we find ways to work together we have the ability to create change The only way that change lasts is if it s bipartisan and that s why Clean Slate will have such a lasting impact Ensuring that people have a second chance and access to meaningful opportunities after they have paid their debt to society increases community safety boosts local economies and alleviates workforce demands David Safavian CSI Advisory Board member native Michigander and general counsel of the American Conservative Union Foundation and Conservative Political Action Conference CPAC
