GOOD SAMARITAN CHURCH THE MESSENGER VOLUME 107 ISSUE 11 NOVEMBER 2018 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK GRIEF DEATH QUESTIONS OF FAITH Dear Beloved Recently a family member of ours died She was one of the 25 people who flew down to Mexico to celebrate our wedding over 8 years ago She was young and healthy It was unexpected The family is still in shock Her death has made me contemplate death in a way that more expected though still difficult deaths due to old age or declining health have not as much One of the things it raised in me was an awareness that as a pastor who is a good 30 years younger than the majority of our members and at a very different life stage I probably don t think about death dying and end of life as often as many others in our congregation I know for many of you attending memorial services of friends or family members is becoming a more and more regular occurrence in your life and the sense of being left behind is painful and lonely I know from talking with you that many of you have thought a great deal about your own death about your legacy about what comes next and what life looks like beyond the grave My first real experience of the death of someone close to me came when my grandmother was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer s when I was 10 She didn t die for another 10 years but it was as if she started to die slowly right before our eyes Though physically present she seemed to slip out of existence Memory loss complicates even further questions about death and souls and what in us is eternal about where we go and what happens to us and what makes us who we are I know I m not the only one in our congregation who has experienced what often feels like this strange and cruel twist on death and dying Curiosity about what comes after death has long been a preoccupation of human beings Many world religions grapple with the question even if few can give many definitive answers Interestingly the Hebrew scriptures make only vague references to an afterlife From what historians can gather a more robust theology of an afterlife and resurrection from the dead only enters Judaism when the Jewish people are in exile and the rabbinic synagogue tradition develops Perhaps they picked it up from those among whom they lived while in exile or perhaps it was the very experience of exile of homelessness and captivity and the longing needing for there to be something more than that that led the Jewish people to incorporate such beliefs Whatever the impetus for such 1 beliefs by Jesus time the Pharisees the synagogue leaders hold a robust theology of resurrection and the afterlife while the Sadducees the Temple leadership rejects such belief When you look to Jesus teachings and the interpretation of his life death and resurrection by his followers you will find all sorts of statements and beliefs about heaven and hell Hell by the way was a literal geographical place a valley where heaps of trash were burned a place no one living in Jesus time ever wanted to go We never quite know if Jesus is talking about that trash heap or an eternal place of torment when he refers to hell Sometimes it seems to be a sort of purgatory a place simply to wait that is neither good or bad Other times it seems a place where we are able to see God but unable to cross the distance Lk 16 19 31 Still other times a place where we are punished and or refined with fire Mk 9 43 Of course as with descriptions of Heaven distinguishing the difference between literal and metaphorical symbolic language is difficult Heaven is described as somewhere Jesus goes ahead of us to prepare a place God s house Jn 14 2 3 a kingdom of God where there is no more suffering Rev 21 4 and where a grand reversal happens between the first and the last Matt 20 16 And yet it is not just some place in the future after death Jesus says it has come near Matt 3 2 even makes statements that make continued on page 9

M Rev Jen Daysa represented Good Sam as our pastor while Jean Adams and Carolyn Woodard served as lay delegates with voting rights in the business meetings M The Naples United Church of Christ had a beautiful campus and a gorgeous sanctuary All sessions business meetings and worship were held at their facility UCC FALL GATHERING 2018 IN NAPLES FL M Naples United Church of Christ hosted the event On Thursday morning Pastor Jen Daysa and Carolyn Woodard drove down to Naples together so they could attend some of the training sessions being offered One of the sessions of interest was on church security and another on stewardship Late that evening Jean Adams arrived she had to work until around 7 30 and all three were ready the next morning for the classes both in the morning and afternoon We attended the two sessions by the keynote speaker on the book of Ruth In the afternoon we attended a business meeting that would acquaint us with all the issues being voted on the next morning and the budget for the upcoming year was presented Friday evening we attended a banquet and enjoyed hearing from several of the conference ministers on what is going on around the state and national settings in the UCC Saturday morning we gathered for the business meeting a town hall conversation and then the weekend conference came to a close with a great time of worship together If you have never attended a Presbyterian or UCC conference you really should plan to do so They offer a wonderful time of fellowship as well as a time of getting a clearer understanding of what the churches are doing to make our world a better place This conference was a time of uplifting spiritual renewal and fellowship Submitted by Carolyn Woodard M The keynote speaker was Rev Dr David Velasquez Levy the president of Pacific School of Religion in Berkley CA The theme of the conference was immigration and Rev Velasquez Levy taught 2 sessions on the book of Ruth and how Naomi and Ruth were both immigrants at different times in their lives In his keynote address he shared the story of Joseph and his forced immigration by his brothers into the land of Egypt and how God used Joseph and caused him to excel in his new land P The Friday night banquet offered a time of fellowship and meeting new friends 6

FROM THE PASTOR S DESK continued from page 1 it sound like it is breaking into this world and this reality now Lk 10 8 9 In one place the New Testament even gets a little mystic and claims the kingdom heaven can be found within us Lk 17 21 and for that matter we might say hell too can be found within Jesus compares the kingdom of God to everything from a mustard seed growing into a large shrub Matt 13 31 to a land owner paying his employees the same amount no matter how long they worked Matt 20 1 16 to a great feast where the privileged ones initially invited don t show up so every street person is invited Lk 14 15 24 It is all rather confusing really and we wonder what to cling to what will the afterlife look like Will it be streets lined with Gold Rev 21 21 as that strange book of Revelation describes Or is that all merely allegorical a way to attempt to convey what is indescribable and must simply be experienced I wonder if we really need to cling to that or if we can just cling to God Jesus Spirit and be clung to by the members of that Holy Trinity of love and let go of our need to know Authors and artists have left us with beautiful depictions of heaven the kingdom of God It stimulates the imagination and conjures dreams and maybe that is enough to imagine and trust simply that there is something to hope for something toward which we are moving that is beautiful beyond our wildest imaginings a community of love deeper than we could ever dream a future of shalom of peace wholeness healing a communion of God s children and God s self Maybe it is enough simply to trust what the story of Jesus promises that nothing and no one not even death itself can stop us from getting there Maybe it is enough simply to love and be loved by God and know that whatever is to come it will make sense in the light of that love I know some of you will wish I would offer better answers express a belief of certainty about heaven God knows sometimes I wish I had better answers but the truth is my faith is in God and God s love for us that I see expressed to us in Jesus the Christ I hold all the rest lightly I think in the end we will discover nothing is quite as we imagined it is better Sunday November 4th we will celebrate All Saints Day as we do every year It is a time to remember that we are part of something so much larger than what we can see feel touch and hear No in our denominations we don t officially saint people but we do celebrate lives and the mark they leave on us It will be a time for us to wonder together about what comes next to acknowledge our fears and our grief to remember our faith and celebrate together that hope we have found Peace Pastor Jen 9 MARY POPPINS SEEN AT GOOD SAM Synchrony Arts Productions brought their play Mary Poppins to Good Sam on October 20 as a dinner theatre production Gregory Allen catered the meal and as always when he cooks it was superb Rose Stauffer played the role of Mary Poppins and her spouse Leslie Kille orchestrated the music A variety of songs were incorporated into the musical and we were even invited to engage in introspection with Michael Jackon s song Man in the Mirror The actors all did a wonderful job and the team of volunteers who worked with them and led them through their roles were fantastic Maggie Becky McAllister s granddaughter played the part of one of the Banks daughters and did a wonderful job We love the relationship that we have with Synchrony Arts Productions and hope that we can enjoy many events with them in the future If any of you would like to volunteer to help with their ministry see Rose Stauffer for more information Submitted by Carolyn Woodard
