Message Belding Labor Day Committee PresentsThe 120th Labor Day CelebrationRoaring TwentiesAugust 29 – September 1, 2025
2Labor Day 2025: Grand MarshalB FoundationBELDING — It has not yet been determined how they're all going to fit in the backseat of a convertible together, but the grand marshal of this year's Labor Day parade will consist of a group of 16 people: the committee members of the B Foundation.“There is a committee with lots of members, but the Belding community is who really supports this,” B Foundation Treasurer Cathy Flynn said. “They donate money and items for the auction at our annual gala, and the whole community gets involved. And cancer is something that has affected everybody in some way, even some of the students here, so everybody gets involved.”In 2011, as the Belding High School (BHS) volleyball coach, Mikalya Linebaugh watched as her team played in “pink” games at various nearby locations. Linebaugh observed as local athletes donned special pink jerseys for these games and volunteers sold unique T-shirts to raise money for a local cancer charity. As Linebaugh was losing her father to cancer, she began to wonder why the people of Belding were working so hard to help all of those families in other communities while doing nothing to help local families, some of whom also had to be struggling. With that thought, in 2011, The B Foundation was born. The B Foundation founding committee members, from left, Cathy Flynn, Michael Ostrander and Mikayla Linebaugh stand in the approximate location in the Belding High School media center where the organization held its first meeting 15 years ago. At that time, Linebaugh's father lay dying from cancer a few miles away. — DN Photo | Tim McAllisterSince then, it has become an official 501(c) (3) charitable organization and raised more than $1 million. With that money, they have provided $1,000 each (usually in the form of gift cards) to more than 500 families as they're dealing with the terror, uncertainty, panic and potential financial hardship of a cancer diagnosis.“It comes about in a few different ways,” Linebaugh, B Foundation founder and president, explained. “It can be word of mouth, a phone call or an application through our website. After they apply, I call the family to make sure that they fit the criteria, which is they have to be a Belding resident, live in the Belding school district or be a Belding graduate, and they are actively in treatment. Then we just find out what their needs are.”The group's efforts go well beyond dropping off gift cards. They've been known to drive people to their doctor's appointments then fill up the gas tank and pay the car payment. One winter they roamed around town Christmas caroling while simultaneously distributing free bedding to needy families. Another time they brought somebody a puppy. They often pay utility bills for people, they have constructed wheelchair ramps, paid a child's tuition so the parent could concentrate on their medical bills, helped with funeral expenses, bought groceries and engaged in countless small but life-changing actions.
3In addition to helping families and individuals dealing with cancer, the foundation provides a $1,000 scholarship every year to a BHS senior who is pursuing a career in a medical or health-related field. The scholarship, which they recently doubled, is renewable up to four times for students as they follow their course of study. “Maybe you're going to be an oncologist, maybe you're going to work in physical therapy, maybe you're going into zoology to do cancer research, maybe your goal is to be a biomedical engineer,” Ostrander said. “The cost of college has increased dramatically since The B Foundation began, so we doubled it so it would help with more than just maybe buying their books.”They have accomplished all of this through myriad fundraising efforts such as their Glow Run in Lightning Bend Park (now entering its 15th autumn), “pink” football games at the high school, their annual gala/auction and sales of thousands of $10 T-shirts that come with a different design every year. The shirt price never goes up in order to ensure they are always affordable and accessible to everyone. Incidentally, this year's design will be unveiled during the Labor Day celebration.“If we made it $20 and sold half as many, then only half as many people could have one,” noted B Foundation Secretary Michael Ostrander. “We want to keep it affordable, because usually it's a whole family buying them.” The organization has been sponsored by many local businesses over the years, including Candlestone Inn and Golf, Robroy Enclosures, B.C. Pizza, Michigan One Community Credit Union and Water Tower Grille, and they have received innumerable private financial donations, both large and small. The B Foundation was officially formed when Linebaugh called a meeting of any and all interested parties in the media center at Belding High School in 2011.Linebaugh, Flynn and Ostrander recalled to the Daily News that about 10 other people besides themselves attended that first meeting, most of whom are still heavily involved with the organization.“The first night that we had the meeting, my dad was actually passing away in my house from cancer,” Linebaugh recalled, using a tissue to soak up the tears collecting in the corners of her eyes. “He was lying in a hospital bed, and I really didn't want to leave him. He was like, 'Just go, just go,' and he actually passed away later that night. So that meeting was really meaningful to me, and then to see how much this has grown and the continuing outpouring of support from this community...”Ostrander described The B Foundation's first meeting as “wild,” while Linebaugh declared, “I had absolutely no idea what I was doing.”“That meeting was great,” Flynn recalled with a broad smile. “People from the businesses and the schools just stood up and said, 'This is what we're seeing.' We never talked about specific goals, it was just about helping, doing good in the community.”“The good part of what we do is that we're helping somebody; the bad part is that somebody has cancer,” Linebaugh said. “The hardest part of this for me is getting to know a family and then losing them. We just lost three people last weekend, and it was rough. I guess we find purpose in pain by helping people who are in need.”In addition to Flynn, Linebaugh and Ostrander, the current B Foundation committee members are Shelly Anderson, Katie Arends, Mitch Arends, Amanda Flynn, Nori Kmiecik, Dayna Neff, Karen O'Neill, Shannon Ostrander, Tricia Reichel, Kristina Richmond, Rachelle Stressman, Heidi Wilker and Cindy Youmans.“We have some new blood in there, but there are also a lot of OG’s,” Ostrander quipped. "And we would like to get some even newer blood in there,” Flynn added.“The committee members are amazing, but this community just continues to give, and the people we give to are very, very thankful and very, very grateful,” Linebaugh noted. The trio said they were honored to be grand marshals of the Labor Day festivities.“From what I understand, we will be present at different activities throughout Labor Day weekend,” Linebaugh said. “There's a rodeo going on, there's a talent show and different things throughout the entire weekend. A couple of us from our committee will be there to represent us, and of course we all get to have fun and ride in the parade. I believe pretty much all of us will be there for that.”For more information, to request their support, to volunteer or to donate, visit thebfoundation.org online, send a message to info@thebfoundation.org, call (616) 302-5055 or find them on social media at facebook.com/BeldingBelieves.
