Dog Barks Collars and Dogs By Meg Caron As a trainer I will often get the question What kind of trainer are you The underlying question here is Do you use punitive training methods to motivate dogs I consider myself a natural trainer That definition essentially allows me to consider all methods of training in order to develop that partnership between owner and dog The dominance theory shows that a dog is always seeking the leader within the group and essentially becoming the leader if one doesn t emerge I believe that is partially true I believe dogs are pack animals but instead of attempting to fit within a particular hierarchy they want to work within a team The relationship goes poorly when the dog doesn t look at you as part of the team but views you as the proverbial water boy It is critical that your dog respects you and works alongside you not against you or for you In order to achieve this there frequently needs to be some positive and negative reinforcement As an owner you must communicate your likes and dislikes finding what motivates your dog and what discourages your dog In my time as a trainer close to 25 years I have probably used every imaginable tool I have used the martingale collar traditional slip chain collar gentle leader prong collar and an electronic collar Some of my owners will initially cringe at my toolbox but find out that I use whatever tool works for the owner dog combination I m not only working with the personality and temperament of the dog but of the owner and how the two work together I have a multitude of examples where one method excelled over another I have examples of how the biggest toughest meanest dogs caved with a snap of my fingers and a poke to get attention and how some of my happiest friendliest dogs needed the highest level of correction to get their attention That is the key to the entire equation How do I get your attention what does it take to get you to turn away from that squirrel and look up at me And once you do here is the other half of the equation how do I get you to continue focusing on me Sometimes it is a treat sometimes it is just praise sometimes it s a squeaky toy Every dog is different and every training program is different Today I met Percy Percy is a labradoodle But Percy has a lot of anxiety Percy is four years old and has developed some nasty behaviors to what he believes is protecting himself He doesn t look to his owners for protection he doesn t trust that they can He believes he is on his own and whenever they attempt to maneuver him he bites But Percy is a sensitive guy If I put a prong collar on Percy or even an e collar I would send him into a pure anxious state of mind and he would become even more aggressive With Percy we have worked alongside a veterinarian Copake Animal Hospital to provide him with some anti anxiety medication He will have about a month before we return to assess the effectiveness Today we focused on teaching Percy the place command and worked with the owners to learn how to read his anxiety We are increasing exercise and establishing routines For Percy it isn t about the collar it s about communication Now there is Rumi Rumi is a nine month old very happy playful Golden Retriever Rumi has young energetic owners They throw the ball all day for Rumi When Rumi gets overly excited she will become naughty She jumps at her owners she grabs their arms legs whatever she can get ahold of Rumi doesn t like to come when called she doesn t want to stop playing Rumi is a pup that is going to benefit from the electronic collar Her worst behaviors come about when she is off her leash and she believes she is free Rumi has very good owners They have engaged in a full training program they are practicing every day and they have purchased a long 30 foot leash to encourage those off lead recalls And only after all this practice has occurred will we introduce the e collar to Rumi I believe that this makes Alpha K9 excel over other trainers in the area I come to you I work in your home and I will customize a program to fit the dog owner combination I tell every potential customer to interview other trainers before picking one But be sure that the trainer you choose is open to all options When we limit ourselves to one method we do just that we limit ourselves I m proud to say that I have everything under the sun sitting in my toolbox I don t belong to any camp I m not an exclusive positive reinforcement trainer and I don t believe that every behavior requires a punitive correction I don t believe in one collar over another I believe in the relationship I believe in creating that emotional bond between the dog and the owner Spending time with owners teaching them how to play with their dog Once that Tails to Tell Chatham Animal Haven BABIES Rescue to Freedom Spotlight Who doesn t love babies Human dog cat pig cow But GOAT babies They make our hearts flutter a little faster than the others Known as kids they are one of the most active and mischievous of all the babies And cute Oh how cute are they Last month we introduced Snowflake and Loki who came to Chatham Animal Haven after being surrendered by their people who were moving to Texas Loki lived at Little Brook Farm a local horse rescue for about a month until he moved to Colleen s house He was neutered on New Year s Eve Happy New Year but NO MORE BABY MAKING His and Snowflake s babies were born late on January 2nd Fortunately we had made the right decision having Snowflake stay at our farrier s house Shout out to Butler s Farrier service if you need a good goat or sheep farrier A good size baby girl came first then a smaller boy who was a breech came second He needed some help being born safely and Jamie made sure he was Breech births can have problems with fluid in the lungs so he was swung to clear them Snowflake was instantly a great first time mom Mid January the three moved to the Haven The babies are growing like weeds and running jumping and getting into everything they can It took almost seven weeks but they finally got names Silas and Harriet Silas will need to be separated from his mama and sister in the next two weeks since goats can breed very young The other option would be to have him wethered neutered It is much better to wait until 5 or 6 months to let his body mature Males that are wethered very young are more likely to have problems with urinary calculi in the future So little Silas will be heading off to join another young male at a friend s house until he can be reunited with his family sometime this Summer Harriet will be staying with mama We are hoping Loki can come over to the Haven and join our Samson another very large and horned goat until the time we can put all of them in together At least that is our goal Stay tuned In other news Cooper and Heidi the two little goats we also wrote about last month who have been staying at Little Brook since the Fall have found a good home and will be going there soon 6 Is It Really Just A Bath Part I By Kendra Baker We ve all been there and if you haven t yet you will be one day We have a dog whom we love very much and we want only the best for We cherish and dote on them and cuddle with them Sometimes we see or smell something amiss A They got into SOMETHING B They picked up some nasty hitchhikers fleas ticks C They sport the Dog Funk odor and are turning our fingers grey The list goes on Now we all know a bath is coming but what do we use Can t we ask a friend or look it up on the internet Perhaps we can just figure it out ourselves as we go Maybe we have a bottle of doggy shampoo from the supermarket on standby Simple right First let s consider what we are working with and go from there When we wash our pets we are removing the excess oils dirt old skin cells and dead hair as well as potential allergens irritants and environmental pollutants from the surface of the skin How we go about this and the products we use can have an enormous effect on our pets health Here s how The skin is the largest organ of the body and serves as the barrier As all living things have needs for survival so does the skin These needs are Nutrition Hydration Protection and Oxygen and all but the last are fulfilled by something that is produced in the hair follicle called sebum basically oil Yes oil is actually our friend This oil sebum not only feeds waters and protects the skin it also keeps the fur healthy shiny and easy to brush What do I mean when I say it protects It keeps bacteria fungus yeast parasites and harmful UV rays at bay Obviously this is some pretty important stuff Now what do we use to bath our dog Suggestions abound from the internet to friends and family and old conventions Very commonly suggested product types are baby shampoos because they sound gentle and smell nice and dish detergents because they clean very well and will knock down fleas Here s the reality about human products they are formulated for an animal that has a completely different type of skin and hair than dogs Our dog s have a pH of approximately 6 5 while human s average around 4 9 5 5 What that basically means is our skin and the products we use on ourselves are more acidic than the skin of our dog s and the products we should use on them Using these human products will disrupt the delicate balance of the skin barrier Also our dog s are not all built the same different breeds vary greatly in the type of coat they have The products you use must meet the needs of coat type you are bathing There are different kinds of moisturizers that do different jobs and human products are not balanced for canine use Our conditioners are often ill suited and insufficient to restore our dog s skin barrier Dish detergents more extreme as they are designed to completely cut through all the grease and oil of whatever you wash with them Meaning our dogs are left with dry itchy and compromised skin Now we all have a presence of bacteria and fungi in low levels on our skin They balance each other out and the
population stays low because they are in competition with each other for resources to survive Once the skin is stripped of its protective layer those populations suddenly have a lot more resources and they grow Remember that the oil made by the skin protects the skin from these guys Our dogs scratch because their skin is dry this weakens the skin more and the bacteria and fungus can move deeper A dog with skin like this stinks much more quickly too These detergents may kill fleas by removing their oil layer and suffocating them in the detergent We can tolerate these products to some extent but let s be honest we can get dry cracked hands from using dish soap We must remember our dog s skin is 6 8 times thinner and more sensitive than ours because they have that fur to protect them so imagine how dry cracked and irritated these soaps leave your dog s skin Please don t use these products on dogs Clearly there is more to the story than wash and done So how do we safely bathe our dog and keep their skin healthy We use a high quality mild dog specific shampoo followed by the appropriate conditioner made by a company that understands the unique needs of our dog s skin The ingredients will be effective and will not strip the oil we want to keep Avoid cheap supermarket shampoos the marketing can look so appealing but has the product inside had the same treatment as the label design It is easy to make something that looks good is produced cheaply and sells for a high profit There are a lot of these out there Usually what is inside are harsh products and will result in a dry itchy dog whose signature Dog Funk smell quickly comes back often leading to a trip to the veterinarian which they commonly diagnosed as allergies and an expensive fix that doesn t address the cause You will also see an increase in shedding because dry skin can t hold healthy hair IMPORTANT Don t skip the conditioner That s right dog conditioner is essential to replace what the shampoo use this anonymous submission this week to help all our readers see the ongoing importance and impact that the programs and services at the Columbia Greene Humane Society have on our community A few weeks ago I looked over to see an orange cat looking in my neighbor s glass door Being familiar with all the animals that my neighbors have I knew that none of them owned cats they let outside So the question became how did Rusty as we began calling him come to be here Did he somehow become lost from his owner Was he abandoned because his owner could no longer care for him due to financial constraints Or was he simply not wanted anymore We featured him on local social media and called the Columbia Greene Humane Society SPCA to report him as a found cat and to inquire whether anyone had reported any lost cats that fit Rusty s description unfortunately with no matches We borrowed a Have a Heart trap to assist us with catching him and made arrangements to surrender him to the shelter once we were successful in securing him We set about making sure he was as safe as we could make him until we could rescue him He was utilizing the neighbors open wood house as his shelter We knew that wasn t adequate shelter for him against the frigid February temperatures we were experiencing so a heated insulated box was constructed for him We fed him multiple times throughout the day and made sure he had access to fresh water from a heated water bowl Although Rusty wouldn t let us touch him we were convinced he was a cat that had once been owned because of his behavior of coming when called meowing back to us when we talked to him seeking out contact with my dog and his overall sweet demeanor Our efforts to capture him accelerated when we noticed that he was limping and I m happy to say we were successful in trapping him the next day I notified the shelter we had secured him and they made arrangements for us to bring him in When the shelter staff handled him they found a badly infected wound The shelter quickly made arrangements for his veterinary care which resulted in a surgery to repair and place drains from the abscessed wound He then returned to the shelter to begin his recovery Had Rusty not received the care he did it is almost certain he would have succumbed to a painful death as a result of sepsis We ll never know how Rusty arrived at my neighbor s door but what we do know is that if he was no longer wanted by his owner options are available If his owners couldn t afford his care but wanted to keep him the Columbia Greene Humane Society offers a free Tails to Tell My Best Friend Forever by Iris Bass I grew up in a rural Vermont village population 800 in the 1950s The village school was four rooms for eight grades and when you graduated from first grade to second grade you simply moved from one side of the room to the other Every other year you d move to the lower grade side of another room Many of the kids at the village grade school were farmers kids and lots of classroom seats would be empty during harvest time because the kids were needed at home I wasn t a farmer s kid we were village dwellers My dad was a Dartmouth and Tuck School of Business grad who married a Vermonter and then settled into becoming a Vermonter when he became the business manager of the local copper mine The anomaly of a copper mine in Vermont drew together a diverse group of transient but close knit adult village dwellers from across the country and from around the world but kids my own age were very few and very far between Warm weather playdates consisted of going with my mom to one of the outlying farms to pick up supplies of fresh milk eggs vegetables and fruits While my mom shared coffee and gossip in the kitchen I d roam the farm with the farm kids I knew from school and visit all the farm animals while pulling fresh warm eggs from beneath the chickens and searching for kittens in the haymow By contrast the winter months were long and cold but none of that mattered on those crisp bright winter mornings when Mr Bushway would bring his daughter Carol down from their farm in a horsedrawn farm sleigh and pick me up for a ride to school Those idyllic early years hold many fond memories but the memories that are the most vivid and that I cherish the most are those of Fluffy a big gray and white tom cat who quite magically appeared at our house one day and who quickly became my constant companion and indeed my very first best friend But even more than that Fluffy became and remains perhaps the single most enduring and endearing influence on my life When the weather was warm and dry Fluffy and I would spend the day wandering the fields woods and river banks He taught me to be silent observant and peaceful Fluffy was my Zen master When the weather was cold or wet we d snuggle safe inside and I d read aloud to him He encouraged me to be articulate learned and self confident Fluffy was my patient tutor And if I was ever sad mad or scared I d take Fluffy under the bed with me to allay my tears anger and fear Fluffy was my solace And now as I reflect back over my seventy years I realize what a truly lucky child I was to have had Fluffy in my life to have had Fluffy to love and I loved Fluffy with all my heart I hope all that Rainbow Bridge stuff is true I d love to be with Fluffy again someday This Side of Purradise Who Is That Masked Cat No it s not the Lone Ranger meet Casper who peeks out winningly from what in fancy dress terms is called a domino mask permanently affixed to the upper half of his face Aged 15 75 in human years but remember cats can live well into their 20s this handsome black tuxedoed gentleman did I say fancy dress is one of some half dozen kitties a few of whom are his younger brothers surrendered recently to Berkshire Humane Society from a single residence Perhaps due to having spent his years in competition for it Casper relishes human attention When we spoke on February 23 BHS staffer Jane noted that he loves to snuggle doesn t mind being picked up enjoys chatting and will probably follow you around just to be nearby She believes he likely would accept another cat or dog who is as laidback as he is indeed personality wise she said he is actually kind of like a dog Rest assured you need not adopt the whole kit and caboodle he arrived with Casper isn t closely bonded them Jane said instead he delights in finally having some space for himself that s understandable imagine sharing the same home with six siblings or their friends for your entire life Like many human elders Casper is beginning to feel his age in his joints and muscles and there s a simple inexpensive solution for that which BHS is currently administering to him glucosamine perhaps BIRD BATHMigration By Michael Corral Elizabeth Tullett DVM When to Leave and Where to Go Everyone waits for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency to release the forecast for the upcoming hurricane season How many will there be How strong Will they hit land These are all part of their prediction They take data from El Nino the North Atlantic Oscillation wind flow off of Africa and Atlantic water temperature and a super computer crunches the numbers and out comes the predictions Every year they get a little more accurate but there seems to be a simpler way to judge the severity of the upcoming hurricane season ask a Veery A Veery is a thrush that spend its spring and summer in the woods of eastern North America Although we think of them as our birds they spend most of their life in Brazil and their arrival here is marked by their beautiful song Like all thrushes they breed in woodlands and all fill the forest with ethereal sounds the Veery s spiral flute like song sounds like it is echoing through a drain pipe The song is the start of the breeding season in a short time they mate and build a nest and hatch out a brood that will soon leave the nest Some seasons the Veeries will breed again double brood but other seasons they breed only once and will turn and head for South America Christopher Heckscher has studied Veeries for 20 years in the Delaware woods and he has tried to figure out why they leave early or late Is it the food supply predators amount of rain high or low temperatures He has looked at all these factors and there was no correlation then he looked at the last 20 year of hurricanes in the Atlantic On years with severe hurricane seasons they leave early and when there are few hurricanes they double brood and leave late They are able to anticipate the difficulty of their journey back to South America Heckscher surmises that if they leave early they can wait along the Gulf of Mexico during seasons with frequent hurricanes waiting for a window of calm to make the long flight over the gulf It is amazing and mysterious how they know Much of the study of bird migration focuses on the late summer and early fall Birds fatten up for the long flight and many become nocturnally restless Captured Indigo Buntings are active during the day and sleep at night except in late summer when they are up all night and if in nature would be flying south using the north star as a compass Hawks swallows swifts and hummingbirds will fly during the day and feed as they go but most small tropical migrants fly at night and will land in the morning to rest and feed Kept in captivity with no cues as to day length or outside temperature these birds will also become nocturnally restless indicating they have a yearly clock that tells the when to go But where to go That is another mysterious story In the last article we learned that birds have a daily clock that they use with the sun to fly in the desired direction they also have a magnetic compass and now a star compass but unless you know where to go these tools won t get you there They must have a map sense Long thought to be a magnetic research is starting to reveal that they can see the earth magnetic field Proteins in the retina of their eyes become more active when pointed in a particular direction Maybe like a bright line would appear at a certain angle One hypothesis is that when birds are born in the nest these proteins form to indicate the nest s magnetic location When the birds return next spring they need to fly until their position matches that spot Experiments with spring migrants that were captured in route and displaced hundreds of miles east or west then released made the adjustment and found their breeding area apparently following this magnetic view of the world How they find their wintering grounds well that is another mystery waiting to be solved 289 Dalton Avenue Pittsfield MA 01201 Phone 413 443 4949 Fax 413 443 8500 Certified in Veterinary Acupuncture www allenheights com BREEZY NOOK PET CREMATORIUM LTD Established in 1997 Where your feelings are understood and your presence is always welcome 452 Presbyterian Hill Road Stephentown New York 12168 Georgi Beebe 518 733 9896 Michael Corral Master s Thesis was on Red winged Blackbird song He has contriuted to a number of scientific journals written a text on Ornithology and wrote many articles for Animal Life Publication He taught in the Berkshires since 1980 and retired in 2011 He now teaches in Cambodia 13
CUB S DEN FIRE GOBY Text and Photo by Thom Smith Not exactly a fish for the amateur but one you will easily admire and want for your saltwater aquarium While various fishes have different names this one has a good variety of common names that include fire goby fire dartfish firefish goby red fire goby and magnificent firefish It belongs to the dartfish family and that should be warning enough for anyone keeping one or a mated pair that as a species it darts and may dart right out of the tank and onto the floor not exactly a habitable environment So keep its tank tightly covered This species is caught for the hobby in its native to reefs in Indian and Pacific Oceans In the home aquarium is hardy and relatively easy to keep and best of all it is not aggressive When I say not exactly for the amateur I mean it is important to be accustomed to caring for fresh water fishes first before taking in any marine salt water fish This small fish rarely growing larger than three inches and lives for roughly three years It prefers a sandy bottom and if the sand is deep enough a minimum of 5 inches is best and if it is the right kind it may burrow into it Something I could never accomplish so I cut a section of inch PVC pipe the depth of the sand to make it a safe home More than one is even better In addition to sand they must have other hiding places so a corner of the tank is best outfitted with chunks of reef rock and live rock 7278 degrees F is ideal and preferred by the live rock so called because of the organisms growing on and in it Just remember that this goby likes to hide and needs non aggressive tank mates if itis to get along well Food is not a problem but variety is the best idea like every other fish Offer Mysis shrimp alive or frozen thawed before feeding brine shrimp alive or freeze dried and if available live black worms It is best to feed a couple of times a day rather than a big feeding once a day They have very tiny stomachs Your shop may suggest foods other they feed theirs If you intend to set up a small tank for just a few easy to keep small non aggressive fishes with your goby the minimum size must be no smaller than 20 gallons and larger is always better Once you get to know your goby and it gets to know you you will begin to see just how smart a small fish like this is and with hope it will learn how smart you are Thom Smith now retired was to the length of 12 inches Most species are usually less than 4 inches long Goby can be transparent or brightly colored covered with various blotches and bands Goby has elongated body that ends with rounded tail Eyes can be large or nearly invisible in some species Goby is a carnivore meat eater It eats insects larva eggs mussels and plankton Neon goby collects and eats parasites from the body of large fish Most gobies are bottom dwellers that use disc shaped sucker fused pelvic fins to attach themselves to the rocks on the ocean floor or to move across the vertical surfaces Some gobies live in the burrows inside the mud or sand Natural enemies of gobies are large species of fish and birds Mating season depends on the geographic location It usually takes place during the warm season Male occupies territory and mates with couple of females Certain percent of males is small sized without typical male features These males are known as sneakers because they sneak near the spawning areas to release the sperm Females always choose to mate with large strong males and this is the only way they can fertilize at least some of the eggs Eggs are usually attached to the rocks shells or corals Male guards the eggs keeps them well oxygenated by mixing the water with its tail and clean he removes detritus from the surface of eggs Transparent larvae emerge from the eggs couple of days later Larvae of freshwater species often travel toward the brackish and marine waters via river currents They usually return back to their native habitats couple of weeks months later Gobies are able to change the gender and transform from females into males and vice versa This transformation happens in only couple of days when dominant male in the group dies or when weak males cannot find
