I recently binge watched a show I discovered on the new Magnolia Network It s how far this place has come in recent years and just how magically talented Mey called re motel and each episode features a passionate motel owner that has Co the interior design firm hired to transform Skyline really are Gone is the restored a historic property Picture a rundown motor lodge along a dusty rose carpet oak side tables and ruffled bed skirts Designers somehow looked highway getting a massive makeover and becoming a trendy modern past the tube TVs mounted on the wall baskets of faux greenery and the destination filled with succulents ratan swinging chairs and reclaimed wood bumpy floral bedspreads to imagine something great The going to grandma s Well it turns out we have a similar one of these fixer uppers in our neck of the house vibe has been completely replaced by design forward d cor woods It s called Skyline Lodge There are no interior corridors with this vintage design Rooms all walk out to The property s roots stretch back to the 1930s when architect Arthur J Kelsey the courtyard and it s just a few steps to the restaurant that draws many people put pen to paper to create this getaway in North Carolina s Blue Ridge here including locals I wasn t familiar with Oak Steakhouse but apparently Mountains You may not be familiar with Kelsey but chances are you recognize many people are With locations in Alexandria Charlotte Nashville Raleigh his mentor s name Frank Lloyd Wright Wright s influence can be seen in Avalon and Charleston its reputation speaks for itself That s why the general touches like native stone hand cut cedar shakes and the adaptation of the manager says it s not uncommon to see the place natural surroundings into the design packed on a Wednesday night Unfortunately the original owner Howard Randall passed away in 1938 just a For starters we tried the Oysters Rockefeller few years after the lodge s opening It shut down until a new owner rescued it a classic and Smoked Trout Rillettes served with from despair reopening Skyline to guests in the mid 1960s Over the last nine beet chips As our waiter talked through the menu decades the property has undergone several renovations with the latest at the he got to the bread service which he said is one hands of Indigo Road Hospitality Group It s the company s first hotel venture of the most underrated items on the menu But but they ve tasted success with restaurants throughout the south including because of some silly desire I have to eat fewer Indaco and O Ku Sushi which both have locations in Charlotte and Charleston carbs I didn t take his advice He brought out four freshly baked rolls anyway saying I just The property is only 47 miles from my Greenville doorstep Because much of really thought you should try them And I the journey winds through the mountains and the Nantahala National Forest must admit he was right The orange zest the drive took nearly two hours Toward the end of the trip you ll pass through and ginger butter spread generously on the charming town of Cashiers Stop for a latte at Buck s Coffee Caf or a these fluffy fresh rolls should not be macaron at Sugar Cloud Baking Company both located on Highway 64 near overlooked My mouth is watering right the turn for Highlands From there it s only about 20 minutes to Skyline now just thinking about them Unlike many bygone budget motor lodges eager to draw business from passing We moved on to the main course opting travelers Skyline was always meant to be a luxury escape tucked off the beaten for steak Judging by the bustling crowd path The access road crosses over a small lake and snakes along Big Creek until and the fact you reach the parking lot The hunter green exterior blends well with the thick that this was a steakhouse I figured I would canopy of trees The check in process happens in a small windowed room near not regret that decision I did not Every bite the carport Here you can also grab coffee a souvenir tee or a snack was perfection In classic steakhouse fashion diners choose between a list of butters and While renovations are underway on additional sauces to accompany their dish I enjoyed the rooms most of the completed spaces face a horseradish cream although to be honest the fun courtyard with a retro vibe Once a space steak was so good it really didn t need a sauce occupied by a typical hotel pool now modern outdoor furniture fire pits and cornhole boards Two hours later this was indeed a dining experience not to be rushed we cover perpetually perfect artificial turf I feel moved on to dessert And this is where my only regret of the evening lies We like I m at the Brady Bunch house I heard a ordered the most beautiful Blueberry Marbled Cheesecake topped with white man joke as he walked with his party to the chocolate thyme crumble lemon thyme meringues and blueberry lemon coulis rear of the courtyard toward the entrance of which my husband and I split Do yourself a favor and order your own dessert the Oak Steakhouse He s not wrong There is a Judging by every bite I consumed that evening I can safely say you will not feeling of stepping back in time at the Skyline regret that decision Lodge but not in a bad way Feeling stuffed and spoiled we walked a few steps to our room to get some Open the goldenrod yellow door to the room and you ll find modern conveniences rest The next morning the hotel delivered a basket of fresh fruit yogurt and like Netflix heated bathroom floors and the most beautiful matte black electric coffee to our door Then we packed up and headed back the way we came kettle I Google to discover it s a Fellow Stagg Pour Over which I am absolutely As I cruised down Highway 130 I noticed something meandering through the adding to my Christmas list Some wood paneling remains but instead of tall grass in the shoulder I slammed on the breaks and watched a black bear frumpy it feels fresh when paired with modern furniture crisp white paint and make his way across the road something I ve never seen in all my years visiting a wall of windows at the back that open to our own private balcony I did a little digging and found an outdated hotel listing for the old Skyline Lodge on Orbitz a travel booking website A 49 photo slideshow revealed just these mountains It was an exhilarating moment and another reason why this weekend getaway is one to remember BY ALISON STORM 19

BELLE S MOVIE REVIEW The SuicidE Squad MY RATING 8 5 10 AFTER CREDIT SCENES 1 By Molly Dungan Rarely is there a movie that is so bad that a studio says Okay The humor is outstanding from start to finish I was laughing that s it we need a redo But with Suicide Squad 2016 that s hysterically the entire film I was expecting so little and was so exactly what happened Now it s 2021 and The Suicide Squad is pleased by everything this film had to offer It was fun hilarious back with some big changes The overall premise is no different grisly and even very trippy It had everything from romance to but this time the movie is rated R directed and written by mommy issues to the cutest shark and rat you ve ever seen Not to Guardians of the Galaxy s James Gunn and is free of that treacherous mention this film has an all star cast consisting of Margot Robbie Jared Leto Joker performance To say this is an upgrade would be Viola Davis Sylvester Stallone Michael Rooker John Cena Idris an understatement Elba James Gunn Pete Davidson and more Like this is DC If you re not familiar with Suicide Squad the basic premise is that a band of hardened criminals are utilized by the government as This movie is absolutely the best entertainment you ll find in a means to fight a bigger bad Typically the missions are suicide theaters right now Go see it missions hence the morbid team name of The Suicide Squad This time the mission isn t quite clear until the end but the journey to get there is just phenomenal 22 done right

Morgan Mattson grew up in a small town in rural Pennsylvania called Red Lion Her family still lives there and she visits often She and her husband Jesse moved down to Greenville in the summer of 2015 They both liked the idea of being somewhere warmer with a large arts community Soon after they moved out to Simpsonville where they rescued their cute cat Juniper and retired greyhound Pharaoh Morgan s husband Jesse is an engineer and Morgan began a career as a digital media arts teacher at Greenville High School A few years into teaching digital media she quickly realized she needed to get back into clay Her principal was very supportive and helped her build a ceramics program from the ground up Now ceramics is a class that every student wants to take Morgan s ceramics 1 2 and 3 classes are packed full of young artists who are just as in love with clay as she is Tell Belle about what inspires you as a ceramics artist I am often inspired by nature and patterns in my art My original love for painting shines through on the surface of my pots I don t like just slapping some glaze on my pots at the end but instead I carefully draw paint print and carve on the outside of each piece This creates a unique look to each pot and makes my work stand out from other ceramic artists Tell Belle about what led you into working with ceramics Are you self taught or did you learn from someone else 40 My parents supported my love for the arts by signing me up for many art camps as a young kid I took art classes in school of course too In high school I had my first encounter with clay and really took a liking to it Once I started to plan for college I decided that my major should be Art Education After applying to Penn State I was accepted and went off to learn new things While I was signing up for classes I chose to take a ceramics course among all of the other art classes that I needed to take I immediately fell in love with the atmosphere messiness and the idea that you can make anything out of dirt From that point forward I decided to have a focus in ceramics What is your favorite part of what you do I love giving people the option to have a piece of art in their lives that they will interact with on a daily basis Clay is such a magical art form to work with I get to see student s faces light up when they build with clay or when their final project emerges from the kiln Customers tell me often that they love the art that they have received and use it daily This is what makes being a potter and a teacher so inspiring In your opinion how would you define the style of your work and how did it develop 6th 7th I will also be at the Browse and Stroll Market in Travelers Rest on Saturday November 20th and Saturday December 11th If you are looking for custom orders please email me at morganmattsonart gmail com Tell Belle about what s in store for your future I would define my work as fun and functional Each piece of art that I make has a purpose This way people are drawn to something that they can use to make their lives more enjoyable I love using color and surface design to make each piece different I often try new techniques to enhance the surface of my pieces As I try more ways to create these surface designs my fun style emerges Most of my work revolves around natural elements and patterns with generally cool color palettes As I practice and expand my skill level my style changes and grows with it I have some upcoming shows this Fall that I am making work for Also I am hoping to get into painting more murals I have one in downtown Simpsonville already More details about that will be posted on my Instagram if you want to keep up to date What is on your mind when you are shaping an object Do you have a website or social media where our readers can stay informed about all of your new work Usually I think about how I would like to see the piece be used So if I am making a mug I think about the silhouette of the vessel It needs to be large enough for a coffee lover to fit enough coffee or a tea lover to fit enough tea The edge where the mug user s mouth will meet the clay needs to be smooth The handle needs to be comfortable to hold and easy to grasp All of these topics flow through my mind as I mold the mug into existence Where can our Belles find and purchase your artwork locally You can find me at morganmattsonceramics com I am also on Etsy if you search M Mattson Ceramics You can buy from me in person at Artisanville at the Greenville Convention Center on November I hope to do more custom work in the future I love working with people to create whatever they are in need of or want Some custom orders that I have made in the past are dinner plates bowls cups mugs candle votive holders and treat jars You can find me at morganmattsonceramics com I am also posting on Instagram constantly so that is the best way to stay up to date with everything that I am doing My Instagram handle is morganmattsonceramics To go
