13BEHINDThe BusineASHLEY KIRBY | ASHLEY KIRBY PHOTOGRAPHYGet ready to dive into the heartwarming story behind one of the Upstate’s favorite family photographers—Ashley Kirby! With a passion for capturing life’s most pre-cious moments, Ashley’s journey began in child-hood, inspired by her grandmother’s treasured photo albums. Now a seasoned photographer with a style that’s both natural and warm, she’s all about making memories last forever. Curious to hear more about her go-to locations, photography secrets, and how she balances family life with her flourishing business? Keep reading— you won’t want to miss a single detail!Ashley, how did your passion for photography begin? My interest in photography was ignited in childhood, courtesy of my grandmother’sphoto albums stored in an old wooden treasure box. Each album contains a rich tapestry of her childhood, marriage, motherhood and even life as a grandmother. I fell in love with the black and white photos.Present day, my grandmother faces dementia, making this wooden box and all of its contents a true treasure chestto me. It allows me to retell her the stories she used to tell me about her life.I now follow in her footsteps, documenting my life journey and that of my three children through photography. After Receiving a 24mm Barbie camera from Santa at 4 years old, I was set on a lifelong path of capturing memories! What’s your favorite type of photography session—family portraits, weddings, or maybe something more unexpected? As a photographer, I take great pleasure in capturing a wide range of moments, from Sunday church services to newborn, graduation, and wedding sessions. Nevertheless, family sessions remain my absolute favorite, as I cherish the opportunity to freeze the beauty of parents interacting with their children on a stunning fall evening, or couples exchanging tender moments amidst their kids’ joyful laughter and play outside as the temperature cools o at sunset on a summer night. I am deeply aware of the swift passage of time and the significance of still framed images. This is why I enjoy providing families with a precious gallery of photos to treasure. Images have the power to momentarily transport us back in time, revitalizing memories that may otherwise fade with the passage of time.Your photos have such a unique style! What do you call it?My photography style is characterized as natural with warm tones. To achieve this aesthetic, I typically schedule my sessions just before sunset, allowing the setting sun to cast a warm glow on the background of my photos. How do you approach a shoot to capture those perfect moments? Before each session, I say a prayer for the family I’m working with and for the session to be perfect for that family. I am grateful for the numerous beautiful families I have had the privilege to photograph over the past 12 years. I give all the glory to the Lord for every successful session. I pray that He continues to bless my career, and enables me to keep capturing beautiful memories for families in Spartanburg. What’s your go-to location for outdoor shoots around the Upstate, and why do you love shooting there?Spartanburg possesses numerous charming locations, including Hatcher Garden, which is my personal favorite go to. However, the true essence of family photography lies not in the backdrop, but in the people being photographed. A family’s own backyard can serve as an equally eective setting for capturing special moments as long as it is a place where they feel comfortable and at ease. This rings very true for families with little children.Outside of photography, what are some of your hobbies or favorite ways to relax and recharge?Photography aside, I delight in spending time with my loving husband and our three wonderful children, engaging in outdoor activities that allow us to appreciate nature. Our adventures include hiking, biking, occasionally running, and playing at local parks, coupled with an excessive coee consumption on my part. For clients looking to book a session with you, what’s the best way to reach out, and what’s your availability like?I can be reached by phone or text anytime at 864.804.7911 as well as my Facebook page, Ashley Kirby Photography & Instagram @ashleykirbyphotography.Lastly, what advice would you give to someone wanting to get into photography or looking to improve their skills? My advice to a new photographer or someone looking to improve their skills is to take pictures as frequently as possible and embrace the learning process. It is not necessary for every photo to be perfect, and your current camera equipment is sucient to produce high-quality images. Focus on developing your own style and attracting clients over time. Don’t give up!
14third spacecoffee & bakeryB E L L E ’ S B I T E SNestled in the heart of charming Landrum, Third Space has quickly become a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike. Oering more than just great coee and baked goods, this cozy cafe embodies the idea of a “third space” — a welcoming retreat between home and work. With a commitment to using local and organic ingredients, a friendly atmo-sphere, and a passion for creating a commu-nity hub, Third Space is more than just a place to grab a cup of coee. In this interview, we chat with the owner, Bailey Morris, to learn about the inspiration behind the cafe, its unique oerings, and the deep connection it has with the town.Third Space has become such a cozy spot for coee lovers! Can you tell us a little about how it all started and what inspired the name?I have a passion for baking and had already spent a few years working in local coee shops when the opportunity arose to combine these two loves into a business. The name Third Space stemmed from this idea of the spaces we exist in our lives. Our first space is our home, our second space is work or school, and our third space being the other spaces we go outside of those. These spaces are often churches, social clubs, bars, and coee shops. I wanted my space to be this “third space” for the community, so the name just fit!We know you’re all about specialty coee—what makes your brews stand out, and do you have any customer favorites? All of our coee is organic and ethically sourced, roasted by Prophet Coee Roasters located out of North Charleston, and we really think they are the best. Many shops use low quality coee beans and try to cover the taste with artificially flavored syrups, but not us. Not only is our coee fantastic on its own, but for those that prefer a flavored drink we make all of our syrups in house, including our seasonal flavors. Our brown sugar latte is a customer favorite year round, but our seasonal drinks have made their place on many people’s favorite coee list!Your homemade baked goods are to die for! What are some must-try treats for first-time visitors? We bake everything in-house each day with local and organic ingredients. Our focaccia bread is our best seller, with many flavors on rotation such as everything bagel, sundried tomato, caramelized onion, and pepperoni pizza- which is a must try for savory lovers. Our cinnamon rolls are a step up from the classic morning pastry- with the addition of brown butter and maple cream cheese icing, we understand why they are so popular. We also have a great variety of cookies, scones, muns, and other seasonal pastries, including lots of gluten free options! The atmosphere at Third Space feels so welcoming. What vibe do you want people to experience when they walk through the door? Our motto is a place to connect, create, and just be, which perfectly describes our atmosphere. We want to encourage those who walk in to put away the phone and distractions of life and to connect with others, be creative, and to just be themselves while they’re hanging out. We have such a cozy spot inside with free Wi-fi for students and remote workers, but also a great outdoor space for larger groups to enjoy the beautiful fall weather.Landrum is such a charming town. What made you choose this location, and what do you love most about the local community?Landrum is the hidden gem of the upstate, and we are so thankful to be one part of this small, tight knit community! My family grew up in Landrum so I was always in the area. We continued to see a need for a gathering space for the growing town, and when new construction started on a shopping strip on East Rutherford, I was approached by the owners with the pos-sibility of expanding my online baking busi-ness to a brick-and-mortar store. After lots of prayers and number crunching, I took the risk, signed a contract, and buildout began on Third Space. Although we’ve been open less than 6 months, we have already become a staple in this community. With a small town you have an opportunity to know everyone, so we have made amazing connections to other locals and small businesses. You never know when someone is having a bad day or going through a dicult season in life, so we always want to be the shining light in eveyone’s day!Do you have any fun seasonal drinks or pastries planned for fall? We’re all about pumpkin spice over here! We are SO excited for our take on the classic pumpkin spice latte, but also have other unique drinks using fall produce. As if our cinnamon rolls couldn’t get any better, we have an out of this world pumpkin cinnamon roll on the menu this fall, along with pumpkin bread, apple scones, chai spice cookies, and gluten free pumpkin muns! We do gluten free and vegan pop tarts every Thursday and love adding fall flavors to the classic treat! How can our readers find you online and stay up-to-date on new menu items, events, and specials? Do you have a website, social media accounts, or other ways to connect?Readers can find us under ThirdSpaceLandrum on Instagram and Facebook where we post our daily selection along with any specials or event information. If someone wants to stop by, what are your hours, and where exactly are you located in Landrum? We are open Tuesday through Friday, 6:30am-4pm, and Saturday from 7am-3pm at East Rutherford Street, Unit D Landrum, SC.What’s one thing you wish more people knew about Third Space?Third Space was fully funded and is owned by a 22-year-old with the entrepreneur spirit and a desire for bringing people together over delicious coee and homemade treats. Although we are a small team, we don’t cut any corners or outsource any of our baking. We are up at 3am baking everything in our pastry case each morning, and work until after close preparing to do the same thing the next day. Third Space is truly a family aair, with my mother coming under my wing to become an excellent baker and assisting in all our day-to-day tasks. If you hang around on our busy Saturdays, you might catch my dad doing the dishes and keeping the place clean while we are working with customers. Our team is small, but every person involved pours so much of their heart into this space. I feel so blessed to have such a powerful support system, both inside the shop and out!PHOTOS BY HUTCH HAVEN PHOTOGRAPHY & JACKIE XIONG PHOTOGRAPHY

20Fall Skincare SwapsAs the leaves turn golden and pumpkin spice everything takes over, it’s time to cozy up your skincare routine too! Fall brings chilly breezes and drier air, which means your skin needs extra love and hydration. Don’t worry, though—we’ve got you covered with fun, simple swaps that will keep your skin glowing and happy all autumn long!Swap Your Lightweight Moisturizer for a Cozy, Rich FormulaYour skin deserves to snuggle up in something a little more luxurious as the weather cools. Say goodbye to lightweight summer gels and hello to richer creams! Try CeraVe Moisturizing Cream or First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream—both are like a warm hug for your skin, full of hydrating goodness to lock in moisture.Trade Foaming Cleansers for a Creamy TreatThose bubbly, foaming cleansers might feel refreshing in the summer, but in the fall, they can leave your skin feeling tight. Go for something more hydrating, like Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser or Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser—both will cleanse without stripping away your natural oils.Add a Hydrating Serum for an Extra BoostFall calls for a glow-up! Layer on a hydrating serum before your moisturizer to keep your skin plump and dewy. We’re loving The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 or Glow Rec-ipe Plum Plump Hyaluronic Serum—both pack a punch of moisture to keep your skin hydrated and bouncy.Don’t Say Bye-Bye to SPFJust because it’s sweater weather doesn’t mean the sun can’t sneak in some damage. Keep up your daily SPF routine! Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen and La Roche-Posay Anthelios Melt-in Milk are lightweight and perfect for everyday wear, even on those cloudy, crisp days.Exfoliate with a Gentle TouchExfoliation is key to glowing skin, but go easy as the air gets drier. Switch to a gentle exfoliant, like Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant or Tatcha The Rice Polish. Use it once or twice a week to keep your skin smooth without stripping away that much-needed moisture.Upgrade Your Lip CareDry, cracked lips? No, thanks! Keep your pout soft and smooth with a hydrating lip balm like Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask (hello, vanilla dream) or Burt’s Bees Lip Balm in pumpkin spice—because why not get festive?Bring in the Big Guns: Facial OilsIf your skin is feeling extra dry, adding a facial oil is like slipping on a cozy sweater. A few drops of Biossance Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil or Herbivore Lapis Facial Oil will lock in moisture and leave you glowing like a fall sunset.Go for a Richer Eye CreamThe cooler weather can make the delicate skin around your eyes look a little tired and dry. Up-grade to a thicker eye cream like Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado or Drunk Elephant C-Tango Multivitamin Eye Cream to keep that area smooth and hydrated. With these fun, easy fall swaps, your skin will stay fresh and fabulous all season long! Just like bundling up in your favorite fall sweaters, these products will help protect your skin from the elements, leaving you with a cozy glow that’s perfect for the pumpkin patch.TRANSITIONING YOUR ROUTINE FOR COOLER WEATHER

22The Junior League of Spartanburg, Inc. (JLS) has been a cornerstone of positive change in our community for 75 years. One of the most anticipated events the Junior League hosts is their annual Santa’s Shoppe. The three-day holiday market brings together local artisans, merchants, and shoppers for a festive experience that gives back to the community. Santa’s Shoppe also includes something for the little ones: the ever-popular Cookies with Santa, where children join Santa for an hour of pictures, crafts, and cookie decorating. Santa’s Shoppe will take place from November 15-17, 2024, at the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium, and promises to be the perfect way to kick off the holiday season. With more than 50 vendors offering everything from arts and crafts to gourmet foods and fashionable clothing, Santa’s Shoppe allows you to support local businesses while completing your holiday shopping. But this event is about more than finding the perfect gift—it’s about giving back. Proceeds from Santa’s Shoppe support the JLS mission, including their signature community initiative, the Mini-Grants for Teachers program. Mini-Grants for Teachers: Supporting Education, One Classroom at a TimeEach year, funds raised through Santa’s Shoppe help the League provide mini-grants to local teachers, supporting innovative classroom projects that might not otherwise receive funding. These grants empower educators to enhance their students’ learning experiences through creative and impactful initiatives. Whether purchasing new materials for a hands-on science project or funding new technology for the classroom, the Mini-Grants program ensures that Spartanburg’s students benefit from enriched educational opportunities. Last year, the Junior League of Spartanburg awarded more than $20,000 to 39 teachers to fund projects and programs within their classrooms and schools.A Commitment to Community ImpactThe Junior League of Spartanburg’s mission is rooted in volunteerism and leadership. Through events like Santa’s Shoppe, JLS works to make a lasting impact on the community by developing leaders and supporting causes that matter. The League has a steep history of improving women’s and children’s health and wellness, promoting literacy and school readiness, and ensuring educators have the resources to help students succeed. Their collaborative efforts have strengthened the Spartanburg community year after year. JLS members have contributed an incredible 1.8 million volunteer hours and nearly $2 million in community support since the organization’s inception. Their work is a testament to the power of women coming together to lead and serve. As the holiday season approaches, mark your calendars for Santa’s Shoppe. 2828In a community like Spartanburg, where the well- being of children is a shared priority, the Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) stands as a vital resource for healing and support. Since 1995, the CAC has been a beacon of hope for children affected by abuse, offering them a safe space to speak out, access therapy, and start the journey to recovery. Through a multidisciplinary approach, the center works hand-in-hand with law enforcement, the Department of Social Services, and other partners to ensure no child is left behind. With nearly 1,000 children served in 2023 alone, the CAC’s impact is undeniable. Today, we’re sitting down with the team behind this essential organization to learn more about their mission, upcoming events, and how we can all contribute to making Spartanburg a safer, more supportive place for children. Can you tell us a little bit about the mission of the Children’s Advocacy Center and the impact it has on the Spartanburg community? The mission of the Children’s Advocacy Center of Spartanburg, Cherokee, and Union Counties (CAC) is to heal and give voice to abused children through assessment, treatment, education, and community partnerships. In 2023, CAC served 973 children and conducted 3,350 therapy sessions. What are some of the key services your team provides for children and families who come through the center?Since 1995, CAC has provided critical services for children and families who have been affected by sexual abuse, severe physical abuse, and exposure to violence. CAC receives referrals primarily from the Department of Social Services and law enforcement. The CAC model pulls together a multidisciplinary child abuse response team, consisting of law enforcement, DSS, the Solicitor's Office, and other partners to reduce the number of interviews for children and ensure no child falls through the cracks. CAC provides a safe place for children to talk with a highly trained, licensed clinician about the details of the abuse in the forensic assessment setting, coordinates child abuse medical evaluations (off-site), provides vital resources and information to families, and provides a myriad of evidence-based, best practice therapy modalities. What upcoming fundraising events should our readers be excited about, and how can they get involved?CAC is getting ready for the 30th annual Phantom Ball mailout campaign! This “event” started when we opened in 1995. CAC mails out invitations asking people to join in their "absence." Children’s artwork is proudly displayed on the front of the invitation with all things Halloween!CAC also hosts an annual fundraising event called “Race to Healing,” which takes place on the first Saturday in May. Guests don their derby attire and join us to watch the Kentucky Derby and raise money to help children heal from the trauma of abuse! The next Race to Healing is on May 3, 2025 at The Piedmont Club. How do these events make a difference in supporting the center’s mission? Any fun stories from past events? Our fundraising events help CAC continue to provide vital services at no cost to the family. They are also an opportunity for the entire community to join together to learn more about CAC and have fun! At our Race to Healing event, guests dress up in their best derby attire, enjoy live music, mint juleps, and a live viewing of the Kentucky Derby. For readers who can’t attend an event, what are other ways they can contribute or lend a helping hand?CAC is always looking for volunteers! Readers can also help by spreading the message of the need and vital services provided by CAC.How do donations directly support the children and families at the center, and what specific needs are you hoping to meet right now?Donations go directly to support the critical services at CAC. Monetary donations help fill the gap in funding for services, and in-kind donations of snacks, juice, and fidget toys go directly to children who come to our center. Can you share a success story or a moment where the Children’s Advocacy Center made a real difference for a child or family?Recently, CAC saw nine year old “Anna”. Anna was referred to CAC after a report of sexual abuse. During her forensic interview, Anna drew a picture of a broken heart with a bandaid over it. She told our Forensic Evaluator, “the broken heart is because all of this stuff is really hard to talk about, but I’m okay talking about it with you. You are the band-aid.”What partnerships with local businesses or organizations help support your mission? How can more businesses get involved?CAC is incredibly grateful to have partnered with businesses like “Armoire” in April for “CAC Day” where 10% of proceeds go to CAC. SOCIETY OF LIESBY LAUREN LING BROWNMaya has returned to Princeton for her college reunion—it’s been a decade since she graduated, and she is looking forward to seeing old faces and reminiscing about her time there. This visit is special because Maya will also be attending the graduation of her little sister, Naomi. But what should have been a dream weekend becomes Maya’s worst nightmare when she receives the news that Naomi is dead. The police are calling it an accident, but Maya suspects that there is more to the story than they are letting on.As Maya pieces together what happened in the months leading up to her sister’s death, she begins to realize how much Naomi hid from her. Despite Maya’s warnings, Naomi had joined Sterling Club, the most exclusive social club on campus—the same one Maya belonged to. And if she had to guess, Naomi was likely tapped for the secret society within it.The more Maya uncovers, the more terrified she becomes that Naomi’s decision to follow in her footsteps might have been what got her killed. Because Maya’s time at Princeton wasn’t as wonderful as she’d always made it seem—after all, her sister wasn’t the first young woman to turn up dead. Now every clue is leading Maya back to the past... and to the secret she’s kept all these years.ABOUT THE AUTHOR //Lauren is a writer and editor based in Los Angeles, California.Growing up, she loved to read. She remember trips to the library with her mom and sister, their arms filled with as many books as they could carry.Fascinated by how stories can shape our understanding of the world, Lauren majored in English at Princeton and film production and screenwriting at USC School of Cinematic Arts. For the past decade, she’s worked as an editor and cutting assistant on documentaries, TV shows, films, and commercials for HBO, Netflix, Disney, and more.

36For Nancy Crittenden, Halloween isn’t just a one-day affair—it’s a month-long celebration of creativity, fun, and a little bit of spook! Each October, this Greenville native and mom of four transforms herself into a new character every day, thrilling her family, friends, and an online fanbase. (Be sure to follow her Insta account @nancycbeauty!) From intricate makeup designs inspired by popular characters to playful, easy-to-recreate looks, Nancy’s love for artistic expression shines through. How did you get the idea to transform yourself into a different character every day for the month of October?I’ve been the go-to girl for beauty tips and tricks among my friends for years, so I started sharing ideas and tips, and posting a few makeup looks for fun. People began telling me they looked forward to it every Halloween season, so I started adding more looks each year. It became an especially bright spot for some during the pandemic. Some years I’ve done one look a day, but as you can imagine, juggling four boys’ schedules can get pretty hectic so it’s not always consistent! How do you choose the characters you portray each day? Is there a theme, or do you decide on the fly? When I first started, I decided on looks on the fly. But as interest grew, I began planning ahead! Now I plan weeks, sometimes months, in advance. I look for popular characters, save photos for inspiration, and keep an eye on what’s relevant each year. People also send me requests!Which look has been the most dicult to create? How about the easiest?Among the most difficult were my Avatar and Venom looks. Any look that incorporates the shoulders, décolleté area, and lots of detail takes a lot of time! Surprisingly, one of the most popular was also one of the easiest: Winifred Sanderson. What do your kids think about this tradition? When they were younger, some of my looks would surprise (or even spook) them! Now they hurry home from school to see what crazy character I’ve turned into that day. They even suggest ideas for me to try!Do you have any tips for other moms who want to try creative makeup but feel like they don’t have the time or skills? My advice would be to look on Instagram or Pinterest for inspiration! There are also lots of quick how-to videos online. This year, I plan to include some easier, more accessible looks, so check those out! My suggestion is to just give it a try—you might surprise yourself! Animals are often the easiest and most forgiving. Add some features like a nose, color around the eyes, and pop on a cute headband with ears. Voila! You’ve got this! What is your Halloween costume this year?Funnily enough, I don’t usually have an elaborate costume on Halloween! I often post a look I pre-recorded or photographed, and my focus is on getting my boys ready for trick-or-treating. I usually throw on some animal ears and facial features— it’s great in a pinch! How else do you express yourself creatively?I love anything art-related! I got into my trade because of my love for creating. I still enjoy keeping up with the latest hair and makeup trends. I also love coloring and painting, and recently, I’ve tried embroidery and crocheting. What treat are you most likely to sneak from your kids’ candy haul?Ooh, tough one! I think I’d have to say 100 Grand!NANCY CRITTENDENSTAY-AT-HOME MOM & MAKEUP ARTIST

38TRIFFtryoninternationalfilmfestival.orgOctober 10-October 13As the Tryon International Film Festival (TRIFF) prepares for its highly anticipated 10th anniversary, we had the chance to sit down with Beau Menetre, co-founder and current board treasurer of the festival. Beau offers a unique perspective on how this small-town event has grown into a cultural beacon for film lovers and filmmakers alike. From its humble beginnings under the Polk County Film Initiative to attracting big names like actor Matthew Modine, TRIFF continues to shape the creative landscape of the region while maintaining its roots in community and the arts. Let’s dive into what makes this festival so special and what attendees can expect this year.Beau, how did the festival originally come to be, and what inspired its creation? The mission of the organization that oversees TRIFF, the Polk County Film Initiative (PCFI) is to bolster independent and major motion picture film production & media arts education for youth and adults in Western NC & the surrounding region. PCFI began in 2014 with a one-year film-making course for youth, titled the Next Generation Film Project. In 2015, PCFI launched its first annual fall film festival, the Tryon International Film Festival (TRIFF). PCFI and its signature film festival and year-round education offerings fill a gap in media arts education in the region and provide a catalyst for creative and economic development. PCFI is guided by its active, volunteer Board of Directors & TRIFF Planning Team and informed by its Advisory Council. PCFI’s Executive Director and Education Director implement goals and strategies, which are supported annually by over 100 volunteers.Where is the festival held, and what can attendees expect from the location and venues?TRIFF is held in the quant small town of Tryon, NC in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The festival covers multiple venues across the entire community from the Historic Tryon Theatre, Tryon Fine Arts Center, Upstairs Artspace, Tryon Depot Room, The Fitzgerald Event Center, Sunnydale Event Center and Carri Bass Photography Studio. What makes the Tryon International Film Festival unique compared to other film festivals? The festival stands out for its small-town charm, strong community involvement, diverse film programming, and interactive experiences like Q&A sessions. Set against the scenic backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains, it also emphasizes emerging filmmakers, providing a platform for new talent. What kind of films and genres will be showcased this year? The Tryon International Film Festival typically showcases a diverse range of films and genres, which may include independent films, documentaries, shorts, and feature films across various genres such as drama, comedy, thriller, and more. The festival often emphasizes storytelling and artistic expression, providing a platform for filmmakers to present their unique voices. How do filmmakers submit their work, and what is the selection process like? FilmFreeway is an online platform that allows filmmakers to submit their films to various film festivals around the world. It provides a centralized space where filmmakers can find, apply to, and track submis-sions to dierent festivals, making the process more ecient. FilmFreeway also offers tools for festival organizers to manage submissions, screen films, and communicate with filmmakers. The platform is known for its user-friendly interface and is widely used by both emerging and established filmmakers. What impact has the festival had on the local community and film industry since it began? The Tryon International Film Festival boosts local tourism, supports small businesses, and creates jobs. It enhances the cultural scene, generates media exposure, and offers networking opportunities for filmmakers, benefiting both the local economy and the arts community. Can you share any exciting highlights or special guests to look forward to this year?We have many notable guests coming to TRIFF this year, but most recognizable will be veteran actor Matthew Modine, known for his compelling roles in films such as *Full Metal Jacket* and *The Dark Knight Rises*. Modine will join audiences on Friday, October 11, for the screening of *Martini Shot*, a feature film in the festival’s diverse lineup. We are incredibly excited to welcome Matthew Modine to our festival. His presence adds a remarkable level of prestige and excitement to our 10th anniversary celebration. You can find all information about the event, tickets, educational activities, and scheduling on our website: tryoninternationalfilmfestival.org

Self-CheckSelf-CheckSelf-Check & Strength& Strength& StrengthA COMPLETE GUIDE TO BREASTCANCER PREVENTION AND NUTRITIONBreast cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women, but awareness and prevention can be your greatest allies. While we often hear about the importance of early detection, many women may not know exactly how to perform a self-examination or which foods support breast health. This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re breaking down two vital pillars of prevention: self-examinations and nutrition.Step-by-Step Guide to Self-Checks: Take Control of Your Health Regular self-examinations are an essential part of early detection, and when done correctly, they can help you identify changes that may signal breast cancer. Experts recommend that women start doing self-checks in their 20s, becoming familiar with the normal look and feel of their breasts.HERE’S A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE ON HOW TO PERFORM A BREAST SELF-EXAM:In Front of the Mirror:Stand in front of a mirror with your shoulders straight and arms on your hips.Look for changes in shape, size, or symmetry. Pay attention to any dim-pling, puckering, or bulging of the skin. Check if the nipple has changed position or if there’s redness, sore-ness, rash, or swelling.Raise Your Arms:Lift your arms above your head and look for the same changes as before.Check for any fluid coming from one or both nipples, which could be watery, milky, yellow, or tinged with blood.Feel for Changes While Lying Down:Lie on your back, as this helps flatten the breast tissue, making it easier to feel.Use the pads of your first three fingers to feel for lumps or thickening. Move in a circular motion, following a pattern that ensures you cover the entire breast, from the collarbone to the top of the abdomen, and from the armpit to the middle of your chest.Use different levels of pressure: light pressure for the tissue just beneath the skin, medium pressure for deeper tissue, and firm pressure to feel the tissue closest to the chest wall.Feel for Changes While Standing or Sitting:Some women find it easiest to do this part of the exam in the shower. Follow the same steps as when lying down, using circular motions to check your entire breast. It’s important to repeat this process monthly, around the same time each month (preferably after your period, when breasts are less tender or swollen). If you notice any changes, don’t panic—most breast changes are not cancer. However, it’s crucial to bring any concerns to your healthcare provider for further evaluation.NUTRITION FOR PREVENTION: FUEL YOUR BODY WITH CANCER-FIGHTING FOODSWhile self-checks can help detect potential issues early, maintaining a healthy lifestyle—particularly when it comes to nutrition—can help reduce your overall risk of breast cancer. What you eat plays a significant role in your overall health, and certain foods are known to provide cancer-fighting benefits. Here are some of the top nutrient-packed foods that can support breast health and help reduce the risk of breast cancer:Berries (Blueberries, Strawberries, Blackberries):Rich in antioxidants like vitamin C and flavonoids, berries help protect cells from damage. They’re also high in fiber, which has been shown to lower estrogen levels, potentially reducing breast cancer risk.Cruciferous Vegetables (Broccoli, Kale, Brussels Sprouts):These vegetables contain compounds called glucosinolates, which have cancer-fighting properties. Broccoli, in particular, contains sulforaphane, which may help block the growth of breast cancer cells.Fatty Fish (Salmon, Mackerel, Sardines):Omega-3 fatty acids found in these fish have been linked to reducing inflammation and lowering the risk of breast cancer. Regularly incorporating fatty fish into your diet can also support heart health, making it a win-win for your body.Leafy Greens (Spinach, Collard Greens, Swiss Chard):Dark, leafy greens are packed with fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants that help detoxify the body and reduce the risk of cancer. Spinach, for example, is rich in folate, which supports cell health and repair.Nuts and Seeds (Almonds, Walnuts, Flaxseeds):These are great sources of healthy fats and antioxidants. Walnuts, in particular, contain omega-3s and phytosterols that may block estrogen receptors in breast cancer cells, slowing their growth. Flaxseeds are rich in lignans, which also help balance hormone levels.Whole Grains (Quinoa, Brown Rice, Oats):Whole grains provide fiber and essential nutrients that help regulate hormone levels, especially estrogen. A diet rich in whole grains has been associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer.Garlic and Onions:Both garlic and onions contain allicin and quercetin, compounds that have been shown to reduce the risk of cancer by slowing the growth of tumors. Incorporating them into meals adds flavor and cancer-fight-ing power.Green Tea:Known for its powerful antioxidants, green tea contains catechins, which have been found to slow the growth of cancer cells and protect against DNA damage.BALANCING PREVENTION: THE POWER OF AWARENESS AND HEALTHY CHOICESCombining regular self-examinations with a nutrient-rich diet gives you a two-pronged approach to breast cancer prevention. Being proactive in monitoring your body and making conscious dietary choices can go a long way in supporting your long-term health. In addition to the self-checks and foods mentioned, don’t forget to stay on top of routine screenings, such as mammograms, especially if you have a family history of breast cancer. Knowledge is power, and taking these simple steps can help empower you and those around you to stay vigilant. This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, let’s not just wear pink—let’s take action. From your kitchen to your self-care routine, you have the tools to support your health and well-being, all while raising awareness for an important cause.

44JOSIE’S JUMPERSIf you’re looking for the ultimate party upgrade, Siera Schall’s business, Josie’s Jumpers, is the answer. With bright, modern inflatables that add charm and excitement to any event, this local, family-run company has been making celebrations extra special since early 2023. In this fun interview, we sit down with Siera to dive into how it all began, what makes her jumpers stand out, and why her team is bouncing their way into the hearts of families all over the Upstate!
45Siera, let’s start with a bounce! Can you tell us how Josie’s Jumpers got started? What inspired you to leap into this business?Josie’s Jumpers was started at the end of 2022 with our first rental in January of 2023. I was on materni-ty leave with our now 2.5 year old, Sadie! My husband Bill and I were always renting inflat-ables for our 10 year old daughter’s birthday parties, so he always wanted to get into that business. I told him that was not what I wanted to be doing on our weekends. Fast forward to aesthetically pleasing, modern white bounce houses coming on scene and I was in! The idea that we are creating pretty AND fun events for clients drove my pas-sion to start the business. We jumped all in and bought 10 units right away. Josie means “God increases” and we have definitely seen that faithfulness in the past 2 years! We now have over 20+ units and have even added water slides to our inventory. Our business is truly a family run business as each bounce house is named after all of our kids, cousins, and even pets! What makes Josie’s Jumpers stand out from other bounce house companies in the area? Do you have any unique themes or designs? We stand out because our bounce houses are all solid colors and can match any theme! The best part of the bounce house is the open front so you can actually see the kids jumping. It makes it easier for guests to get in and out quickly and make it so the whole party can enjoy the jumper! From backyard parties to big community events, what’s been your favorite type of celebration to be part of? Any memorable stories?Oh, so many events! We have truly loved them all. We’ve been a part of markets, grand-openings, venue open houses, weddings, 1st birthday parties, 30th birthday parties, sorority rush week, bridal shop events and lots of birthdays in between.Do you oer a variety of sizes and styles of bounce houses for dierent age groups or event types? We have several different sizes, colors and styles! Our largest and most popular is our Darcy jumper, that is 17X17 and all white with castle points! However, our light pink, the Miranda, is in close second. Our sizes include a 13X13 white, pink and purple option. 16x16 comes in blue, black, white and pink. We have a hot pink 14X14 and then we have a few with a slide and ball pit. Our newest jumper called the Zeus, includes 2 slides and a jump space in the middle. Then we recently got a jumper/water slide option that was very popular this summer and can be used with a ball pit in the cooler months. We have bounce houses for all ages! Safety first! Can you share how you ensure the bounce houses are safe and ready for fun?Yes! Safety is our number one priority. Our bounce houses are made from commercial grade pvc material and we stake or sandbag every bouncer. If the bounce house is 300lbs, then we have 300 lbs of weight on our jumpers. We use heavy duty stakes to make sure the jumpers are secure. We also do not set up a jumper if the forecast calls for wind speeds of 15 MPH. We are insured so you can have peace of mind that our company cares about your attendees having fun at your event, but also being safe! Can you tell us a bit about how the rental process works? How far in advance should customers book, and what’s included in the package? We try to make our rental process simple! A guest would fill out an inquiry on our website, josiesjumpers.com and we reach out via text/call to gather any details about the party. We require a 50% deposit to secure the jumper and we take bookings up to a year in advance or a week before. There is no cut o for when we will take a booking, however if you want a specific jumper we suggest at least 2+ months in advance. We only have 1 of certain bouncers so once that is booked it is no longer available! We know Josie’s Jumpers is a family business! How does your team juggle running a business and managing all the fun behind the scenes?Yes, we have 4 kids and they come to the drop-offs and help when it makes sense! Our kids love helping and often times are our testers before the party starts! It can definitely be challenging to juggle at times, but we are teaching our kids valuable lessons of hard work, commitment and being helpful and that makes it all worth it.For anyone looking to book for the first time, how can they reach you? Share your contact info, website, and social media handles!Sending an inquiry through our website, www.josiesjumpers.com will always be the best way to keep everything in one place. If you have any questions you can also call or text Siera at 864-381-4255 and if you want to give us a follow and see more of our units follow us on Instagram, @Josies_jumpers. We are also on Facebook under Josie’s Jumpers!October is perfect for outdoor events. Do you have any special oers or recommendations for fall festivals and Halloween parties? We love October, it is the perfect weather for outdoor events. We have several options available but if you are looking for a Halloween party reach out to book our black jumper for the perfect party addition! What’s next for Josie’s Jumpers? Are there any new additions or exciting plans for the future that we should keep an eye on?We are really focusing on who we are as a company. We have tried some add ons in the past, but ultimately we want to be really good at jumpers! You can guarantee that each year we will add jumpers that are popular for our guests. If you see a jumper that you’d like for us to add to our inventory, please reach out- chances are we’ll be very tempted to buy it! We appreciate all of our clients and love working with new families, so thank you for giving us the chance to create new and fun memories for you!
