During this study abroad experience,we’ll be based at Calabash Caye Field Stationon the eastern edge of Turneffe Atoll, in oneof the most biologically diverse ecosystemswith mangrove forests, seagrass beds, andreef habitats at our doorstep. This program will bring GEOL 1345 to life.You’ll explore ocean waves, shorelineprocesses, chemical oceanography, anddifferent marine ecosystems above andbelow the waterline. You’ll collect data in thefield, investigate unique habitats, and watchcoastal processes in action along dynamicshorelines. Every activity is a chance toconnect your classroom knowledge to theliving ocean around us. Living and learning at the research stationmeans you get a front-row seat tosustainability in action. From solar and windenergy to rainwater catchment, you’ll see andparticipate in practices only previously readabout in books. You may even get toparticipate in ongoing research conducted bythe station staff that will deepen yourscientific skills while highlighting the humandimensions of environmental stewardship,such as helping to monitor ecosystem healthor counting invasive or endangered species. By the end of our time in Belize, you’ll havewitnessed firsthand the delicate balance ofmarine ecosystems and connected theory topractice in our day to day experiences.
