The BASA Handbook 20242WelcomeWelcome to the 2024 edition of the BASA Member’s Handbook, where we aim to provide members and other parties with information about the adhesives and sealants industry in the UK and Ireland. With over 90 member companies, BASA is the business association for the adhesive and sealants industry in the UK and Ireland. In this Handbook you will find information about each member company and an overview of the work of the association. A comprehensive ‘where to buy’ Directory for adhesives, sealants, raw materials and ancillary products, the industry’s Trade Names, Technical Standards, plus useful guidance documents and further valuable information, can be found on our website at www.basa.uk.comTogether, this handbook and website offers specifiers, users and members of the association virtually everything they need to know about the industry and its products.BASA is an unincorporated Trade Association formed in 1983 from the marriage of two long established associations, the British Adhesives Manufacturers Association and the Sealant Manufacturers Conference. Set up to act as the voice for the industry, BASA supports its members by representing and promoting the industry, offering guidance on technical and compliance issues, organising networking opportunities for members, and providing members with support services. The Association is managed and run on a day-to-day basis by a Secretariat, who work under contract by a voluntary Council of senior industry representatives appointed from current member Companies under the rules of the BASA Constitution.BASA is an independent National trade body dedicated solely to the interests of the adhesives and sealants industry and we liaise with Government regarding legislation to keep members abreast of UK, EU and International proposals and initiatives. In addition to promoting the interest of industry, BASA’s aim is to raise technical standards to assist members and customers in the Who are BASAIn 2023 we posted over 1,400 documents to the members area of the BASA website. The Secretariat, Consultants and Technical Working Groups responded to over 700 issues;• EU initiated (7%)• UK/BASA (45%)• CPA/Construction (25%)• FEICA (14%)• BSI/other (9%)

Information gathered by working groups often provides useful materials for leaflets or papers given to conference.BASA supports the vision of FEICA, the Association of the European Adhesive & Sealant Industry, that the adhesive and sealant industry is committed to enabling a growing population to live a better life and to use the planet’s resources responsibly and efficiently. In light of the transition to a circular economy, BASA supports efforts to improve product efficiency and circularity to help create a more sustainable society, promoting the concepts of energy saving, material efficiency, repairability, durability and recycling. We will encourage members to continue developing solutions for energy efficiency, to enable the efficient use of raw materials and to continue to safeguard the environment and people’s health.

The BASA Handbook 20248Technical OverviewJim Palmer, BASA Technical OfficerThe anticipated regulatory challenges we face this year are still not as transparent as we all would like. The combined confusion created by the delayed UK REACH legislation, the remaking of the UK version of the Construction Products Regulation, following the Building Safety Bill receiving Royal assent, and the Retained EU Legislation Bill, enacted on 29th June 2023, which removed a number of the European Regulations from our statute books at the end of 2023. Plus, the new procedures within the HSE to deal with the GB Classification Labelling and Packaging rules and the updating of the GB Mandatory Classification List, all make our lives difficult. Meantime the EU machine rolls on and we are beginning to see divergence, between our legislation and Europe. BASA will, of course, aim to provide the appropriate guidance and timely advice to assist members in weaving their way through this maize, via a variety of routes. On the BASA website, we have issued and kept updated many guidance documents to help members navigate the pitfalls whether they are supplying single or multiple markets in GB, UK, EU or worldwide. These guides have been collated on our website into a BASA Issues Map: www.basa.uk.com/WorkingGroups/ArticleDetails?articleId=1835, which is the leaping off point to find the guidance to assist members with their specific issues.During the pandemic, which is thankfully behind us, we all engaged in new ways of working with virtual online meetings becoming the norm as the software platforms developed. One BASA initiative during this time was the instigation of weekly half hour ‘clinic’ sessions each Friday morning. These sessions will continue throughout 2024 and for the foreseeable future. They are open to all members to join, and the BASA consultants are available to answer any questions (or to undertake to seek the answers) for everyone’s benefit. Some sessions are open for any topic, and some are themed, though there is always an opportunity to raise any relevant issue each week. We have also invited a number of industry and government experts as guest presenters on a variety of matters and will continue to do this to add value to the membership.. All the sessions are recorded and are available for review on the website: www.basa.uk.com/WorkingGroups/Group/16), where you will also find the list of upcoming sessions.Environmental and Sustainability issues are a focus both in the UK and EU and BASA has a dedicated working group covering this very broad subject area. In this working group, and all the other working groups, for that matter, we continue to monitor and contribute to the relevant EU

Page 11

www.basa.uk.com 9developments in the FEICA groups as well as focusing on the UK changes. Of particular relevance in the UK E&S area are the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) proposals, following on from the recently introduced Plastics Packaging Tax, and the initiatives to reduce carbon dependency also known as Net – Zero.We are very fortunate to have a wealth of experience and expertise within the technical community of BASA working hard to interpret the implications for our industry of the various scenarios as they develop, often in advance of their implementation, and to communicate them both to members and back to our government. Taking part in the BASA working groups is an excellent way to keep up with the latest developments and I would encourage anyone to think about volunteering. As these meetings are all virtual the time commitment is a matter of personal choice, and can be minimal, but those who participate more fully find it a great contribution to their own personal development, as well as keeping up to date with and influencing the development of each topic. Please do explore the members area of the BASA website to see what appeals. Of course, face to face meetings are vitally necessary to develop the working relationships between us and we plan to hold at least one Open Industry Forum meeting each year to enable the working group members to engage in person. The BASA Handbook 202412European Model Environmental Product Declarations (Model EPDs)European Model EPDs demonstrate the environmental credentials of adhesives and sealants in construction Sustainable development is of great significance in the construction industry. Increasingly, architects and green procurement bodies are demanding products that meet international sustainability standards. FEICA’s position on the Construction Products Regulation can be read on the FEICA and BASA website. The review of the Construction Products Regulation (EU) No. 305/2011) included the requirement for sustainability, and Belgium and France have national legislation requiring Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for construction products with an environmental claim. From 2016 to 2022, FEICA offered Model Environmental Product Declarations (Model EPDs), which could be used by construction products manufacturers to prove the environmental impact of their products. Therefore, the choice of adhesive and sealant products available to architects and green procurement bodies was significantly increased. The expansion of the range of Did you know? As BASA are National Association Members of FEICA, all BASA members have access to these Model EPDs.products with Model EPDs gives SMEs improved access to a market that is otherwise available only to some and leads to significant cost and time savings for companies. As Model EPDs are valid only for a maximum of 6 years, the 2016 versions were updated in 2022. FEICA, Industrieverband Klebstoffe (IVK), the European Federation for Construction Chemicals (EFCC) and Deutsche Bauchemie e.V. (DBC) undertook a joint project to revise and extend the Model EPDs, as well as to extend the scope for additional substances and formulations. The European Model EPDs are available to FEICA Direct Company Members (DCMs), Affiliate Company Members (ACMs) and FEICA National Association Members (NAMs). They are valid across the whole of Europe (not limited to the EU). Turkey, is not included.

Sold in the UK since 2014 Fix-A-Floor UK is the market leader in its floor repair adhesive which is now available in over 50 countries worldwide. The key to the product’s effectiveness is its combination of a very powerful and flexible adhesive with elastomeric properties, combined with an extremely low viscosity prior to curing. This means that it will flow under a tile completely filling the void underneath it and ensuring an end to wobbly and loose tiles – which are obviously more prone to breaking, if not fixed down quickly. Fix-A-Floor is Strong & Flexible and cures with elastomeric bonding properties which can eliminate any future problems due to foundation settlement, expansion & contraction of the sub floor as well as poor original installation.
