THE MESSENGER GOOD SAMARITAN CHURCH NEWSLETTER VOLUME 109 ISSUE 3 MARCH 2020 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK FAREWELL FOR NOW In his letter to his favorite church a healthy thriving intimate congregation much like our own the Apostle Paul writes I thank my God every time I remember you In all my prayers for all of you I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now being confident of this that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus My own pastor heart departs on sabbatical with much the same sentiment I am profoundly grateful for nearly 6 years of ministry alongside you You are people with beautiful stories and hearts for building beloved community and it has been such a joy to serve with you and pursue God s love together I pray this is a time of renewal for all of us when the Spirit really enlivens us as we step out of our comfort zones experience new things and hear a lot of new perspectives on God community and love experiences that I hope will expand and hone our vision and calling as a congregation I will be praying for you your well being and your spiritual growth each and every day I covet your prayers for me and my family as well for safety and health for learning and growth for deepening relationships for rest and reconnection and mostly for renewal so that I come back to you with more to give ready to dive whole heartedly once more into our work together of building God s beloved community right here in Pinellas County I leave you with my love and God s immense grace and peace Pastor Jen Follow the Daysa Family s Journey while they are away Family Blog https sabbathwithkids com Pastor Jen s Blog https www discovergoodsam org adventuresincommunity Overview of the Daysa Family Sabbatical trip PLEASE KEEP THE DAYSA FAMILY IN YOUR DAILY PRAYERS 1

WATCH FOR YOUR INVITATION TO A COMMUNITY MEAL These meals are designed to be intersections between community groups that use our building and the members of Good Samaritan church It is our hope that they Build the Beloved Community and strengthen our relationships with these neighbors of ours All members and friends regular attenders of Good Sam will receive an invitation to attend one of these meals during Pastor Jen s sabbatical If you cannot attend the meal to which you are invited let us know and we will invite you to another If for some reason you do not receive an invitation to any of the community meals by mid May please alert one of the Sabbatical Team members We don t want anyone to be left out Make sure you RSVP This allows the hosts to plan for a specific number of guests and prepare the food accordingly Attending these meals adds another stamp to your Sabbatical passport We have a lot of guests that use our facility each month including AIDS Partnership Head Start Circle of Faith Baptist Church the National Organization for Women NOW among many others We also have many guests who are food or housing insecure who come on campus seeking assistance from our food pantry or our pastoral staff We want to get to know them put a name to their faces show them some extravagant hospitality and let them teach us something about community Our hope is that when you attend you sit across the table from someone you don t know start a conversation with them and make them feel welcome at Good Sam in a new and deeper way As you attend any event or regular church service during the sabbatical don t forget to bring your passport Write your reflections to share with Pastor Jen when she returns YOUR SABBATICAL TEAM Gretchen Ackerson Session Resource Development Grant Team Member Ginger Breitkreutz Care Team Judy Friend Justice Mercy 6 Beryl Fruth Session Resource Development Debbie Rasmussin Spiritual Formation Carolyn Woodard Session Fellowship Outreach Grant Team Member

FAST JUSTICE NEWS This is an extremely important month as FAST culminates its research on our justice issues and presents recommendations to leaders of our community The RALLY is Thursday March 12 7 00 PM at the First Baptist Church 1900 Gandy Blvd N St Petersburg Our three committees will present their research reports and recommendations for action Each congregation will caucus to report on how many persons each network member is bringing to the action and tickets will be distributed Our powerful NEHEMIAH ACTION is Monday March 30 7 00 PM First Baptist Church of Indian Rocks 12685 Ulmerton Road Largo We are pledging at least 75 persons representing Good Sam to be in attendance Our County Commissioners and School Board Members are invited to attend and to indicate if they will follow our recommendations This is grass roots action to bring about justice in our community and it is a moving experience We hope all who are able will attend and bring friends and neighbors who care about affordable housing about providing adequate mental health care about teaching restorative justice in our schools This is our opportunity to make a difference in Pinellas County Let s do it Submitted by Bev Kelly How do we stand FAST TOGETHER One can choose to go back toward safety or forward toward growth Growth must be chosen again and again fear must be overcome again and again Abraham Maslow DIRECTORY CXS Our new 2020 Directories have come out and already we have some corrections Please mark these changes in your personal copy We will be placing these changes in the newsletter as they are provided Gretchen Ackerson and Katie Fullerton have a new permanent winter address in Clearwater Please make a note of it in your church directory 29141 US Highway 19 N Clearwater FL 33761 7 ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT ANNOUNCEMENTS Beginning the first Sunday in 2020 announcements will be handled differently Announcements are important because they help us communicate what is happening in the life of our church Sometimes however when not planned ahead they are just pieces of information that don t give the whole story For example we may announce who what where and when but a lot of the times we forget the WHY or the purpose of this event So beginning Sunday January 5 all announcements will be read by a designated person from a form that you will need to fill out The blank forms will be located on the Narthex bulletin board While it is preferred that we have the form filled out the Sunday PRIOR to when the announcement needs to be made if an announcement must be made on a particular Sunday the form must be given to Debbie Rasmussin no later than 10 15 a m on that morning Submitted by Debbie Rasmussin

FEATURED MINISTERS IN MARCH Each month the featured ministers will be listed in the newsletter along with a bio and a photo The ministers listed below in alphabetical order will be ministering to us during the month of March Each minister was given the following invitation Our congregation and pastor hope to engage in parallel experiences that will expand and deepen our understanding of how to build beloved community We intend them to be experiences that 1 remind us what it is like to be in new and unfamiliar territory 2 give us insight into the best practices for establishing community among diverse people coming from different backgrounds 3 expose us to other cultures and practices of building community 4 deepen already established community and 5 help us reflect on community formation in the early church In particular we hope to explore how shared meals meal preparation and table rituals function in community formation We ask that you design a worship experience around the theme Stranger in a Strange Land BIO REV JEAN COOLEY delegation to Nicaragua in 1986 acting as human shields during the height of the US backed Contra War The whole family participated in anti nuclear war activities in Roanoke and Washington DC When Jean s call to the ministry of word and sacrament could no longer be ignored they returned to Richmond where Jean entered Union Seminary Bill accepted a call to All Souls Presbyterian Church All Souls is a predominantly AfricanAmerican congregation Bill s 12 year ministry was a model of racial reconciliation Students and faculty from the Seminary and PSCE joined the church including students from other countries The church developed community outreach in the local public schools After Jean graduated from with her M Div she accepted a call from the seminary to work in student services She was ordained to that position in 1990 Not long after beginning that job she was appointed Dean of Students While in that position she co authored the curriculum Breaking down the Walls Responding to the Racism that Divides Us for the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program After both sons had gone off to college and both of Bill and Jean s mothers were widowed and living in Florida they returned to Florida in 1999 They had accepted a call to Tims Memorial Presbyterian Church in Lutz as co pastors Then in 2004 they were called to Westminster Presbyterian Church Lakeland It was there that they helped the church revitalize and become a More Light congregation The church became advocates for immigrants and in cooperation with an ecumenical and community partnership held a monthly free legal clinic for undocumented people They also hosted the Coalition of Immokalee Workers staff while they organized their actions against Publix for five years Discerning that it was time to retire Bill and Jean with many tears left Westminster and Lakeland They returned to St Petersburg where they had first met Both Bill and Jean have siblings living here Jean s sister Becky McAllister worships regularly at Good Sam where Jean is grateful to be Parish Associate They also volunteer as Guardian ad litem for Pinellas County Bill leads retreats on spiritual growth and is a spiritual director Jean is deeply involved in justice ministry with FAST They are grateful for the welcome they have found at Good Samaritan Their son Rodger is married to Mary Lass Stewart They have two daughters Nell age 13 and Clover age 10 Rodger is an expert in urban agriculture He is director of the Chicago Food Policy Action Council that works with the city to develop policies for food justice Bill and Jean met at Florida Presbyterian College now Eckerd College in 1964 Both of them were children of clergy Bill s father was Presbyterian Jean s father was UCC and a Navy Chaplain They were married at Lakeview Presbyterian Church St Petersburg not long after graduation in 1968 They drove to Chicago during the 1968 Democratic Convention riots and arrived in an unsettled city While attending the University of Chicago Bill at the Divinity School and Jean at the School of Social Work they lived in a Christian commune with other students from the Divnity School They participated in anti Vietnam war demonstrations and worked in the inner city After Bill finished his M Th in theology and an MSW in social work and Jean had worked as a school social worker with her MSW they returned to Florida in 1972 They had had enough of the Chicago winters and Jean was pregnant with their first child Settling in Sarasota they joined 1st Presbyterian Church and became involved in revitalizing the young adult ministry and developed an informal worship service that drew in families and young people Bill worked as a family and marriage counselor and after their son Rodger was born Jean worked for the Manatee County Mental Health Center with children youth and families Their second son David was born 4 years later During this time Jean was ordained a ruling elder at 1st Presbyterian in 1973 one of the first women ordained there Bill began learning spiritual direction and with the help of his director Bill answered a call to ordained ministry It took Jean four months and a lot of prayer to agree In August of 1978 they sold their lovely house in Sarasota and headed to Richmond VA for Bill to attend Union Theological Seminary They lived in a student apartment on campus Jean worked part time as a social worker and then entered the Presbyterian School of Christian Education to receive an M A in Christian Education While Bill finished his Doctor of Ministry degree Jean was interim DCE at 2nd Presbyterian Church Richmond Bill s first call to ministry was at a semi rural suburban congregation in Roanoke VA Jean worked for a Christian non profit then became a DCE in Salem VA Bill learned the art of ministry while keeping the congregation from leaving the denomination over the issue of ordination of women Jean became involved with the local Peace and Justice Center and connected with the Presbyterian national peacemaking office She participated in a two week Witness for Peace Presbyterian 8

Action for Strength Together Through this work Jacqueline connects with people of all different backgrounds across the county and helps them work together to fix community problems Her and her husband Gilberto live in St Petersburg and are active members of Allendale United Methodist Church David and his ex wife Jessica care for their Diego is 5 They live in Boulder CO David is a bi lingual English Spanish Case Manager for an non profit adult criminal justice diversion program that uses Restorative Justice to heal broken relationships BIO REV DR MIKE GRAVES I taught in seminaries for 30 years before retiring in 2018 to become Scholar in Residence at a Disciples church in Kansas City As I was transitioning from one to the other I wrote the book Table Talk It s about how the earliest followers of Jesus ate Communion which is to say it was more like a dinner party than formal ritual Since writing that book I ve shared what I learned with a number of congregations including the one where I now serve We not only practice a joyful Communion which we will do the Sunday I m with your congregation we even started small groups called Neighborhood Communion Groups These folks get together once a month or so to eat a meal drink some wine and discuss different spiritual topics Hard to believe but that is what church was like in the first century BIO MARTHA TAYLOR STORYTELLER I was born a Presbyterian P K preacher s kid I ve been a Southern Belle a real ding a ling from birth in North Carolina South Carolina at age two and Tennessee at age nine I finished college in Nashville then went to work in Alabama Tampa Pinellas on to Virginia and back to Largo My ancestors fought in the Confederacy and at King s Mountain North Carolina in the American Revolution From 4th grade thru 6th grade I attended a two room school house where I had the same teacher in the same room except when I had a homebound teacher In middle school I had an angel a librarian who could always recommend the perfect books to read From the guidance she gave me I decided to become a librarian I graduated from George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville with a B A in Elementary Education and a M A in Library Science I was recruited to Mobile Alabama Public Library as a children s librarian After three years there I was recruited by the Tampa Public Library as Coordinator of Children s Services during the time the Ashley Street Library was being built I met my husband there and after two years we moved to Pinellas County where his parents lived I retired for five years to have my two sons We visited Good Sam and joined in 1971 during Harold Brockus second year I taught Sunday School my husband was an elder and my sons went through confirmation at Good Sam Harold presided over my husband s memorial service and performed my youngest son s wedding When my sons were two and three years old I took a semester of classes at USF to get my Florida teaching certificate I was hired at Tomlinson on Mirror Lake in St Pete after working there for six weeks as a substitute Media Specialist After that I worked at PTEC St Pete and PTEC Clearwater before finishing my last six years at Tyrone Middle school In 2003 I retired after 30 years in the school system My mother at that time was 90 years old living in Virginia After being away from home for 40 years I needed her as much as she needed me so I sold my house and moved to Virginia I was privileged to spend the last 5 years of her life with her My youngest son also moved there Now I divide my time between Virginia and Largo and my two sons I have always enjoyed reading story telling and sewing So I spend my retirement creating and selling stuffed elephants at craft shows and using the profits to attend three storytelling festivals in Florida North Carolina and Tennessee I have become more of a listener than a teller recently but I still enjoy the occasional opportunity to tell BIO TENA NOCK HOPE MID Te a Nock Hope is originally from Washington DC She has lived all over the US from the East Coast to the Mid West because of having served in the United States Navy for 8 years Te a holds a B A in Psychology from USF GO BULLS She currently works at the James Haley VA Medical Center Te a is a member of First United Church of Tampa UCC where she formerly chaired the Communications Committee and was instrumental in expanding the use of social media to promote the message of God s love and extravagant welcome She is a Member in Discernment MID and is in her 4th year of PATHWAYS Theological Education Inc where she has already received her certificate of Foundational Theology Te a preached her first sermon in the UCC on 8 13 17 at Trinity UCC in ST Petersburg and has been preaching ever since She believes that she is called to parish ministry and is working towards ordination so that she can become a Pastor in the UCC Te a has a passion for God s people and God s creation She has a strong history in volunteering throughout the Tampa Bay area and has participated in activities such as Coastal Cleanups Paint Your Heart Out various run walks for different causes numerous Pride Parades and H O P E working to maintain Hope for Justice Te a is married to the beautiful Laurie Nock Hope who is accomplished in her own right and has been in marital bliss since September 19 2015 BIO JACQUELINE REYES FAST Jacqueline Reyes grew up in a navy family and lived various places across the country before attending University of Miami where she got a B A in political science international studies and economics She is currently the Lead Organizer of FAST Faith and 9
