2023 Annual Report 3Our Mission: Building One Community’s (B1C) mission is to advance the successful integration of immigrants and their families.Dear B1C Friends,We are thrilled to present our 2023 annual report, which celebrates immigrant contributions and highlights thepositive ripple effect of our work to advance the integration of immigrants and their families.The year marked tremendous growth and impact across all our programs.Milestone and Growth: We reached a milestone, engaging over 4,700 participants—31% more than in 2022, with 40% new to B1C. Our programs have not only matured but also flourished, playing a pivotal role in fostering exponential growth, particularly in our outreach efforts within the Haitian community. We fostered a robust support network for existing and new participants, encouraging our community to learn and take advantage of all our programs and services.Championing Immigrant Excellence: We remain steadfast in our goal to celebrate the extraordinary contributions of immigrants— crafting inspiring narratives. In 2023, we proudly unveiled the “We Are Stamford: Immigrants in the City that Works” Photography Exhibition showcasing a mosaic of immigrant achievements. It marks the beginning of a series of initiatives aimed at displaying the multitude of positive immigrant contributions and thus offering a more balanced narrative around immigration and immigrants.Empowering Generations: Our collective efforts have ignited lasting change. From English language instruction and skill-building programs to providing the necessary tools for starting businesses, navigating legal immigration complexities, and unlocking new job opportunities, our impact spans generations. Strengthening Anka Badurina, PhD Executive Director Eleanor Riemer Board Chairimmigrant parents’ confidence and skills fortifies the family unit and has a tremendous ripple effect on next generations.A Future Woven Together: To keep this momentum of positive change, we are dedicated to extending our reach through strategic statewide initiatives that bolster outreach, advocacy and resources to the immigrant community.Thank you for your support on this impactful journey. Together, we celebrate diversity and weave immigrants’ contributions into our community’s tapestry—today, tomorrow, and beyond!Warm regards,Eleanor Riemer

Sowing Seeds of Tomorrow: Empowering Youth to Shape a Brighter FutureNelson and Maria José, ages 9 and 6, came to the U.S. from Guatemala City four years ago and settled in Stamford with their parents. What they miss most about Guatemala is their grandparents, Mamita Lubia and Papito Juan. Their grandparents allowed them to take candy from the store they owned. They also played with them and bought them a dog. Nelson and Maria José miss their aunties, too, but they came to visit once as a surprise, and they were so happy to see them again! Maria José said they can’t wait to have Mamita Lubia and Papito Juan visit them here in the U.S.Maria José and Nelson love living in Stamford; what they like most are the stores, pizza, donuts, and their friends. They really enjoy going to school and like their teachers a lot. They don’t like homework, but they do like going to B1C’s Homework Club because they have fun and get help finishing their homework. When he grows up, Nelson wants to be a soccer player and Maria José wants to be a teacher because, she says, “What I like to do most is to help people. I also like to help poor people and give them food so that they are not hungry anymore.”2023 Annual Report10Scan the QR code to learn about our Academic Enrichment programs➜ Our Homework Club operates Monday through Thursday and provides support for Stamford Public School children from kindergarten to 5th grade. Students such as Maria José and Nelson benefit from personalized assistance and engaging academic enrichment activities.

From House Painter to Master Metal Worker & Business Owner:Juan’s Inspiring Journey to SuccessL ooping lines of gleaming stainless steel climb a staircase. Intricate, intersecting rectangles create a spectacular entry door. Juan, 51, a master metal worker, makes many wonders for lucky homeowners. Juan learned his trade in Colombia, but when he came to the U.S. he started off as a house painter. He says, “When you go to the Colombian Embassy to get your visa, they should hand you a paintbrush along with it. Every Colombian around here seems to start off as a house painter.”When he started his business, Juan went from gig to gig as a freelance worker. Now, he doesn’t need to; everyone comes to him for one of his beautiful creations. He spends his time teaching his nephew Gus, the next generation, all about the craft, the art, and the business of architectural fabrication. Juan has been a participant of B1C’s Skills Development Program and has run welding classes as an instructor.2023 Annual Report 11Scan the QR code to learn about our Skills Development programsOur Skills Development programs constantly seeks innovative ways to motivate and enhance the skills of our participants. Having Juan lead unique welding classes and inspiring our participants has been truly remarkable. His commitment to paying it forward shines through his teaching. ➜
