Transforming Safety Management Embracing the value of People First In the UK under the leadership of Andy May our QHSE Director significant strides have been made in the field of safety reducing work related fatalities from thousands to around 150 per year Embracing the value of People First Bidvest Noonan is committed to ensuring the health and safety of our workforce With the implementation of the new Health and Safety Management System HSMS we aim to enhance safety across our operations In our last issue we highlighted some of the updates and notable achievements of our health and safety team including restructuring the team to provide targeted support at regional and Business Unit levels the development of a new operationally focused health and safety management and creation of a SharePoint site as a central communications hub In addition to that we also recognised the challenges in our current safety management approach which often focused on avoiding negative outcomes rather than promoting positive outcomes Reframing Safety Expertise presented our health and safety team with three key challenges Engaging frontline colleagues in safety practices Reducing Safety Clutter Rethinking Bureaucracy and Legal Risk Bidvest Noonan s New Approach To enhance safety our health and safety team have devised a comprehensive plan with the following key elements This approach empowers our front line colleagues to take ownership of health and safety fostering a just and positive safety culture throughout the organisation Through these endeavors we aim to gain greater control over workplace hazards and risks ultimately preventing accidents and promoting overall well being Removing Bureaucratic Compliance Bidvest Noonan will shift away from a compliance driven approach to safety management encouraging proactive safety measures instead Frontline Engagement and Ownership Safety will become a shared responsibility among frontline operatives fostering a culture of safety ownership Making Safety Measurable Safety will be measured as an operational deliverable allowing for better tracking of safety performance Central Role of Hazard and Risk Assessment Task design will integrate hazard and risk assessments ensuring safety considerations are at the core of all activities Developing Competence in Safety Management Enhancing the knowledge and skills of managers in safety management is a priority 8 PERSPECTIVE AUGUST 2023 Aligning Safety with Service Delivery To fully integrate safety into operations and align it with service delivery we are changing our approach to risk assessment and method statements Generic risk assessments are being replaced with activity based work instructions that incorporate safety hazard identification and relevant control measures Operational managers will collaborate with frontline teams to create efficient and safe work procedures emphasising that people are the solution to harness not the problem to control Our proactive and people centric approach to safety management is a promising step toward achieving safer and more efficient operations By removing unnecessary bureaucracy and actively engaging with frontline workers we aim to create a culture where safety is an integral part of everyday tasks leading to a safer and more productive work environment for all BIDVEST NOONAN 9

12 PERSPECTIVE AUGUST 2023 Jennifer Littlewood Facilities Solution Director Meet Jennifer Littlewood Managing Director for Facilities Solution Welcome to our exclusive interview with our Managing Director Facilities Solution Business Unit Jennifer Littlewood With nearly two decades of experience and a passion for people Jennifer has had a diverse career starting in finance and moving into operations and facilities services In our interview with Jennifer we found out that sometimes the most fulfilling career journeys come from embracing unexpected opportunities Beyond her impressive career achievements Jennifer has a life outside of work that revolves around her family she s married with two kids and two adorable dogs In this interview we ll dive into Jennifer s journey exploring her motivations career transitions and the path that led her to where she is today Q What motivated your decision to transition from finance A I took some time outside of my finance role and discovered a genuine passion for working with people rolling up my sleeves and engaging with clients and suppliers It was at this moment that I became intrigued by everything related to client and contract management Q When did you join Bidvest Noonan and what led to your decision to join the company Q How did you start your professional journey A My journey began as an accountant and I initially planned to follow the finance route throughout my career As an accountant I planned to follow the traditional path aiming to become a CFO and make my mark in the financial world However I cannot be more grateful for where I am today Q Could you give us an overview of your career path A Of course I started in the field of finance and eventually became a finance director at BT Group However life had different plans for me when I had the opportunity to manage an operational team This pivotal decision marked a significant turning point in my career After my tenure at BT Group I embarked on a dynamic career journey that allowed me to gain invaluable experience across several organisations Among these were Openreach Balfour Beatty and CBRE where I held leading roles encompassing various aspects of the business landscape These roles encompassed a wide range of responsibilities including client management operational oversight business development financial management and contract management A I became a part of the Bidvest Noonan family in March 2022 and the company s people first approach and strong credo were the driving forces behind my decision to join Throughout my interactions with the company every conversation revolved around prioritising people above all else and that resonated deeply with me Beyond the corporate aspects I also admired the company s dedication to making a positive impact on the community and the environment Bidvest Noonan actively participated in various social responsibility initiatives demonstrating a genuine commitment to giving back to society Jennifer Littlewood s career journey is a testament to the power of being open to new experiences and passions In daring to take an unconventional path she found fulfillment and success beyond her expectations As she continues to lead with compassion and a people centric approach she serves as an inspiration to others reminding us that sometimes the most remarkable achievements are born from unexpected turns BIDVEST NOONAN 13
