This local production will run for two nights at the His-toric Anthony Theatre — September 22nd and 23rd, 2023 at 7 pm. The creative team includes Director Ali-son White and Stage Man-ager Ami DeLacerda. Leon The BU Chapter of the PEO Sisterhood of Anthony, Kansas, celebrated their 100th anniversary on Sat-urday, July 15 at the United Methodist Church Fellow-ship Hall. A brunch was served followed by an ad-dress from past state presi-dent Ginger Goering from Medicine Lodge. The morn-ing was concluded with a “Quiz Bowl” game with clues about PEO and the history of Anthony.The PEO Sisterhood was founded on January 21, 1869. Our com-munity also receives sup-port & partnership from the American Red Cross. Volunteers carry out 90% of the humanitarian work of the Red Cross. Whether helping one displaced fam-ily or thousands, providing care & comfort to an ill or injured service member or veteran, or teaching others how to respond in emergen-cies, it’s through the efforts of ordinary people that the Red Cross can do extraordi-nary things. The Red Cross responds to an emergency every 8 minutes. 190 times a day, Red Cross workers help a family affected by a home fire or other disas-ter. Volunteers are urgently needed in our community. Roles to consider:• Blood Drives & Blood Delivery: help staff the registration desk, monitor snack area, deliver blood to the processing center & community hospitals.• Disaster Preparedness & Response: help families & communities prepare for emergencies from home fires to natural disasters before they happen. Anthony Library Wraps Up Summer Reading ProgramBy Laura CormackLibrary Staff MemberActivity at the Anthony Public Library during this summer was phenomenal as youths of all ages from babies to pre-teens partici-pated in the Summer Read-ing Program, ‘All Together Now.’ This summer, Karen Younce began a summer reading weekly program just for babies to three years of age. This program was a success as 10 little ones and their accompanying adult spent 30 minutes reading books, learning rhymes and playing. Parents were en-couraged to read to their babies and the number of books read were tabulated for prizes. Those winning prizes for the most books read were: First Place, Ma-son Walschmidt, 2, with 70 books; Second Place, Rowan Fye, 2, with 62 books; Third Place, Hazel Calvert, 1, with 44 books. The 4-5 year old chil-dren who attended their weekly program also com-peted for prizes in their age group. First Place, Jemma Rowlett, 5, with 93 books; Adalyn Waldschmidt, 4, with 71 books; and Kolsen Rathgeber, 4, with 50 books.The final group were the school-aged youths from 6 -12 years of age. This group was the most active with a weekly program called Kids Adventure Club meet-ing every Wednesday after-noon for an hour to listen to a book reading and play games. The 4-H Coun-cil also requests entries from the general public for the cover of the fair book as well as the fair button.The winner this year for both categories was Krys-ten Shepherd of the Argo-nia Hilltoppers 4-H Club. She is the eleven year old daughter of Matt & Emily Shepherd.Krysten Shepherd Wins Fair Book Cover And Button ContestBank of the Plains spon-sored the fifty-dollar prize for the fair book cover win-ner each year. This year the Burke Bringer Memorial sponsored the fifty-dollar prize for the button. Fair books are free and buttons are two dollars each. They can be found at local banks and other busi-nesses in Harper, Anthony, and Attica. The button is good for the free lunch on Thursday, August 10th in Downtown Harper under the tent. Before the kids go back to school, it is a chance for one last bit of Family Fun at the Harper County Fair! The Harper County Fair Board have been busy preparing for the fair. Along with various projects, the Harper Coun-ty 4-H Council planned and organized a remodel for the North Room in the Fair Barn. It looks amazing, so be sure and check it out! Welcome To The 2023 Harper County Fair Again, this year we have approximately 30 booths! These booths showcase lo-cal vendors, business, and organizations. Along with the commercial booths, the Fair Board encourages lo-cal residents to enter and exhibit a project into the fair. There are so many possibilities!!! Grab a fair book and check out all of the options! There is still time to enter a project!Outside the Blue Barn, the livestock barns are overflowing again this year. All of the livestock numbers are up, so be sure and visit the barns as well as attend the livestock shows. Please check the fair books to see the schedule of events. The 4-H and FFA kids truly do love to see people in the stands watching them show off all of their hard work. In the Downtown Park (by the stage) there will be lots of food choices, so be sure and check them out. Also at the Downtown Park, the Queen and King will be announced, as well as a Fashion Revue, danc-ers, and musical produc-tions to entertain. Check out the daily schedule to find out more.Of course, a very popu-lar event is the Carnival. This year the Fair Board has contracted again with Moore Greater Shows. The Carnival will be open Thursday (6-10 pm), Friday & Saturday evenings. (6-11 p.m.) This year there will not be a Fair Board Brace-let Night BUT the carnival will have their own wrist-band specials EACH night, so be sure and check that out!For entertainment this year, be sure and attend the live music at the Farm Bureau Stage in downtown Harper. While enjoying the live music, be sure and visit the great vendors that are set up in the park.To finish off the week-end is the Grand Parade. The parade has become a family tradition, with gen-erations of family members meeting at the same spot each year to enjoy the pa-rade. The Grand Marshals leading the parade this year are James & Becky Coleman. The Coleman’s have been very involved in Harper County 4-H for many years and are al-ways seen throughout the fair supporting all the kids. The Fair Board is proud to have them lead the parade this year. Be sure and find a great spot along the Pa-rade Route to watch the Grand Parade on Saturday evening.There is really some-thing for everyone at the Harper County Fair! But for a few short, hot days, the fair offers a little bit of everything for everyone be-tween the midway and mut-ton busting.I’m still confident (arro-gant) enough in my athletic ability (rapidly deteriorat-ing) that I know with enough practice (cash) I could beat the carnival games and win a (pity) prize. I’m also ma-ture (old) enough to know I’d rather save my money for the assortment of fried foods (because calories and cholesterol don’t count at the fair).We usually skip the en-tertainment tent, finding the aforementioned mutton busting and the pedal pull more amusing. Plus, there’s no shortage of other projects to take in, from walking past the stalls of the livestock barn to seeking the refuge of air conditioning in the exhi-bition hall to look at all the entries there.The fried food and sug-ary treats are especially tasty after viewing the su-persized produce entered in the garden category. Joking aside, I’m always impressed with the variety of projects 4-Hers enter at the fair, many of which take a lot of time and effort that’s often unseen in the final product. 4-H members also have a chance to have photos at their local fair featured in a future edition of “Kansas Living” by submitting. Pic-tures must be submitted by Oct. 1 at www.kfb.org/Article/4H-and-KFB-Photo-Contest.It’s also easy to forget the fair isn’t simply showing off the end result after months of planning and labor. Ex-hibition also requires cour-age and self-confidence to compare one’s work against others in front of a judge. In many ways, the county fair is a laboratory of everyday life.Participants have to weigh their responsibilities against the rampant temp-tations of rides, food, friends and games. Impulse control is also helped by the auc-tions, and associated pre-miums, held the final night. There’s just less time for the money to burn holes in a pocket. Class champions also must decide between going to auction or advanc-ing their project to the state fair.However, it all turns out, there’s always lifelong memories made. Time will heal the hurt of finishing as the reserve champion, and it generally happens quickly since there’s plenty of friends and acquaintanc-es around who haven’t been seen since school ended in May.Perhaps the greatest lesson is that sometimes indulging in excess is OK. Like consuming way too many calories. It’s perfectly reasonable to have an un-balanced meal consisting of a corndog and a funnel cake. Or finally having the cour-age to tackle the scary ride this year. Or maybe risking a shoulder injury to win a teddy bear.Afterall, it’s just once a year the carnival lights brighten the night sky at the county fair. There’s no real world need to bust mut-ton, but it’s the best part of any rodeo. And those pedal pullers will soon graduate to more powerful machines. Robb’s vehicle entered the east ditch and overturned. Dana shared stories and pre-sented quilts that had been made by her grandmother, aunts, herself and others. She also inspired the group by sharing a number of bags and totes that she had made through the years. She had recently given a class at the Raccoon Quilt Company Shop in Harper on how to make a five piece bag called the Clam. Each bag nested inside the next for nice storage and trans-portation. She plans to give more classes in the future there at the Quilt Shop. Some of the quilt highlights were a painted and hand quilted bright yellow cre-ation which was the first quilt that was added to her collection; her grandmoth-er’s signature quilt; the very first custom quilt com-pleted by Dana; a memory quilt made from her dad’s overalls and hankies; and several antique quilts. The bags presented were quite diverse with BIG ones all the way down to very small coin purses. The group were very inspired and are lucky to now have Dana as a member of the KQQG group. Lanie1942 ~ 2023Larry J. Lanie, 80, of San An-tonio, Texas, passed away peace-fully on July 26, 2023 surrounded by his loving family.Larry was born on December 13, 1942 to Paul and Bessie Lanie in Hawthorne, California. At the end of World War II, they moved to Manchester, Oklahoma where Lar-ry grew up on the family farm. After graduating Salutatorian (the family always teased him because it was a class of ve!) from Manchester High School in 1960, he went on to study at three different universities. His college career began at St. Gregory’s University in Shawnee, Oklahoma. He then transferred to Georgetown University in Wash-ington D.C., studying Econom-ics. After a year at Georgetown, he moved back to Oklahoma and completed his undergraduate de-gree and graduate coursework for a Master’s in Economics at Okla-homa State University in 1966.After graduation, he landed his rst job as a Professor of Econom-ics at Southwestern College in Wineld, Kansas. At the time, he had no plans to become a banker. However, his experience at South-western provided an excellent foundation for his banking career as he was the only Econ professor teaching The Money and Banking course combined with Monetary Theory and Micro and Macro Eco-nomics. Larry’s banking career began in June 1967 when he went to work for The First National Bank in An-thony, Kansas where his main fo-cus was the Teller Line and back-ofce operations. He often spoke of how technology was virtually unknown at the small community bank. Interest was calculated by using an adding machine and led-ger entries were made by hand. It’s hard to imagine Larry not being armed with a computer, a spread-sheet, and all the latest technology, but he did it and was very success-ful. He left First National Bank in 1970 and joined Union State Bank in Clay Center, Kansas as a Vice President and Loan Ofcer. Larry said that he had to endure too much K-State purple in Clay Cen-ter and wanted to be closer to his orange and black Cowboys, so he began looking for a banking posi-tion in Oklahoma. In 1973, Larry moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma to join Guaranty National Bank. He start-ed off as a Commercial Loan Of-cer and rose through the ranks to become the President and CEO in 1977 at the age of 35.In 1983, a recruiter contacted Larry to be the rst President & CEO of USAA Bank. Larry accept-ed the position as he was up to the challenge of starting up a bank for a military-based insurance com-pany (despite not having a military background). He spent countless hours working on the Bank Char-ter, the facility, day-to-day banking operations, forecasting nancial growth, and hiring the rst bank employees. The bank opened on December 30, 1983 - that was one of the proudest moments in his career. He played a critical role in USAA’s history as the rst bank President and CEO. The enter-prise would not be what it is today without his contributions.After being persistent for a few months, the love of his life, Vicki Howard, nally accepted his invi-tation to go on a date. They mar-ried in 1984 and shared nearly 40 years of wonderful memories including their many trips in the U.S. and abroad with family and friends. Through their travels, they developed a love for ne arts and wine. You could also nd him en-joying a San Antonio Spurs basket-ball game, a UTSA football game, or of course any type of game or function for his beloved Oklahoma State Cowboys.After leaving USAA, Larry was approached by another military organization, Armed Forces Ben-et Association, to start up a bank based upon the direct banking model. After their banking opera-tion was developed, he went out on his own in 1991 and formed BUSA Financial Services, a bank management and consulting rm. Located in San Antonio, Texas, BUSA’s clients included American Automobile Association, American Dental Association and Farm Bu-reau Federation. This eventually led to the start-up of Farm Bureau Bank whose Federal Savings Bank charter application was approved in 1999. He served as the CEO of both FB BanCorp and Farm Bu-reau Bank the entire time and re-tired in March of 2012.When Larry wasn’t working, he could be found on the soccer eld cheering on Brooke and Whitney. He was a very “spirited” fan (and was often thrown out of games), so he took up photography and began photographing the games from the sidelines. This helped to keep his zealousness in check! He truly loved his soccer family, and they remained dear friends to him throughout his life.Having a passion for banking, Larry never truly retired. After his “ofcial retirement” from Farm Bu-reau Bank, he continued to serve as a board member for different banks. In 2022, Larry came out of retirement to serve as interim Pres-ident for Banc Central in Oklaho-ma. The Bank was near the family farm, allowing him the opportunity to spend some extra quality time with a few of his siblings. One of the rst things people remember about Larry was his friendly demeanor. He was a bril-liant and captivating storyteller. He was always happy to strike up a conversation and let you know one of his many stories. Larry had no greater pleasure than gathering friends and family for ne food, wine, and camaraderie. One of his favorite social gatherings was hosting a Super Bowl party every year. Nothing compared to the love he had for his family. He was de-voted to his wife, Vicki, ve daugh-ters and nine grandchildren. He was a wonderful husband, father, teacher, and friend. He instilled his work ethic in each of us. He supported us all through the many accomplishments and difculties in our lives and he will be greatly missed. Larry truly put others rst: he had a servant’s heart, and we are all better people for having known him. His spirit and zest for life will never be forgotten. May God keep and bless him until the day we meet again.Larry was predeceased by his paternal grandparents-William Mi-chael and Dulcine Marie Lanie-, his maternal grandparents-James and Emily Burlie-, his parents-Paul and Bessie Lanie-, his sister-Nan-cy Horwitz-, and son-in-law-David Lancaster.Larry is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 40 years, Vicki Lanie. His ve daughters, Kammy Lan-caster, Kerry Lanie, Kelsey Barron (Erik), Brooke Moreno (Aaron), and Whitney Warlick (Jonathan); grandchildren Brent Lancaster (Se-gan), Brittany Lancaster, Madison Azar, Isabella Azar, Brendan Azar, Nathalie Azar, Samuel Moreno, Ol-iver Warlick, and Lanie Warlick; his siblings Christine McDonald (Jim), Randy Lanie (Kathy), Mike Lanie (Jan), Debbie Lechtenberg (John) and Dan Horwitz; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. Although she is retired, she is still busy doing what she loves, helping on the family farm, attending grandkid’s ac-tivities, gardening, spend-ing time with friends, and playing slot machines at the casino.As active members of the Argonia Lutheran Church, James can be heard auc-tioning off quilts at the annual Lutheran German Festival. Becky is a great supporter of this event and has purchased several of the beautiful quilts made by the Lutheran women. They both can be found pre-paring the sauerkraut in the crock and other items for this event. Being community mind-ed, they can also be found helping at the Avenue of Flags at the Argonia Cem-etery, placing and folding the Flags. James is a vet-eran of the U.S. Army and received a Veterans Quilt of Valor. He also helps auc-tioneer at the Argonia All School Reunions.James and Becky are great supporters of the Harper County Fair. Whether it is watching live-stock shows, participating in open class events or sup-porting the livestock auc-tion, they will be at the fair to support the youth. James was an active member of the 20th MaladayPushers 4-H where he participated in poultry, gardening, and beef. Both of their chil-dren were members of the Hilltoppers 4-H Club of which Becky was a leader for many years. Their six grandchildren were also members of the Argonia Hilltoppers 4-H Club.
