Can you believe it’s already August? With back-to-school season upon us, kids may be groaningwhile parents are cheering! But August also marks the return of our much-anticipated “Bowlingfor Scholars” Tournament. This event is vital for our Scholarship Fund, which has awarded$100,000 to local North County High School Seniors thanks to the visionary Don Zykan, whostarted this initiative in 1993. We’re honored to carry on his legacy.Don Zykan was a cornerstone of the Greater North County Chamber, Florissant, and NorthCounty communities. His dedication made our community a better place, and he will be deeplymissed. Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers during this time.In honor of Don, we invite you to our Blood Drive on Thursday, August 15th, at the James J.Eagan Center from 10 am to 2 pm. Even if slots are full, you can still donate! All donors willreceive a commemorative t-shirt and goodie bag. If you can't make it that day, you can donate atany ImpactLife Center that week by mentioning you're donating in Don Zykan’s honor.Ladies, mark your calendars for our 11th Annual Women’s Empowerment Seminar on Friday,September 27th! The theme is “Love Yourself,” presented by North County, Inc., One WayRoofing, and SSM Health DePaul Hospital-St. Louis. Our keynote speaker is Saint Louis CountyCouncilwoman Shalonda Webb. Chair LetterScott PalermoA Skeetz ProductionPage 4ScottHi There,I was sad to hear of the passing of Don Zykan. I did not run into him often but when I did he always treated melike a friend. I mostly knew of Don through the GNCC, where he was instrumental in establishing thescholarship program which has awarded over $100,000 to area students but he also made a huge impact withhis involvement with many other causes in the Florissant and North County Communities. We will miss himvery much. When growing up, I always thought North County was the best community ever to live in. Neighbors took careof each other; you were mostly welcomed wherever you went and there was always something going on whereothers were gathered. I probably would have found myself in a lot more trouble if I wasn’t convinced thatthere was nowhere I could go without somebody being there that knew my parents—a tactic that I have nowused on my own kids. I still believe that NoCo is a great community but things have changed since I was younger—maybe not asmuch about the community has changed but rather more of what a community is now. So much of ourcommunities is virtual and although it is great to be able to keep up what is happening with old friends, thereis something weird about having 1,299 Facebook “Friends” and not being able to remember the last time youwent out to grab a beer with any of them.I was invited to my 40th class reunion a couple of months ago and really didn’t want to go through the hassleof going but something inside of me told me that I needed to be there. It ended up being pretty cool and therewas two things that I realized from the experience: 1) I graduated with a whole bunch of old people and 2)there was a great connection that I had with so many of these old folks—shared experiences and the resultingmemories made us a community again and for a few hours that evening we connected like you did beforesocial media and smart phones. Our community will be challenged in the coming months as elections in the divisive world that we live in willpit one neighbor against another. Gone are the days when we can have discussions with people with differingopinions without things getting heated when we all sincerely want the best for the communities that we livein but have different ideas of the best way to make then that way. The thing that makes North County a grandplace to live in is that there are a great number of people that believe that and are working very hard to cometogether and make it an even better place to live and work and play together. After all is said and done, we probably won’t be remembered as much for our own accomplishments as we willbe remembered for our impact to others in our community that we have left behind. I encourage anyone thatis actually reading this to remember that as you go about your day… and to choose to go to your reunion…Keep it REAL,
