BulletinJuly 2020• 5Dear ReadersTwo things to tell you, as we graduallycome out of hibernation. The first thing to say,we are now back in printed form, so I do hope youare now returning back to a more structured way ofworking and reading this in the tea room! The second thing, something you will have alreadynoticed – the July edition of the Bulletin is muchsmaller than usual. There are a couple of reasons forthis, obviously while we have been in lockdown, wehave not been attending any conferences, meetings, seminars orworkshops in person, these have all been postponed or pushed intovirtual meetings. Most of which have been done at very short notice – socurrently there is nothing much to report. Additionally, because of theunscheduled changes to our lives, the Bulletin has begun to get verybehind in our print schedule, which we now need to get back as wereturn to printed format. Our August edition will also be small – but Iguarantee our September edition will be back to normal!Back with this edition, we do have some articles of interest to you – let’sstart with MySociety – the IAT membership database. Read pages 8-11 foran explanation of how this works and how you can use it. This is ofinterest to us all, but especially so to those of us who are RAnTechs – wecan use the database to track and keep records of our CPD.Elsewhere, we have AS-ET news, which includes information on the essaycompetition – prize a trip to Congress 2021. See page 16 to see if you areeligible – even if you are not, please pass the information on to thosewho are.Make sure you take care and …Keep Reading!CarolePoverty IAT LAUNCHES EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY GenderRaceSexual OrientationDiscriminationAgeReligion or BeliefDisabilityEthnicityFairAnti-oppres sive practiceFairYout h WorkSexValuesEmpowermentLegislationDifferenc eSocietyEqualRightsStatusOpportunitiesClassBeliefsEducationNOBODY IS THE SAME BUT EVERYONE IS EQUALInstitute of Animal TechnologyAdvancing and promoting excellence in the care and welfare of animals in scienceEnsuring policies, procedures and processes don’t discriminateEducation - equal access to opportunitiesCreating an inclusive culture for allwww.iat.org.uk/equalityGROUPJul20:IATB NEW 10/7/20 10:01 Page 5August 2023• 5BulletinKeep Reading!Carole Firstly, I want to say a huge congratulationsto Caroline Chadwick on being awarded a British Empire Medal for her services to humane animal research. Very well deserved and I am sure that all members of the IAT would agree (see page 9).Secondly, I want to draw everyone’s attention to page 25, these are bursaries available for people who have made a 3Rs advancement and given to present that work at the LASA Conference. I strongly recommend that anyone who has made such an advance, submit an abstract. Animal Technicians and Technologists spend lots of time with animals and have, in the past had very strong involvement with 3Rs work and it would be good to hear more from them. Read the page very carefully and if you have made a 3Rs advancement, then submit before 31st August. The LASA Conference (details in diary dates on page 27) is all about communicating ideas and another way to do that is to write papers – as you are aware the IAT has its own journal – Animal Technology and Welfare (ATW). In the minutes of the Branch Liaison Contacts meeting (page 7 – 8), they discuss how to raise the pro le of the Journal. One goodway we can all do that is to write articles for it. Think about what you do at work, how can it be improved, what might need to be changed, how can you make that change. If you have made it – then write about in ATW.Finally, it is August – holiday time! Marc Wiltshire took some great photos of otters on his last holiday and I have written a small piece to accompany it, ironically while I was on holiday – see pages 12 – 17. When I researched the article, I was reminded of how beautiful Scotland is and when I read about the wildlife, the Isle of Skye went straight on my bucket list of places to visit! BulletinAugust 2023 • 7 Branch Liaison Committee ReportThe meeting in May for the Branch Liaison Committee (BLC) was face to face at a new venue in London, the Civil Service Club, Great Scotland Yard. It was a great day for the BLC to meet, the sun was shining ‘the weather was sweet’. I was travelling from Manchester and the journey was quick albeit I went to the wrong station at first. It was a good job I left with loads of time to arrive. The new venue was really nice and unlike The Farmers Club, our usual meeting place, there wasn’t a formal dress code so, very casual attire it was! On arrival we were met with sandwiches and hot and cold drinks. The sandwiches were much needed and very tasty. It was nice to see some familiar faces I had not seen in a while and with some new faces too. We started with introductions around the table and some via video calls. When introducing yourself in these kinds of situations, does anyone else keep saying their introduction in their head over and over so they do not get it wrong? I was previously part of another Branch and very nearly said that Branch! There were some words of advice, from around the table – never look Kally in the eye or you are volunteering for whatever is being asked! I can confirm this is true and will bring sunglasses to wear to the next meeting! Everyone at the meeting, who had attended Congress agreed it was great! It was thought the trade stands were very good and the IAT Branch quiz well received. There were some suggestions on how to evolve this quiz for the future, so keep an eye out next year. The Branch raffle raised a great amount of money, £1,331 at the event, which Council kindly rounded up to £1,500. A massive thank you to Theresa, from the Cambridge Branch, for organising and running the raffle and a thank you to everyone for supplying prizes. There was a lot of communication around the table about how to get more people involved in the IAT Branches, as most did experience some attendance issues for events. The exception to this appears to be Cambridge Branch which
Bulletin8 • August 2023 seems to always have a good turnout, so maybe they should be the blueprint for the rest of us.There was a reminder that email sign offs are on the IAT website for Member of the Institute of Animal Technology (MIAT), Fellow of the Institute of Animal Technology (FIAT) and Registered Animal Technician (RAnTech). We discussed the idea ‘what have you done to make a difference?’ the group hopes to encourage technicians to share ideas no matter how small you think they are, as these changes could make a massive difference to someone else. The group is looking to organise a branch competition to get ideas shared. After the meeting we went for a few drinks, in which cut-off jeans around the ankles seemed to be a big talking point! After a couple of drinks, we were all good friends, reminiscing about things in the past and talking about the future of Animal Technology.I am looking forward to seeing everyone again soon for a catch up and progress on different actions raised during the meeting.Reporter: Sam WorboyAnimal Technologists – professional empathetic steadfastCALL FOR POSTERSCongress2024CONGRESS Invitation to Participate12th March – 15th Marchl take an active part in the leading annual meeting for Animal Technologistsl submit a poster – final date Friday 2nd February 2024*l consider giving an oral presentation of your poster as part of the main scientific programme, it could also be accepted within the first time presenter’s category – closing date Friday 8th December 2023*l send your ideas today on the Submission form available from www.iat.org.uk (*posters will not be accepted for display at Congress unless they have been properly submitted and approved by the Congress Committee)l two best posters will receive a prize based on the criteria: animal welfare / scientific contentl plus claim up to 10 CPD points – details given on acceptance of submissionContact: congress@iat.org.uk

Bulletin12 • April 2023 Bulletin12• April 2023 The Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) was lost in most regions of England and Wales between the 1950s and 1970s, because of pollution in the waterways. Although cleaning the rivers meant a comeback in many areas – their stronghold remains Scotland. The Scottish population is estimated to be around 8,000. Otters in Scotlandto be around 8,000.
BulletinAugust 2023 • 13They are one of the UK’s top predators, feeding mainly on fi sh, waterbirds, amphibians and crustaceans, eating approximately 1 – 1.5 Kg daily. A high percentage (approximately 50%) of the Scottish population feed exclusively in the sea, while the rest feed in lochs and rivers. They are one of the UK’s top predators, feeding mainly on fi sh, waterbirds,
Bulletin14 • August 2023
BulletinAugust 2023 • 15Otters are related to badgers, pine martens, stoats, weasels and mink with whom they are often confused but can be distinguished from by their larger, more powerful bodies (they are the size of small dogs), paler grey-brown fur, broader snout and broader, pale chest and throat. The water suits otters well, as they have webbed feet, dense fur to keep them warm and the ability to close both their ears and nose when underwater.
Bulletin16 • August 2023 They are highly nocturnal, with large home ranges – about 32km for a male and 20km for a female. They live below ground in holts – which may be a burrow, natural hole, cave or even a man-made structure, which is where they have their young. They may also rest above ground in structures known as couches. In the UK, they may breed all year round. In Scotland, their biggest cause of death is related to human activity – road traffi c accidents, and the Government agency, NatureScot works closely with road engineers and developers to carry out mitigation measures to prevent this. Commercial eel fi shing and creeling are also threats. For more information on otters see – NatureScot, https://www.nature.scot/plants-animals-and-fungi/mammals/land-mammals/otterOtters can be seen all year round – dawn and dusk are the best times for spotting them in fresh water areas but in coastal areas, they can often be seen all day – as food is plentiful. You will need to be quiet, as they are easily disturbed. If you want to go otter spotting, then Forestry and Land Scotland have some excellent suggestions, as well as more otter facts – https://forestryandland.gov.scot/learn/wildlife/otter . Places on the West coast of Scotland and the islands, include Kylerhea Otter Hide on the Isle of Skye, where you might also spot grey and common seals, sea birds and dolphins! Or in the summer, Garbh Eilean wildlife hide on the shores of Loch Sunart – where you may also see ospreys and sea eagles fi shing – which I imagine to be a magnifi cent sight. Marc took these images from a boathouse on Loch Connell.
BulletinAugust 2023 • 17If you want to consider helping otters – Scottish Wild Life Trust allows you to adopt an otter, with their Adopt an Otter scheme:- https://scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/product/adoptions/?attribute_animal=OtterAs well as having more general otter information on their webpage – https://scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/species/otter/Finally, can I recommend a novel to you? Tarka the Otter His Joyful Water-Life and Death in the Country of the Two Rivers is a 1927 novel by English writer Henry Williamson. It is a great novel, darker perhaps than we are used to reading nowadays. Images provided by Marc WiltshireArticle written by Carole Wilson

Mental Health AwarenessLet’s Talk about ... Mental Healthwww.iat.org.ukInstitute of Animal TechnologyCOUNCILEDI GroupEquity, Diversity and InclusionIt’s OK … NOT TO BE OKAY …Let’s Talk about ... Mental HealthManaging Mental Health at work is important for employers and employeesAccording to the Mental Health Foundation, one in six employees experience mental ill health each year. The impact of the pandemic, the increasing cost of living and changes to working practices mean that it is now more important than ever, to put workplace mental health at the top of workplace agendas. Mental health problems can happen suddenly, because of a specific event in someone’s life, or it can build up gradually over time. There are many types of mental health conditions, for example:l Depressionl Anxiety l Bipolar disorder l SchizophreniaStress is not classed as a medical condition. but it can still be serious and, cause or make worse, other mental health conditions. For example, if you have stress over a long time, this might lead to anxiety or depression.Spotting possible signs of a mental health problem:Not everyone will show obvious signs of poor mental health and it’s important not to make assumptions. But some possible signs at work include:l appearing tired, anxious or withdrawnl increase in sickness absence or being late to workl changes in the standard of a person’s work or focus on tasksl being less interested in tasks they previously enjoyedl changes in usual behaviour, mood or how the person behaves with the people they work withIt can be harder to spot these signs if employees are working from home. It is important for employers to regularly ask their employees how they are doing. They should help them to be open and honest about how they are feeling.Looking after your own mental healthIt is important to look after your mental health at work, ways to support your own mental health are:l Stay in contact with people – talk to people you work with or friends about how you are feeling. Talk to others in your facility, Mental Health First Aiders, Occupational Health, Your Manager.l Have a routine so you plan in advance what you’ll be doing each day.l Keep active and exercise.l Make time for activities you enjoy.l Reflect on what helps you feel more positive and what does not.Looking after Employees’ Mental HealthThe sooner an employer becomes aware of a mental health problem, the sooner they can provide help and support.Whilst many of the reasons behind poor mental health will not be work-related, evidence shows that employers who, reduce stigma, improve management capability and increase self-support, markedly help their employees to remain productive and stay in work. What can I do as a manager?l Be open in facilities about Mental Health awareness.l Talk regularly with individuals and teams.l Address workload issues and add additional rest breaks if required.l Organise and promote positive social events e.g. cake in the tearoom, walks at lunchtime.l Recognise signs of mental ill health and take advice on how to support staff members, this may be from HR, Occupational Health, organisational support networks or Mental Health First Aiders (MHFA) in the Organisation.References and for further support and informationhttps://www.acas.org.uk/supporting-mental-health-workplacehttps://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/explore-mental-health/a-z-topics/online-mental-health-supporthttps://www.rethink.org/help-in-your-area/support-groups/

Skin swabbing: refining genotyping of small-bodied fishes The NC3Rs has collaborated with experts to create a resource aimed at researchers and technicians who want to learn more about the practical and welfare aspects of switching from fin clipping to skin swabbing. The resource includes: ▪ Commonly asked questions answered in detail by experts in skin swabbing and laboratory fish welfare. ▪ A table comparing the practical aspects of fin clipping and skin swabbing. ▪ A skin swabbing protocol, peer-reviewed literature, and videos to help you develop and implement a swabbing protocol in your own facility. ▪ Advice on refining genotyping procedures if you facility is not yet ready to make the switch to skin swabbing. www.nc3rs.org.uk/fishswabbing Minimising aggression in group-housed mice The NC3Rs has created a new resource providing recommendations for preventing and managing aggression between group-housed mice. The recommendations focus on male mice and are based on published literature. Sources include the NC3Rs mouse aggression study, which analysed data from 137,580 male mice that was collected by animal technicians across 44 facilities. The resource also includes general information that can be applied to both sexes, such as guidance on understanding sudden behavioural changes and monitoring aggression in mice. www.nc3rs.org.uk/mouse-aggression
