We then decided to encourage them to come as a group on one day so that we could arrange something a little more special. These meetings were very popular, and seeing that we had outgrown our venue, Scott Brown, a friend who owns the car sales/garage workshop in the village, suggested that we move our meetings there! This was a tremendous success, and car enthusiasts drove from as far away as Edinburgh and Newcastle to join us in the Scottish Borders. The event attracted some stunning Jaguars, from Mk 2 through to F-TYPE, but actually it was the Ford Mustangs that stole the show! Our guest of honour was former racing driver Doug Niven, cousin of F1 World Champion Jim Clark. Jim Clark started his racing career in a D-type with the Border Reivers, based at Chirnside, just along the road and there is now a museum in Duns dedicated to Jim Clark.A week later, on Drive it Day, I took Brucie to Belford Show in Northumberland, where he was photographed with the show organiser (Peter Mailer) and Sarah Crabtree, of Bangers and Cash TV fame! With the continuation of our ‘MoT season’ several of our Jaguars came out of their winter slumber for servicing and testing as we look forward to what will hopefully be a full complement of shows this year. The focus will be on Brucie, as he celebrates his 25th year, with trips planned to the CAugust, to name but a few, so look out for Brucie and if you see us, please come and say hello! n MotoringWebsites

LOOKINGBACKXclusively Jaguar Patron, Howard Hunt, shares a few ofhis memories from a long career at JaguarWords by Howard HuntPictures courtesy of Howard HuntEncounter with SirWilliam Lyons 1964Returning to Browns Lane with an EType convertible, having completed itsrst road test, I was behind scheduleand came round the corner at the endof the GEC block going somewhat fasterthan I should have been to nd SirWilliam Lyons and Sir Donald Stokescrossing the road to go up the concretesteps into the Experimental car park. Both had to move fairly smartly to avoida ride on the E Type nose. I returned toRoad Test and parked the car on therectication lines noting that my reartrade plate, which we mounted betweenthe over-riders, had spun round on myspeed run down the A45 so at least myplate number couldn’t have been taken.I hurried down to the opposite end ofthe shop and started setting the tyrepressures on my next car for test, expecting at any minute mysuperintendent Arthur Fisher to appearand call me in to the inner sanctum totell me my Jaguar career had come toan end, but nothing happened.About ve days later I was leaving thefactory with a Mk II when Sir William,on foot, agged me down and jumpedinto the front passenger seat and said“My oce, please.” This often happenedwhen his buzzer had gone o and hewas out somewhere in the factory. Idrove round the factory to the frontoces and parked in front of the largeglass doors. Sir William got out andthen leaned back into the car and said“When you come round that b****ycorner at the GEC block go b****yslower. Sir Donald nearly sprained hisankle jumping on to the grass bank.” Anarrow escape for me. If things hadgone badly it could have changed notonly my career but the course of halfthe British motor industry. Sir Williamalways had a bit of a soft spot for testdrivers. Norman Dewis, chiefexperimental test driver, got away withmurder on more than one occasion.National ExhibitionCentre Mishap 1982During the Motor Show at the NEC Iwas called upon by David Boole, ourPublic Relations Director, to take an XJSHE press car from our Browns Lanebase to the NEC, to be used in a photoshoot. The car was all ready, sittingwaiting in the shop, so I left BrownsLane in plenty of time for a gentle driveto the NEC. Joining the A45 via the sliproad I used the kick down to slot into agap in the stream of trac. Lifting othe throttle once on the A45 I foundmyself rmly stuck in second gear and Iknew straight away what the problemwas – a faulty K/D switch – I have toadmit a problem not unknown to us. Icould have made it to the exhibitioncentre in second gear but once thereDavid could well ask me to demonstratethe car to a visiting journalist or evenlet a journalist take it for a drive. Davidwas not one to miss a PR opportunity,so there was nothing for it but to returnto Browns Lane.By the time we had tted a new K/Dswitch I was on a deadline time wise tomake it to the photo shoot so it was ahigh speed run to the show. I managedto arrive just in time to nd Davidwaiting at the kerbside outside the mainconcourse so he could guide me up thekerb on to the paved area under theentrance canopy where the cameracrew were set up with a battery oflights along with a group ofphotographers. I parked as directed andgot out of the car. Almost immediately avery attractive young lady appeared, draped in a dressing gown. She walkedover to the car and cast o the gown toreveal a bikini that hadn’t broken thebank in material costs and before Davidand I could stop her sat down on thefront wing. Bearing in mind that one ofthe big problems in the development ofthe XJS was under bonnet overheating(hence the battery in the boot and theexpensive under bonnet cable to returnthe power to the front of the car) and Ihad just driven fairly rapidly from thefactory this was not a wise move as theunfortunate lady immediately found out, leaving the wing very rapidly with aloud scream. Thankfully it was the wingshe sat on and not the bonnet. Luckilythere was no serious harm donealthough there was a visible red patchon the model’s thigh which requiredcopious amounts of cream and talcbefore the photo shoot could go ahead. My oer to assist with the application ofthe aforementioned remedies wasrefused ……..

Cars and a LuxuryYacht 1988The press launch for the XJSConvertible took place at Juan les Pinson the Cote d’Azur, France. The hotelbeing used by Jaguar for the world’smotoring journalists did not have anyspace where we could erect atemporary workshop to maintain theeet during the launch. The hotel ownersuggested we look at the marina whichwas only 200 metres away down theroad, and this proved to be goodadvice. There was a small garage onthe marina which serviced the boatengines, and the owners’ cars whilethey were out at sea. The garageagreed to hire us one of their pits andan inspection ramp for the duration ofthe launch, plus an adjacent tarmacboat storage area. With the millionairesyachts moored in the harbour in front ofus and the blue Mediterranean andgolden sand beach to our right – nottoo bad a base to be working from. Theonly problem I foresaw was keeping myteam’s attention focused on our eet oflaunch cars rather than the bikini cladgures on the beach! My route for testing the cars wasdelightful, along the coast towardsAntibes, and I found a little parkoverlooking the Med where I could stopand do my walk round the car andunder-bonnet checks. Madonna wasstaying at the nearby Cap Hotel andused to pass with her bodyguard on hermorning jog and would give me a wave. One evening turning the cars roundafter the days running a nautical lookinggentleman came over to look at thecars. I showed him around and endedup giving him a short demo ride. Itturned out he was the captain of SirDonald Gosling’s (of National Car Parksfame) yacht, the Brave Goose. Thecaptain told me Sir Donald was yingdown that evening and he would beinterested to know if we were therewith the Jaguars as he was a greatenthusiast for all things British. The following morning the captainreturned with an invitation from SirDonald for the team to visit the BraveGoose, taking some of the cars with us.Sir Donald had suggested taking somephotos - the Best of British on Land andSea. We arrived at the yacht thatafternoon to nd the yacht bedeckedwith bunting for the occasion. Weparked the cars alongside and werewelcomed on board by the captain andtaken on a conducted tour of the stateof the art British built yacht, a beautiful, very technically advanced craft. One ofthe tech features was an on board plantthat turned sea water into drinkingwater so there was never any need totake the local water on board. Theyacht was always maintained ready tosail at two hours notice as far as theCaribbean non-stop. At the end of thetour we went to the saloon to meet SirDonald for drinks and canapes and herewe spent the most entertainingafternoon. Sir Donald proved to be avery easy man to engage with and theconversation owed around his longNavy career, creating National Car Parkson leaving the Service, boats and cars.A memorable afternoon on a luxuryyacht overlooking the Med with inspiringcompany – a day to be remembered.Tit for Tat 2001I was called at short notice toinvestigate the possibility of a suitabledriving route in the Austrian Alps for theworld press launch of the forthcoming XType. My wife Ann who occasionallyworked with me had anotherengagement so I recruited JohnAshcroft, one of my fellow test driversfrom my Test & Rectication days. Thisjob was going to involve some highspeed driving at altitude in the Alps andI knew John had the relevantexperience. Arriving at InnsbruckAirport we were met by representativesfrom Jaguar Austria who had broughtalong one of their executive’s personalDaimler which he had generouslyloaned us for the duration of the job.We had been working late one nighthigh in the mountains and werereturning to our hotel in the dark, Johndriving, when passing through a smallvillage (with all the wheelie bins out forcollection) we suddenly got a radarcamera ash but neither of us had seen
the speed camera. Leavingthe village a car coming inthe other direction alsoashed a camera. Westopped to have a look anddiscovered one of thewheelie bins was bolted tothe pavement and had acamera installed in it – howsneaky can you get? When we returned the car, having completed the work,we apologised and explainedwe had been caught by aradar trap saying John wouldown up as the driver and Iwould pay the ne. The execsaid not to worry, he wouldtake care of it. On my returnto the UK when I processedthe photos to submit with myreport I understood his lackof concern, and I think youwill too when you look at thephoto taken in themountains using a ash.In the footstepsof the Royals2005Jaguar Deutschland engagedme in the latter half of 2005to assist them with a pressevent they wanted to carryout to promote theforthcoming launch inGermany of the DaimlerSuper Eight aluminiumbodied L.W.B. S/C V8. Ten ofGermany’s top motoringjournalists were to y intoHeathrow Airport and, aftera presentation on the newDaimler, commence a twoday driving exercise tappinginto the British Royal family’suse of the Daimler marqueand driving some of theroutes they would havedriven. In 1900 Edward,Prince of Wales, (later KingEdward VII) owned aDaimler, cementing arelationship with the Royalfamily that would extend forover a century. The royalswere frequent visitors toWarwick Castle and some ofthe driving routes wouldreplicate drives made fromthere to stately homes in thearea and tours of the nearbyCotswolds.I duly completed all thedriving routes, timing plansetc. and on the afternoon of7th December 2005 I metwith the Jaguar DeutschlandPR team at the MarriottHotel at Heathrow to startthree very busy days. Therst task was to collect theve Daimlers to be used inthe operation from SidCreamer’s garage in DraysonMews, Kensington.Appropriately for the job wewere going to do the garagehad held for years two RoyalWarrants for the supply ofmotor vehicles. We were metby Michael Quinn, ManagingDirector of Creamers(grandson of Sir WilliamLyons) and fellow patron ofthis magazine. Michael hadoverseen the preparation ofthe cars and they weresitting in the Mews garagelooking immaculate, ready togo. In spite of some veryhard driving by thejournalists all ran faultlesslythroughout the exercise. At 5pm I led the convoy fromthe Mews into the usualLondon evening rush hour. Ithink it took me four or veminutes just to get out on toKensington High Street, separating the convoy almostimmediately. Sitting goingnowhere in the outer lane oftwo solid lines of trac therewas suddenly a wail of sirensand a mass of ashing bluelights. The inner line oftrac quickly pulled on tothe pavement and my line into the inner lane – they arevery good at this in thecapital. The blue lightsproved not to be emergencyvehicles but two RangeRovers, a Jaguar, then twomore Range Rovers. Irecognised the Jaguar as thePrince of Wales car, and itwas HRH and escorts ontheir way, I assumed, fromKensington Palace to hisHighgrove Estate inGloucestershire. After thelast blue light had passed methere was nothing in sight inmy mirrors so I pulled backin to the outer lane, the rstcar to do so. I immediatelycame to a set of trac lightswhich were on red. Amotorcycle policeman whosebike was blocking the otherside of the crossroads wavedme urgently across againstthe red light indicating that Ispeed up. I noted that hiscompanion was actuallystopping the inner lanetrac. The same thinghappened at the next set oftrac lights and I suddenlyrealised that being in a darkcoloured Daimler I was beingmistaken for the back-up carthat sometimes accompaniedthese convoys. I now foundmyself on the back of theblue light convoy proceedingthrough the London rushhour at 55 mph. We quicklyjoined the M4 and near theHeathrow junction Iwondered if I was going tocreate a security scare if Ileft the convoy. I droppedback a little from the rearRange Rover and eased in tothe centre lane and nothinghappened so I joined theinner lane and exited themotorway at the junction.I was on my second coeeand evening paper in theMarriott Hotel when theGerman PR team nallyjoined me. They berated mefor not telling them of the ratrun I knew to miss thetrac. I did not tell them our“driving in the footsteps ofroyals” had started early, putting my early arrival downto a lucky break in the trac.FootnotesOne of the Germanjournalists was WolfgangKonig, a man who alwaystested a car to the limits oftheir performance. He wasone of a small group ofjournalists invited in thestrictest condence to drivea pre-production XJ40 inearly 1986, the rst peopleoutside of Jaguar to drivethat car. I spent a pleasantafternoon driving in theCotswolds with him and wetalked mostly about the carbut also about what some ofthe attractive Cotswoldhouses we were passingwould cost him. The drivewas followed by a questionand answer session atBrowns Lane with Jim Randleand some of his engineers. In appreciation of mycontribution to the eventJaguar Deutschlandpresented me with a twovolume book in apresentation box “DaimlerDays” by Brian E Smith, acelebration of 100 years ofDaimler motor cars.

WHY?There are a number of reasons whymaking your instrument panel lightingand your warning lights brighter is agood idea. The obvious one is that itlooks so much better, making your carlook like it is in rude good health, ratherthan being below par. Another, moreimportant reason, is that the dierencein the time you will need to take youreyes away from what is happening infront of the car to check on fuel levelsetc. will be greatly reduced. For eachsecond you are looking at the dash, at35mph your car will travel more than 50feet. That’s a lot of potential foraccidents. Heat is anotherconsideration. Those original tiny dashlighting bulbs produce more heat thanlight, and many of the electricalproblems on older cars can be traced tothis with cracking insulation, brittleplastics or ceramics and discoloureddials. The new and bright LED bulbs willrun cool and cause none of theseproblems.HOW?The rst thing to do is to identify whatbulbs you need, and it is best not tobelieve what the car owners’ handbooktells you, if anything. This is becausehandbooks are produced prior to the carbeing produced and details change, butthere is never the budget in place topulp the handbooks and to start again. Also, a new wiring harness is likely tobring changes and so is half a centuryof fettling. If you cannot be sure how todescribe your bulbs, remove one andsend a photograph of it on a plainbackground to your favourite supplier, with a little information, like “2 of thesein the speedo, 6 elsewhere”. Conrmthe polarity of your car at the same time.COLOURMany people think that their car hasonly ever had warm white dash lighting. This was rarely the case from the post-war years onwards, as experiencegained with long-haul aircraft during thewar showed that coloured instrumentillumination not only avoided nightblindness, but also reduced fatigue.Until LEDs came along, the only colourof light that could be produced waswhite, of various shades. White is not acolour, but the amalgam of all visiblecolours, so a coloured lens was used toblock 6 of the 7 primary colours, to letjust the chosen one shine through. This What you need to knowabout upgrading yourdashboard lightingBy Gil Keane of Better Car LightingGil Keane, The 4Sight Lighting Co.T 0121 773 7000E W
is wasteful, and the trapped light, ifthere is enough of it, can turn thecoloured lens to a pastel shade. If youmatch the colour of the light to thecolour of the lens, you will get a betterresult every time. Also, the heat fromthe conventional bulbs is often enoughto “cook” coloured lters, which thenbecome opaque. When you canproduce light of the right colour, damaged lters can be discarded, andbetter and more even illumination canbe achieved.DIMMINGIf your instrument panel has a rotarydimmer, more correctly called arheostat, it won’t work with conventionalLED bulbs, as it is designed for loadsten times as high. Also, trying to dim thenew and bright LED bulbs with theoriginal dimmer can damage the newbulbs by supplying them with the wrongvoltage. The answer is to either use analternative dimmer designed to workwith LED bulbs, or to use the fullydimmable LED bulbs which have justbecome available for the traditionalEdison screw types. Cars with a two-position brightness switch can t asimple mod which will make it workcorrectly with LED bulbs.WARNING LIGHTSThe clue is in the name with these, andignoring warnings is not usually a wiseor sensible thing to do. The trouble withcar warning lights though, is that unlessyou happen to be looking at them whenthey come on, they may not be spottedfor some time. If the warning is relatedto a catastrophic loss of oil pressure orcoolant, delays can be very expensive. You can now get self-ashing LEDwarning light bulbs for all ttings. Forthe most critical warnings, these areideal as it is hard to avoid noticing theminstantly, even on a very sunny day.Paying a few pounds extra for one ortwo of these could save thousands ofpounds. (Refer to feature in ).FINALLYFinally, it is worth remembering that ifyou are upgrading your car, the only“right” opinion is yours, so if you want tomatch the colour of the glow in yourdash to the new interior, go for it. It isreversible. Your car, your rules.
