HOW DOES DOGRRR HANDLE INTAKE This is a common question that does not have an easy answer managing intake in a rescue the size of Dallas DogRRR is like playing chess with 200 pieces This is what we consider when determining if we intake a dog or cat Intake numbers vs outcome numbers which includes adoption transport death Emergency medical pulls Triaging requests Medical needs of the animal how many appointments we have available to us Do we have fosters and the funds to cover Do we have the manpower to handle what happens behind the scenes such as supplies adoptions networking etc Do we have a balanced selection of breeds ages sizes Length of stay for adult dogs in the rescue How many dogs are currently needing placement Dogs we have already committed to taking but not currently in our care Animals being returned The behavior of the animal how they are with dogs cats kids etc How many fosters adopters are asking for help with dogs that they have found or are networking This is just a small selection of the factors that need to be considered before we intake an animal On the dark side being the person persons who have to make these life or death decisions is so heartbreaking and soul destroying Many times when we have to say no it is a death sentence for that animal I cannot put it into words Many days I walk around with a dark cloud We do not like to say no but we have to keep all of the above and more in mind to keep this rescue afloat There is a balance and we are all doing the best we can in a state that does nothing to help us succeed WHAT DO I DO IF I FIND A LOST DOG If you find a lost dog please do not post on DogRRR social media sites E mail all found dogs at hello dallasdogrrr org Heather Higgins will respond with tips on how to reunite the dog with its potential owner 6 August 2021

FOSTER WHY I FOSTER BY DANA ABLING People always ask my husband and I about fostering to the point that our answers are locked and loaded Yes it is hard giving them up for adoption but it is worth it Of course our heart is broken for what they have been through but we are not sad all the time Yes it takes work to gain our foster dogs trust and bring them into our pack but it is worth it The weird thing is that no one ever asks WHY we foster That is the question I wish people would ask Because this right here is WHY These photos were taken a month apart The picture on the left was the night we got Armstrong from the transport bus He had been attacked by dogs sometime in the past and had a horrifying leg wound that went untreated for who knows how long under that pink bandage He was terrified in a lot of pain and so confused He clung to my husband and just wanted to be held Armstrong was too afraid to look him in the eye but brave enough to nuzzle under his chin They sat there like that for hours The picture on the right is from an adoption event a month later Armstrong is all smiles after daily bandage changes lots of pain medication and two procedures to stitch that wound back together He is the sweetest little dude around Armstrong is still happy to be hanging out with his foster dad and confident enough to be looking around for his new family He is still looking by the way THIS IS WHY WE FOSTER BECAUSE ONE MONTH CAN CHANGE EVERYTHING REMINDERS FOSTER DOGS ARE NOT ALLOWED AT PUBLIC DOG PARKS AS A SAFETY PRECAUTION PLEASE KEEP YOUR FOSTER S PURPLE DOGRRR TAG ON THEIR COLLAR AT ALL TIMES MEET GREETS NEED TO BE HANDLED THROUGH THE ADOPTIONS TEAM THIS IS IMPORTANT FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS If foster is active the Adoption Team may be screening applications for potential adopters to set up meet greets For the safety of foster puppies the Adoption Team ensures that a potential adopter s resident dogs are vaccinated The Adoption team ensures that only qualified applicants meets our animals to adopt them so they are not heart broken after meeting them If you have friends or family members interested in your foster dog puppy we are happy to help facilitate that If your foster is not active yet they can complete a generic application 8 August 2021

CH 3 10 THINGS YOUR DOG WOULD TELL YOU To all fosters and adopters this is an essential read As we bring new animals into our home we need to remember that we do not know their past or what experiences they may have had Here are 10 things your dog would tell you My life is likely to last 10 to 15 years Any separation from you will be painful remember that before you get me Give me time to understand what you want of me Place your trust in me it is crucial to my well being Do not be angry at me for long and do not lock me up as punishment You have your work your entertainment and your friends I only have you Talk to me sometimes Even if I don t understands your words I understand your voice when it is speaking to me Be aware that how ever you treat me I will never forget Remember before you hit me that I have teeth that could easily hurt you but I choose not to bite you because I love you Before you scold me for being uncooperative obstinate or lazy ask yourself if something might be bothering me Perhaps I might not be getting the right food or I have been out too long or my heart is getting too old and weak Take care of me when I get old you too will grow old Go with me on difficult journeys Never say I cannot bear to watch or Let it happen in my absence Everything is easier for me if you are there even my death 9 August 2021

HOW CAN I BE AN EFFECTIVE FOSTER BY DAWN DAY OWNER TRAINER OF A PAWSITIVE DAWG Taking that first step volunteering to foster puts you on the road to helping find their forever home Fostering a rescue dog or puppy assisting with basic training and addressing undesirable behaviors is key Your time attention dedication and devotion are all commendable and your intentions well meant but there are a few pitfalls to be aware of BEING ABLE TO EMOTIONALLY DETACH YOURSELF FROM YOUR FOSTER DOG S HISTORY Try not to emotionally absorb what the dog has been through before coming to you Many of these animals have heartbreaking stories but effective fostering can help them overcome their past Dogs live in the present They can and will be shaped by past experiences but they still have the potential become a different dog Don t hold onto the dog s history to allow for unwanted behaviors to develop In other words keep his history in mind but don t let that define your expectations of ongoing behavior Give your foster the ability to grow and develop into their potential rather than having their past define them Prepare your foster dog for his future home and not the home you are currently providing As much as you d like for him to snuggle on the couch with you realize his future home may not allow him on the furniture You ll need to separate how you allow your resident dogs to behave from how you handle your foster dog Acknowledge that some foster dogs will and do experience a form of PTSD but like us can work through it and thrive BURDENING OUR DOGS WITH OUR HUMAN EMOTIONS Dogs can interpret many of our emotions and attitudes and are able to exhibit empathy to us Dogs are NOT however able to interpret sympathy directed toward them or understand that we are being compassionate and will keep them safe Many times that compassion or leniency translates to your foster you are too soft to keep me safe Dogs need to know that you as their caretaker provider protector are the true leader Working with hundreds of rescue dogs that have been successfully adopted into forever homes I have learned if I put their NEEDS BEFORE MY EMOTIONS the rehabilitative process is much more effective That being said it s not always easy to set my desire to offer the foster dog softer emotions and try to prove to them that they are now safe Initially I work hard to suppress these emotions until the foster dog is fully settled into the new environment and routine has gained confidence that they know they are safe and can survive then I can take time to baby the baby ALLOW YOUR FOSTER DOG TO LEARN AND EMBRACE THE ART OF SELF SOOTHING Crate training can be tough but it is absolutely an essential skill for almost every dog Gives them a space to decompress and relax with no fear of feeling threatened Prevents separation anxiety and destruction in the home Makes them a LOT MORE ADOPTABLE While dogs are completely reliant on us for almost every aspect of their survival they need to experience and understand that being separated isolated is okay for short periods of time ideally no longer than a 4 6 hour period followed by 10 15 minutes of quality time with you Following this schedule will in no way make your foster feel abandoned or that you don t care If you have resident dog s that are not crated you can and still SHOULD CRATE your foster Remember that as a foster you are temporarily caring for a dog that will be going into an adoptive home that may have different routines and or schedules 11 CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE August 2021

DECOMPRESSION FOR YOUR FOSTER DOG DAY 1 3 USE THE CRATE FOR Sleep and relaxation Eating meals and enjoying treats DAILY SCHEDULE FOR DAYS 1 3 USE THE LEASH FOR Guiding your foster from his crate to the door he will exit to potty When practicing Attachment Therapy Helping your foster to learn the layout of your home in a safe manner Taking short walks around the yard MORNING Put on leash leave crate go directly outside for potty and water break 15 20 MINUTES Back to crate for his breakfast and down time 1 2 HOURS Back outside for potty and water break 15 20 MINUTES Back to crate for high value treats and natural bones 2 3 different ones to chew on for stress relief Continue this pattern throughout the day may be in crate 4 6 hours at times until bedtime Repeat for first 3 days or until foster seems comfortable with routine and structured schedule This routine schedule probably seems really boring for your foster however I have found if I allow the dog this time to get settled in without any undo pressure from me or my family the process is a lot smoother and more effective WHAT YOU DO NOT WANT TO DO ALLOW CHILDREN OR ANYONE ELSE TO hug pat on the head lean over or on the dog THESE BEHAVIORS CAN FEEL VERY THREATENING TO YOUR FOSTER DOG SET UNREASONABLE EXPECTATIONS each dog has their own history imprinted behaviors personality and rate at which he will become comfortable in a new environment DO NOT COMPARE DIFFERENT DOGS TO OTHERS ASSUME YOUR FOSTER KNOWS how to let you know that he needs to potty crate time food etc THIS TYPE OF COMMUNICATION TAKES TIME CONSISTENCY FOR BOTH OF YOU TO LEARN ALLOW YOUR FOSTER on furniture sleep in the bed make demands for attention affection and or food AN INSECURE DOG CAN QUICKLY BECOME POSSESSIVE AND SHOW GUARDING BEHAVIORS TO THESE ITEMS OR PLACES AS YOUR FOSTER GETS ACCLIMATED AND SETTLED YOU CAN EXPAND HIS PRIVILEGES REMEMBER THAT AS A FOSTER YOU ARE PREPARING HIM TO BE ADOPTED INTO A HOME WHERE THESE MAY NOT BE ALLOWED INTRODUCE FOSTER TO OTHER ANIMALS THAT LIVE IN YOUR HOME A dog that does not yet feel safe in a new environment can behave in a more defensive manner that can cause problems between the resident animals This does NOT mean the foster dog is AGGRESSIVE or cannot be around other animals It simply means he is not yet ready to add more stimulation into his new life BEGIN SCENT SWAPPING TO SLOWLY INTRODUCE THE ANIMALS THROUGH SCENT FIRST Place a small towel in each crate or space where they sleep Swap the towels and place them under the food bowl of each animal This allows each animal to become familiar with the other s scent during a very positive event like eating a meal 12 CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE August 2021

WHEN YOUR FOSTER IS FEARFUL OR SEEMS TO BE SHUT DOWN HE IS UNWILLING TO MAKE EYE CONTACT OR ALLOW YOU TO TOUCH HIM Be patient Your foster has been through a LOT before coming into your home Do not take it personally Most dogs will begin to warm up to a new person and or environment within a few days Keep his schedule and environment very consistent and predictable This will help him become comfortable more quickly HE IS NOT EATING NOT EVEN REALLY HIGH VALUE TREATS This is VERY COMMON and again will usually correct itself within a few days When dogs are very uncertain and or scared it is not uncommon for them not to eat for an average of 3 days Don t leave the food out and available this all the time Instead put the food in his crate and then remove what he has not eaten when you let him out again Give him the food at his next meal Dogs do not have eating disorders When a dog is not eating and there is NOT an UNDERLYING MEDICAL CONDITION then it is almost always stress related HE DOES NOT WANT TO HANG OUT WITH YOU JUST WANTS TO BE IN HIS CRATE This too is very common Allow him access to his crate and then leave the door open IF you are in the same room so that he can make the decision when to come out DAY 4 14 SLOWLY EXPAND YOUR FOSTER DOG S WORLD ALLOW HIM MORE FREEDOM AROUND THE HOUSE BUT ALWAYS SUPERVISE ENGAGE HIM WITH BASIC TOYS OR GAMES Hide n Seek Fetch Find It drop treats around the yard help him find them Tug Etc CONTINUE USING THE CRATE INCLUDING WHEN YOU ARE HOME Dogs can develop separation anxiety when they realize that being in the crate only means bedtime or being left alone Utilize the crate when you are home at least 2 hours each day IF HE IS SHOWING AN INTEREST BEGIN WORKING ON Coming when called inside the house Walking on a leash inside the house or in the backyard Sit make sure to use a clear hand signal Etc DAY 15 CONTINUING TO EXPAND YOUR FOSTER DOG S WORLD TAKE HIM FOR WALKS AROUND THE HOME recommend using a properly fitted harness not recommend Petco or PetSmart due to the high TAKE HIM TO DOG FRIENDLY STORES do level of anxious stimulation this brings out in dogs DO NOT TAKE HIM TO DOG PARKS Too many variables and possible triggers to cause your foster to become extremely anxious and or fearful Dog parks do not regulate vaccination status nor behaviors indicating a dog is dog friendly IF YOU BELIEVE YOUR FOSTER DOG Set up a play date with a friend who has a friendly dog or take him to a dog daycare facility NEEDS MORE DOG DOG INTERACTION make sure that the facility offers an evaluation to ensure they know who your foster dog is 13 CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE August 2021

CRATE TRAINING WHY IS CRATE TRAINING IMPORTANT PROVIDES A SAFE PLACE FOR YOUR FOSTER Quiet time Sleep Rest When there is chaos or a lot of activity in your home Keeps him from getting into things that could pose a danger when not supervised While you are getting a new foster acclimated into the home HELPS WITH POTTY TRAINING YOUR FOSTER When you are unable to give your foster your undivided attention the crate keeps your puppy in a safe place so he will not wander off to potty When you bring him out of his crate take him to potty immediately INVITATION VS INTRUSION Dogs live by a social hierarchy similar to ours therefore it s vital for dogs to understand which behaviors are acceptable or unacceptable to us Most people and dogs when not playing don t enjoy intrusive or rude behaviors Some behaviors may even be dangerous for example a large puppy jumping up on a person who is elderly or does not have good balance which could cause the person to fall and be injured When a puppy dog understands what s expected of him he can relax TEACHING OUR FOSTER THE GOOD BEHAVIORS WE WANT TAKES 3 THINGS Time Consistency Patience Once your foster understands that he must be invited for any form of attention he will be more relaxed His behavior changes from one of demanding to polite requesting KEEPS YOUR FOSTER FROM GETTING FRUSTRATED AND MORE DEMANDING IN HIS BID FOR ATTENTION WAITING FOR THE INVITATION WHEN DONE CORRECTLY KEEPS YOUR DOG IN A CALMER STATE OF MIND Makes the time and attention you give to your foster even more valuable He has earned this time with you therefore it means more to him DEFINING INVITATION VS INTRUSION WHEN YOU CALL YOUR FOSTER TO YOU THIS IS AN INVITATION WHEN HE IS DEMANDING YOUR ATTENTION THIS IS AN INTRUSION Jumping up on you Whining or barking at you Nipping mouthing you Pawing at you WHEN YOUR DOG IS EXHIBITING THESE BEHAVIORS YOU SHOULD IGNORE HIM IF SITTING STAND UP WALK AWAY FROM YOUR FOSTER OR TURN YOUR BACK TO HIM Do not LOOK TOUCH or TALK to your puppy dog Doing so will encourage the behaviors that you do not want IF HE PERSISTS GO INTO A ROOM AND CLOSE THE DOOR Wait about 10 seconds and re enter the room and pretend he is not in your space Do not LOOK TOUCH or TALK to your puppy Having the leash on also allows you to stop the intrusive or unwanted behavior without grabbing hold of his collar or picking pushing or pulling him Many puppies dogs don t respond well to having their collar grabbed and may try to bite the hand that is there CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE 14 August 2021

ATTACHMENT THERAPY BONDING WITH YOUR FOSTER When your foster is loose in the house keep him on a leash This will cut down on accidents in the house if your foster is attached to you you know where he is and what he is doing Attachment therapy also works well if you have an older dog new to your home IF YOU ARE ACTIVE AROUND THE HOUSE KEEP THE LEASH HANDLE CLOSE TO YOU TO GET YOUR FOSTER USED TO FOLLOWING YOU IF HE STARTS TO GET INTO SOMETHING OR GO POTTY YOU HAVE 6 FEET OF LEASH TRAILING BEHIND THEM SO YOU ARE ABLE TO GAIN CONTROL OF THEM QUICKLY THIS IS ALSO A GREAT WAY TO Get your foster used to a leash Learn his name Start the basics of recall Use the leash to reel him in when you call him Cut down on potty accidents in the house if he is attached to you you know where he is and what he is doing ONLY DO THE FOLLOWING WHEN YOU ARE FAIRLY SEDENTARY FOLDING LAUNDRY WATCHING TV OR AT A DESK ATTACH YOUR FOSTER S LEASH TO HIS HARNESS RECOMMENDED OR COLLAR Loop the leash through belt loop or use a carabiner clip so the leash is attached to both of you I recommend using no longer than a 6ft leash and no shorter than a 4ft leash TRY TO DO ATTACHMENT THERAPY EVERY DAY FOR 15 20 MINUTES WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED WITH THE SESSION Take your foster outside to potty Put your foster in his crate for some well deserved quiet time It is a lot of work for a foster in a new environment or with new people to take in all the unfamiliar sights scents and noises If he is content to stay by your side allow him to hang out with you HAND FEED KIBBLE Practice hand feeding dry kibble a couple of times a week Do this between meals Do NOT try to hand feed the dog when he is hungry This can help your foster understand that you are providing for and protecting him Hand feeding can also help curb food guarding USING A TENNIS RACKET A tennis racket is another great tool to stop unwanted behaviors including jumping running away or rough play with other dogs or puppies USE THE TENNIS RACKET TO GUIDE YOUR PUPPY Off furniture or people Moving one puppy or dog away from another Away from open doors to prevent him from running out The tennis racket is a neutral item that your puppy will not be afraid of but will still move away from It is NOT intended to be used as a tool of punishment hitting him throwing it at him etc merely a tool to communicate to your puppy what you want him to do NONE OF THE ABOVE EXERCISES WILL HURT YOUR FOSTER S FEELINGS HE WILL NOT LOOK AT YOU ANY DIFFERENTLY OTHER THAN WITH MORE RESPECT AS THE ONE WHO HAS TAUGHT HIM BOUNDARIES 1 RULE HAVE FUN WITH YOUR FOSTER The above is based on what I have done with foster dogs that have come to my home This is a general starting off point and I adjust the schedule to the needs of a specific dog Please follow the Standard Operating Procedures of the Rescue Group if the following is not consistent Dawn Day Owner Trainer A Pawsitive Dawg 15 August 2021

CPR FOR YOUR DOG OR CAT CPR includes chest compressions to get blood flowing and rescue breaths to deliver oxygen to the organs If you find your pet unresponsive attempt to stimulate him by shaking or calling his name If he doesn t respond check for breathing If your pet is breathing get him to the closest veterinary office If your pet isn t breathing check to make sure her windpipe is clear Pull the mouth open grasp the tongue pull the tongue toward you and get a look all the way to the back of the throat If you see something in there gently try to remove it Be careful not to push it further into the airway If this invokes a response from your pet stop Beware of bites If a response is not elicited call for help CPR is a team sport and remember your primary goal is to get your pet to the closest open veterinary hospital So ask your helper to go and get the car immediately while you start CPR Start by doing 30 CHEST COMPRESSIONS pause to deliver 2 QUICK BREATHS then immediately REPEAT both steps CHEST COMPRESSIONS FIND YOUR COMPRESSION LOCATION GET IN POSITION DOGS WITH ROUND CHESTS KNEEL OR STAND BEHIND YOUR PET Lay the dog on his side focus the chest compressions over the widest part of the chest PUT 1 HAND ON TOP OF THE OTHER WITH THE FINGERS INTERLACED such as Labrador Retrievers DOGS WITH NARROW DEEP CHESTS such as Greyhounds Lay her on her side push directly over the heart to try to squeeze it SMALL DOGS CATS generally all have a narrow chest Focus your compressions directly over the heart To minimize the chance of squeezing too hard you could do compressions with 1 hand rather than the 2 handed approach DOGS WITH SQUISHY FACES sometimes have flat chests like English Bulldogs Try laying them on their backs Put your hands directly over the breastbone push on the solid piece of bone If the dog doesn t easily stay on his back lay him on his side do compressions as you would for a round chested dog RESCUE BREATHS CLOSE THE MOUTH MAKE SURE YOUR PET S WINDPIPE IS AS STRAIGHT AS POSSIBLE Head should be flat on the table or floor and the tip of the nose should be aligned with the spine OPEN YOUR MOUTH PUT IT OVER BOTH OF THE PET S NOSTRILS MAKE A SEAL DELIVER A BREATH ALLOW THE PET TO EXHALE REPEAT FOR 1 MORE BREATH Blow hard and quickly and make sure that you see your pet s chest move Focus the force of your compression on the heel of the hand that s touching the chest PLACE YOUR SHOULDERS DIRECTLY ABOVE YOUR HANDS KEEP YOUR ELBOWS LOCKED Bend at the waist not at the elbows COMPRESS AT LEAST 1 3 NO MORE THAN 1 2 THE WIDTH OF THE CHEST For medium to large breed dogs you ll have to push hard to compress the chest by 1 3 In small dogs and cats it s easy to push too hard so be sure not to compress more than 1 2 the width of the chest AIM FOR ABOUT 100 120 COMPRESSIONS PER MINUTE or about two compressions every second Sing a song in your head to keep the right beat such as Stayin Alive If you have another person to help one person should do chest compressions and the other should deliver rescue breaths After two minutes switch positions Chest compressions are tiring TIP As soon as someone is available with transportation load your pet into the car and continue CPR as you travel to the nearest vet

DECOMPRESSION Decompression should occur every time a dog is moved to a new home even if coming from another foster this allows the dog to get accumulated It is important to remember that a dog can act differently in every home The more comfortable a dog gets the more likely behavior will occur Decompression may need to occur multiple times throughout their stay The key to decompression is that it happens at the dog s pace not ours Every dog is unique and needs a different amount of decompression time sometimes two weeks sometimes two months Do not allow interactions with resident pets during the decompression period Your foster needs to feel safe in their environment and with you before they are ready to meet your dog s Create a routine dogs trust predictable things and are constantly picking up on patterns and associations Keep meals potty breaks and quiet time as predictable as possible in the initial decompression period so that your new dog knows what to expect throughout their day Be patient Every dog is an individual and the time it takes for them to feel comfortable can vary Happy wiggly body language can be good indicators that your new dog is feeling nice and comfy PRO TIPS Create a Zen Den set up a separate space room with a crate and minimal distractions Classical music or white noise will help drown out outside noises Give them a Kong or another interactive toy filled with frozen goodies such as xylitol free peanut butter canned dog food or plain yogurt Create a predictable routine 21 MEDICAL August 2021

Iduna was not a planned pick up During the historic winter storm in February 2021 she was a last minute addition from south Texas transport She was found engorged with milk starving and alone The team searched hard to find her puppies with no success Volunteers continued searching for her puppies after her life saving transport but they were never found IDUNA RESCUE SOUTH TX REHAB 2 15 2021 REFORM 7 9 2021 There are STILL no words to express how blessed we feel to have Hwasa formally known as Iduna as a member of our family She walks everyone to the door when they depart She greets us when any of us arrive My daughter just came home from work and Hwasa was her usual welcoming giddy self She is such a cuddle bug I m STILL reaching out to her foster Michelle Morell with random questions Still not sure how she does it all We are so thankful to have her be a part of our first adoption Thank you Dallas DogRRR 25 August 2021

REMINDERS Next WA transport date is September 7 2021 All dogs are considered Eligibility Requirements Heartworm negative for dogs 6 months 2 Rounds of Vaccines JUNO REHAB JOHNSON COUNTY 5 4 2021 REFORM 7 20 2021 RESCUE WOOHOO Juno one of our boarding dogs got her forever home in the great state of Washington Transport got her to Washington where within a few days she was adopted TRANSPORT GUILT Dr Phil Uh I mean Dr Harold here So I ve heard that some of the guests on the Dr Harold Show are experiencing what we call transport guilt in the DogRRR community This is where the humans feel guilty about sending their fosters to Washington because they may feel abandoned or wonder why we gave them up But let me tell ya this isn t my first rodeo and like my father always said No dog ever peed on a moving car I don t know what that means but what this ol country boy does know is that being adopted in the beautiful state of Washington is no different than being adopted in my hometown of Texas My father also used to say that guilt is like rocking in a chair it s something to do but you don t go anywhere He was a very expressive man But goodbye is difficult either way you may not get to meet the people directly and there is the fear of the unknown What we do know is that we have many transport success stories and that our DogRRR alums are living their best life on the west coast 27 August 2021
