Shimon Rubinstein Membership Vice President shimon rubinstein gmail com For me being a member of Bet Shira the only Conservative synagogue in South Dade means being part of an amazing extended family A family that sends me Shira grams thank you Sisterhood for my birthday and anniversary which I still have on my fridge Being a member means being a part of a group that is there for each other and brings people together to celebrate their Jewishenss to share in times of joy and simcha and also in times of trouble and sorrow Recently our Bet Shira family has been further apart in distance but we are still connected and engaged with each other For many of us we are more engaged now then we might have been in the past Daily Minyan on Zoom is at record attendance and many of us are coming together for Havdalah on Zoom and Facebook to bring an end to Shabbat which is something we have never done in the past We have offered a variety of online programs and are continuing to come up with new and creative programs all the time And because we were missing out on being together in person we held our Drive In Shabbat which was nothing short of one of the most memorable events in Bet Shira s history We re a very lucky group to have Rabbi Herman as our spiritual leader Since his arrival last year he has done an amazing job at getting to know us as a congregation and also as individual members I was a part of the Rabbi search committee and his understanding and philosophy about personal relationships is something that really stuck out to me His personal motto is Every Member Counts and you probably agree that these words have been followed up with massive action He has found his home and it is here at Bet Shira with all of us I m eagerly looking forward to this upcoming year and all that it entails Things might look and be different at times but as long as we re together as members of this wonderful group it will be great without a doubt Being a member of Bet Shira is something we should all be proud of and remember that without you we are not Bet Shira Thank you for renewing your membership and your continued support of Bet Shira Shimon Rubinstein Membership V P Membership The definition of membership is the fact of being a member of a group and there could not be a group I m happier to be a member of than Bet Shira In fact I love being a member so much that I became the Vice President of Membership for which I am greatly humbled and thankful

Ren e B Rittner 12 Ren e B Rittner Director of jewish learning rrittner betshira org When the JLC had to make a sudden switch to virtual learning experiences we truly believed we would soon have students in our building again At that first virtual JLC learning session we discussed Pirkei Avot 1 14 and the lines attributed to Rabbi Hillel with respect to the current situation in the world If I am not for myself who is for me But if I am only for myself what am I And if not now when I still hold that the words from Rabbi Hillel speak to our current plight our need to take care of self and family and to work towards the good of the greater community In our actions we cannot forget ourselves nor can we forget our responsibility as citizens of the world And now is always the best time tomorrow is never promised It is the role of the JLC to assist the children of our congregation in grappling with big enduring Jewish beliefs thoughts and practices To find for themselves not only answers to questions we might ask them but to develop questions to challenge teachers and each other We want to help them to think and look at the world Jewishly It is the responsibility of the JLC not only to provide our students with the tools to think with Jewish heads but also to ensure the safety of our JLC students As you are well aware Miami Dade remains in Phase 1 This means that as of this time the JLC will open on August 30th with an virtual learning We will continually reassess this plan with the goal to transition to a hybrid model with virtual option when it is safe to do so A general policy of the congregation is to follow the county schools As such we hope to transition to hybrid in October when the county opens the public schools Recently a meme has circulated that states The question isn t How can they learn the V ahavta virtually in third grade It s How can religious school be a source of constant love for third graders when the world is upside down The JLC will work hard to accomplish both to teach our students in whatever modality is safest for them to learn at that time and also to be a space where they feel loved and secure when the world is topsy turvy To best meet the needs of our students your teachers are enrolled in a class through CAJE Miami in how to use Zoom learning environments Just as if we were in our building students will have defined classes and teachers We will break our students both by grades and by Hebrew needs Breakout rooms will be used to facilitate these divisions As appropriate we will use online learning tools such as Kahoot to augment teaching On some Wednesdays the entire group will have special programming with Ren e and will have the opportunity to do a group project or WebQuest solving Jewish questions together Our school times will remain consistent with prior years Sunday from 9am 12pm
and then Wednesday from 4 30pm 6pm Hebrew students in the third grade and above should have a siddur on hand for prayer learning and a Tanach for Torah learning there are online versions of the JPS one if you do not own a Tanach When we are able to transition to our hybrid model students choosing this option will attend in person learning on Sundays at the congregation and then continued follow up of the learning on Wednesdays Concurrently on Sundays Ren e will teach those choosing the virtual model On Wednesdays all students will meet virtually We will use small online breakout groups to provide for the learning needs of our students Hebrew will be taught both Sunday and Wednesday with Wednesday providing the day to review the concepts learned on Sunday Sunday will also include Judaics holiday programming and havdalah t fillah as a school We will establish a way for our virtual learners to watch the havdalah as well The JLC curriculum for this year will include Torah through the parsha of the week Jewish values ethics and decision making through middot Mishnah and other Jewish texts Jewish history through stories prayers understanding prayers through personal connections with the text Hebrew through prayer key words phrases and root words and Jewish holidays through projects programs and contests We hope to come up with ways to celebrate our 1st grade students at the time of Simchat Torah when they typically receive a mini Torah and our 3rd grade students in the winter when they typically receive their first siddur On August 30th at 11 30am we will meet virtually with our JLC families for student and parent orientation and meet the teacher We look forward to seeing you there The JLC would like to thank the Greater Miami Jewish Federation for providing scholarships for our students and families that need assistance to attend JLC Ren e B Rittner MSW MAJS MAJE M Ed School Session Starts Virtually August 30th at 11 30 a m Ren e B Rittner Whenever possible materials will be sent home electronically for students to use in class We need to partner with our families regarding supplies and materials if we send something home please have it either printed or electronically available for students We expect students to come to our virtual class with cameras on and mics off so that we can best teach all of our students Through the course of the lessons teachers will tell students when to unmute Chat features will be on but should be used for questions only these will be disabled if used incorrectly For 13
